I think the key difference is that Gigguk is coming from a place of love and appreciation for the material. He's making jokes about Erwin's plans failing, which they undoubtedly do. But we all know he doesn't hate Erwin. The humor comes from a stripping away all of that context and seriousness and portraying Erwin as a dimwitted clown, which he clearly isn't in the actual show. Meanwhile your criticism of Erwin seems to just come from anger and genuine hate for the character. Maybe your views will change in future seasons. Maybe they won't. I'm kinda looking forward to seeing how/if your opinion changes as we go. But worried that you may have already set your mind against it. We'll see I guess.
He's gonna hate season 3. When... Erwin decides to suicide charge instead of just going over the wall and teaming up on the collosal while he's trapped inside lol. Oh no the beast will kill a bunch of lonely horses while his only two allies that can fight get smokes by Levi and Mikasa. Tbh a lot of Erwin's plans are dumb. But my bet is after spending 3 seasons of shit talking Erwin he will still say he was the better choice over Armin. Mark. My. Words...
@@TexasGreed you might want to give a spoiler warning and some line breaks before this. You dont want them to open this comment and see this major spoiler.
@@TexasGreed hey could you maybe put a spoiler warning at the top of your comment? nerdy nightly obviously haven't reached s3 yet and while there's a possibility they don't read the comments, there are viewers here who also could be spoiled.
@colinrobertson7580 It's there for the nitpickers. Stopping the plot to explain horse breeding, kmph, and endurance would have been ridiculous. Especially considering Annie probably just titaned up and ran most of the way anyway.
@@colinrobertson7580 yes it is only there for the nitpickers who only wants to find the wrong things. Even without it theres something called suspension of disbelief. He said horses doesnt work like that in reality but theres no titans in reality. ODM doesnt work in reality since no human body can take those kinds of speed. But yeah okay, we accept ODM works but faster horses doesnt. Really smart.
@raylenerobin sure, but suspension of disbelief is easier for things that don't currently exist. If you have a world where you can touch a burner hot enough to cook food without burning your hand, it seems strange and needs explanation. If you have a new unknown technology that selectively heats things, you don't need to explain how it works to suspend disbelief in the same way. Changes to known laws of physics are more jarring than something completely new.
@@colinrobertson7580 The mid ep cards doesn't really give u completely new information that isn't given during the ep itself. Its just a way to combine all the info and present it in a clean format.
Parody is an art form known for pointing out the most obvious, surface levels things, because they will find comedic purchase with the widest audience. Nice try though 😜
@@NerdyNightly you just pointed out that is surface level criticism and still don't see the irony my man... I find some of your criticisms funny in the same way that I find this parody funny, because it points out a lot of nonsensical stuff out of context, and it is funny, this is not to say that everything in the show is perfect and wonderful and that you should love it, I'm fine with someone not liking what I do (just as you pointed out before) because it's entertaining seeing someone's process, the show does have it's flaws and I'm not the biggest Erwin stan... but it's been almost a month of asking for Erwin's job and I don't know if you realize that nobody wants it, when the parody says "Just another day in the survey corp" it's not a dig only at Erwin, this has been this way forever, and you'll be shocked to learn how the scouts operated before Erwin took over... a government that sacrificed a huge percentage of their population and recruits 12 year olds to fight Titans clearly doesn't think highly of human life...
So I’ve commented this a few times already but I think that a lot of the pushback is from the false dichotomy that Erwin is the worst leader for the scouts vs Erwin is a god character who is infallible. Nobody is arguing that. Erwin gets a shit ton of people killed and that is an absolute fact. The argument comes from the discussion of is picking another commander who will play things safe be better for humanity. I personally, while not agreeing with the methods, think that Erwin being gung ho with sacrifices is better for humanity as a whole. He is doing a gamble that he will gain knowledge on the titans and how to beat them before the next time the Colossal or Armored Titan show up and tear another hole in the wall. Trost resulted in more casualties than the scouts mission in the end of season 1 showing that they can’t be sitting ducks forever. Does anyone in the in-world government like him for that? No, we have explicitly been shown that much already. The grouping of views of an entire comment section to being bumbling idiots, which a lot of comments I’ve seen have been, into one large straw man of points no one is making is what I believe is the issue and the point of pushback I am planning on continuing watching the reaction series and it sucks that other people try to get their kicks in by spoiling but please, if nothing else, just represent our arguments correctly
Ervin is a shit not because the mission is a loss, win and loss is a destiny which I accept after giving my 100%. he is stupid because of his methods which are not even average. Literally a dumb person. I don't even care about him in season 1 , but when he decided to sacrifice everyone's life, without actually trying anything, when Levi fought that talking Titan.
