We love it! Looks so good with the black leather dashboard too. We'd love to be able to compare this car with a G12 760Li to see what's different material wise.
PRN That's be interesting! By the way, now that you mention the G11 M760i, I've been wanting to ask you, do you think that BMW made the right move making it an M-performance model? I feel like the V12 7 series that came before were luxury foremost. How do you feel about them "sporty-ing" their biggest Limo?
I still don't know what to think about it to be honest. Everyone's been asking for an M7 or equivalent for decades now. Mercedes starting offering AMG versions of the S-Class and BMW didn't. It's weird, but an AMG S-Class makes sense, but an M 7 Series, even an M760Li as sort of a baby M doesn't feel right. We'd have to drive it to see if there's a reason for it, but then again the X5M/X6M is very popular out here and taking an SUV on a track doesn't make a lot of sense either.
PRN Good. Because I feel the same way. There's no need for an M7 or even an M-performance model. AMG S-class has never sense to me either. Equally Audi. Although they have never made an RS8, they build an S8, which is supposed to offer more sport. To me I just don't see the point in buying a limousine of these proportions and be "sporty". It's all very confusing in my opinion. Having the sportier suspension, loud exhaust etc... In a car that is merely meant to be as comfortable and luxurious as it can be, it's paradoxical to me. Glad you feel the same way. I hope there is never an M7 or RS8. It's too late for Mercedes LOL. The X5M/X6M... I have no comment to how ridiculous those are.
Haha! The Old school S8s were really awesome though, we're trying to track one down and do a Spotlight on it. The 7 Series is a great luxury car, if I want sport and a large cabin I'd get the M6 GC or E63 AMG Wagon. 7 Series will always be about cruising and comfort for me.
😂а какого хера ты отвечаешь за этих людей😂 что им нравится а что нет😂 и какого хера ты тут делаешь если тебе не нравится видео 🎞. Ты чепуха безмозглая и бесполезная😂
As someone who has extensive experience with both cars, I have a couple of things to note... The V12 uses a ZF 5HP30 transmission, which the V8 also used from 1995 until halfway through 1998. From the halfway point in 1998, the V8 uses the ZF 5HP24 transmission. The difference is basically a reduction in maximum gearbox torque. The valve bodies and shifting behaviors should be basically identical. As far as the behavior, if you were to reset the transmission's short term adaptives, which are basically adjustments made based on its observation of your driving, they should behave in exactly the same way. The only differentiator will arise due to the greater torque from the V12 engine causing more driveline torque to be available at lower RPM. This transmission controller uses torque demand as one of the primary inputs to determine when to shift. A full kickdown (past the detent at full throttle) should cause exactly the same behavior in both cars. My experience with the 750iL was that its transmission is very responsive to a forced kickdown, even if the trans had learned a very mild driving style over the last few hundred miles. The 4.4's initial throttle tip-in downshift response is a little more aggressive, in part due to the reduced torque from the engine. A good few tests to determine if it could be mechanical wear are as follows: - Shifts in steptronic mode should be very quick, taking at most a bit less than a second from +/- lever input to gear change. - Read the line pressure with a scan tool and compare with specification (don't remember off the top of my head). - Read the long term adaptives like per clutch/band pressure precompensation. Remember that the 5.4 is coupled with a 2.81:1 final drive ratio. The 4.4 is available with either a 2.93 (I think?) standard or a "Sport" ratio of 3.15 as an extra cost option, standard on 740i Sport. This can cause substantial difference in feeling at low speeds, though it is a big contributor to the "doesn't let up" feeling of the 5.4's highway power. Over about 100 MPH, there is absolutely no comparison between the cars. The 750 is MUCH faster. On the other hand, I'd be surprised if 0-30 isn't exactly the same.
There is another difference between the 5HP30 & 5HP24 which I learned when I took my 540 E34 (5HP30) and my 840 (5HP24) to ZF for a service. The 540 had over 200k KM at that time and the 840 had around 80k KM and yet the oil and control balls in the 5HP30 were perfectly fine (it never had service according to the date on the oil filter). The 5HP24 on the other hand had dirty oil and the balls had also measurable wear. As the 5HP24 has a maximum torque rating similar to the max torque of the M62B44, it needs to work "harder" which results in more wear. The 5HP30 which is I think rated with a maximum torque of 500 NM has so much reserve, that it mostly does its job with little effort. For me, it was quite a revelation to see both of them disassembled side by side and see how different the wear on them was.
As a 8-series V12 owner, the debate surrounding the V12 vs the "4-short" has been going on for years. After 11 years with the 8-series, numerous meets all over Europe this is what I have learned. 1. The V12 will outperform the V8 from 200kph and onwards, up to that speed they are virtually identical. Meaning it has no real difference, unless you live in Germany. 2. The V8 sounds better with an aftermarket exhaust than the V12. 3. V8 has better fuel economy. So if you are looking for a cool cruiser that you want to mod to attract some attention, the V8 is the one to go for. If you want the more low key route, with a tad more power and "bragging rights", go for the V12.
the v12 in this review has 30 more horse power and tiptronic gear box compared with your model(850I) unless you have an 850csi 6 speed?.750 will pull ahead of 740 and stay there all the way to 155mph(you can tell by the look on his face when he was testing it that it pulls quicker than his 740).I used to import them here in New Zealand from Japan about ten years ago when they were still viable.out of 30 odd e38's i have tried 728(6 cylinder used as taxis in Singapore) 730(v8 but this model is terribly under powered), 735, 740(4.0l) 740(4.4l) the 750 is the one to invest in.you will never be 100% happy in the v8 now you have experienced the v12 maybe 90% happy but not 100.
