      It is accessible. Go to reddit. Check out the pages r/silverbugs and r/coins theres a great community of people and a plethora of information, access to finding at and below spot deals. If you haven't visited, check us out. There's even buy/sell/trade pages available at r/pmsforsale r/coinsforsale and others.

      Hi Jigre,
      You are right. The online community is very friendly for the most part. In person, at shops and shows I think it depends on the dealer. Price wise a lot of higher grade pieces have become inaccessible to the average collector. Thanks for watching and contributing.

    I’m one of those 50 something yr old collectors, although I am new to the hobby. And I so appreciate these videos you younger collectors provide. I’ve learned so much from you all. It’s a shame they treated you like that because your input on shows or expertise on coins is so so helpful! I’m from a small rural community and two hours away from any type of rare coin show and two hours away from a L& C. So a coin show vid would have been greatly appreciated. Sounds like it was their loss but don’t let them get you down. Keep searching we enjoy the videos! And they seriously very helpful. Thank you.

      Hi Terri,
      Thanks for watching. It’s great that you are getting into the hobby! Age should not be a factor. Unfortunately, I don’t think much is being done to reach younger or new collectors in a relatable way. It’s a shame I was not able to share the show with you guys. I will keep on trying! I am very glad you are enjoying the content and getting some helpful information out of it. I look forward to hearing more. Please feel free to reach out with any questions as well.

    I use to help a Coin and Stamp Co. in the 70's, with set up and packing at coin shows. Unfortunately, the same attitude you experienced, was just as bad back then, among a good portion of the dealers at these shows. Probably the most knowledgeable coin dealer and author in the U.S., Q. David Bowers, use to warn dealers that they needed to encourage and teach the younger generation on Coin Collecting, if they expected the hobby to grow. Sadly, for the most part, it fell on deaf ears.
    The hobby is certainly smaller than back in the 70's, but the younger aged collectors are more inclined to work the internet it seems, in their collecting, rather then going to shows.

    Well, if they didn't want any cameras it should have been in your material you received and posted clearly at the event. So, this is an oversight by ILNA Illinois Numismatic Association Coin & Currency Show. If not given this information to those attending then I don't know what their problem is.... Maybe send your video to them and inquire.

    • @currencyworld
      @currencyworld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tocimah,
      Thank you for watching. It was not posted anywhere nor was it in any materials that I saw. I went to them to inquire about the camera since the dealers started complaining right away. The whole thing was very strange. If I was a dealer I would want any free plugs that I could get. I was not filming any people, only the coins and banknotes. Regardless, I will not be returning to this particular show or to any events run by the ILNA. Thanks again for your input. Please consider subscribing if you have not already.

    I was going to go to this show, but was unfortunately unable to. It's so upsetting you were treated like that. If I was a dealer, I wouldn't mind if someone had and was using a camera. I don't know why it would be a risk to safety. I know being young a lot of dealers don't treat me very well. Some dealers do, and those are the ones I buy from. I can't stand the dealers that stand over me, say absolutely nothing, and make me very uncomfortable.

    • @currencyworld
      @currencyworld  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey IC Coins,
      Great to hear from you again. I was not very persuaded by their “loss prevention” arguments either. They really could not explain to me what filming at the show had to do with stealing. They certainly treated me like a thief even after I completely stopped filming after they expressed their concerns. As you can see from the video I probably got 5 seconds of footage from inside the show. After that I completely stopped and was even going to take my camera back to the car. I had a lot of money with me and was ready to buy. I even showed my envelop full of cash to the elderly man (one of the show’s organizers) when he came out to try to fight me. The whole thing was surreal. Needless to say I will not be returning to this show ever again. Hopefully this kind of thing does not happen again. Thanks for watching.

      Currency World I'm guessing they just wanted an excuse to not let you film. If they didn't want people filming, they could have just put signs up that said so, but not tell you a bad excuse. Because of how you were related, I'm probably not going to be going to that show next year either.

    It's unfortunate that those old geezers kicked you out of their show. However grumpy old men aren't the only reason the hobby is dying. The lack of interest from young people is another factor. As a millennial, I know. Millennials dislike history. Ask any kid, and they'll tell you history is their least favorite subject in school. Young people tearing down old statues because of PC shows their disrespect of history. To appreciate numismatics, you must love history. In this modern age, digital currency and Google Wallet are the latest fads. The masses are forgetting that gold and silver was money. Yes, some millennials lack disposable income. However the ones that have money spend it on crap. The average millennial's idea of "value" are iPhones, Starbucks, weed, and overpriced sneakers. My peers are puzzled why I invest money in coin collecting. I've seen people ridicule others for being coin collectors. The mainstream view is that coin collectors are elderly or nerds. People who stack silver bullion are viewed as tinfoil hats or antisocial hermits.