I'm sorry you think they read your arguments. They went pretty quick from actively engaging with disagreement in their comments to registering at a glance that people disagree and lumping them into one box they assume has all the same points which they never actually bring up anymore. Then came the "Leave mean comments because good for youtube." Yeah, that's you, you are mean comments, you are algorithm food.
This exactly! Though I feel like our arguments will not represented correctly cause theyre so assured that theyre right and aren't open to discussion. You could see it from the start of this whole discussion, Clarous is much more open whilst Nerdy just shuts down anything that doesn't support what he believes
Not to mention the timing of when he's gung ho. He's gung ho when they're literally being attacked right at that moment, and later when they decide to move on Annie in Stohess. Sure it's risky but where else are they gonna have annie where they know where she is? When you've identified a threat like that you cant just leave it be. And the first time with Annie in the forest what are they gonna do? Back away? Its not an option when you have someone chasing at you that is literally faster than you, you cant just cancel mission and spawn back into safety like in a videogame lol. Did Erwin do all the right moves? N... well, actually yes so far. The only thing he couldve done better is have Eren turn into a titan after they captured. The female titan the first time. Other than that there was never a better option to be done.
Fanbase also responds depending on how Reacter acts. It's not just the anime or AOT. It's true for every fandom. If you want a positive fanbase, you gotta create one. There are certain people who can make critical statements in a funny way like Gigguk and noone in the fandom will be offended. A lot of channels has thier own memes correlating to their reaction that everyone laughs and enjoy. You seem to actually hate the show sometimes even tho you don't, it comes off as you do and negative energy only creates more negative energy. This was supposed to be funny vdo. So ofcourse he will make fun of Erwin and everyone else. But you seem too proud that he's roasting Erwin. And clearly in the discussion, your hate is so visible. How do you want fanbase to react to that. People who come here to watch reaction are obviously here cuz they want to enjoy the show and reaction but all these unnecessary hate ruins the experience which then make them hate you and comment hateful things. Usually in this type of reaction I'll compliment Gigguk or quote some of the funny lines from vdo in the comments but instead I am doing this and that just proves it. I'm bad at explaining but I hope some of the points got through.
Yes honestly seems like this live action m junkie has ill intent, song don't like how anime sings live actors can't , so if you try to play it off as unrealistic
He's just desperate to be in the right about the points he makes. The fact that he's questioning the show's writing (which is something very good to do) but he himself can't take people that question his reasoning or explain some things to him is a little anoying. He's always trying to outsmart everything and everyone that answers him in an unnecessary way not realizing that it's not mutual and people is just answering what they can to explain some things. I mean, I understand that some people are toxic and rude as hell and some even insult them, that's never justified (including the spoiler thing which deserves the banning) but if you let your ego get into this you're not gonna enjoy the show. I would expect this kind of "hateful" mood in later seasons when the show touches some delicate themes, but this mood in such early-episodes reactions takes you off guard. I still enjoy their reactions and like them but dude the mood is getting heavy, they need to relax a little.
At this point, they don't care about the fanbase. They even admitted at banning some accounts. They're just going to hate on us even more every time we prove them wrong. The're the most egotistical people on TH-cam who keep insisting they're right. That is going to be their downfall.
It's a mystery show, that's what makes it special, so u have to be patient with it cuz that's what you signed for. Just enjoy the show and try to figure out the puzzle pieces cuz if u get yourself into such feud for a long time, then u'll miss a lot.
to explain the survey corps / recon corps / scouting regiment / scouting legion joke: the english translation of the name of that military branch is different on basically every single streaming service out there. if you read the manga online it also has different translations depending on what website you read it on. this used to be a bit of a meme back in the day when no one really knew how to call the survey corps.
That is very funny. I'm a little worried about the Crunchyroll subtitles, as they've already let me down a couple times, but I'm hoping it doesn't affect too much of the show!
@@NerdyNightly I watch the show once with sub and once with dub, sometimes this one or that one is better but for the most part they match well enough. The sub is more accurate to the word for word translation while the dub tries to make it closer to colloquial English. It’s an interesting comparison if you ever have the time to watch the same episodes sub and dub back to back.
