  • Today we look at a small bit of tech that actually saved my ENTIRE COLLECTION of TROPICAL PLANTS from severe sickness (yellow leaves, black marks on leaves, dropping leaves) and possibly death!     I have been coming to the conclusion that I may have mites, and thought I would see them too. I brought one outside to keep away from my collection, and there was a ladybug on it for several days. Now I need to investigate further. Thanks for the nudge.

    Years ago, I owned a Commercial Greenhouse. Whenever I had to fight an infestation of Spider Mites I would use insecticidal 'smoke bombs'. Can't remember the name... but, we'd close _ALL the vents, light them & let it fumigate overnight. Worked !

      Yeah I used to use them too around 25 years in my first little greenhouse. Alas, I've never been able to get hold of them since - probably another one banned for H & S.

    Thanks for the tip. I keep meaning to order one and now I have. Pesky spider mites literally trashed all the leaves on my Catasetums last year.

      Oh no! I think they're possibly the worst of the many pests as it's so hard to spot them, and they're resistant to chemical controls. They work to some extent but it only take s a few of the blighters to launch a comeback.

      Lol! Highly honoured Jane - don't know how you found this but I'm happy to see you here. Love the podcast by the way. 😀 (And yeah the hand lens has been a game changer - I can see how infested everything was. The issue was that the plants were ejecting the leaves before getting to the point of visible webbing. Now the thing is barely out of my hands.)

      I’d be happy to help - not that I’m the finished article by any means. It’s a ‘process’! My aim is to always be improving in all aspects from presentation to shooting to editing to plant knowledge and so on. You know where I am if you want the opinion of a middle aged grafter. 🤣

    Thanks, Geoff! Ordered the botantist’s lens right away! 12.49USD looks like same set as yours. Although I’m apprehensive about what I will find....but it is better to be informed. None of this out of sight, out of mind as my plants slowly die mysterious deaths.

      I'm beginning to feel very nervous about this hand lens - I hope it works well for people - it was just the first one I came across! 😂 It's worked fine for me so far and I can't believe how much growth everything has put on again in just a few days. It was definitely worth it from my perspective. I hope it works well for you too.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 No worries! You had great success with this tool. I’m also going to use it as an inspection device when I unpack plants after online ordering. It has other uses too, like helping to see when removing those pesky splinters I get from woodworking projects.....

    Really good video Geoff,short,to the point & obviously something im sure we've all lost plants too unknowingly.Ordered the sliding lens,already have the loupe folding one i use on my fountain pen nibs.Hoped you picked all that money up😲👍

    Yes magnifying glass changed my viewpoint literally. Funny how much pest content there is about treatment but not about discovering them in the first place. And also checking back later to see if bugs are back. I used your link.

      Yeah I agree. Diagnosing pest problems seems to be about guesswork and probabilities rather than positive diagnosis. The problem is, some mites are just too small to see - even with a hand-lens.

    About a month ago I got a Carson Microbrite Plus (cheap $16 on Amazon) and a Triplet loop and found the same problem. I also thought oh I know how to notice spider mites....wrong... I found the tiniest mites on only the underside of the leaves! Great tool to have

      Yeah definitely. And don't forget about those mites too small even to see with a hand lens - like Tarsonemid mites. They're out to get us...

    Yes, I'll order this kit too. As you get older your eyes aren't as good and need help seeing theses tiny little buggers! At 64 years old I need all the help I can get Geoff! Well done! Look forward to seeing that growth explosion!

      You’ll be going crazy like I was Tommy, inspecting every leaf of every plant! 😂 I then used an entire bottle of bug killer in one go. So much for being organic. I’m not losing the whole darned lot of them! 😂🤷‍♂️

      It doesn't help that they're so resistant to chemicals. You can spray them - but they always sneak up on you again. I was 'attempting' to be more organic this year - but when it comes down to it, I'm not prepared to lose my entire collection to the little buggers.🤷‍♂️

      @@Grow_Up_Man55Generally, I only use systemic pesticides once in the spring and once in the fall (two doses as in the instructions). Other then that I keep a topical on hand and spray as needed. Something mild enough where I can spray a new growth, a bud or everyday without harming it. I still get out breaks of red spider mites but I can usually get them under control before they do too much damage. I ordered the jewelers loope. Thanks for the recommendation. I had been looking for something similar for a while.

    I build model kits before getting into gardening, so I’ll wear the magnifying goggles with LED lights and I’ll just stare closely at the plants. I was able to spot some mealybugs on tiny new growth. It’s like watching a horror movie and getting jump scares when I see them lurking hidden in the shadows. But it’s worth it.

    This was fun and really informative! I have a few models of magnifiers, some with a light. I got them when inspired by Joey Santore to do close ups of flowers. (you tube Crime Pays But
    Botany Doesn’t) I’ve been lucky - aside from occasional gnats I only have some scale issues, and they’re easy to see. But everyone should have at least a loupe, not only to see the critters you mentioned, but also the structures of plants in detail. It’s a whole ‘nother world! And bugs can be fascinating, but that’s another rabbit hole!! 🌿🐇

      Yeah I also had a magnifying glass but it was the magnification strength that really did it. I needed x 60 to see them. Anything less just didn’t work. Thank goodness I found them before the whole collection died off. I can already see a difference in growth and it’s only been two days since I treated them. Glad you enjoyed the new style of video. Took me an eternity to make it!!

