I have decided, after just recently finding your channel, and specifically taking notes on your hydrangeas, the next one I will add on my property is the fire light standard. I just purchased my first hydrangea 2 weeks ago (a phantom paniculata standard), and it's already shooted out, and I just noticed the flower buds starting today. I'm so excited to watch it grow. I absolutely love the fall colour of the firelight, so I do plan to add that one, in tree form, one year soon. Thanks for all your great videos.

I'm getting ready to divide a Hydrangea. I usually use a bread knife or like you, the small hand saw. Those roots are tough! Even though dividing makes me nervous; I love the free plants!! I also love your use of Sweet Alyssum. I simply adore that little groundcover. It always shows out! 🌺🌺🌺🤗

I brought 5 firelight tidbits in the spring from a nursery on Amazon. Green promise farms is the name. They were the two gallon size and are absolutely amazing! Highly recommend.

I'm a fairly new hydrangea admirer, so I love it when you show us your tips and actual footage of your propagation techniques for hydrangeas. You inspire me to try the same thing with my plants. I've only grown them for the past 4 years, so I'm a bit afraid I'll kill them if I'm not extremely careful. Will you please do a video showing us how to collect hydrangea seeds and how to get them to germinate? Some of my hydrangea blooms are brown, but I don't know what the seeds actually look like. ~Margie

Tracy your garden is absolutely stunning. I love hydrangeas and I have quite a few types in my garden but they don't produce the beautiful pink colors like yours in zone 9b. My husband propagated panicle hydrangeas from cutting but they don't survive. Will try your technique. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙂
Thank you so much….in zone 9b, to get the beautiful fall color will be very difficult as temps are usually too warm for the color to develop. The best hydrangeas varieties are plants that bloom later like the Little Lime hydrangea….another technique that also helps is by pruning your plant in June in order to push blooming back to September just as temps start to cool down in your zone. I tried that on my Bobo (in container in the back garden)
and was able to get more beautiful color on their blooms than the plants in the ground. Perhaps I will show this on video next year. All the best making more hydrangeas BG. 💚🙏🪴

Hi Tracy, thank you so much for showing how to divide panicle hydrangea! I just dug up my little limelight hydrangea and split it in the middle into two plants. I’m very happy with the result but I was curious to know if it will eventually fill in and grow on the split side too? I heard that with some bushes it won’t grow suckers on the split side..
Hi Sarah,
It you want them to grow suckers from the grown up - then plant the divided pieces a node lower than the original plant. The buried nodes will send up suckers.

Hi Tracy, Great job; does this mean you are going to leave the potted hydrangea stems in the container outside during the winter?
The two small standards have very little roots so I may have to be more careful with them….the other two larger bushes will be okay outside in their double walled pots. Thank you Eileen. 💚🪴💚

QF Fab is the one planted in the small island bed. It’s a new one for me and I’m so looking forward to see how “early” it will bloom this year compared to my original QF standard.

The plant on the left is Lavalamp Flare (conical panicles)…to the right of it is the Firelight (original).
The Lavalamp was supposed to be 2-3 ft (on tag) so I planted it there a few years ago. As it turn out, it grows to more than 4ft tall for me and now it is too big for that space so I’m thinking of moving it back but it looked so beautiful there last season that I’m still contemplating to transplant or not. Those two are some of the most beautiful plants for beautiful fall colours. Hope you find them in your area to plant in your garden.
I have been loving watching your garden develop during the different seasons. Just wondering if you ever use fertilizer and if so what do you use and how often. Love watching these awesome videos!

I only fertilize my roses & clematis in the spring and early summer. All my other perennials and hydrangeas - I just give them some compost in the spring (and sometimes in the fall)…also, I mulch the garden so that’s does slowly break down and feed the plants 🪴. Hope that helps.

I love the contrasting pointy shape of the hydrangeas to your other plants. What purple/white plants border the hydrangea?

I planted them in a 20” wide and deep round pots. Happy gardening! 💚💚💚
Did all 3 of your divided Little Lime survive, especially the standard stick?
They all survived but the “sticks” were devoured by some bunnies 🐰 and they started back up from the ground. Now they grow as bushes. I want them in tree forms so I’m waiting for some long stems to do that.

