    In 2005, right after my daughter totaled my 560SL, I happened to see a 2001 740iL (E38) at the roadside in our small town for sale. Luckily I remembered the owner’s phone number. By the time I was decided to look at it, the owner took it back to his home. I came to his home with my daughter. It was owned by a lawyer who was a preferred owner from BMW dealer. He took good care of the car with its odometer reading of about 72,000 miles. Without second thought, my daughter and I drove it home. So far, I have driven it for about 100,000 miles. It just had transmission fluid, trunk lock and dashboard serviced. Now everything is functioning. It runs like 13 years ago. I am so happy to view your video and agree to your comments about 2001 740iL (38). I will take good care of it. Thank you.

      Hopefully she was alright after the 560 SL, but it sounds like it from the rest of your comment. We love hearing from other E38 owners, it keeps us motivated to get working on it. We’re hoping to start getting to it this winter. Hold on to that one!

      I'm considering one of these V12 cars. I think they're fantastic. I'm generally not afraid of higher mileage cars if there is ample evidence of good maintenance. Is it difficult getting the car to pass smog check as they accrue more miles? I heard the Mercedes V12 engines from the 90s had the least issues across their engine lines. Is BMW's V12 as good or better? These V12 engines power the new Rolls-Royces so that is a good indication I suppose.

      PRN_TestDrive Yeah but the highway was where that car really shined. That V12 got 24 miles to the gallon on the highway, And it wasn’t even breathing hard at 120 miles an hour

    You should remeber that the gearbox "learns" how you drive. So if you drive like a grandpa, the car feels alot slower. But if you always drive pedal to the metal the car feels a lot faster. My dad had 750 and after a while when he drove like a maniac, the car different. A lot more agressive

    • @PRNTestDrive

      We used to use Meguiar's leather cleaner and microfibre towels to clean them up, it does a decent job of getting coffee spots and light dirt off, however we haven't found something that works best for deeper stains and dirt.

  • @differentcarreview-dcr
    @differentcarreview-dcr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    WOW, what a fantastic looking 750iL! Great video as usual! By the way, the car should have EDC suspension from the factory, but now it has conventional-maybe sport? suspension? Because I can't see the cables from the front shock absorbers. And what about the sound insulation compared to the W220. Is this BMW more quiet?

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This specific car has had the suspension system completely replaced, the shocks/struts are all new so the S-EDC system is no longer operable, however it was optioned from the factory. I'd say the E38 750iL was quieter than the 2004 S430 we reviewed a couple weeks ago, but that S-Class was almost as insulated. Either would be great for quiet driving, but the V12 wins by a hair!

      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quite a few, but we'd have to get a G12 760Li to truly compare. The 2016 750Li we featured last year has a lot more going for it, aside from all the safety tech like blind spot monitoring, active lane keep assist, and collision avoidance, the G12 also has optional active cruise control, night vision, self parking/remote start via the smart key, wireless phone charging, bluetooth audio, rear seat controls for phone, navigation, and media. The list truly goes on for the new one, and the V12 of the new generation would have even more standard features along with wood and leather throughout.

      It doesn't use that type of technology for this car, but I also believe that BMW hasn't introduced it on newer models either. You're running on all 12 cylinders all the time! But fuel economy was decent for this car, wasn't as bad as the Internet makes it seem.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's related to BMW's idea of the driving experience. Not sure why they don't do it, but I believe Mercedes does or at least did during their Chrysler merger. I know many 2000s Chryslers like the Charger/Magnum RTs had cylinder deactivation.

      in case of emergency, with big vac leaks or electrical errors or knock or misfire and bad coils, the M73 like the M120 in the W140 s600 can run on one bank. but not by choice. it will only do so in emergencies.
      my 750 has given me 25mpg on the highway so it's not bad. all depends on your driving habits.

      PRN_TestDrive Thanks for the response 👍🏻 Looking at buying a set for my low mileage 750iL in the UK and notice the ET must be quite low / what it needs to be for the car; however, I can’t get anything below ET 43 over here which wont look as good... Love the tobacco interior in this!