Nerdy mentioned something about how S1 doesn't seem like a good, self-contained season of a television show, which makes sense if you're looking at it that way. But it wasn't originally created as a television show, and it really isn't like a lot of other anime (especially shonen) where it is broken into very clear and distinct arcs that you can easily split into seasons. Anime is also a medium of adaptation that traditionally remains in lock-step with its source material, so you can't really expect pacing, structure, or story changes that allow it to fit into a more traditional "season" structure. So, because the majority of Attack on Titan's source material is one long, continuous story. The "season" break is purely artificial, because you can't have a 40, 50, 60 episode season to try to get all your answers in over the course of a long arc. So it makes sense that there are still tons of unanswered questions. It isn't something like Game of Thrones (ASoIaF) where you are adapting a first book with a beginning, middle, and end into one season. The chapter by chapter structure of manga release doesn't lend itself to that kind of storytelling unless you have clear cut arcs, like Naruto or MHA or Demon Slayer or something. It's just structured differently. Idk - maybe he gets this already and doesn't care. Just something that came to my mind when watching.
I said similar things on the s1 finale but people have said they aren’t reading the YT comments. Maybe someone on patreon will say something like this.
Exactly so. The end of the fight with Annie, the end credit scene, then the start of where S2 picks up happened in the span of a few pages in the manga, and the next chapter came out on schedule the next month. That's not to mention that they fluffed the last few episodes out to better fit the story into the common anime arc structure as well... Almost all of episode 24 and half of 25 was anime only. They would have had to alter the story immensely to make it "better television."
No you’re pretty much on point. I’ve been noticing this with some western media also that follows a similar structure of being mostly mystery and getting heavy criticism for it. I think it’s a western mindset type of thing and it’s not really their fault. We’re just too used to seeing one type of formula because it works tbh.
I keep hearing dueling thoughts between "It's paced this way because the Manga is paced this way" and " The Manga has way better pacing, and the anime pads its runtime with filler". I don't know which is true, but in my opinion a good adaptation stands on its own, and uses the change in media format to enhance the story. I don't feel like that has been done effectively for AoT, but I'm hopeful that changes for me.
@@NerdyNightly It adapts 2 arcs, the first one is the one you like. The 2nd one is really just the start of another story. The 2nd season is also different from the 1st arc. It's more world building and tension. The 3rd has elements of the 1st arc. Which is why some think you will hit peak enjoyment in season 3. Also Season 3 pays off a lot of the foreshadowing of the other 2 seasons. Then season 4 further recontextualizes things and you realize what the story was about all along.
No, this does not validate your opinion of Erwin. The creator found humor in it but you found hate. The rest of us found humor in it because it was what happened. But like the maker of this video, we all know where we are going with this later. Unlike someone who already written of the character.
I love how Nerdy doesn't understand how satire works. Imagine someone felt Hannes was a dick for running away with Mikasa and Eren, and feeling validated by this video
The reason why people disagree with “it shouldn’t take (x) episodes to get answers” take is that, for one, the show revolves around the mysteries it sets up. The mysteries are good enough, and it feeds you *just* enough answers that it makes it worth keeping going. Also, most people enjoyed all of season 1. It’s fine if ya didn’t, but I think enjoying it fully makes it easier to keep playing into.
I mean, I don't generally agree with it. It's the weakest argument in defense of season 1, which is likely why I think it was focused on so much in this video, despite there being many stronger arguments. However, if it's true that their assessment of the show's quality goes hand in hand with how much information they've been given about the world and the titans in general, then of course the only answer is "you'll find out later". With that being said, most people didn't feel the same way they did. Even people who would agree that season 1 was the worst season wouldn't say that it was because of the lack of information given to the audience. There's an understanding that the entire point of the story is to slowly reveal the true nature of the titans. In any other situation, arguing that "the show becomes good on season 6 episode 5" is extremely weak. To put it simply. If I said that the reason why I dislike a show is because a certain character hasn't been revealed yet, then a fair argument would be that the character will be revealed eventually, just wait until future seasons. If I had a grievance with the show that was more than the reveal of certain plot points, then using the same argument wouldn't make sense.
Criticizing him is fine, but their criticism being "why didn't he just know more or run away" is the baffling part. The first episode shows the previous commander literally having a mental breakdown due to the stress of carrying all of his men's deaths and injuries without getting any closer to knowing a single thing about the titans... Erwin may not be taking flawless victories, but he's sure as hell making more progress than any of the commanders before him.
@@NerdyNightly I think criticizing his recklessness is what most did back then and the story does itself. But it's not plot armor that keeps him from being punished. It is the fact no one wants the job and also he gets something back which is better than his predecessors. And in the context of the lives they intentionally threw away before, his use of the survey core is small potatoes. None of them are expected to live long. It's a token to show something is being done. The lives are already written off.
