  • Hỏa Lò Prison was built in 1896, and it was used by the French colonists for political prisoners, and later by North Vietnam for U.S. prisoners during the Vietnam War. Let's find out why it's the worst POW camp during the Vietnam war.
Address: 1 P. Hoả Lò, Trần Hưng Đạo, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
    Ticket: 30,000 VND ~ 1.5 USD

Thank you for covering this very important and sensitive subject matter. I have to admit, I'm pleasantly surprised that you did it. But you handled the material in a very respectful and caring way. I hope this episode reaches a lot of young people who may not be aware of their own history.

Amazing work by Ms. Van Vu. I learned so much from this video. Senator McCain was a well respected Senator from the State of Arizona. It's heartbreaking to see that humans can be so cruel to other humans. Colonization brings about lots of pain. War brings about lots of pain.

I was born in 1971, so I was a baby as this war was slowly, painstakingly coming to an end. As I recall from history, we finally packed up and pulled out in 1975. I'm 50, and there's still so much I don't know about this conflict. Thank you for posting this. I work for a city here in Texas with a heavy Vietnamese population, I've been there 21 years, and I'm to this day still trying to learn about these folks and their culture.

Hi Russell, from your description, I would venture and say that you live in Houston, TX, where it has the 2nd largest Vietnamese population (after Los Angles and the Orange County area in CA). My family moved to the US after the fall of Saigon in 1975, almost a half century ago. We are all now naturalized Americans and proud of it. My family settled in Houston decades ago. If you have questions about the Vietnam War and our culture, just send me a reply. May this message find you and your family well.

Another great video, I would like to add two more things:
In the first place, in answer to the question of how could those people last? I think the answer lies in poetry, at the moment I am writing a booklet about the people that the streets in Da Nang are named after and who often ended up in one of the prisons, but it is striking how many poems by them have been preserved. To me one of the most poignant was written by an unnamed woman who was imprisoned in Ha Noi, somewhere around 1905 she wrote in beautiful calligraphy, with her own blood on the wall of her cell, in poetic form all the atrocities that were done to her. The poem can be read in the museum of resistance in Ha Noi.
Second, a quick note about "Hanoi Hilton": in those days many Hanoi residents did not even have a roof over their heads because of the many bombings, they took shelter in the wells in the street and it was often too late for the elderly and injured. Many people lost everything and had nothing to eat for their families. Such a guard in "Hanoi Hilton" whose house and family had just been bombed.... he probably does not start his work cheerfully.

I like the food contents, but I enjoy your history and cultural contents more (like your Tet video:). It's good education for the outside world AND for those millions of Viet Kieu that were born or grew up outside of VN. Many of them either didn't have an opportunity to learn or chose to not learn the POV of the other side. And unfortunately, many of those foreign born children have a biased view because they know only what their biased parents taught them (especially the South VN Catholics). Or because they don't understand the VN language, they can't watch the VN language videos. Thus, they can only understand whatever the biased western media shows. (It's like a Chinese learning about Australian culture in China only from the Chinese school/media. It's going to be biased.) The VN-US war was only about 20 years long, while VN is 2000 year old. A drop of water in the bucket. Please, share more info about the rest of VN history and culture.

Then again the history being taught in Vietnam nowaday is very biased. It only tells their side of stories from the communist north point of views. They don't mention the north were the aggressor and tried everything to overthrow the Southern government. No genuine free elections were help. They are imposing their forms of political and economic systems to the whole Vietnam. Being independent is good but being free is another matter for the Vietnamese. Colonialism were bad but it also has the good. Such as social progress made during the French Indochina periods. A more balanced perspective on history is better for critical thinking.

    • @user-gh3zv6qz5s
      @user-gh3zv6qz5s ปีที่แล้ว

@@benchan731 I think you better read up a bit more, specifically about the Geneva Accord. It was the South (Diem as president) that refused a national election in 1956, knowing full well that HCM would have won by a landslide. He was a corrupted Catholic president. And progress can be made without colonialism. Plenty of countries out there that did well without any colonialism - Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, etc.

In 2010, I spent a month in Vietnam on vacation. One of the places I was able to visit was the Hoa Lo Prison. I remember my tour guide mentioned that according to what she learned, only one prisoner was tortured at the Hanoi Hilton. She said that was John McCain, and how he was only tortured because he wouldn’t leave. Now, I didn’t want to get into an argument but I politely pointed out how wrong her statement was.
After the tour we headed back to my hotel and I asked her to wait for a moment while I picked up something from my room. I returned with my copy of Hubbell’s “P.O.W.: A Definitive History of the American Prisoner-of-War Experience in Vietnam, 1964-1973”, which I bought for the plane ride to Vietnam. I gave it to her and explained that these are the stories of some of the prisoners, told in their own words.
She thanked me for the book and promised to read it. I don’t know if she ever read it, but I felt like I’d helped dispel some of the lies about the P.O.W.s and the war.

Vietnamese culture has many wonderful things about it. It's a mature culture: Vietnam is able to reckon with the dark blotches of it's history in a healthy way where most cultures seem to fail at this. The Vietnamese people are able to remember the past without holding grudges. No doubt Vietnam could learn much from the West but by the same token, a lot of Westerners should learn from Vietnam as well

@@I_Am_Blondie . "In 1995, McCain applauded the Clinton administration’s decision to restore diplomatic relations with Vietnam.
“It’s close to miraculous to see how far we’ve come over the last few decades,” the ambassador says.
“To go from the experiences of the war and the experiences of Sen. McCain and what we had here initially, to now be here today where we’re talking about a partnership and a friendship.”
McCain’s indelible mark on Vietnam can be seen on the walls of the prison where he once languished. Not far from pictures of him as a wounded POW, there is a photo of a smiling McCain on a tour of the museum in 2000.
The senator often stopped in to the “Hanoi Hilton” during more than 20 trips to Vietnam. On one of those visits, the former prisoner left a short message in the museum’s guest book. It reads:
      Best wishes, John McCain
      US Senator Arizona"

Oh my god. I was thinking of going to Hanoi this summer, but I have a guillotine tattoo on my leg. I got it for completely different reasons (mostly for anti classism), and I’m not even French (I’m Ukrainian). I wouldn’t want people to think I support colonialism, quite the opposite, or remind them of their oppression. Should I avoid travelling to Vietnam? I don’t think I could avoid wearing shorts in a tropical setting.

Thanks for the video. When we hear stories about the "Hanoi Hilton" its always in the context of how cruel those Vietnamese were to American soldiers or the white man as always its through the prism of race. Your brought to light it was the French or the white man who brought these harsh devilish methods of torture to Vietnam because they did not see their Asian subjects as human. I commend the Vietnamese for ultimately slaughtering the French and driving them home. And Americans solders inflicted war crimes again the people. For those that did they deserved their stay at the Hanoi Hilton. We should not shed a tear. Rot in hell for your deeds. Colonization and oppression anywhere simply does not work.

North Vietnam always gave special care to American POWs in terms of foods, exercise, etc. which the Americans later said they were treated badly. But how does life in the difficult prison camp of the North compare with the welfare regime that American pilots are cared for while in the US?