My car is not comparable with any of these as it has about 500hp, but that is a different story. An 840, and an 850 (5.0 300hp) "raced" on the German Autobahn. And around 200kph the 850 started to pull away. There was only made 1250 850's with the 5.4 M73 engine, so a very rare car, actually fewer that the 5.6l CSi of which 1518 was made. If I was going to buy another 8-series there is a good chance I would go for the V8, put a nice exhaust on it and enjoy it. I can't legally drive any of them to its full potential in my country, and with the performance difference being that small it makes no difference if I get the V8 or V12.
850bimmer I've got a E38 750i with a full exhaust system on it and there's no V8 BMW that sounds better! You could close your eyes and this thing sounds like a super car coming towards you! A far superior sound than the more common V8. But it's all preference! (Yes, I'm a young V12 driver) 21.
Well, I guess that is personal preference. I have had 5 different exhausts on my V12 now, and while it sound good, I still dont think it can compete with a V8 with a good system. That said a screaming Lamborghini V12 is the best sound in the world, but you can never get a BMW v12 to sound like that.
I loved the E38 and E39 styling. So beautiful and modern, yet classic, and still relevant 20+ years later. The 750iL with those wheels and lowered stance is perfection. Beautiful car.
Great video of the car that was my dream car when I was growing up, it still looks nicer to me than all the 7 series afterwards, it is just so well proportioned, it was a joy to look at them both
We really love the look of these cars too, especially in black. We were very happy to have the chance to film the V12 in the condition it was in, easily one of the best kept cars we've drive in this age range.
We'd certainly recommend checking our E38 Buyers Guide video for more information about the E38 in general. For specifics on the Euro-engines it might be a good idea to check out local enthusiast forums, bimmerforums or bimmerfest might be able to get into the differences with that engine.
That v12 interior is freaking amazing!!!! I would love to have it. I'm glad you had a moment of clarity. They are project cars that you can enjoy. Any real car person and even some that aren't will show respect for e38 owner. It also shows they have great taste in cars lol. Great vid. That v12 car looks stunning tasteful. Near perfection imo
I love my 750 interior. It has one of the rarest individual options in the world for E38. Dark green real leather with cloth green sport centers on the seats. There are only a couple few sets in the world that way!
Hi …I drive a 2000 M73 with high line leather treatment and a few M esthetics …now 97,000 mi…plastic stuff cracks.. I had exploded fan experience..every thing plastic in front of engine and near to engine fan destroyed inc radiator, hole in steel hood, hoses, air filter housings…Twice replaces gaskets on intake manifolds once when replaced aluminum pipe which was corroded. Remember …replace fan clutch as recommended…. Ultimate road car! LOVE THE TORQUE , TONS OF FEATURES AND PERHAPS BEST LOOKING BMW DESIGN. SAFE DRIVING
These certainly have their fair share of issues, as you mentioned a lot stem from the plastics BMW was using. Still great cars though. A bunch have come up for sale in Ontario recently.
Any SWB 740 with the Sport package is worth saving. It's a great setup with the Steptronic trans, shorter final drive ratio, and sport suspension. Very well matched to the V8 as well.
Couldn't agree more. I own a 99 740i sport and it is a fantastic set up. I absolutely love driving it! My dad owned a 97 740i years ago and I'd love to get the chance to drive one of those again to compare. I basically learned to drive on his car and I remember it being a very nice driving car. The M Sport feels much more athletic though! Some people ask why I didn't get a LWB and frankly I didn't want one. The SWB looks better IMO and has adequate rear seat room for how often I have passengers in the back of my car.
The transmissions are in fact different. Early 740s and all 750s received the 5HP-30 vs the 5HP-24 in 740s from I believe 97' onward. The 30 is beefier and is less prone to failure. Otherwise, great video!
Good to know, thanks for that! We forgot to ask the owner while we were there and couldn't find any specific information about the transmissions when searching for the data online.
Glad to hear it! We wanted to make sure the video was as comprehensive as possible without going over all the same sort of things we've covered in previous videos.
The E38 with the V8 and a vortec supercharger setup is awesome, by far totally worth it, the car is an absolute blast to drive with all that power on hand
I have a 2000 silver 740i Eurospec, full AC Schnitzer package, with only 40,000 miles/71,000km. I had it listed for sale today until I watched this video, then looked at some aweful Ford-looking 2002+ BMWs, and fell in love all over again with the E38. Think Bond/Transporter and find one.
Might be a good idea to hold on to that one if you can! There's certainly a lot more demand for these cars today than there was a few years ago, I think we're going to see that interest continue to grow.
Thinking of buying E38 750iL us version, I didnt catch any differences on engines on Eu and US models, same power, same stuff. What exactly is different? I am by the way Mercedes fan and have E55 AMG W210 2001 model 72000km on and rust free, the almost impossible to get (you said that on your e55 test :)
Euro/US spec engines should be the same with the 750iL, the only real difference is the short wheelbase offering of the V12 in Europe, whereas 99.999% of the cars sold in North America were iLs.
Oh, I didnt know that there was a short version of 750, I thought they all were iL.. Well if we look at it now, MB 500 and MB 500SEL makes sense. Well, the one i am after has only 180K km on clock, owner has it for 15 or 16 years, used only for long trips, never seen norwegian snowy roads, maintained the car, upgrades installed, all services, and by researching, I came to conclusion BMW V12 is more reliable then V8.
PS. BTW you have nice vids, a different approach on things, not just oh look at this how nice, all these buttons etc. but you tell your opinion and feelings, positives and negatives and most important, how your ass feels in it :) for me comfort is very important because I love long trips, that means need a big comfy car.