    For those of us that are generally blind to begin with, they make handheld digital microscopes that can be connected to your phone and will do the same purpose, just saves you the time of picking up the plant and looking at the leaf (point microscope at desired location and look at phone screeen).

      Yeah I was actually looking for one of those so I could record it and put it in the video. But the outlay was too much. The cheaper ones didn’t have good reviews. But if you’ve got any recommendations I’m all ears.

    I’m struggling with thrips too on some of my plants

      Yes!! I’ve only just come across it to be honest. And I found thrips on one plant, and mites on others. No way I could have seen them without the hand lens.

    When I saw the video I thought maybe you had bought one of those boxes that emit a sound that we can’t hear but pests hate it, it’s meant to work with small animals, spiders and woodlice etc from what I saw. I’m really not sure if it would work on super small bugs tho 🤔 maybe it’s something you could look into, oh I wonder if it would keep the vine weevils away 🤔

      Try using a smoke fumigator for the adults - if you have a greenhouse that is - probably wouldn't want to use one in the house or in a conservatory.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 I’ve actually got a few little frogs that moved into the greenhouse this year, I think with the heat it was the only place staying damp after I water the tomatoes etc in there and there’s some good shade at the back. They are great for eating any creatures that get in 🐸

    Do you know if there is a systemic for houseplants that can be put in the soil is safe for pets and has no odor?

      Thanks Karan. I used a system spray - the only one I could find on Amazon. I’ve used it before and know it works but it does cause some mutations and leaf damage to certain plants unfortunately. I haven’t heard of this one you’re referring to. Do you know what it’s called?

      I am looking for one. I get mealy bugs on my streptocarpus. I use alcohol on them. But it seems to damage the plant and I lose it. I take a cutting to root so always have little plants but it takes a while to get them big enough to bloom.

      @@karanmyers5879 I use a systemic spray on mine but Streps are prone to mutations after using it. At least it doesn't kill them and the mutations are only temporary. Let me know if you ever come across this soil thing you mentioned.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 Where I live they have these things called provanto tablets. They look like vitamin pills and get placed in the soil of plants to act as a long term systemic pest killer, however I also heard it can cause mutations.

    Hello.I am new at your chanel but i really like your videos.Had you ever heard or used a mineral oil,dish sopa and lukewarm water solution on treating mites?I treated my croton with that solution and it worked.I put on 200ml water,2ml parafin oil and a little bit of soap.I sparyed the leafes,then used a soft brush to clean every leaf,power washed and spay it again.I repeted the proces for 3 times and for now all is good.I will see for how long🤣

      Thanks Viktorija - I really appreciated your kind comments! That's a great solution and I'm pleased it's worked (so far!) for you. In my case, I'm looking fir something that's a bit less labour intensive. I've currently got my eye on a sulphur hotbox that I think might just be the solution that fits my circumstances the best. They're not cheap, but I think I spend a similar amount on chemicals over the year so I think they'll be worth a go. They'll also solve any fungal / mould issues at the same time.

      Hi Lynn. I used Neudorf Bug & Larvae Killer in the first instance as it's what I had in - not a systemic. That soon got used up! Then I sent for some Miracle-Gro Bug Clear Ultra - a systemic. I had and expected some damage from the the systemic, but I didn't have much choice. Organic methods clearly haven't haven't worked and I pay too much for them to tolerate a balance of bugs.

      Thanks Geoff, I use Neudorf and it is not bad but all natural methods have proved to be a waste of money like you say. Worst problem I have is mealy bug which love the moss on my Neo’s. I am now using Neem oil with a little fairy liquid and tepid rain water and spraying them. The Ultra Clear is good as well and I still have some of that as well. Like the look of your gadget so will see what I can see when it comes.

      @@lynnsmith9397 I tried neem oil for a few months but didn't have much success with it. It smells awful and clogs up my sprayers. Additionally, it didn't appear to make much difference to the bugs! I know some people swear by it but it wasn't for me. I'll keep trying different things but for now I'm sticking with systemics. 🤷‍♂️

    Great video Geoff I’ve been using one for a couple of years now mines the same but called a pocket jewellers loupe, does it take the three LR 44 watch batteries? Mine was only a fiver off eBay when I got it but as you say really useful.

      Cheers Mick! I haven't really examined the loupe properly - just used the other thing as it was a bit easier to see through. They do take small batteries to light up the subject - which is really useful. Just a pity it's taken me so long to figure it out - but the plants - especially the Bougainvillea - have responded instantly.😁

      We all continue to learn in this world and orchid growing has always been a fascination of mine and I'm sure we all have problems in the growing department so anything which will help is worth its weight in gold, your next video should include recommended products to eliminate / eradicate the pests.Just a thought buddy.