@@NerdyNightly "Criticizing him is fine, but their criticism being (why didn't he just know more or run away) is the baffling part" Is what Ayo Trippin said. Not "Criticism him is fine but not their criticism". He didn't mean, that you are not allowed to criticize him, he meant your logic of: "why didn't he just know more or run away" is just stupid.
The thing about horses. If you only seriously read the mid card in episodes that spoke about the horses this issue wouldn't have happened. Those horses are not the horses you find in the real world. The show has made it clear. These are specially bred horses for the Survey Corps. Their top speed is far more than the average horses and also they have far more endurance..plus another great Detail that you conveniently misrepresent is that the distance between the walls is 130 km. Yes the distance between two walls is that that much BUT they weren't going to the next wall. They went to the forest of giant trees. This was supposed to be a small expedition as stated in episode 14 during the courtroom scene. If they actually made it to the wall Maria then what kind of small journey would that be. Again you didn't pay attention to the show. The trees aren't anywhere close to Maria. If they were the huge 60 metres tall walls will be seen clearly in the background somewhere. But they were not. Which means the distance of the expedition wasn't even close to 130km. The problem isn't that you don't like the show but that you call everything a plot hole. You fail to understand the situation of the survey corps, you failed to understand the government mentality and their working. You also failed to understand the way the military police functions and hence your issue with Annie And that is why Erwin doesn't make sense to you. Erwin's decisions come from a thought process unlike yours because his character is written taking the dire situation of humanity in consideration with every decision he makes. Humanity can literally go extinct in 1 day if the armoured and collosal show up. Eren can't do anything against them. Pixis made it clear in episode 11 i believe by explaining what will happen if another wall falls. Again every line in this show matters. And if they can break Rose then nothing stops them from destroying Sina. Your argument that it lead to so many people dying doesn't hold because if he doesn't do those things the whole wall will fall and then the death toll will be 1 million and not 1000. That is why the authorities don't go after Erwin. Because they know the achievement Erwin has made by finding out the spy who is a Titan. No one in history has achieved this feat. And he has most certainly reduced humanity's chances of extinction. You have missed so much important detail and then you question that the show is plot convenience filled and has plot holes. If you really need someone to just answer your questions. I happily will without spoiling anything. Just to make it clear there are no plot holes. You guys aren't the first ones to watch this show. 100's of people have. Analysed this show in great detail and they didn't find any plot holes. So you should just trust in the writer instead of calling it bad writing. I have watched aot on 40+ reaction channels. And Nerdy you are literally the only one i have seen who doesn't get season 1 or has so many problems with it. To every single person ever season 1's decisions make sense even when they have not watched further seasons. Plus this whole fuming over Erwin everytime. It's ridiculous. You are literally trying to justify your thoughts by using a parody video. Gigguk's personal views on Aot are also posted on his channel and he loves this show.. He literally considers Aot a masterpiece of a show. A modern anime that will go down in history as iconic. So don't think Gigguk would agree on this with you. This also shows that people have no problems with making jokes by ignoring important plots because that is what a parody video is about. However you are serious and question everything but When the show answers it you are not paying attention or forgetting the fact.Making jokes is one thing but Gigguk understands why everything is happening. .No one says his plans succeeded but his plan was perfect for what was know to humans. The way Titans work is not something he can just predict. There is a reason why there is a joke that while everyone is on season 1 Erwin is on season 4. People aren't defending Erwin because they love him. They are because his actions make more sense and will actually save more people than the suggestions you are making
@@raylenerobin for that i would need to join their Patreon and then get the link from there. Normally i wouldn't mind but seriously it is off putting the way Nerdy has reacted till now. I can't pay and watch stuff that will only irritate me seeing them continuously criticize or call it a plot hole for something told to them 5 minutes ago. Besides after watching aot 40+ times. There isn't enough of a driving factor to pay and watch it lol
The interesting thing about this show is not that it gets good in season 3, but that while watching some parts before you just don't realize how good it is because you don't know what is happening. It's only after a while that everything you saw before clicks, kinda like the ending of Get Out.
Being adversarial with your viewers is a weird flex. Its like getting worked up by the time discrepancy in Empire Strikes Back when Luke goes to train with Yoda. That shouldn't ruin your experience with the movie
Horses: The argument is she's jogging as a titan as fast as horses sprinting. She can keep that up and cover the distance in no time. You're missing the argument.