Haha, thanks! You might be able to find the short V12 over there, I know they made quite a few for the European market. 180k isn't bad at all, and the V12s are considered to be more reliable than their V8 brothers, although maintenance will be around the same when you factor in the added components for the V12. Get it checked by a mechanic, and if it looks good buy it! You won't regret it.
here is the add. google translate, was lazy to write down Entry car is offered for sale due to space shortage. The car was put on sale 5 years ago but I was sold two other cars and this one could be. But now I need the place. This is no show version but certainly the top-of-the-line BMW 750 with most of the equipment that can be delivered to the model. The car has gone without fail since it was new and is absolutely flawless and stainless. The car has been taken from the United States as a freight item in 2003 by owner who has had the car since December 2000. It has been upgraded to Blue Integrated Phone (BMW ULF 13th Generation), upgraded 3-D Navigation (Mark IV) with 16: 9 monitor, new Euro radio with TCM (everything from X5 that was produced for 2006), Back camera in color, iPod interface, etc. Harman Kardon music system. All BMW part numbers. BMW made a major upgrade of the 750 Series 9/98 with, among other things, New engine management system and xenon light. The upgrades were so large that there is a significant difference between models built before and after 9/98. 160,000 km service with change of plugs (12) and Lamda sensors (4) as well as all filters are done. Brake pads and washers replaced 2016. Rubber bearings for suction, water pump and radiator renewed. Towing fastening with detachable hook newly fitted. The car can be delivered free (free) within Norway. The car is mostly used for long trips and has gone very little on Norwegian winter roads. Km stand can be documented with receipts from service and EU controls. The rear shock absorbers are renewed and the car has summer and winter tires from 2015.
Agreed! We get to see a lot of photos of the BMW Individual E38s out there, I feel like there was a lot more personnalisation for this generation than there is today.
Well, I have a BMW 5.4 V12 (E38). US Specifications. It was a Demonstration Car with the BMW Dealer. I have slightly lower profile tyres at the front for cornering and taking curves at high speed on German Autobahn. The maximum speed I have driven constantly is 240 km / 150 mph...I have S Button. When it is depressed, it is a monster of a car to handle. I have never tested against a 4.4 V8 ...When the engine is warmed up, overtaking / passing at high speed is the greatest pleasure. The Factory Fitted Double Glazed windows are a boon at high speed ... The beauty of it is that it is so unassuming ... Of all the cars that I have driven, this one is the very special ...I am 82. I have this car since 2003. I drive from London to Stockholm in 23 hours and to Istanbul in 36 hours. These are becoming rarer and rarer, especially with low mileage. Mine is only 86,790 miles ...139,645 km...If you have a BMW 540 V12 (E 38), spend some money she deserves and keep it. It is a great great car to drive and to keep.
I have an old 2000 BMW 740ia outside the shop that doesn’t start. The boss said he’d lent it to me for free. And I got to say, I’m pretty impressed. 👌🏻
That's what we've heard from a few other commenters also, but the owner of this car did assure us that he drives it the way BMW intended it to be driven ;)
PRN Perhaps similar for the E38, but on my E32 750iL that makes all the difference performance wise. Sport mode on the V8 only affects the transmission. For the V12, not only does it change the shift points and feel, but also the throttle maps (as the V12 uses dual electronic throttle bodies). Also, even if you push the pedal all the way down, the throttle bodies will not fully open as that only happens above 4000 RPM, which is the shift point when not in sport mode. It also keeps it out of overdrive too. All together, it's a dramatic difference that vastly changes the car from a laid back cushy cruiser to accelerating in a way you'd never expect such a car to.
We kinda like they beige now, it's grown on us. Finding the tobacco interior like this car has is going to be tough. The owner of it already bought another tobacco interior 740i Sport, so the number of them in Canada is quickly diminishing to his garage!
I used to drive a 2001 5 series with the same interior. I loved it as the lighter color didnt get too hot in the summer months while not being so light in color that it got dirty too easily.
Guys, I will NEVER say that. Mine's a forever keeper. I'd even consider using IT instead of a coffin when that time comes. I'd just have to buy THREE plots to fit it and use the Roundel as a tombstone.
We do try to reply to everyone! TH-cam's notifications don't work though, we often won't be notified of new top level comments on videos, and almost never to replies. We try to go through the comments section of our dashboard but often if a reply is made a day after we won't know about it! TH-cam really needs to fix that.
I just purchased an 2001 e38 740il I love it. I want to change the interior out to the 750il do you think it would be costly? I also want to tune it really good. What are your suggestions?
Can’t help you much on the tune, I know Dinan made some parts for this engine and there are probably ECU and TCU tunes to help boost response time. The interior shouldn’t be overly complicated to switch out, it’s just finding the colour you want that might take some time.
Original owner of 740i 2001 series May 28th 2001. It now has 47,247 miles and I’m still in love as of December 20, 2021! Has a little sag in the backseat headliner, a nice scratch on the hood from curtain rods falling on it in the garage, has gone through two on board computers due to battery failure. At times, I thought I should sell it, especially when battery drainage wasn’t diagnosed for two years by mechanics (I researched and found why battery was continuing to drain) but I am glad I hung onto this car. It’s 20 years old now! Still styling and got lots of vroom! This Texas grandma is loving her midnight blue 2001 baby.
Just bought a prefacelift 1998 740iL. 104000 miles and in pristine condition. Everything works except for the sunroof. It pops up but does not slide open. Originally purchased for my 19 year old kid but looks like it will be my daily driver.
Very nice! The moonroof problem appear to be common as I've heard of similar issues. Since it tilts then the motor might not be the issue, but perhaps part of the gearing mechanism that slides the glass back. Hopefully you can get it fixed, but if you're not too worried about it then it doesn't matter!
Absolutely. We've done a number of videos on the E38 BMW 7 Series including a full buyer's guide video, which goes over the different engines and models for the North American market, along with info on overall maintenance and common problems.
We’d still love to get one if we could find one for sale and could justify the purchase. For now though we’re pretty happy cruising around with what we’ve got.
TH-cam notifications are pretty bad I have to say. We've had issues with comment notifications, we basically have no idea when someone replies to comments anymore, and half the top level comments don't send notifications.
you do really nice videos and comparisions. i dont know how i didnt fint this channel on time. now that i did i am glad i did so and i am hooked already. keep up the good job out there. i am proud of what you are doing.
We appreciate that, thanks! We're working hard to continue producing the Showdown episodes, and hope to continue to grow our videos to keep them entertaining and informative.