      Hi MrMonkeySwag96,
      Thanks for watching. I agree with you. As I stated in the video, a lot of it is innate and has to do with changing interests. It may also be something millennials grow to appreciate in time. I totally agree with you, but I feel we shouldn't let people bring us down. I've definitely came across older people like the ones you describe, but I never let there bad attitude get to me. I love the hobby and will continue it for a very long time. I believe a big part of it has to do with selfishness and greed and also a bit of pride. some people just don't like to see others prosper especially when it comes to sharing information that is why they choose not to disclose it or they beat around the bush.

    I think the main reason for the declining of this hobby is that younger generations don't use cash at all, and it is hard to like something you don't use, the coin collecting hobby begins when you review your change to see if you have something interesting, then you can specialize in ancient, foreign, silver, gold, medals, etc

    A lot of hobbies are dying. I also am a long-time toy soldier collector, and that is a major concern for those collectors as well. Same with sportscards. Cost is only one factor. Could coin collecting also be dropping from the heavy use of plastic? What you touched on is also big - everyone looking to make a buck - greed. More capitalism than collectors.

    two days ago I saw a box full of coins in a flea market
    I saw some big coins with
    Eisenhower and Kennedy
    the salesman offered me the box for 20 € and I bought it
    there were some silver coins inside I think worth 50 €
    so I discovered the pleasure of numismatica it is a very nice hobby!

    No Bitcoin, no interest! (and yes, that was a joke)
    But truly, the basic precious metals markets have been quiet for almost a decade and that explains part of it (the lack of interest) right there. We'll know more about the hobby when the PM's start back up someday. Perhaps another year from now. Be patient.
    Everything you said is true, though... but it's worth waiting to see how it all plays out. Given the demographics there's bound to be less interest... but it ain't over by any stretch. These younger people will inherit a great deal of real estate wealth -- what will they do with it I wonder?
    As we say in the business (I was a Wall Street trader for 36 years) ... "markets make opinions". It's another way of saying that rising prices will make investors more bullish. So there you have it -- the one good thing about "old money" (like coins) is that old money is often "real money" which goes UP over time (because the dollar goes down) and that's what will keep the so-called hobby alive.
    In other words, I believe what will save the hobby is self-preservation. The younger people are not stupid... once they figure out the real value of paper money they might come into this market in a big way. At least there's a good chance of it...
    All the best,
    `Mr. B

      Hi Bruce,
      Thanks very much for your thoughtful insights. I agree very much with most of what you said. In my opinion precious metals are still over valued and over bought if you look at historic trends. I think a lot of it had to do over-speculation by amateur investors in gold and silver during the early 2000s perhaps you are right and there will be another rush if the stock market starts nose diving again. I agree with you that younger people are not interested in collecting like the older generation. I have been a collector all of my life and see collectors over 60 years old and very few younger people. I think that coin collecting will go away like stamp collecting and other collecting hobbies. You have to remember that coin collecting is only a hobby and not a way to earn a living. I tried to interest my sons in collecting and they have no interest in collecting anything.

  • @AI4QT
    @AI4QT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting observation. I think you're right in that the hobby of coin collecting could be dying simply because the collectors involved in the hobby have no desire or means to bring young people into it. Let me address a few of these "means." When I started collecting coins as a kid in the 1960s (yes, I'm an older guy) silver was still in circulation and even the older coins such as the "wheat penny," the "steel penny" the Buffalo Nickel, the Mercury Dime, and the occasional Indian Head Cent could be found in circulation. Accumulating a nice collection of these coins then could be done with very small cost. These sought after coins kept the hobby going. Another thing that kept the hobby active at this time was not only chasing these aforementioned coins, but also visiting the local hobby shop or coin store. At that time, almost any town of any size (even some department stores) either had a coin store or department store where coins and supplies were sold. These kept the interest of coin collecting popular. Nevertheless, there has to be more to the decline in coin collecting than simply not having hobby stores or coin stores. Today, it is actually easier to buy coins and supplies through venues like eBay, Amazon or other online coin stores. I think some have alluded as to why the decline of the hobby. That something is history. In collecting coins one automatically should have a desire to learn about the history when the coin was minted. Since the younger generation doesn't really like or enjoy history, the coin collecting hobby will only become less popular.