There's no shot she ran across the middle ring in titan form. It destroys the entire purpose of her undercover life if a single person sees her. She somehow crosses the 100+ kilometers necessary somehow, and it isn't running a horse into the ground.
@@NerdyNightly She is stationed in Stohess (the city the Annie vs Eren fight takes place in). It's outer wall is less than 100km to the 2nd wall. The 2nd wall is 30 km to the forest where she get's hacked by Levi. In a side story she arranged for a day off for the day in exchange for doing a favor for her CO. The OVA is about the favor. Which gives her almost 2 days to get off shift and make her way. A average horse can hit ~48km/h. Horses bred for speed can do 70km/h. She is seen sustaining a jog faster than scouting horses are sprinting. From Stohess to a wall near Karanase would only take her 2-3h the first night at 48km/h. The cover of darkness and running faster than horses can chase means it really doesn't matter if she's spotted. She can climb the wall at any spot as shown in the show. Her total travel time is less than 4h each way if the scouting horses are just average horses. She had almost 2 days. She is not a horse and doesn't need a horse. Minor Spoiler Only 1 of the titans we've seen have a short time limit. The rest is just based on the users stamina and control with it and easily stretches on for days. One titan can sustain a form running around at higher speeds for many months.
@@NerdyNightly Oh my god. You really have to stop it. If you have hundreds of people coming over and over saying that your point is flawed. Don't you at least question yourself on your own views? Your confusion is understandable but not your stubbornness to accept that there can be an explanation. The answers will come, but even without the facts, I find it hard to accept that you cannot imagine any scenario, not even one, in which the scene can play logically as it was presented. As I watched the show, I also came across many questions and enigmas of which I wanted to resolve. The difference is that I (and maybe most of us) took it from the point of possibility (what is possible) while it seems you do from the point of impossibility. Or at least that's my take on your reactions. Your questions will be answered, and I hope that when they do, you find them satisfactory when you get them right, or feel amused when you get them wrong. But you must be warned: With every answered questions, there will be +2 new questions, and so all the way 'til the final season. If you are unable to see the possibilities in the events of the show, my honest advice is for you to drop it as you will not enjoy it. And again, it doesn't have to do with you being right or wrong. It's your inability to see that things can make sense. And no, I'm not a hater. I had enjoyed your reactions every since I found you, up to this show. It is just really frustrating seeing you stuck on one view. I guess it is like sharing something you like with someone you care and not getting the same appreciation as you do.
We are in a world where titans exist and body breaking ODM gears with extreme speeds are being used but stronger and faster horses are impossible and makes the show bad. (Which were shown in info cards). Really smart if u ask me.
Sorry but the idea that people are just misremembering how much they actually enjoyed the early seasons is pretty dumb. How do you think we got to the later seasons if we didn't genuinely like the stuff that led up to it? The mystery was part of the enjoyment.
Didn't expect a Garnt crossover on this channel lmao edit: Oh and you are now legally obliged to watch his "Why I Actually Preferred Attack On Titan S2 Over S1" when you are done with S2, and "Attack on Titan is Incredible Now." after S3
So I think there’s also one cultural thing that gets overlooked. Western media is made to start and end in that season with the possibility of a continuation. But anime is different in that it’s sole purpose is to market the source material to boost sales and garner recognition so a lot of anime never feel like they’re complete by the end of the season. Overall, I’m enjoying the reactions to this and The Expanse. Keep it up!
Difference is Gigguk actually loves Attack on Titan. He understands it, he knows where it's going, so he totally knows what to make fun of. One thing is making fun of something you love and understand (we all LOVE Gigguk's video) the other one is just crapping all over the series because you don't get it. 😎 And with that, I am now done watching your reactions to AoT. This is just gross.
I disagree with the idea that a show must make sense very soon, since that is part the mystery element to see the forshadowing and clues which will make you make the right conclusion before the reveal.
And here we are yet again, beating a dead horse while we’re all acknowledging Erwin has failed on multiple occasions. People are saying to stop watching it because we don’t wanna watch you hate on it more.
...so don't watch. I'm low-key loving it. Makes me feel vindicated for falling out of the show, myself. Which makes me think the only thing left for this show is hardcore fans because everyone else meh'd out.