I own a 2001 740il an the driving experience is great i really do enjoy this car a lot my bmw only has 100k miles so not to bad but overall it's a great car.
I bought a 740d from 2000, cosmosblack metalic, M Sport Pack and M suspension, Tobacco brown seats and its just awesome so far:) Will be my new daily driver and hope to do some trips through Europe with it next year.
Very nice! That tobacco interior is pretty hard to come by, I think it's my favourite interior colour for the E38. Hope the diesel serves you well, it's something we'd love to have over here.
Glad you enjoyed it, this is still a powerhouse video for us, I don't think if I made the same type of video today it would be even a 1/10th as popular.
My sisters boyfriend had a 750il before, i tested it. And i gotta say it was a experience everyone should try, true you can't almost hear the engine but it is a sick experience. A bit later a friend of him totalled the car by just toying with it.. it was a beauty, it had this dark red paint and all the equippment this one had.. its a shame
That's too bad that the car got wrecked, but it sounds like it was a great E38! The red ones are pretty hard to come by, most buyers were conservative and went with black or grey unfortunately.
The V12 is almost more of a status symbol than anything else. It's a nice car, the attention to detail over the V8 is great, but the power doesn't add much to the car when both are stock.
They do not have the same transmission. They use to up to 1996 but BMW chose to go with the lighterduty 5hp24 for the 1997 and up 740. They kept the heavy duty 5hp30 in the 750s until 01. Nice cars. I have both and the 01 740i sport along with a 760li, E60 M5, E60 550i, and about 7 other BMW. My 1995 740il with the original M60 engine and the 5hp30 HD trans is by far the best BMW I have.
Unfortunately we've gone over that by 40k km! We're not sure if the transmission was ever serviced though on the car, we never got the service records when we bought it.
We've done a Buyer's Guide on the E38 7 Series, its a vehicle you need to be prepared for financially, especially if you plan on relying on it as a daily driver. Any of these classic flagship German cars aren't considered reliable, and can get expensive if you have to take it to a shop rather than doing the work yourself.
Improper maintenance is the biggest issue, and overall cost of said maintenance. We didn't go in depth with problems as we put together an E38 Buyers Guide video a few months ago which covered all the problems and what to look out for when it comes to any of the North American 7 Series models. Most feel the V12 is more reliable as it's single overhead cam and lack of vanos make them less prone to exploding, and the timing chain guide issue with the V8s don't affect the V12. As mentioned in the video though, the extra spark plugs, mass airflow sensors, and other engine components end up costing more, which means regular maintenance costs are higher, which scare most people away.
Depends on your market, clearly. Here in Canada there are fewer of these vehicles that were sold initially, and our winters mixed with the road salt used has caused a lot of them to become scrap, so it’s simple economics.
Both cars learn your driving habits and adjust shift points and throttle response accordingly, plus they have memory for up to three drivers that also adjusts seatting and mirror temperature etc. The shift And throttle response can be overridden when sport mode is selected truly amazing car's for the day
I owned both and I had to trade in my 750il reluctantly because of ghost issues I started having idle fluctuation and when bmw shops looked into it could never located how to fix it or what to do and they started talking about certain computer replacements and I was really trying to locate used items cause I really wanted to keep the car but after it started acting up and computers were involved I had to get rid of it and with my 740i it has much much less computers so finding any issues are much easier to get fixed but I got to admit my 750il was beautiful it also had the bulletproof package and I got a ton compliments and people drooling over it everywhere I went I had it setup right if you know what I mean
Hmmm... I really have to wonder if the 750 had the adaptive throttle holding it back, I wonder if you had reset the throttle body before if it would have given a better response?
Hey bro, I owned the 750iL and was looking forward to watching the video but the had to switch off when you incorrectly mentioned what the 2nd battery was for
Ok and what is it for then if not powering the electronics while the primary is for engine maintenance? And I'm sorry you had to stop watching after that, everyone on earth makes mistakes.
Yeah man, all good. I can't be a critic if I can't be honest/direct. Short version is that the 2nd battery was used to warm up the cars catalytic converter to improve efficiency.
The double Vanos system on the V8 is like a high performance version of Honda's Vtec system very quick. The Vanos is very expensive to fix though. I do agree the 740 is fun to drive.
Most components on either car are expensive to fix unfortunately, even if you do it yourself, it's still going to cost more than your average consumer car. But that's part of the experience!
My '97 (pre facelift) Orient Blue E38 740I (4.4l) is like a rebellious teenage daughter, always throwing a fit, and sulking to spite me... I wouldn't trade her for the world though. I've put 2 new alternators, 2 water pumps, various sensors, 18" E39 style 65 rims, rebuilt lots of hoses, belt changes, 2 fan clutch changes, speaker repairs, valve cover gaskets, all intake gaskets, control arms/bushings (including: Powerflex front Traction strut bushings), rebuilt power steering hoses, repaired seat cables, recovered headliner, 4 brake rotors and 8 pads all round, the list goes on... Also bought/made lots of supporting tools for the various jobs, got a laptop with INPA, made my own ADS Interface. Bottom line, if you want one of these cars, they're a proper handful, be prepared for that, also you need to be a competent mechanic, or be best buddies with one, just to keep up with them, otherwise they will bankrupt you. But once they're at a point where they are running and looking right, there's no better car in the world!
The V12s definitely do have a lot of the tech new cars are only finally adding on today. Just goes to show how advanced cars like the 7 Series have been.
Not here in the states. All US spec E38's whether V8 or V12 came with an automatic gearbox. If we wanted a manual we'd have to get one swapped in... :(
Who the heck wants to be shifting a seven series. Too many people like the car for the transporter movies. It's a classy car, not a race car. Get an M5!