After a few days looking at coins and researching banks for crh I was ready to take the plunge. Then I read coin collecting is a dying hobby and now I saw this video. You made me step away and think about if I should put my time and hard earned money into this hobby.

    • @currencyworld
      @currencyworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ernie,
      Thanks for watching. I would say that you should definitely take the plunge if it is something you enjoy. The right kind of high end coins will always hold their value in my opinion, even if the hobby as a whole is in decline. The same can be said of baseball cards for instance. The super desirable high end cards still fetch crazy numbers at auction, despite interest in the hobby in general slowing down. However, aside from all of that you should collect what you enjoy. It is not necessarily about investing or turning a profit, if that were the case, then there are much better ways to invest your money outside of collectibles. I hope that helps. Please consider subscribing if you have not already.

    I am sorry this happened to you. A couple of points, I have been a collector since 1967 and at least from my standpoint ,coin collecting has always been a hobby for the older crowd. Let's face it, most people are in their 50's or more before they can afford to collect of invest in coins. No offense. I believe that the hobby is changing for the reason's you indicated, but I also believe it will survive because some of the younger people today will get into it when they are older. No question we are in a slump right now. You have only to check coin price trends to see that. Prices are down on lots of coins, but I believe that is cyclical and will correct in the next few years. Just my two cents worth. New Sub here ! Thanks for sharing!! 😄

      The short answer is because the demand for Rolex is crazy right now. Even though Rolex is not the most prestigious watch brand, it is definitely the most recognizable. Thus it has the most mass market appeal. Rolex prices have been skyrocketing for the past year and a half or so. I hope that answers your question.

    It's simple as this for me, if the dealer is an a$$hole, they don't get my business. For the great/excellent dealers I meet - I'm not afraid to drop more money if he/she has what I'm looking for, even if it's a little more expensive. Attitude is everything at a coin show. Bad dealers at shops and shows ruin it for everyone.
    There are so many grumpy and socially inept dealers who have no life other than coins. Whenever I encounter people like that, it also makes me appreciate the fact that collecting isn't everything and reminds me of my priorities as a collector: 1.) Family 2.) Career 3.) Coins/other hobbies 4.) Other hobbies
    Stay positive, there are good ones out there. For the bad ones, karma will take care of them.

    Hello, I came across this video and felt it necessary to comment. 1st, crappy you were treated that way and agree with others that it should have been clearly indicated no photography ahead of time. 2nd, However I also feel it's 2018 and change is inevitable. Just as you mentioned by showcasing your experience to the public you can reach more people and potentially influence others into the hobby. 3rd, I will say though that I don't think the hobby is dying. I just believe it is evolving into a modern type of market place. Large bullion dealers such as Apmex, provident metals, jm bullion etc. are selling out of product faster than they can stock the shelves. Their marketing strategy attracts to many in which you can search for your favorite coin at the comfort of your home and return it free of cost if you are unsatisfied. I prefer to get it in person, but the prices of most online dealers including ebay sellers are not comparable to most coin shops and coin shows. 4th and lastly, I do agree there is a generational gap but also feel that more collectors will come about in the future. For instance, myself for a prime example was really into the hobby as a young boy. At around age 12 I lost interest and sought out other things such as surfing (thus my channel name haha)! However, a few years back, I re-discovered that old shoebox of my coin collection as a kid and starting doing research. I was BLOWN away at how many options there are now days in the hobby! From the classics, to modern day stacking there is something for everyone. Hi Silver Surfer,
      I agree that the hobby will evolve, but I have seen large declines in prices for both coins and paper money across the board for everything aside from the ultra high end rare and high grade examples. This leads me to believe that demand has weakened. I also see that the coin shows are becoming more and more empty. This may be because people are buying through other outlets, many of which are online, but I also believe this is partly indicative of dwindling overall interest. I hope I am wrong! Great channel. You have some very nice Morgans! I subscribed.

    I went to my local Coin & Stamp Show here in Spokane, WA for the first time. I was the youngest by like 30 yrs lol smh also got negative vibes until after they drew 5 silver Dollars(4 Morgans & 1 Peace) as winnings then their main prize which was A 1881 $5 Liberty Head Gold coin that I WON! lol Q&A were there, too.