The beauty and genius of this story is that it is so different in its telling, which can definitely feel jarring/clunky. For the first 2 seasons things happen and you have no idea why, but that's because our characters also have no idea why, and we get to go along the often frustrating journey of discovery with them. The writing gets more phenomenal as you understand more and more what's happening. Like, S2 is fantastic AND most of S2 doesn't really fully make sense until S3. The author asks you to trust the process and bear with the multitudes of unasnwered questions and the growing mystery and intrugue and the weird structure until the deeply satisfying payoffs hit. It's not that the show doesn't get good until S3, it's that S3 is when everything finally really starts making sense. Please keep watching and critiquing and ignore the toxic in the fan base, but also, this story won't be told the way you might usually expect a story to be told so try to roll with it ✌️
It hurts cuz I also value her highly as a character, granted not quite S tier but still, and yet he has all his other comments on the show that makes me think he's watching the show with rapid onset amnesia and a proportional attention span, it makes it harder to defend Mikasa as a character without just lookin like a simp.
I didn't find anything interesting in Mikasa's character besides the fact that she's OP (yeah in a bad way) right until the second part of final season cause then she got a good old inner conflict which made her a deep character
I think the observation that the scouts often fail is true. And from that observation, making jokes that Erwin is a bum who doesn't give a dam is funny. But when you try to reason out why they fail, it just doesn't hold up. Anyways, I think a lot of people's issue here is the Erwin discussions seem to have eclipsed every other aspect of the show and distracted from the more intriguing/mystery side of the show.
I am more forgiving of the earlier seasons because of the later ones. Having the context of the later seasons shows the authors ability to use strong literary techniques in the earlier seasons that foreshadows the big reveals and moments that happen in the story. But I will agree that the story is slow and confusing in the first two seasons that is strongly helped by a binge watch. I look forward to seeing you both react to the moments that made me fall in love with this show.
The earlier seasons is because the show was supposed to be deception of your supposed to think that the plot is simple but that it's a great intense show
The thing about AoT is that it is in large part a mystery show, even though it doesn't really look like it on the surface. Not getting everything explained up front is just par for the course, but when you look back on it, the clues were there all along.
Aot is something you got the pay all attention. I think what ppl are saying is the growing bias on Erwin, made you gloss over key details that would have made the overall season make more sense. This coming from also not a die hard AoT fan. You guys are great and fun btw. Love discussions being had and y’all’s pov.
I like how rather than having a rebuttal for some of the common critiques of your takes in your comment section (such as how the apocalyptic time crunch combined with the overwhelming lack of information contributed to the failure of Commander Erwin's otherwise pretty solid plan, or how you guys are simply being impatient with how new information is handed to you as the plot goes on), you just rant about the few weirdos and then deflect everyone else by just being patronizing. But whatever helps your fragile ego I guess.
nerdy wants erwin to plan it better while in fact he did plan it better than previous commanders and better doesnt necessarily means perfect (show doesnt make sense if his plan prefect with little to no information). He did messed up and throw lives but he's not enjoying it. and it didnt for nothing it bring hope to humanity and the most important is: UNDER HIS COMMAND THEY HAD A HUGE IMPROVEMENT AND INFORMATION PROGRESS. he's absolutely succesful (even if you think he's a dick)
Spoiler will they? Erwin makes his choices because he desperately wants to find out what's in the basement, no matter the cost. He even says that this is more important to him than humanity's victory. How will that positively change Nerdy's opinion?
To be honest, I don't know why you guys don't like Erwin. I don't know if you missed it or don't remember, but it was explained in episode 2 of season 1. The government inside the wall sends about 500,000 people, 20% of the population, into Titan territory to die in vain in what they call "Operation Retrieval". Is this a foolish decision? Should Wangfu be disqualified? In the 13th episode of Season 1, the operation to retake the Trost District under the order of the Pyxis Command resulted in 207 dead and 893 wounded. Is Commander Pyxis incompetent and should he lose his job for causing such high casualties? Erwin gave up the lives of 100 of his colleagues who were in the area of operation for the operation to capture the female-form. At first glance, this may seem like a foolish act. However, the information he gained from it ensured that he captured Annie this time. I don't understand why you people hate Erwin. If the spy is not caught at this point, the human race will perish. When Lohse's wall is breached, the monarchy will send more than half of humanity into Titan territory. Most of you who have seen this far understand that. That is why we support Erwin's decision. We recommend that you rewatch season 1 again before going to season 2, as there seems to be a lot of missed setups and character dialogue that you missed. Also, please read the plot descriptions between the first and second halves carefully before going back.