I have an E38 2000 BMW 740iL with 92,000 original miles. My check engine light went on and I found the secondary air pump was bad ! So I took it out , and drilled out all the rivets . Found that water had gotten inside , after drying it out . I replaced all the roller bearings , and tested the armature which was good , using silicone I reassembled everything, and found stainless steel long screws and split washers ,with stainless steel grip nuts ! To tighten all hold downs ! And put back on the car ! I reset and cleared all codes ! I then drove the car for about two weeks and the same code came back on again ! Is it possible the wire connectors need silicone sealing to avoid dampness
Unfortunately that's not something I have the technical expertise to diagnose at this point, however I would suggest reaching out to either the E38 Empire group on Facebook, or one of the older BMW forums still around.
There's nothing wrong with a 740i! I think there will always be a stigma in the car community towards non-V12s of the E38, but I'm not going to let it bother me and neither should you!
Is there not a quality problem with the 8 cilinder concerning the Vanos system (because of the 1 chain system)? and this esspecially should be the matter with the "after facelift " model. I read this on a forum, which said that there is a very costly revision necessary at about 120.000 miles. Searching a E38 car: this makes me afraid of buying this type.
Not so much a quality problem, the Vanos system does need to be serviced around that time though. We've covered a lot of the E38 related maintenance over the course of our show, it's not as scary as the forums make it sound.
As is the case with any enthusiast following like the W140s or E38s, there will be a lot of back and forth between the BMW and Mercedes camps. I've spoken to many Mercedes techs and enthusiasts, and they all recommend avoiding the 90s and early 2000s V12s, they just aren't reliable compared with the V8s and smaller engines from Mercedes at the time. When it comes to the BMW the V12 is just two straight 6 motors stuck together, so they're relatively simple to maintain, although you're looking at service costs for what is essentially two engines. So while the V12 is less likely to grenade on you, maintenance will often be similar if not a bit more than the V8.
What I like most of my '95 e38-iL, aside from the subtle, but beastly, exterior aesthetics and opulent interior, is the sport mode. It is a wholly different driving experience. In my area, the 750iL E38 is far and few in-between. But, the few that I have found for sale appear to be fairly cheaply priced. If one were a DIY'er, as I am, oh what a bargain. --- Thanks for your showcase of the E38 variants, Perpetual Radio Networks.
E38.ORG will show you how to fix things that go wrong with these.more than 200 separate articles. Its very rewarding repairing these cars.750 has a cluster basket thing that explodes in the trans and puts it into limp mode, costs about $10,000 grand to get BMW to rebuild it.the more time you spend in the 750 the more the gap between it and the 740 grows.v8 power starts to feel thin.v12 will pull just as hard with 4 passengers and a trunk load of luggage, its like a freight train.soft leather package is made from baby cows,it feels so good.I believe the E38 was voted best car ever of the last century.v12 is hungry on gas compared to modern car making them sunday drivers or for guys that dont have wife and kids to support.Good on you PRN for keeping the dream alive.
I hope I'm answering this correctly for you, as I'm not sure where in the video we would have mentioned BMW Individual, but it was a package/option that would allow the buyer to customize their exterior paint colour outside the dozen or so offered on regular models. as well as get different leather combinations for the interior, such as blues, browns, greens even. e38registry.org has all the different colour options for paint and leather, including those that would have been sold as Individual options.
These E38's still look amazing today. I just bought a E39 540i and the only problem i think it needs a 6speed auto then it would be perfect. This is just me but the 5speed is not enough
i got a 1999 540i , the 4.4 liter is faster and more power than the old 5.0 v12. The 4.4 was rated at 286hp but that was too low it was over the 300hp easily ( a lot of dyno proof for that ). BMW underrated those engines not to drop sales on the v12
Keep up the good work PRN! I thoroughly enjoy your e38 videos and comparisons about other saloons in its class. I would love to see a Mercedes cl600 review! Keep it up! Regards, Jack Brouwer
As soon as someone is willing to let us borrow theirs! We're aiming to make 2025 the year of Classics, get back to our roots of sorts here on the Channel.
Johny Utah Actually you have that backwards. The v8 was notorious for having problems, especially burning oil. The v12 rarely had any issues. As far as the engines go the v12 was more reliable.
Had one, love it, sold it for more than I bought it for. That V8 is smooth and if well maintained it's just as reliable as any other car. Honestly you can drive that car forever and it will never go out of style.
Agreed! Awesome to hear that you sold yours for more, thats great. Now more than ever the E38s will start to appreciate in value, they're going to become quite sought after.
Yeah I read that too something about bore wear or something in the fuel,I much prefer the e38 over any other 7 and those are lovely examples.. cheers for sharing
I've have driven my 1998 E38 BMW 740i 510,000 miles, well maintained, outside of the typical E38 problems, engine don't burn oil, and never been apart outside of the cooling system issues these have had, this car is great and still plugging away. The newer 7 series just don't have the looks.
I had a 2001 740i Sport. A great car but it had to go after 8 years of ownership, when I purchased my 2001 750iL Sport. The V12 is a better car in every aspect, and rare. The only way to find how many e38 with a V12 where made is to google the amount of engines produced. Save your money and buy a V12
If you replace v12 diff with v8 diff the car with dsc turned off will spin one wheel off the mark all the way to about 70 miles an hour, really brings the car alive.also using wheels from 745 although are slightly wrong off set( rubs inner gauard slightly on full lock) will give the same look filling the guards with out trashing the ride.its a shame to see you getting jolted like that on the bumps in the road.have the standard v12 shocks rebuilt by a hydraulic shop(where they rebuild hydraulic rams).changing spring height is madness as it changes suspension geometry, you are robbing your self of an impressive driving experience.
Dude, that V12 interior is so ahead of its time. A god damn beauty that thing is!
We love it! Looks so good with the black leather dashboard too. We'd love to be able to compare this car with a G12 760Li to see what's different material wise.
PRN That's be interesting!
By the way, now that you mention the G11 M760i, I've been wanting to ask you, do you think that BMW made the right move making it an
M-performance model?