Yes, Tidbit blooms later in the season and the colour is true to the one on PW’s website. The only thing I would recommend is to have something else planted nearby or in front that blooms in early summer while you wait for the Tidbit to bloom later in the season. Happy gardening!

zone 9 and hydrangeas struggle during the summer heat & humidity
Oh no, I find that hydrangeas do well in our climate. However, it’s the roses, penstemons and zinnias that get bothered by pests and high humidity in May-June then September-October. If you have high humidity, I would plant mostly paniculata/panicle hydrangeas and avoid Macrophyllas. Panicle hydrangeas fair better under high humidity and heat. Also, delay pruning until June will help avoid the panicles from burning under intense July-August sun. All the best Nancy. 🙏🪴💚
My Quick Fire Fab also didn't bloom it is a new plant and i also moved it to a different location.
As soon as I planted it in the ground it started forming blooms. Hopefully moving your QFF to another location would help it bloom next season Angelique. 💚🪴🙏
Tracy - I am a beginner gardener, and I think I made a terrible mistake. I would appreciate your advice. I am trying to get into composting. I even purchased 3 bins, which were quite a hit to my budget. But I was willing to make the investment now for future gains in the form of good compost. I watched a ton of videos, and I learned that you need browns for carbon and greens for nitrogen. But no one warned us that you should not compost English Ivy, because it will continue to grow! I had pruned the ivy under my magnolia tree and threw it in the compost as a nitrogen source. After finishing all that YESTERDAY, I find out today that I should not have put in the ivy. Now I think I have to go in and pull all the ivy out of 3 bins. I am a senior with reactive arthritis. Do you know if trying to pull all the ivy out is my only alternative?

I’m so sorry to hear about your compost issue.
If you are in zone 7 or above the Ivy is very invasive and the vines will root in the compost….so I think the vines should be removed. 😳🥺

should you not cut more off the top before tramsplanting to help the plant ?
Yes, it would be better but it’s late fall. The plants are starting to go dormant so I left them on the plants. Any stems not able to survive now will be pruned in late winter next year. 💚🙏💚. Thanks Jim!

My newly planted little lime punch didn't produce any blooms either and both are planted in ground.
I think the grower may have given the plants too much fertilizer to force young plants to grow larger and faster for retail….you can also see that these tend to have very dark green foliage and a lot of hair-like roots (no long tap roots like what I have on my Little Lime)….a sign of too much nitrogen. Hopefully our plants will bloom next year. 🪴💚🪴

They are alyssum, an annual for our zone.
Can I divide a new hydrangea plant that I an getting in about one month?
Yes, you can definitely divide panicle and arborescent hydrangeas any time late winter to early summer.

@@TracysHomeGarden just put a little lime punch in pot about a month ago. It has a bud. Keeping fingers crossed. Want it to stay red, but if I put in our soil it will turn purple color. Will have to eventually get larger pot.

Soil pH will not affect the color of panicle hydrangeas…so I think you can plant it in ground. How fun it is for you to be able to see the LL Punch blooms soon. Enjoy Mary 💚🪴💚
Wat kinda fertilizer u use on them ...?
I actually only feed the hydrangeas with compost: 1-3 cups per plants depending on size. New plants get 1-2, larger plants get 2-3 cups. I also add about 3” of mulch on every spring.
In addition to that, I add 2” of leaf compost on the entire garden bed every 3 years (avoiding salvias, nepeta, sedums, etc…these don’t need compost and do better in poor soil).
Could the reason it didn’t bloom be that it just a new plant from a one gallon? Referring to the little red punch
I have hydrangeas cutting blooming the first year and so I don’t think the size is the reason. Judging from the deep green colour of its foliage when I got it, I think it was fed with excessive amount to fertilizer….this tend to make the plant put out more foliage growth and not blooms….thank you 💚🙏💚

Where do u find lava lamp hydrangeas?
I got my at Sheridan Nursery. Have you tried looking for them online? It’s sold by BloominEasy and now go by the name “Flare”.
