  • Gabriel Chrisman, proprietor of Victorian Cycles (www.VictorianCycles.com) explains and demonstrates a reproduction 1880's cross-frame hard tire safety bicycle that he built himself. He tells a little about the history of Victorian bicycles, and how this is the missing link between the Ordinary (high wheel) and the pneumatic safety bike. The bike he's showing off here was commissioned by a major TV production to use in their upcoming series. To learn more about the construction of this bicycle, go to www.victoriancycles.com/post/...

    Wonderful presentation, Gabriel! I didn't know that you made bicycles. It's good to know because I really don't like the bikes they make today. I love the old fashioned easy peddle bikes. I will spread the word.
    Thanks for sharing such great historical information and it's wonderful to see that your experience is getting out into the world for all to know.

    I've only seen these in books, seeing them used makes me appreciate them moreI have no wish to ride an Ordinary, but this looks very practical, although it must have been rough on the roads they had back then!

    Such a wonderful bicycle, Gabriel! I own a very old Dunlop bicycle, possibly dates from the 1950s or even earlier. I learnt to ride my first two wheel bicycle on that bike. I still have it, but the saddle is getting fragile, and the tires need replacing. Just watching you on your 1880s style bike was lovely! Makes me wish I was younger, and could still ride.
    Thank you for all of the information about Victorian bicycles! ~Janet in Canada

    Well made bicycles like the ones you build are very enduring machines. They can easily outlive their original owners with just a little common sense care. That type of rubber tire was also used on children's tricycles up through the 1930s at least. I have one of the tools that pull and twist the wire inside the tire and hope to do some tire repairs on old collectable trikes in the future, since collecting old tricycles is a hobby of mine.

    I love old English bicycles, I had an old BSA and Atlas cycle, mostly used by industrial workers of the late 1900's. Me personally I'm a cyclist. I ride it all year around, the pleasant Canadian summer or harsh freezing weather me and me bicycle is always together.
    Cheers !!!!

    I wish you had talked a bit about how riding the hard tire fixed gear bike is different from riding a more modern one.
    I guess the invention of the freewheel really changed the whole cycling experience, probably almost as much as multi gear transmissions. BTW that is a beautiful frame.

    I would have liked to see how the hard tire straining wire is brazed.
    Is the joint seamless in the sense that it doesn't give a perceptible bump?

    Such a little drive sprocket. Is it even 1.5 to 1? Guessing the riders and roads of the time though weren’t in a hurry.

    • @GChrisman1
      @GChrisman1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      This one is 1.6 to 1. With 30" wheels, the gearing ends up being the same as a 48" ordinary. The roads were pretty rough, and the people buying the safety bicycles at that time weren't the racers.

    I was just thinking at times like these you should be the ones coping the best as your lifestyle doesn’t require too much distruction to the planets health and doesn’t particularly contribute to the constant rising power of the poisonous capitalism that most modern people thrive on . I think we should all take at least a slice of your modest but yet romantic , simple but yet sophisticated lifestyle and we would all do the planet a favour . This Virus is a curse and yet a blessing as I’m hoping that things will change for the better after this and people will start to appreciate little pleasures in life more and see how destructive materialism and social media really is.