Love it or hate it.. but i love this styling period, don't like the newer ones
A lot of people will agree!
Bart Hoedemaker the best 7 series ever made. Just my opinion.
BOBBY I totally agree !!!
+Bart Hoedemaker - The E38 is one of the most beautifully designed BMW`s ever imho. In newer top-class cars I prefer the design of the S-class.
Yeah I think your right !
Over 400 S-class and/or A8 owners disliked this video. 😂 honestly you are doing super contributions for the e38 community. Much love ❤️
I appreciate that! I always hate seeing those thumbs downs, I don't think people appreciate how much work goes into a video like this.
🤣🤣🤣
A good few tests to determine if it could be mechanical wear are as follows:
- Shifts in steptronic mode should be very quick, taking at most a bit less than a second from +/- lever input to gear change.
Good to know, thanks for sharing!
Dude...you're awesome
I'm was very close to actually clapping from that masterpiece of a youtube comment.. respect man.
Wholesome comment 💪
This is the best looking BMW 7 series till date.
One of the few top designs to come out of BMW in my eyes.
Agreed!
E32. Truly the best! IMO
Well said! The 8 Series is the one car we hoped to review, and the owner of this V12 had a few of them however we ran out of time before moving.
the v12 in this review has 30 more horse power and tiptronic gear box compared with your model(850I) unless you have an 850csi 6 speed?.750 will pull ahead of 740 and stay there all the way to 155mph(you can tell by the look on his face when he was testing it that it pulls quicker than his 740).I used to import them here in New Zealand from Japan about ten years ago when they were still viable.out of 30 odd e38's i have tried 728(6 cylinder used as taxis in Singapore) 730(v8 but this model is terribly under powered), 735, 740(4.0l) 740(4.4l) the 750 is the one to invest in.you will never be 100% happy in the v8 now you have experienced the v12 maybe 90% happy but not 100.
(Yes, I'm a young V12 driver)
21.
Couldn't agree more!
Dream Garage: E36, E39, E38. Nothing else compares to the design of each of these masterpieces...flawless.
We love those too! We'd love to find an E36 328i convertible to add to our garage.
Funny you say that, my neighbor on the left owns and e36, 328i convertible, and on the right a e39 530i. I think its only proper if I buy an E38. 😂
Stig Shift The E46 M3 isn't a master piece? Came out in 2001 and is timeless.
The e46 is wonderful, but the lightweight e36 takes handling to another level. You own an E46 I assume.
e46 m3.
So funny to see you commenting n on cars! I love your channel!
The 750 is the car 2Pac got shot in
That's true! He could have benefited from the full protection model.
PRN very funny assholes
Also bond's car in 'Tomorrow Never Dies', classic parking garage scene. The model used in filming was actually a V8 however.
xd
CPFinger4o, I don't quite get what you mean.
"it's just a 740" say that to a guy that owns a 725tds haha
Hey the diesels are awesome! We'd love to have one over here in Canada.
It's not a bad car in any way, I love it but i'd kill to have another 143hp :p
alalalalalong I actually considering to buy one,i've got 728 right now. What to look for?
We'd certainly recommend checking our E38 Buyers Guide video for more information about the E38 in general. For specifics on the Euro-engines it might be a good idea to check out local enthusiast forums, bimmerforums or bimmerfest might be able to get into the differences with that engine.
Жак Морозов Ukraine.
We love the interior colour on this V12 also, looks even better in person.
I love my 750 interior. It has one of the rarest individual options in the world for E38. Dark green real leather with cloth green sport centers on the seats. There are only a couple few sets in the world that way!
Should've done a little back road quarter mile race between these 2!
Production limitations! As much as we'd like to it's hard to film something like this with only 1 person :P But hopefully one day!
PRN I am in the gta area of you would like help film these videos . would love to help
We certainly appreciate the offer! However we moved out east of Montreal a few weeks ago so we're starting to look for production work out this way.
Bmw used to be so cool
We definitely think so too.
They forgot the face of their father
@@Chrispypullen , the dark tower?
Very true!
My father owned a 2000 750. Beautiful machine.
Very nice! They are great vehicles, especially when they're in the great condition this one is in.
Man I absolutely love these e38 vids!! I have a 97 750iL and you are covering all the questions I wanted to ask. Great work!
Glad to hear it! We wanted to make sure the video was as comprehensive as possible without going over all the same sort of things we've covered in previous videos.
PRN Well done!
Very nice V12 but I still prefer your 7 and yes she is worth it 🙂
I feel like I've heard that before :P
Again, outstanding work, possible buyers will appreciate your Videos!
We appreciate that, thanks! We always want to improve our videos and make sure we're making something useful to the community.
The E38 with the V8 and a vortec supercharger setup is awesome, by far totally worth it, the car is an absolute blast to drive with all that power on hand
We'd definitely love to try driving one of those!
You won't regret it.
here is the add. google translate, was lazy to write down
Entry car is offered for sale due to space shortage.
IMO, this is the most beautiful BMW, and not just BMW, for me E38 is the most beautiful sedan ever made. Period.
It's definitely got a solid fanbase behind it!
Thanks for producing this video about two versions near and dear to my heart. The e38 is the best looking model BMW has ever produced to date.
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching! We love these cars too, and it was a real pleasure being able to drive the V12 finally.
Touring USA nah almost all 6 series are beauties to.
I love this era in modern automotive history. There were a lot of unique options.
Glad to hear it!
I have an old 2000 BMW 740ia outside the shop that doesn’t start. The boss said he’d lent it to me for free. And I got to say, I’m pretty impressed. 👌🏻
Have you gotten is started up and working?
My neighbor has a black one too and i can just admire the classic styling of the look every time i drive past his house
Very nice! There’s a black one in my town too that I pass from time to time.
On E38's, the throttle response depends how the car has been driven since it adapts to the driving.
