After so many years since S1E18 all that I can say is this: Subaru was simply lost and tried to stick to at least something he was sure about, that he loves Emilia. Rem wasn't even that hurt by this, because Subaru loves her just as much (he says this right in her face later on in the LN).
This video actually damages the reputation of Re:Zero too much. There were too many stupid people who watched it as a summary and took the jokes as canon, spreading dumb misinformation all over the internet.

There is this video essay about the show called Re:Zero The Otaku's Tale by Sparky's World that actually vocalized all the things I loved about Re:Zero and helped me like get a few people to watch the show or reconsider what they think about it even back when s2 wasnt a thing. You can check it out on your own time or make it a part of the farming grind. I think you'll find it interesting either way.

You keep saying this but yeah, it is insane how Subaru in the eyes of the others changed from the clown in the royal selection into hero in the white whale subjugation and sin archbishop hunt within such a short time.
People sometimes forget that at this point of the story Subaru is a shut-in 17 year old. It is normal to want to do some of the things he does or interpret some thingd differently because of a lack of maturity. Subaru is doing pretty damn well if you ask me. Mainly because he's pretty look at reflecting on the sh*t he does and for his honesty.
About the whole rem thing, imo if he said yes to rem it was because he was falling back on her as a last resort. She made him realize that loving and chasing Emilia was actually the right thing to do instead of running away with someone he wasn’t fully in love with. That’s why sloth if starts there I think
I'm 1 of those Bias, I can forgive Rem and befriend with her as Subaru, but I can't romantically involve with her if I'm in Subaru place. Moreover, Subaru already has feeling for Emilia at that point. And I don't even like Emilia.
Subaru is smart. The anime adaptation makes Subaru look stupid in some scenes when he actually wasn't. I also love Re:Zero but I don’t like STR because people who love Re:Zero don’t love it just for Return by Death, but for the story, characters, writing, and world.

Parody are made for basically everything, if it "hurts" the community, it is clearly not the video's fault. I see a lot of people claiming that, but no one says the same when he did videos on aot, no game no life, SAO, tokyo ghoul. And other creators have done parodies for so long you cannot in good faith say that a mere video did "irreparable" damage to an anime community, especially one as huge as re:zero

Rezero, especially when he released the video, was a niche isekai without an established fanbase, and a lot of the people that watched his video never actually watched the show. This lead to a ton of people dismissing the anime based on the parody and some people even criticizing the show based on the parody, and it was very easy to tell when this was the case. To this day, this video has more views than almost any other video relating to rezero. Several of the most unfunny and inaccurate jokes in the community are from this video, and most people I’ve seen dismissing the show for being waifu bait or meaningless suffering got their opinions either from this video or his other, arguably even worse video on Rezero.