      If you're referring to B-Roll shots we took of the car, they're just b-roll shots. No audio is ever recorded for our show with the windows or sunroof open, unless we specifically mention like with the 300 E episode we did, or the SL 550 which had it's roof down.

    If it wasn't for the fact that both 740i and 750i are pretty rare in my country, I'd sell my 740i Sport for a 750i any day.
    Despite being old, and having 12 cylinders, I trust the M73 more than the M62TU.

      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So do we, during our ownership and over the course of the research we've done for the E38 videos we've produced we've found the same thing, the M73 engine has less problems than the M62, although maintenance costs are higher for the V12 as it's a bigger engine.

    I just love the E38 over any other BMW. As much as I also like the E39 5-Series, the E38 is still in a higher spot in my favorites list. They were like "unicorns" here, so difficult to spot one, specially the 750, both SWB and LWB versions, so whenever I saw one, it was like seeing your favorite celebrity or hero, lol.
    Part of my love for this generation was, of course, due to "Tomorrow Never Dies"...such awesome scenes with that silver example...then "The Transporter" a few years later, and again I freaked out seeing it.
    No matter how much better, faster and more advanced the new generations may be; *to me* , the E38 [closely followed by the E32] is the highlight of the 7-Series. I will get one of these one day!

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Part of the reason this car was and still is so popular was due to its use in films, like 007 and The Transporter. Still see them pop up in smaller productions today!

    • @Roddy_Zeh
      @Roddy_Zeh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup! And I'm very glad they still use them...as long as they don't end up destroyed, of course. hehehe
      And you know something interesting? A while ago, I used to prefer Mercedes' M120 engine over the M73, because it was more powerful...but nowadays...I don't think so. The main reason is the smaller displacement. I've seen M73's stroked to 6 liters like the M120 and they put out around the same power levels (beyond 400 hp), sometimes reaching as much as 430 hp (Alpina B12 6.0).
      Sure, I don't know if the M73 can be stroked to beyond 7 liters like the M120 can (7.4 in some engines built by RENNtech, even more than what AMG did!), but that's perfectly fine to me, as well as the simplicity of the simpler, SOHC 2-valve head design.
      The one thing I'd seriously think about doing would be a 6-speed manual conversion just like Frank Martin's car.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say really which engine is the least problematic, I've heard from people who swear by one over the other, and also from those who've had tonnes of problems with one or the other. The guy with this E38 has a few of them, and he does have a V12 manual swap for at least one of them!

    • @Roddy_Zeh
      @Roddy_Zeh 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Talk about a man of culture...XD
      Any chances of reviewing this manual-swapped example in the future?
      Anyway, more and more I'm reading about them and getting to know what I'll be dealing with when the time comes...definitely not an easy task, but neither impossible. BTW, that other vid of yours about the buying guide has been quite useful too, thanks a lot. =) #ThumbsUp

      I really can't imagine that a car with 18's, 45 profile tires will feel the same as a car with lowered suspension 20's and 30's. In saying that I haven't driven either so I can't really compare. But just looking at your camera bouncing around compared to your own 740il it is a big difference.

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The roads we were on weren't great, and you'll see in the Showdown on Thursday that the camera shakes just as much with our 740iL. The V12's got high quality suspension parts on there, plus they're almost brand-new whereas ours has seen quite a lot of mileage.

      Thanks for you're quick reply bro. I had the 20" alpena rims and although they look phat the ride wasn't that smooth. 19" AC's or even 18" M-Sport rims are the way to go. In fact there's a saying.... 20" all show, no go.

      Especially on a car like this, an 18” rim already has a pretty low profile tire, anything more and you’ll start to lose on ride feel. Hell even the M Pars aren’t ideal for smooth driving, one of the reasons why the 1997 Mercedes S 600 we featured came with 16” rims from the factory.

      Thanks! We really enjoyed the drive of this car, but we won't spoil anything quite yet, we'll be publishing a Showdown between this and the 740iL on Thursday where we discuss if the V12 was really the upgrade we want. I think having the full leather treatment on this car helps make it feel more luxurious, something we found the E65 was lacking as they added more plastic instead of less.