That's what we've heard from a few other commenters also, but the owner of this car did assure us that he drives it the way BMW intended it to be driven ;)
@@PRNTestDrive ...and that's "Drive it like you stole it !" LOL
Was the 750iL in sport mode? Lazy throttle response and slow to downshift doesn't sound like it was.
Neither cars were.
What about adding all the options you want including the coffee brown interior, when you restore your car?
We kinda like they beige now, it's grown on us. Finding the tobacco interior like this car has is going to be tough. The owner of it already bought another tobacco interior 740i Sport, so the number of them in Canada is quickly diminishing to his garage!
I used to drive a 2001 5 series with the same interior. I loved it as the lighter color didnt get too hot in the summer months while not being so light in color that it got dirty too easily.
We find the same with ours! Still gets pretty warm if left in the sun though, but I imagine black would be hotter.
Was lucky to purchase a 1999 750IL recently and was never a BMW guy but all has changed. Absolutely beautiful car all around.
Very nice buy, congrats!
Both very beautiful cars. What wheels are on the v12? Very appealing and the style and fitment is hard to beat any other option
Definitely are! Wheels should be ACS Type 3s.
Miss my 750iL SO MUCH- thanks for the vid- loved it
We'd miss ours too if we had one!
Guys, I will NEVER say that. Mine's a forever keeper.
I'd even consider using IT instead of a coffin when that time comes. I'd just have to buy THREE plots to fit it and use the Roundel as a tombstone.
What are the rims on the v12?
These are ACS Type 3 rims I believe, 19". Someone might correct me though, I'm not well versed on my aftermarket rims.
PRN thanks man! I noticed that u reply to almost all comments, nice work💯
Oh and you were right on the rims
Still love the E38. Drove the 740 for many years. And because of that my sister bought a 12 cilinder soon after. Timeless classics and comfortable.
Nice! I absolutely love this generation and era of BMW. The V12 is truly special.
Do you still have yours?
Just bought a prefacelift 1998 740iL. 104000 miles and in pristine condition. Everything works except for the sunroof. It pops up but does not slide open. Originally purchased for my 19 year old kid but looks like it will be my daily driver.
Very nice! The moonroof problem appear to be common as I've heard of similar issues. Since it tilts then the motor might not be the issue, but perhaps part of the gearing mechanism that slides the glass back. Hopefully you can get it fixed, but if you're not too worried about it then it doesn't matter!
Thinking of getting a 740 IL in the UK as a daily driver, what MPG's do you get from it?
Our 740iL averages 10.9L/100km on mostly highway driving, I'd say we're around 75% highway right now.
The best looking 7 series ever made in my favorite era the 90s
Really can't go wrong with BMW's designs during this time.
Are these expensive to maintain and keep driving ?
Absolutely. We've done a number of videos on the E38 BMW 7 Series including a full buyer's guide video, which goes over the different engines and models for the North American market, along with info on overall maintenance and common problems.
Hi, thank you this vid. On your 740, what are the km's and if you what to sell?Thanks....
Our 740iL has about 281,000km as of right now, but I don’t think it’s really worth anything to be honest.
PRN - Perpetual Radio Networks thank you very much for replying to me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thank you! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
Awesome Review, I have a 1998 740iL, love that car! I too debated at one point getting a 750iL.
We’d still love to get one if we could find one for sale and could justify the purchase. For now though we’re pretty happy cruising around with what we’ve got.
Keep this up man! Your Channel is going to get bigger and bigger!
That's our hope, thanks! We'd like to get to the point where we have a steady stream of vehicles to feature.
Ah, I missed the notification. But i really enjoyed this video. Keep up the good work!
TH-cam notifications are pretty bad I have to say. We've had issues with comment notifications, we basically have no idea when someone replies to comments anymore, and half the top level comments don't send notifications.
Just such a beautiful vehicle. Very proud of the heads that turn as an E38 owner.
So are we! Can't find that same type of reaction unless you're in something old and loud, or new and loud.
you do really nice videos and comparisions. i dont know how i didnt fint this channel on time. now that i did i am glad i did so and i am hooked already. keep up the good job out there. i am proud of what you are doing.
Very nice! 100k mi isn't much, there's still tons of life left. Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
The comments were 665 before mine
I was going to comment and I am
This car is a pure beauty. Can't deny how beautiful and luxurious this was
Even by today's standards that 750iL has a lot going for it, it's incredible.

So true
I use to have 2000 BMW 750IL V12 - still remember that special engine sound! A dream car. Love it! Cheers.
We could definitely get used to the sound of it starting up every day. Makes us curious about other V12s from this era.
Im thinking of buying an e38. Thanks for the good content dude. Keep up the good work.
Thanks! Hopefully our videos help you narrow down your selection!
Another great video, I’ve had a couple of E38 ,740,735 great cars thanks
Glad you enjoyed it, this is still a powerhouse video for us, I don't think if I made the same type of video today it would be even a 1/10th as popular.
How does the 740d compare to these?
We'd love to know! Unfortunately the diesel E38s weren't ever offered over here. Hopefully someone will import one and we can make a video happen!
What is it with Americans and diesel? You guys don't like being economic on fossil fuels?
My sisters boyfriend had a 750il before, i tested it. And i gotta say it was a experience everyone should try, true you can't almost hear the engine but it is a sick experience. A bit later a friend of him totalled the car by just toying with it.. it was a beauty, it had this dark red paint and all the equippment this one had.. its a shame
That's too bad that the car got wrecked, but it sounds like it was a great E38! The red ones are pretty hard to come by, most buyers were conservative and went with black or grey unfortunately.
I test drove both as well.
Ended up going with the 740.
The 750 was not as cool as I thought it would be
and I really wanted it.
Until I drove it.
We realized the mistake after publishing, but yes the transmissions are different. We haven't had any issues with our 5hp24 luckily!
change the transmission filter, o-ring, gasket and fluid before its 150k miles and there will be no problems
Unfortunately we've gone over that by 40k km! We're not sure if the transmission was ever serviced though on the car, we never got the service records when we bought it.
