The Honda Quintet was sold in Germany from 1981 to 1984. It became a litte famous here as the car with the worst drag coefficient (German cw-Wert) of all tested cars: 0.55 (source Auto-Motor-Sport magazine 1982). If I remember correctly, the drag coefficient was better when the car was turned around with its back towards the wind.

@@rogerburrows2429 Oh Dear! Another numpty who spouts the crap that he heard down the pub or heard from JOURNALISTS from Top Gear etc who did not know the one end of a spanner from another. The Allegro was actually one of the most aerodynamic normal cars back then so much so that one of the BBC science programmes used an Allegro for that reason to try and find out what the perfect shape of a car would have to be to be perfectly aerodynamic - don't remember which programme it was but would be good if someone still had that one and put it on here to put that crap re the Allegro to bed. What they did was to stick polystyrene and cardboard etc on the outside of the car to reshape it and kept putting it in a wind tunnel to find out what the new drag coefficient was and then they kept recalculating and changing the shape till they got the best they could. From what I remember a perfect drag coefficient car would be impracticable as it would have to be very narrow and long like a small aircraft fuselage shape. People like you probably think that the MK2 Escort is a perfect drag coefficient shape car when it is shaped like a BRICK and yet you have the cheek to pick on the Allegro which was a far superior car to that leaf sprung agricultural by comparison car.

Hmm, I remember the name "Rover Quintet" but couldn't recall it. Thanks for covering the intriguing vehicles unique to Australia. It has been a market virtually unknown to inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere (unless you have connections with Australia or, like me, have some books about manufacturing history in that country). It's tragic that the local industry collapsed there in recent years after the domino effect occurred, but the history of Australia's car industry, not unlike Brazil, demonstrated great independence, unqiue ideas, and truly intriuging vehicles that only seem to have become familiar to the general automotive enthusiast public in the last few years.

Rover (and British cars in general) have a fascinating history down here.
The 75 was the first Rover I ever came across. Thought it was fantastic as a kid and still do as an adult (Midsomer Murders had one as the main car, which helped stick it in my mind).
We got the MG versions too, just not the V8 model sadly. But at least we got the P76, shame it failed to take off and they crushed most of the coupe and wagon prototypes.

Great video. We used to see quite a few Honda Rovers on the roads here in Oz in the 80s. The Honda Quint didn’t come here so Rover had that model all to itself here but the 400 and 800 were clearly rebadged Hondas. By that stage the Button Plan was well and truly in force in Australia so badge sharing was commonplace and we saw all sorts of weird and wonderful mash ups. Holden at various times were selling rebadged Suzukis, Toyotas, Nissans and Daewoos. Ford and Nissan swapped models along with Ford’s long standing relationship with Mazda and Toyota sold their own version of the Holden Commodore.

I'd forgotten about the Honda Quint(et), so thnaks for reminding me of that. Recently a car dealer near my place of work had a Honda Ballade (or rather: a Civic saloon, as it was imported from Greece, where the Ballade was apparently badged as Civic) for sale, and I briefly thought of buying it. Only very briefly, though, but I might not have resisted if it had been a Quint(et).

The Ballade ( ( Civic with a boot as you call it) was also sold in South Africa from 1980 to 2000.

The Civic Saloon started life as a Ballade .

@@monk3yboy69 I know all of that. Well, almost, because I had no idea when it was sold in South Africa, me not being South African. Here in Germany, the saloon version of the Civic (whatever name was used) was never very successful, so it hasn't been sold here for a long time. And I'm really not sure which name they used here, but it might have been a Civic from the start, just as it apparently was in Greece (the model I saw was from 1982).

The biggest Rover (as in BL/AustinROver not classic Rover) disaster was BAe's acceptance of BMW's takeover. Closer alignment with Honda while unexciting would've been better for both - at least for British and EU business. I've mentioned nefore, but I was in the main Longbridge production (not product!) engineers office when BMW's takleover was announced - shock rather than surprise, with one being especially upset at having spent two hard years tripping to Japan and trying to learn Japanese.

It's strange that the Honda Quint/Quintet is said to be 5-door version of the Civic, when the Civic of that same era has its own 5-door body. And the Quint/Quintet shares more of the same mechanicals with the Accord of that era than with the Civic. Thus, it wouldn't be wrong to regard the Quint/Quintet as the 5-door version of the Accord, which was available as either a 3-door h/back or a 4-door sedan at that time.

In those years the Japanese car companies were not shy of doing substantial partnerships of convenience with other strange bed fellows. I think these days, with the exception of ownership arrangements such as Nissan Renault Mitsubishi, they are more measured, and would rather do model by model deals of limited amounts, such as Toyota Supra / BMW, Mazda MX5 / Fiat 124, etc.
Interestingly the Koreans are rarely doing such deals. Maybe they are not yet up to such prominent position.

Australia is not the country we normally associate with industrial incapacity, lack of resources or something like that. It makes no sense why they don't have more car brands and models specific of their own.
When I think Australia the GT Falcon and Maloo immediately come to mind. Only one is truly australian.

    • @reynardkitsune1
      @reynardkitsune1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because potential buyership. How many people do live in Australia, about 25.8 million? That's not awful much, and being located in a part of this world facing overwhelming competition from Asia and being too far away from the important markets of Europe and North America made the domestic production of cars unfeasible in the bitter end.
A Maloo would be exactly the kind of car I'd like to own, but the major reason I wouldn't want to own one is RHD which is highly unpractical in Continental Europe.

@Daniel T We very rarely developed a stand alone model or engine purely based on cost. Holdens had a lot of Pontiac and Chev underpinnings, Ford borrowed heavily from the US and Europe. None of our ‘home grown’ cars are 100% Australian except possibly the AU falcon and even it’s six had links way back to the original six in the first Falcon… which came from the US.
Throw in high labour costs, a small population, high registration, high insurance and fuel prices - plus we have nearly every car manufacturer in the world selling here - and the conservatives withdrew financial support after Toyota and GM took money and shipped it back to their head offices. Perfect storm on why we no longer make cars or pretty much anything here. Ford kept building the Falcon and Territory for a market that didn’t exist, same with Holden and the Commodore.

I always liked the look of the Rover SD1 and don't think it got a fair shake over here stateside. By the time I was old enough to buy a used 3.5l with my own money, they'd all been crushed or rotted away in the boneyard and good examples just didn't exist anymore (here). Sterling was an absolute abortion of a marque and I can't believe Honda didn't pull out faster than a sophomore on prom night. Like a German car magazine once stated: "...the (Honda) Quintet is the answer to a question never being asked...".
At least in Germany, there was the 1st Gen Accord as sedan and hatchback and the 2nd Gen Civic as hatchback and wagon. The Quintet used the chassis of the Civic (wagon) with the engine of the Accord, but it looks like the German customers weren't the only ones being confused and rather bought Civics and Accords.