Some say the population within the walls is 1.2 million, others 3 million. In the cartoon, the number is 3 million. The King's government offered about 500,000 people to the Titans as a way to reduce the number of mouths to feed the food shortage within the Wall. In episode 3 of season 1, Armin makes this clear. I felt threatened by the existence of such a royal government." It is because of this premise that we support Erwin's decision. The next time the wall is breached, more than 2 million of the remaining 2.5 million people will have to be sacrificed. And these are mostly people who work in the primary industries. In other words, if most of the people who produce food are eliminated, the human race will effectively be exterminated. First of all, you must understand this correctly.
If you go into season 2 without understanding this story, you will not be able to keep up with the story and will just be swearing again in a misguided way. If you didn't understand season 1, then please understand it and move on. It's a complex story and many people don't understand it after just one viewing. I have watched the entire season over 100 times. Some people read the plot description between the first half and the second half of the story, some don't, but in your case, you should read it. Please calm down a little and think about it before proceeding.
I came into this video hoping that we can have fun with this series again and it was. Until the entire second half where nerdy just became a condescending douche for the most part. You did too much friendly fire on your comments mate, a lot of us loved discussing it in the comment section. I have personally read some of the comments you cited and most of them are valid points and not hateful comments, we also agree on banning people who spoil or personally attack you. We hate the toxic side of the fandom just as much as you do , but your comments took it too far this time. Being told to grow up as an adult with 2 kids when i was just saying that they might enjoy the series a bit more knowing that aot is a holistic story just sucks. Even with the muddy feeling I will still continue to watch hoping that you can be more open minded with things and enjoy a series that me and many other love.
You should react to Gigguk's other AoT video 'Attack on Titan is Incredible Now' when you finish season 3. He basically goes over the show's history and how both the story and the audiences perception of it has changed over time while being really funny.
We were discussing the same thing with a friend who read the manga and he said that the story is mean to be like this because the Autor start to create it backwards, he had clear what was going to happen and plan the story from 4 to 1, so it is not lineal like lord of the rings or other animes, it is circular, everything is connected and when the information is finally giving is mind-blowing. Also, it gives the space to speculate and create theories and gamble about what is going to happen, more than expecting things to happen like people are used to see, with the approval o disapproval from a specific public or criticism, as Nerd mentioned, like other shows. For example, the rings of power show was created based on a book with a huge expectation because of how the lord of the ring worked. Anime is different, if a manga got really good sales and has a really good acceptance, the full story will be adapted into an anime. I just think that that point has to be in consideration when Nerd said that he cannot understand how people defend so fiercely the show if it has some slow points in the first season with moment, character decisions or gaps in the situations, I mean I get it, it is a point of view, but for more perspective, if the manga was popular, the anime show will be as well; it is mostly how this market works. I don't know if it is because I am more into manga/anime world than occidental industry that the slow season 1 wasn't like that bad for me. Some episodes were pointless at the beginning for me when I watched it for the first time, but not a big deal like Erwin I was naa-whatever, not a big thing. And now I have watched the show three times from season 1 to 4, I had to come back and rewatch those episodes more to see if I find more details and clues, that is like the attractive part of the show for me, for others, is the game of speculation about what it means or why the characters do this and that and what will happened. I think you need to see this differently because it is not like other shows, I really like your discussions and opinions but I feel that Nerd is holding on a detail that is not a big deal and because of that you are missing other things that really matter more than Erwin. I suggest you to watch the ovas after season 2 as well, they will be helpful.
@raylenerobin right, it is fiction. However it isn't unreasonable to make assumptions about things that exist in the real world when they also exist in fantasy. We have horses IRL so we has expectations for what they can do. If it was a Chocobo then we do not have expectations on what they can do until we see what they do in the world of Final Fantasy. Once the expectations have been made and established, any changes should be addressed directly to clarify that changes have been made and expectations should be adjusted.
@@raylenerobin The info card states their real world top speed, not a fictional one. I grew up in a place known as Cowtown, trust me when I say you're not maintaining that top speed for hours with a person on its back, that's how you break a horses leg and your neck.