I reallly want to buy a 740i bt everyone keep telling me to stay away from those 7 series plz any advices!?
We've done a Buyer's Guide on the E38 7 Series, its a vehicle you need to be prepared for financially, especially if you plan on relying on it as a daily driver. Any of these classic flagship German cars aren't considered reliable, and can get expensive if you have to take it to a shop rather than doing the work yourself.
One thing you didn't mention: reliability. Is the V12 really such a pain? I know People who stopped selling 850s because of problems with the engines.
PRN thank you for this clearification! :)
what is whit the price .... v12 im my country cost 4-5k$ and and v8 cost 2-3k ...
Depends on your market, clearly. Here in Canada there are fewer of these vehicles that were sold initially, and our winters mixed with the road salt used has caused a lot of them to become scrap, so it’s simple economics.
ive been in both cars before and the v12 feels like a much strong pull when you stomp it.
Fair enough!
@@PRNTestDrive both are exceptional platforms regardless
Both cars learn your driving habits and adjust shift points and throttle response accordingly, plus they have memory for up to three drivers that also adjusts seatting and mirror temperature etc. The shift And throttle response can be overridden when sport mode is selected truly amazing car's for the day
Very true
Great video, exactly what i was looking for. Awesome review of the cars, keep it up.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it, we really wanted to make sure this video was the best we could produce.
The electrical issues that can creep up on these cars are bad, I know a lot of them get traded or junked because of them.
Hmmm... I really have to wonder if the 750 had the adaptive throttle holding it back, I wonder if you had reset the throttle body before if it would have given a better response?
Maybe, but I wasn't going to mess with someone else's set up.
Yes Sir I do agree
Couldn't have said it better myself! Hope you get to continue driving yours for a while!
I have a 2001 740il , what are the rubber tips on the shock towers under the hood ?
Likely just additional dampening/water protection.
I love my 750 so much! It STILL has everything new cars have!
The V12s definitely do have a lot of the tech new cars are only finally adding on today. Just goes to show how advanced cars like the 7 Series have been.
As a german, I approve of this Video. There is a strange lack of *Quality* content for '95-'05 cars some how.
We agree! It's the main reason we started doing the show.
The 740 is available in manual so I'd take it rather than the 750 !
In Europe absolutely! Many people have started swapping manuals into E38s over here. The owner of the V12 we featured has several with 6 speed swaps.
Get an M5!
Scott Keselowski or they just like driving
I'm not lucky enough to have a 7:50 but I do have a 740 2001
There's nothing wrong with a 740i! I think there will always be a stigma in the car community towards non-V12s of the E38, but I'm not going to let it bother me and neither should you!
@6:02 totally agree!
Glad you think so!
Is the 750 lowered ?
It is a little, on BC coilovers.
What are those non original wheels?
I believe they were ACS type 3 rims.
PRN_TestDrive thank you!
I imagine maintaining the 750 with its v12 is also more costly, I know maintaining a merc w140 or w220 v12 can be very espensive!
+PRN interesting, didn't know that! Thanks for the info

Thanks for your showcase of the E38 variants, Perpetual Radio Networks.
Thanks! We had been hoping to film this video for quite a while, and were really glad to be able to make it happen.
E38.ORG will show you how to fix things that go wrong with these.more than 200 separate articles. Its very rewarding repairing these cars.750 has a cluster basket thing that explodes in the trans and puts it into limp mode, costs about $10,000 grand to get BMW to rebuild it.the more time you spend in the 750 the more the gap between it and the 740 grows.v8 power starts to feel thin.v12 will pull just as hard with 4 passengers and a trunk load of luggage, its like a freight train.soft leather package is made from baby cows,it feels so good.I believe the E38 was voted best car ever of the last century.v12 is hungry on gas compared to modern car making them sunday drivers or for guys that dont have wife and kids to support.Good on you PRN for keeping the dream alive.
e38.org is definitely one of the best resources out there, we use it often and recommend it to everyone!
740i individual ? what that thing means..what individual have ..and normal one dont ?
I hope I'm answering this correctly for you, as I'm not sure where in the video we would have mentioned BMW Individual, but it was a package/option that would allow the buyer to customize their exterior paint colour outside the dozen or so offered on regular models. as well as get different leather combinations for the interior, such as blues, browns, greens even. e38registry.org has all the different colour options for paint and leather, including those that would have been sold as Individual options.
thanks alot for answer...keep it up bro /hug
We always try to reply to all the comments we get!
These E38's still look amazing today. I just bought a E39 540i and the only problem i think it needs a 6speed auto then it would be perfect. This is just me but the 5speed is not enough
An extra gear would be really nice, no doubt.
i got a 1999 540i , the 4.4 liter is faster and more power than the old 5.0 v12. The 4.4 was rated at 286hp but that was too low it was over the 300hp easily ( a lot of dyno proof for that ). BMW underrated those engines not to drop sales on the v12
That's something we've heard as well.
Keep up the good work PRN! I thoroughly enjoy your e38 videos and comparisons about other saloons in its class.
I would love to see a Mercedes cl600 review! Keep it up!

Dude keep your 740il. Who cares if it's not a v12, the v8 is far more reliable. I miss my e38...😢
We plan on it! However we've got a long list of repairs that need to be done with it now, so we might not be driving it as much.
Johny Utah Actually you have that backwards. The v8 was notorious for having problems, especially burning oil. The v12 rarely had any issues. As far as the engines go the v12 was more reliable.

Well said. Sorry to hear you had to get rid of yours though!
what wheels does he have on the 740
Those are BMW Style 37s, also known as M Parallel rims.
@@PRNTestDrive are the ones on the 750 after market?
🔥… I wish they make them good quality as back in days!!! the interior and line was ahead of its time!!
I agree! Looking at the latest 7 Series, sure there’s a lot of screens and tech but I feel the soul and character is gone.
Good to know!