    It's more accessible than ever, but young people don't use much cash so don't care about coins, and the younger generation have way less disposable income than what was standard half a century ago

  • @NumisTube

    This is nothing to be surprised about. In "old days", numismatics has always been a hobby with some level of secrecy and discretion. And plenty of older collectors and dealers still think on this way. This especially goes for "old school" dealers who still try to "hide" valuable information from their clients. A significant number of them try to keep their clients in "dark" so that they can manipulate with them... This looks a bit funny in internet era, because all information is easily accessible. You can check the prices easily, rarity, whatever you want... Therefore, some of "old school" crew doesn't like modern technologies, internet, taking photos, videos, etc. I know this from my personal experience... However, I think that you should ignore cases like these. Btw. great channel! Regards, Zlatko

    I totally agree with you and I have been collecting coins for more than fifty years. I have gone to large coin shows and all I see are old people and that is very bad for the hobby. I see very little coin stores in Southern California and that says a lot about the decline of the hobby. I have sons and they have zero interest in coins, stamps, classic cars, and other collecting hobbies and that is not good. I believe that coin collecting will decline like stamp collecting and old stamps will probably be thrown out when the collectors pass away.

    I am so sorry you had this experience. I grew up in St. Charles and it is full of the most entitled, arrogant, mean-spirited people I’ve ever encountered. I avoid going back at all costs because the people there are terrible. I truly believe you would not have been treated this poorly if the coin show was in a location other than St. Charles (or the surrounding towns). I hope you try to record coin shows in the future in different locations with nicer people.

    In my late 40s and didn't grow up with a phone in my hand, WiFi, PayPal....etc
    So I think it's declining as far as younger collectors. But for those who are younger....man the technology at your fingertips is super. If thier exposed to it rather than Call of Duty.
    I'm on the fence about filming. Me....id say film me I don't care. I carry a Peace Dollar and a Peace Maker lol.
    But thieves are sly. It's outside or another show I think is risky if they watch a video of a collector. But to each thier own. Good luck my friend.

    It's because of most numismatic professionals are A-holes. You post a picture of a coin, ask a question and get bashed immediately. I posted a penny with some unusual doubling and tripling along with some what looked like a strike through on both sides. I even said in the post, "I understand it might have no numismatic value, I just want to hear what you all think happened to it. I understand it might not be a variety or error". Well you thought I just told them to F-off because it was brutal. One guy named Ken told me it was "Fu##ing damage" on Facebook. Lucky he lives 2500 miles away in Florida.

    I got a taste of this attitude from another Utube site. today. It is a dying hobby. Easy to buy hard to sell, counterfits. What the hobby needs is a computerized system to grade coins, paying anyone a $100 to grade a coin is insane. I've tried to sell coins I purchased some 40 years ago. the offers I have recieved were insulting. You want to collect coins. I have the answer buy monster boxes of silver eagles not as for collecting but for bulk silver. When the dollar collapses you will be able to use those eagles as real money. I no longer look to sell my collection I pass them down to the grandchildren in thirty years. I no longer collect coins actively either. Maybe in a hundred years this hobby will have a computor system grading coins at like .50 cents per grade until then. It's going to be a dying hobby.

      Hi Pixxa,
      I have never had that type of experience, but as with any hobby, there are a good amount of strange people at coin shows. I have had better experiences at those. I now tend to only go to the larger coin shows, then again that may not be an option for people that do not live near major metropolitan areas. Thank you for watching. Please consider subscribing if you have not already. My hope is that this channel can help bridge the gap in the coin and currency hobby for younger generations.

I see more young people collecting as i goto shows around the west coast and when it comes to the coin community around here the old people show more respect to younger collectors. Next time this happens i want some names! We dont need these people putting on coin shows and making this hobby look bad! These items are expensive. you wouldn't walk into an art auction filming people with loads of money, buying valuable artwork. it's more than a privacy issue, it's to safeguard dealers and buyers from thieves. they don't know who u are. next time, ask for permission. and don't stoop to their level. I buy everything online. brick and mortar is yesterday. you want to appeal to a younger audience, use online auctions, forums and websites. only my opinion.

    • @currencyworld
      @currencyworld  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt,
      Thank you for your feedback. I understand your point and agree in large part. I do not think an art auction is comparable and even assuming that it was I routinely see people filming at art auctions and even at coin auctions. The other argument is the same one they made and in my view, it is nonsensical. What is the difference between seeing a rare coin and noting which particular dealer is in possession of it, and filming the rare coin? Filming a coin would not aid in stealing it and would probably hurt one's chances of doing so. I think a lot of these people have seen too many movies. If the concern was having peoples' faces in the videos then I think that would be a valid argument. The 10 seconds of footage I was able to get inside the show was purely me filming the cases. I fully agree with you that online is the way to go. However, it is nice to go see coins and currency in person every once in a while, and I know most people that watch the channel do not have the chance to attend. Thank you for your feedback. Please consider subscribing to the channel if you have not already. I look forward to hearing more from you.
