Photographing Coastal Birds in Northern Ireland (Full Nikon Z6II Test)

  • It's time to head over to Northern Ireland again on a family visit and what better chance to give the new camera and lens a run out. I decided to buy the Nikon Z6ii to enable me primarily to take better video footage for my TH-cam films. After only using the camera for an hour before the trip, it was a bit of a baptism of fire. Luckily the weather was reasonably kind and I managed to get out and capture images of some of the local birdlife. The species included Eider, Curlew, Greenshank, Redshank amongst others.

Also great news on the big glass, they really do make the difference sometimes, although a lot of weight, lol… big man like you not a problem, lol… great stuff mate, and like people don’t always realise it takes lots of work to produce videos, nice one. Another cracking video, Simon! It’s great to see how your production technique has been honed over the past year or so. As a viewer I am there with you and I tend to forget that you have to do it all yourself; setting the scene, filming the B roll, including drone shots (!) as well as lugging all the gear and, if you’re lucky, getting the shots. Loads of effort but ultimately very rewarding. Well done! 👍🏻

  • @TonyHedges
    @TonyHedges 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm going to take credit for you getting the Z6ii, as I am reasonably new to it and recommended you get one in your last video comments section! The video straight out of camera (4k) looks great, and the breakthrough with Nikon was letting the photographer take video whilst looking through the EVF. I don't like using the flip out screen. It's useful for framing video, but nothing beats looking through the lens. Nice photos too. Your on your way to being a "hybrid shooter"! Keep up the good work.

    • @simoneardley

I also bought a 600 f4 for my canon, without a hood, and made one from a boiler pipe coupling, made of thin stainless steel. (eBay £10) A bit of rubber round the end, and it fits on perfectly. Thanks a lot Brian, looking forward to getting to grips with the mirrorless system. The jacket is a Jack Pyke Rannoch, they're a small sizing so go up if you order one 👍

    Great video Simon, saw Eiders in Northumberland a few weeks back but No stunning Males like you captured. Looks like you are getting on fine with the new set up. I’m looking to get a z611 but was lead to believe that the FT Z adapter did work the AF on ‘older ‘D’ lenses also does in in body stabilisation make up for the non VR lens. It’s just that a couple of other you tubers I follow have had issues with the FTZ on a newer G lens?

      Thanks for the comment Laurence regarding the VR but both my Nikkor primes are D lenses and work absolutely fine with the adaptor so I cant comment about the G lenses. Maybe worth dropping Nikon technical department an email. Sorry cant be of more help 👍🏼

    Hi Simon. Great video again. I was just wondering what model the 600 prime is. Looks a beast.

      Thanks Michael, its a Nikkor 600mm F4 AF-S Dii. Its a big heavy sod with no VR but you can get some lovely images with it.👍

    Great vlog Simon, I bet you didn't have elbow pads with you, the seaweed and rock's, not a good combination.

      Thanks Paul, do you mean the tripod head? If so its the Manfrotto 502 AH. There should be a link in the video description 👍🏼

    Love this latest video, I hadn't considered using the beanbag like that when crawling! Out of interest how much did you end up paying for the 600 considering it was missing the front half of the hood? I've been looking at purchasing one but prices seem to be all over the place thanks to covid

      Cheers Joshua, I ended up paying £2600 for it. Theyre up at around the 3k mark but a bit difficult to track down. I would have gone for a 500 as well if that had come up first. Happy hunting
