Sabonis is an amaizing and unique player. Not only scoring and passing like Petrovic. He scores and pass with 218cm and defending, rebounding, blocking, stealing....Bill walton said: "He is like Larry Bird with 220cm"
Duels Zalgiris vs Cibona were some of the best I've ever seen with these two young superstars at their prime! They earned extremely low salaries and they had no foreigners in their teams but they both reached the finals of European cup. These two geniuses were unstoppable!
It's heart-breaking , firstly to see Sabonis' injuries change his game, from 86, where he is a true 7ft stretch-guard unicorn, to 92, where his speed and agility are gone. And secondly because you know that the '92 game is about year before Petrovic dies.
Dražen was out of this place...so ahead of his time. One of the sadest days of my life was when he past away. Even tho he always playied like he is in his prime...for him I wish that he playied in what was supose to be his prime years 28-32, 33. But just that he didn't past away. Saboni...WHAT a beast. I never understud why he didn't came to NBA at least 5 years earlyer. He would be an unstappable force.
Valdas 999 because ofiron wall my friend not injuries ,only after 1988 Seoul olympics , was alloud to go play in Europe because they won a gold even thoe Sabas had to pay komunist sport comitet i think 30-50%of his sallary.
Arguably the two best euro players ever. Thanks a lot for posting this pearl! Petro deserves all my respect. He was ages ahead of anyone in europe and his work ethic is way more than legendary. This guy at the beginning was nicknamed 'kamenko'. Literally 'stones thrower'. Because of the ugliness and scarce effectiveness of his shooting. Yes, Drazen Petrovic, can you imagine that? How much he worked to become the player he became? Another anecdote (there are hundreds) is when he played a friendly match in Trieste with Croatia. Quoting from Sergio Tavcar's book: 'He failed maybe the first 6 or 7 shots, shots he usually scored blinded, from his normally killer spots. During first timeout all his teammates were listening to the coach while he stationed long under his attacking basket looking and looking. after his 'inspection' he called the refs and asked to verify the positioning of the structure in relation to the court lines. Well....you already know what happened next. The basket was effectively slightly out of position.' This is just to give an idea about how much constructed and based on hard and countless years of work was his shooting, arguably the most lethal weapon in his arsenal. He had very small talent in relation to what he achieved (and could have been more without any doubt). His will power and work ehtic are beyond understanding and beyond that line that marks the behave of a maniac. But If I have to choose only one between the two for my team I'll pick Sabas because he simply was the God of Basketball before breaking his tendon. Very few times I saw such a embarassing dominance by a single player as he was until 1986. Wilt and MJ, Bird. Maybe Kareem too. But what made Sabas unique was the fact that he was basically running the whole offense of the teams he played for, getting out the very best of any teammate. The words of Walton come to mind: 'Sabonis was a 7'3" Larry Bird'. Very true, except for the fact that he had a lot more athleticism and hugely more physical power than the great 33 while Bird's long distance, on and off balance shooting was another game. Sabas was basketball itself, all this word means to me you can see it in his game.
It must be mentioned, that during Euroleague finals in 1986, Sabonis was ejected on 32 minute of the game. As before, Sabas absolutely dominated on Cibona's centres. That period in 85-87 (till the Achilles injuries) was peak for Sabas, when he was so fast and mobile, still already very universal and mature
During the second duel in Kaunas (1986-01-09), Sabonis had 20 points, but he played only till the end of the first quarter (19-20 min), when he fouled out. He absolutely dominated Cibona's tall men and made crazy dunks on them. By the way, there is rather good video footage of this game (about 16 minutes, only successful shots).

Petrovich was a great player but Sabonis is from another planet ,might be the Marsian

Two superplayers! Far beyond most fake NBA superstars
Two Legends!

Grand Duke of Lithuania SABONIS
The best games for Sabonis was with USSR and not with Lithuania.

Do you have 1983 Spurs vs Rockets full game? I'd love to see Gilmore against Sampson.

Los dos mejores jugadores del Real Madrid
Goaltending wasn't a thing back then?
the two best players from Europe by far
vsio krasivo i sabonis i petrovic i nevazno kto pobedil oba krasavci
Missing 1987 - EuroBasket, Group Stage (in Greece: YUG-USSR)
Sabonis didn't play that tournament.
Sabonis is the best Europian player ever.
my ass is he the best ! Drazen and closest to him Nikos Galis
We can discuss Sabonis and Drazen, but not Galis.
Zeljko Mitric sabonis and petrovic played in two very different positions, are not comparable. Both DOMINAT
I Dražen Petroooović