    • @Divine_Serpent_Geh
      @Divine_Serpent_Geh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      PRN That would be awesome. There are none of these kinds of videos on TH-cam. Showdown will be quite interesting.
      There are certain perks about having large German links with a 12 cylinder option.
      The smoothness, responsiveness, and prestige. As well as the availability of unique features only available with that trim. Such as the full extended leather as you stated, massage seats, Rear power seats etc...
      Now then about the E65 not having those specific features, You could always test a 760... ;)
      A video on that would be awesome as well.
      In my opinion, on the used market it is always worth to go for the V12 if they are close in price. Sure maintenance and parts will be a little more rare and pricey, but again, in my opinion it is worth it.

    Hi
    I love waching your videos.I have the same car here in France, 2000 750IL with every thing from the factory. I have 3 questions if you dont mind. Could you tell me the model of the suspentions? as it is pretty hard to find for edc equipped models. And could you tell me the size of the rims? ( looks like 19") and how it performs during tight turns?( if tires are touching the sides or something), and lastly; what is the chippest way to plug in a usb port in the trunk instead of the cd changer that never works? With a dsp equipped car its impossible to find something online.
    Thank you in advance
    Erek

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there, we'll certainly do our best to answer everything! The owner of this car replaced the original S-EDC system with BC coil-overs which allows him to manually adjust the ride height where the S-EDC connectors used to go. The ACS rims are 19" and they didn't seem to affect the performance of our drive, although we were limited to public roads so we couldn't really push the car to the limits. The ride quality with the rims and suspension felt very similar to our 740iL in the sense that no negative feel was experienced.
      As for the USB port, there's a device called GROM which many E38 and older BMW enthusiasts have opted for in order to get Aux, USB, and Bluetooth into their older cars. From my understanding the device plugs into where the CD changer would go and allows you to run interface connections to the front of the car, but requires some work. It should be completely DSP compatible, it's something we've been thinking about doing if we ever upgrade/repair the speakers on our E38.

      We put together an E38 Buyers Guide video a few months ago, it might be worth checking out to see what the common issues are with the E38 in general as well as the M62TUB44 engine's specific faults. It's strongly recommended to take the car to a trusted mechanic to have it inspected. $850 might not be a lot of money so it could be worth the gamble, however it's possible the car could be a mechanical wreck. Better safe than sorry by having someone look it over before!

      We're glad to have you on board! I believe we have about 40 videos to date featuring an E38, we're hoping 2020 will be the year we can do more content on them.

    Nice video but you never "stepped" on it. There is a button at the bottom of the gas pedal. When you floor it and use much force, that button gets pressed and bam! That is what downshifts and blows fuel into the cylinders. That baby will jump!

      I never 'step' on someone else's car, I don't want to be the one responsible for an issue with someone's vehicle, nor a speeding ticket considering these episodes are all filmed on public roads.

    A truly beautiful car 🚗 I owned a 525 sport i and that was an awesome driving experience can't imagine what that 7 50il was like to drive very jealous

      We're pretty jealous too! This car is outstandingly well taken care of and runs beautifully.

    7:26 you see two cool old cars from the 30s I believe

    • @PRNTestDrive
      @PRNTestDrive  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely do, good spot! There must have been some sort of classic car meet in that area when we filmed this, you don't often see pre-war cars on the road in Mississauga.

    Is this car bulletproof?

      If you’re asking if it’s one of the protection models, then no.

      Ok thanks i thought all 750iL models were protection models

    Jason Stathom must have fought with the director not blow the E38 but he did it once Jason went for a quick break 😎

      Worst part of the Transporter when that poor E38 was destroyed. Same goes for Tomorrow Never Dies.

    Only if BMW had the same quality they had back then and have the same quality now. And improve there reliability 🤣

      I really appreciate that, thanks! We had a blast filming this car, the owner is a fantastic collection of these older BMWs and it's always a treat being able to feature one.

      @@PRNTestDrive Great video. I like the BMV 7er E38 and E65 but I also have a question. Can the seatbelt height be adjusted on the E38 or does it adjust itself based on the position of the seat?
