They look like if you try to draw an owl from memory.
😂
Thank you! I kept waiting for the narrator to say “& they are a member of the owl family”!
They aren't, though
They are the owls closest relatives along with the frogmouths
😂
Terrifying call? Sounds like me blowing random notes with a recorder.
C'mon now, who has a recorder in the middle of the night, in the middle of the bush? Oh, except that one time at band camp ;-)
This isn't exactly the terrifying call. Google great potoo call and hear the first video. It really is much creepier than the one heard in this clip! 😮
It imitates a wailing sob as if played by flute note.
Their actual calls sound like a teenager yelling for MOM because the wifi is out again, and if that doesn't terrify you...
@arvurebantra7639 You are 100% right! All I could hear is "MOMM!" while a teenager, grumpy, holding back tears yelling for their Mom knowing she did it on purpose 🤣 🤣 🤣
They're kinda cute honestly. They look more goofy than spooky. Some of those night pictures are pretty terrifying though.
They are still creepy looking though as well
Looks like a Pokemon 😂
For some reason, people here in the rural areas kill them because they fear of them becoming "witches" or some evil spirit of bad omen.
Am not burd, am tree 🌲 🦉
He stressed on the word creepy. They do look cool but can totally see people freaked out by the night mode.
My tired brain read: the Great Potato.
I want one so they can eat these damn lantern flies😂💯
XD same
Same lol
@@Redpanda-yj9ui 😂🥔
@@Spikypotato. The great potato, flying terror of the night 😂🥔
"They also posess a unique and somewhat terrifying vocal repertoire."
Potoo: *Donkey Kong Country Noises*
We love the muppet creature
I've never understood why people think they're creepy. They're derby and adorable and I want three of them.
Just three? Bring me 12! Im in love!!!!
Me personally im not a fan when the eyes are too big and rounded, definitely makes me feel the same dread i feel when i see momo.
I also think they are adorable
They're a rare combination of creepy, hilarious, and adorable. Truly endearing animals
Here where I live some people say that they give bad luck, and them singing at night can be a little scary. But other than that they are just silly little guys
"THE POTOO AWAKENS" paired with that picture has me in tears
Agreed 😂
They look so friendly and terrifying, i want one
you want one? do you even want to sleep at night?
me too bro me too
They are so cute! ❤❤❤ I absolutely love the yawning little one hidden in its parent's plumage! 😍😍😍
I perfectly agree
I desperately need this guy as a new pokemon just imagine how cool it would be
I'm curious about what typing it would have? 🤔
@@hauntingmiseryghost and flying
@BIGBLUBBERYBOZO Dark could also work because the animal is nocturnal and maybe grass because of how it camouflages.
@@BIGBLUBBERYBOZOI think Grass and flying
Because they pretend to be plants
@@hauntingmiseryObviously dark and flying type by it's look
Adorably terrifying, yet terrifyingly adorable
These birds are not creepy...they are fascinating.
There's just something about this birds that made them become my favorite the second that I saw them for the first time just now, they're so adorable and cute in almost a creepy or uncanny way thanks to those pure black eyes and wide mouth, I love them, wish I could have a plushie of them ❤
Here in Colombia you can find them, but some people think they're some sort of witches 🤦🏻♀️ so they prey them 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ they're also known as Bienparado 🫶🏻
People can be so stupid, it' depressing 🤦🏻♀️
Also they are known in perú as the urutau, and are also hunted for the same reason.
Ah mysticism. One of humanities greatest flaws
@@jojobizarrelivingstone594mysticism?
Normal people: "Oh look, a cute animal."
People from 3rd world countries and the middle ages for some reason: "AHHH! A WITCH! BURN IT!"
I never thought this bird had an eerie sound.
❤ Pretty Melodious 😊
VOICE❤❤❤😊😊😊
I adore these creepy but oh so cute birds! The way they look like a tree limb during the day & the haunting sound they make. I wish I could see one in person.
A pootoo is like if muppets were real animals and I love it some of the strangest looking dinosaurs
My second favorite bird is the potoo. I love the shoebill most of all, but the potoo comes in a close second!! Just a strange looking bird with a haunting call that seems to say "Oh, poor, poor, pitiful me"! Fascinating!!!
I flinched when the baby bird opened it's mouth while hiding under the mother bird
I never thought I would see a living Muppet. But I dont regret it. They are cute in a derpy way
Its cute not creepy
I honestly read great potato😂
Amazing, they also lay their eggs on branches!
Muppet bird
This bird seems like Owl, parrot , hummingbird, sparrow
And the Whiperwill, don't critique my spelling 😬
They are related to hummingbirds
@@YourLocalEldritchHorror Whoa seriously??
@@DinosaurNick surprisingly yeah
Their closest relative is the Frogmouth
But Humming birds are still pretty closely related
Bro said womp womp
Not sure why one bird has two mouths, but hey, even Mother Nature hits the bottle now and again.
The 2nd mouth belongs to the 2nd younger bird
The little baby bird knowing exactly how this looks on camera : Heheheh, this is gonna BLOW SOMEONE'S MIND!
Only a few months old and already being a little troll. His mom is very proud.😅
I freaked out when I saw what seemed like a mouth on its stomach like Dedede possessed by dark matter
❤ Absolutely Unique
& LOVEABLE 100% 😊
They sounds like a motorcycle down shifting gears.
The one with the pure black eyes are just freakin adorable!
