I don't know the full story behind the writing of the song, but I interpret it this way:
Delta Dawn was a beautiful young woman. A low-class man convinced her to run away with him to get married with big, unrealistic plans (which are often called "castles in the sky"). When she showed up, he wasn't there. She broke down mentally and ever since - into her forties - she walks around downtown every day looking for a man who will never show up.
There were several songs in the 70s with a theme of a person who experienced a great hurt and kind of got stuck in time; never able to move on. Two others with a similar theme that come to mind are "Copacabana" and "What's Your Mama's Name".

That's my interpretation, too. "Man of low degree" means "that guy you wouldn't want your daughter to date" to me. The bad guy.

I also think the rose is one that he gave her and she holds onto it as a reminder of what they had together.

    This is super.
Sorry to say but I like this better than the original.
Great sung, incredible bass, unbelievable beatboxing/vocal sounds, amazing harmonies. Each has just the right role in the song.
And then the video!!! Wow. They all look perfect🥰😍. Images from earlier Western movies that I watched a lot came back!
    Yes, another successful cover!!

If you want more insight into the meaning and story behind this song, the lyrics were by Alex Harvey and he actually has an entry in one of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books that explains it.

Liked your reaction! As far as a 13 yr. old singing, I think you are thinking of Leann Rhimes singing Blue. She did it when she was 13 and it came out when she was 14. Check out the official video. It's amazing, especially for a 13 yr. old girl!

Great song! Bette Midler did it first in 1971 but I remember Tanya Tucker & Helen Reddy's versions. The guys did a really nice job backing up Brooke Eden on this song. They never take away from a guest vocalist. And how cool did they all look dressed in the western theme. Reminded me of the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western movies I used to watch.

I'm so old that I remember the Tanya Tucker & Helen Reddy version of this - and needless to say Home Free and Brooke Eden just kill it. I love the setting, singing, harmony, beatboxing - all of it. There's also a live version of Delta Dawn with Home Free & Maggie Baugh that's really good too!

Per Song Facts... "This song is about a faded Southern belle whose reputation was tarnished when she hooked up with a man of ill-repute. Now 41-years-old, she wanders the streets of Brownsville, Tennessee, in search of her lost lover.".

In 1973, Tanya Tucker was the thirteen year old. As I recall, her voice was even more "mature" sounding and "growly" than Brooke's.

What I always read from the song, was this beautiful girl met an older, charismatic (but utterly scumbag) man who swept her off her feet and into bed... after a short fling in which she fell in love, he swiftly disappeared - leaving her utterly heartbroken, and with unanswered questions. He ghosted the girl - in a time when it wasn't a common thing. She then spent the rest of her life waiting for this mystery man to return, in vain. She fell in love with the image he initially presented to her, and then absconded before she could see the true image of the man he truly was.

This story of this song (as well as the sound) crosses over from country to gospel. Delta Dawn is a 41 year old woman who had been prosped to by a dark haired, questionable man. She was waiting to get married, flowers ready, her bag packed, to go off to his place after the marriage. But the scoundrel never returned for the marriage. Poor Delta must have snapped, because she still goes around town with the suitcase and dried up wedding bouquet. (Right HERE in the story is where the song begins, flashes back, then forward, like some confusing movies do.) The song points Delta and the listener to the Savior. He (the Lord Jesus) is called in the New Testament the believer’s Heavenly Bridegroom, who will return (unlike Delta’s suitor) for His marriage with the waiting Church (all believers, Marriage Supper of the Lamb) to take us to His Mansion in the sky (Heaven). Death is not referenced in this song. Does that make more sense?

I looked up the backstory to this song. This is a copy / paste of what I got...
"...the writer of this track (Alex Harvey) wrote “Delta Dawn” about his own mother.
His mother was the free-spirited lady who unfortunately had issues with alcohol consumption. She died via what appears to be suicide when Alex was a teen, and he personally harbored guilt concerning her death for years.
Then one day, according to the writer himself, her spirit appeared to him. And the way it manifested was in such a manner where he was finally able to start the process of putting said guilt behind him. It was also at that very moment that he began to write “Delta Dawn”. Shortly thereafter he enlisted Larry Collins, whose home he was in at the time, to help him complete the tune, which they did in about 20 minutes. So in a way you can say the composition of this song was kind of miraculous..."
