    this brave little horse gallantly did what his rider wanted and completed the course to the best of his ability all the while bleeding to death internally. Then as his last act of bravery went down in a manner to ensure his rider was ok. What a super horse.

    For everyone wondering the Eric was trying to get him to get up by waving the whip around and giving him space just encase he did get up. The horse was perfectly healthy beforehand and there was no underlying reason and I was just that one of his arteries burst and caused him to have heart failure. He would not have been on drugs and he fell in a way so he would not hurt Eric. This horse loved to jump and I'm sure this traumatised Lamaze.

      Stormwolf102 also if a horse lays down it can be because of colic. He was waving his whip around before her seized up meaning that if he thought it was colic the best thing to do is to get the horse up.

      Stripeyhorse studios colic takes awhile before it gets too serious, it isn’t a sudden thing like that, there would have been multiple symptoms and signs beforehand that the horse was colicing.

    • @brendadale852
      @brendadale852 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Hickstead was not colicing. If he had collapsed due to colicing, he never would have made it into the ring in the first place.Colic doesn't come on in a flash. There are a lot of preliminary signs that any horseperson would catch long before colic got to an extreme situation, IF you're paying attention to your horse.
      If your horse does try to roll, due to colic, then it is your absolute duty to keep that horse up on its feet, and keep it walking, no matter how many hours it takes, no matter how much coaxing. You may have to kick him/her in the butt, until the vet gets there. If the colic is just in the stomach, the horse can be intubated to release the gas from the stomach. (Horses can't burp). If the colon is affected, that's a lot harder to deal with. That's when horses feel a lot of pain in their gut, and that's why they want to roll so much. And in that case, when they roll so much, they end up with twisted gut, which is pretty much the killer in these cases.
      In all my 50 years working with horses, Colic is pretty rare. But, let me tell you, the high protein content of alfalfa is a culprit.Feed it sparingly. And if you're feeding your horse anything over 12%, make sure you're working your horse a lot. Just plain oats have 11% protein, and unless you're really working your horse, you don't need anything more than that. If you're working your buddy, a quart in the morning and a quart at night is good. Maybe a little dabble of raw black strap molasses (from the feed mill) to make the grain a little more yummy and add a bit of iron.
      You want to get the young'uns used to the bit, cover it in molasses before you put it in their mouth. My young'uns were educated this way, and as soon as they heard the sound of the bridle, they already had their mouths open just waiting for that molasses covered bit. It's such an easy training tool. You're giving them a gift, and now they love you and look forward to their 'classroom' time. Any training session should be something the young horse looks forward to. AND, don't forget, the horse is not a human. It's not your pet. Horses are highly intelligent, and very socially structured animals. When deprived of their social structure, they can get severely stressed.
      I didn't mean to give a lecture here, but I am totally into horses. Anybody who endeavours to own a horse has to understand horse psychology. If you want to have a REAL horse under your ass you'd better really understand that animal. Pink ties in its mane may be cute, but that's not what the horse needs or wants. A horse is not a pet, it's a very large 1,000 lb herd animal with specific needs.

    The saddest part, beside the tragedy, is that Eric didn't know right away what was happening and tried to get Hickstead on his feet because he thought he was colicing.
    Because of that he was attacked and accused for long to abuse the horse, which he did not.

      I was late for this also..., and I haven't worked, trained and bred horses; since 2003...; but this brought up tears and sweet/horrible memories.
      I had a young mare die of heart attack..., right infront of me...; so I know EXACTLY how Eric felt in that moment 😢 Your first instinct is "must be cholic"..., because you just cannot fathom, that the horse that ran/jumped so frisky and strong, just a minute ago..; could "just die" like that. 😭
      You've bred them , loved them, trained them and had so many WONDERFUL times together. And you KNOW You've taken care of this horse, as a family member and given them ALL THE BEST IN THEIR LIFE !; treated them like a KING..., (or in my case, a QUEEN)...; and You've loved them as your own child, since the moment they "landed in your arms", at birth. ❤
      How can a thing like this happen to a healthy , happy , and GREATLY LOVED horse!?
      The truth is... , It's the ups and downs of loving and living.
      All you can do is your best!; and cherish the gift of love, that the animals and people in our lives, gifts us.
      No one can ruler of life and death, on this wonderful planet, FULL OF LIFE; that we're been given.
      Rejoice over LIFE AND LOVE ❤; and hold your loved ones close.

    For people who don’t know what happened I got you ! So basically Hickstead had a aortic rupture, it means when all the layers of the aorta 🫀 will tear, causing blood to leak out of it (im not so sure if it happens the same in horses 🐎) sadly, the horse died when it was 15 he died straight after a round! Bless him x

    Autopsy apparently confirmed aortic rupture (rupture of a major blood vessel close to the heart) as the cause of death. Sudden dramatic drop in blood pressure -> as apparent, the horse collapsed and lost consciousness very quickly. The leg movements are a prey animal's normal reflex to something like this, not a sign of pain. The would have been no warning, no way to know something like this might happen, and nothing that could be done once it happened. Tragic but fortunately not painful :-(

      If the horse is physically capable and enjoying himself, then nothing is wrong with it! It’s good for horses to work as they get older (which 15 is just getting into), just like it is for humans to maintain physical activity throughout their life

  • @RavenSaint1
    @RavenSaint1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In response to those who think a horse could not enjoy a thing like show jumping are wrong. I have seen foals who have not been introduced to jumping, besides having been allowed to be loose with mother in field with jumps set up for training. They will check out the jump and then will jog around before giving the jump a try. Then try to stop them from jumping stuff. We had fences taller than we knew a foal could jump. We never had anything over 4 feet in the paddocks where mothers and babies. Horses in the wild will jump things for the sheer joy of playing with herd mates. There are horses who will kill themselves to keep their partner (rider) safe. There are horses who will kill themselves in the wild to protect their herd and babies. Horses are very herd oriented, they will do anything for those they love.

    Lamazes' initial belief that the horse had gone down due to Colic is logical because this kills more horses than anything else. An aortic rupture wouldn't be the first thing you'd think of.
    Competition horses can get colic after a competing.

    Coming from this showjumping world, starting at age five and riding through out late twenties. Jumping at the pre lims of the Spruce Meadows draft. You realize somethings, you dont really love your horse if your slamming on their joints for money, fame and glory. Riders get addicted to the sport and the horse will do anything to please you. My horse died of something like this because you can push it too hard. It takes years for you to wake up and realize that this is cruel and unfair. I live every day regretting what I rode for, what I found glory in. Its not natural to jump so high and for so long. You can write what you think of me, but this is coming from a ex showjumper. Am compassionate now, hes waving his whip around because he does not want his horse to loose his glory. Simple. He did not even attempt to loosen his girth so the he can breath.........

      Aortic ruptures aren't caused by being pushed too hard, it can happen ANYWHERE at any moment, someone in the comments horse had a aortic rupture while in their STALL and all that horse did was do trail rides maybe once a year.
      And they couldn't get the tack off, Eric loved Hickstead more than you can imagine, he was considering to quit the sport after Hicksteads death, not to mention Hickstead loved what he did.