Creepy, no. Clever & cute, yes. 😊
Owl with chameleon and octopus camouflage mimic skills 🧐
That bird was hitting them notes
hey there guys im still looking for that 20 footer anyways look at this funny bird i found yoink
I think that call sounds like it's doing karaoke of the first few notes of "Don't Worry, Be Happy". 😂
In Australia we have the Tawny Frogmouth. It's very similar and has the same excellent camouflage.
Cute as heck!!! ❤
The creepy part it's because people used to listen to that sound at night and think it was a witch laughing.
Beautiful creatures indeed once you see them, you'd want three of them.
The camouflage honestly seems amazing! 😁
Where I live, we have the Chuck Will's Widow, another nightjar with a similar giant mouth and haunting night call. Hearing them calling all night suddenly explains why humans have made art and poetry about whippoorwills and their like for centuries. They're truly otherworldly.
Just imagine giant versions of these as an enemy in a fantasy game. Walking along at night and you hear that call and the "trees" all turn and look at you
Wish you had repeated her call again. It is the best part of her
Thought this was a Twany Frogmouth at first. They look alike but not quite.
I thought the same thing, being Australian.
Some of them were.
This bird doesnt even look real! It just likes like some bizzare art project, yet here it is in the flesh!
Hes So Cute!!!!!!!?
It’s Po-TOO not Poto.
Living cartoon bird character who's the definition of
I AM ECCENTRIC THEREFORE I MUST DO ECCENTRIC CRUD! WAAHAHA!
You cannot convince Jim Henson didn’t create this bird.
They look like something Hagrid would have had as a pet in Harry Potter.
OMG! I want one just to freak my neighbors out! 😂
0:38
"RELEASE ME AT ONCE, HUMAN!"
I called it, the Muppet Bird😂
The Kiffness needs to hear that call.
😃👍
Its so cute and spooky looking
Like bip
@@james56062 we love a bip fan
That's not a bird. That's a muppet. Now show me how the puppeteer hides the wires.
My brother looks so majestic you wrong for calling him creep.
"terrifying call"
*racing car shifting gears in the distance*
The whooping call is more commonly heard by the lesser, common potoo though the great potoo can make it
Looks like a thin Tawny Frogmouth.
they sound like a sportbike
I wish the channel would have shared more than one song of this beautiful bird. The song that was shared sounds was not terrifying but wonderful ❤
❤ It ! AGREE ❤❤❤
Standing up on the stump looking all pompous and debonair!☺️
To add more info , there are two species of potoos shown in the video, the gray one with big black eyes is the Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis) and the call of this bird is creepier because it looks like some sort of oversized annoyed frog. The one with yellow eyes is the Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus), and its the more melodic sound we hear in the video.
Definitely not creepy. Definitely awesome.
They are the cutest little birds...their call sounds like a childs first attempt to whistle. Their practice of having their babies snuggled under their feathers in the day is so loving. The bird does have large eyes..like a small
pet dog that cuddles...i love those nice birds.so peaceful and gentle. Anyons frightened by that tiny bird
Is a very foolish person..that would absolùtely go into massive shock if that small bird was in their vicinity.
I remember reading somewhere that certain cultures consider the Potoo to be either a guide of the dead or manifestation of the dead because their call at night sounds like someone crying. I think that's really fascinating.
Some of them are strangely terrifying. They just look so alien and uncanny.
They are similar to an owl and a hawk, marvelous bird of prey please protect it❤😊
They’re so cute! I would definitely get injured trying to pet one… by falling out of the tree. I’ve fallen out of every tree I’ve climbed
Amazing! I have not seen this unique bird before. Thx!
*Scary...? This bird, scary?*
From all the things you vould be afraid in the night, seeing an bird sould actually make you happier, since it's cute birb who its an night hunter...
Not gonna lie, when I saw a second beak, I didn’t realize it was another bird there and nearly shat myself. Looked like a Demon of Nurgle for a minute.
They’re really sweet and cute!
Why do I think of Stolas seeing this huge mouth with that small beak tip? 😂
During the day they're an adorable video game bird. During the night they're an Eldritch horror I would cry upon viewing
It sounds like a chicken that forgot how to chicken...i love it
These things actually look terrifying. 100% purel nightmare fuel incarnate lol.
I'm over half a century old and never heard of this bird!
Here in Brazil, his name is Urutau. Hearing them in middle of the night is really scary sometimes 😂
Awesome ❤️
Nothing terrifying its different. Their stillness and camouflage is amazing. The baby in the captive was cute and they sound like a flute in reverse note and has a slight resemblance of owls.
I LOVE this bird! Never had heard of them previously and I'm a big wildlife person. Thank you for introducing me to these amazing creatures who I think are absolutely beautiful and not creepy at all!❤
I want one. Have loved them for years, from afar.
They look cute and like owl 😫🌹
They look like creatures you'd see in an 80s fantasy movie where they're all played by hand puppets.
That's not a beak... That's a whole mouth!
That "terrifying call" sounds like a sleepy chicken lol
Absolutely ingenious and Beautiful!
This is the cutest bird i've seen in my LIFE!
Be careful the potoos get a bit quirky at night
Gosh such a cutie patootie
This majestic bird must be terrifying in the wild.
0:26 "I'm pretty darn cute"
In the day: 🗿
At night: 👁O👁
This has to be one of the most fascinating creatures on earth. ❤
When you cross an owl with a bass
I’d love to hear Ze Frank’s take on this “bee-yurd.”
Cute bird 😅
I swear two of them birds gave the Pepe la peu look with them eyes
