Fabulous. Margaret John who plays Mrs Phelps was a brilliant Welsh actress who played Doris (The next door neighbour) in Gavin & Stacey. She sadly passed away a few years back. It's fantastic to see her acting such a different part and so much younger too. Thanks Jez 👍🏼
Very interesting lawyers and law students should watch this prog, so much can be learnt from here, Especially on how to litigate cases especially the contentious ones
Another great episode, I thought given the current fuss about Wagatha Christie it would be interesting to watch a libel case. Thanks Jez once again for uploading!
Brilliant. A good reenactment that still resonates. I remember working in family planning when the new Gillick guidelines came through. We were forced to discard the common sense policy of discouraging under age sexual activity, or sex education heavily weighted towards abstinence, or consultation and consent with parental support. Usually only difficult teens in danger (as seen here) would get through. Gillick made the doctors and nurses frightened so we more or less banned all under age kids (including cases of abuse and incest) from our clinics and left them nowhere to go. Much better now, we have dedicated clinics for them and can give advice and in rare cases prescriptions.
that was a good one. Sometimes in these shows I just watch the beginning then skip to the verdict, but I was hooked by the script and performances in this one. I knew I recognised the girl, she was in the kids TV series The Changes. And of course John Barron and Steven Yeardly and Dennis Chinnery I've seen in other things. Also the woman who played the mother was familiar but I couldn't place her. Excellent all round.
Stephen Yardley also appeared as a master forger in Secret Army. Which is a series Terrence Hardiman appeared in. Mr Hardiman also appeared in a Miss Marple episode, playing a solicitor
This episode is apparently also included as an extra on the DVD of a series called The XYY Man - Stephen Yardley, who plays Dr Thanet, is also The XYY Man - or, as my late mother kept calling it, The XYZ Man!
A very good case of the mother not telling her daughter anything about sex. She was trying to cotton wool the daughter. She should have at least try to explain anything to her daughter about sex. It was in my opinion both the parent's did not want their daughter to know anything about sex. In the classroom sex is taught but again the daughter's mother was even against that. So how does the daughter learn about sex when her parent's would not explain anything to her ?. This was a very good play. Thank you for uploading it. I enjoyed it . PC. 17. 03. 2023.
agreed. he is my favorite judge of the whole series. i tried to find more of his work on youtube, but found mostly trump videos, as trump uses the same name as an alias.
I love some of the mis-transcriptions in the captions: in this episode, learned counsel’s “my lord” is rendered instead “baloney” ! With a later witness, “my lord” is transcribed as “mother.”
I was surprised this wasn't directed by David Maloney, as both Dennis Chinnery and Stephen Yardley were in "Genesis Of The Daleks" a few months before this. But I guess as Bernard Horsfall wasn't the judge and Graham Weston the prosecuting counsel I should have known.
Thank goodness for a Jury with good values! Born in 1943 to older parents was informed very young that babies did NOT grow on gooseberry bushes. I think a lot of people missed what the doctor was hinting at; that the pill (which was illegal in Ireland in those days) could be legally prescribed for period pains.
Jeanne you're right, I made a mistake, yes it was so sad and his poor daughter a baby who never got to know her dad, I always thought it was a drink/drug related death but I think he had a heart condition if my memory serves me ( which it usually doesn't) correctly. ........ just quickly looked it up, yes it was a heart condition, he died in '79, he was 31. I thought he was younger too. Have a lovely day Jeanne. xxx
@@Keithbarber That isn't an answer to the question actually asked, but even in it's own terms it's non-sequitur. How does a story being scripted demonstrate legal accuracy?

Prior to the Defamation Act 2013 the Crown Court used to exceptionally hear civil defamation. Alternatively I guess they could have started a new TV series called Queen's Bench!
Linda was a very savvy girl for 15 knowing she could possibly get pregnant. My mother got pregnant at 19 six months before this show went out and said "Well, we never thought it would happen to us." Such was the state of sex education back then. Thankfully my grandparents were understanding (mainly because my grandfather was an illegitimate child born in 1923 (!) ). This case is fascinating and why we are right in the United States to make libel and defamation an almost impossible action under the First Amendment. Here we have two doctors who should lose their medical licenses for violating patient confidentiality. The older doctor should have been willing to go to jail. The mother did have her daughter run away and did believe the doctor's action were responsible in some way. This is case that should be tried in the local newspaper, not the high court.
Why is ok for the wigged to say what they think? I put it to you that you were such and such! But those in the box have to be pillaried and maligned by judge and wigged assistants. The law is an ass and the program shows how much so that is.
I think that what really bugged the mother was that the daughter went to someone else for help. Someone had to stand up for the kid, cheers for the doctor who took action.

Yes. John Barron was one of our best and best-loved classic actors of that time.