While it is satire and it is obviously exaggerated for humor, I don't think that anyone could realistically say that Erwin was very successful in season 1. I will say that he is put into a near impossible situation with a possible traitor (or more for all he knows) in his ranks and a nation that is very quickly reaching extinction due to a problem that he is tasked to solve with very little time or information. I think its funny to clown on how poorly some of the situations go in this season when related to him and I do think that he isn't perfect, no one in this show is, but he does the best he can in a role that no one else is willing to take. All that being said, I do agree that the 2nd half of season one is by far the "worst" part of the show in a vacuum. I think the beautiful part of this show is that everything, even the small details, might end up being important and you get fed information and big reveals at the craziest times... answers are not just given to you up front. I saw you say in a previous episode that you will watch all the way through the show no matter what because you are not a quitter, and I am very glad about that. I personally think this is one of my favorite animes of all time due to its story and I really do believe that you will love later seasons of the show as you learn more and more. That being said, similar to how you have been, I was skeptical of the show early on, but am so glad that I stuck with it to the end. Edit: Also now that I have finished the video fully I will say that I personally love how you guys spend a lot of time breaking down your thoughts every episode, rather I agree with them or not. That is one of my favorite parts about this channel above a lot of other reactors out there. I think that people have an opinion formed on Erwin with biases from things that they might know and they are unhappy with their "favorite character" being trashed, even if objectively he doesn't do an "amazing" job in the vacuum of this season.
I would love for you two to continue reacting to this show. I don't agree with all of Nerdy's takes but I really appreciate the honesty. Sometimes reaction videos feel fake because the people in them just praise the content they're reacting to unconditionally. It's nice to see a reaction video with actual criticism on the show and it's nice to see the perspective of people who aren't too deep in the anime community. However, you two should know that anime structure their seasons differently than most western media. Some anime are structured with a clear starting point and a clear end point with a full story told in the season. Kind of like Cyberpunk 2077: Edgerunners. While some, mostly serialized manga adaptations, do not have an end point at the end of a season and is supposed to be taken in as a whole by the end. Attack on Titan is an anime like this. This will take some getting used to for those new to this format.
"It's not about a fucking thing"って? Wow... it's literally the most important plot point of the entire show. "Who is the real enemy?" Erwin designed that whole expedition to find out who had been fucking with the scouts and why they were so interested in Erin. I guess if you don't pick up on things like Armin literally explains to the viewer during that arc then you could be convince the arc was about nothing... I guess. Like... how can you be so confident when you miss so much? Another human who can be a titan is a HUUUGE deal. How can you say the female titan arc was about nothing? Your condescension is laughably unearned.
I think what most people took issue with is not that you're criticising Erwin or his plans in general, but rather that you're criticising his intellect as much as you do. Erwins plans are not perfect, he is also too reckless with peoples lives if it has a good chance at succeeding. But aside from maybe Armin(depending on who you ask)? he is the best/smartest strategist they have. :) Also, season 1 part 2 is the section of the show with the slowest pacing and generally the least interesting section of the series. So hopefully you will enjoy the rest of it. I'm sorry that people are being dicks, you're absolutely right about those comments and I hope you can escape them and enjoy and criticise the show on your own terms. :)

Looking forward to seeing Nerdy's character arc from Erwin hater to Erwin fanboy as the show progresses. If he still doesn't like him after the scene in you-know-what season, then he's beyond hope of redemption lol and this comment will have aged horribly
I'm hoping for it too honestly. People won't believe me, but I always want the best for the things we watch, and I WANT this show to get me 100% on board, just not enough to be dishonest in my reaction.
@@NerdyNightly That's fair. As long as you're not closed to changing your mind about Erwin then I see no problem with your opinion of the character going forward
A failing plan is not a sucky plan and without Erwin's plan literally nothing would have happened at all and humanity would be rotting in the walls accomplishing absolutely nothing until they inevitably all died. Not that you care. Scores die and little is accomplished vs nothing is accomplished and everyone dies. Personally I pick option one but hey, you keep steady, sure humanity would be extinct but at least it wouldn't be Erwin's fault.
One thing u guys need to remember. The show will explain everything. It just takes time the play plottwists and stuff is made. Also thr answers to some questions u have are also answers to question that havent came up. So it will be answered at the same time. Just gotta wait a little bit
If only the people coming into our lives and acting like assholes agreed with you. I'm fine with people disagreeing with us in AoT video comments sections, but a few vocal idiots are taking it too far.
@@NerdyNightly it's truly sad that your experience is being ruined by these assholes. It's probably gonna be even harder for you to enjoy the show going forward because of that. Maybe you should disengage with the comments and the community completely :(
i know they aren't reading comments, but jeez i just hope you got it all out of your system after this 😂 i'm tired of getting yelled at for comments i'm not leaving at the end of these, its such a fucking downer. since you're committed to catching up, refresh and regroup a little before next season for both yours and our sanity, because no matter how much you say you aren't angry, it's clear that you are. i'm afraid you're dooming yourself to hate-watching the rest of the show, which won't be fun for anyone. can't wait for season 2, even though i dont really think it'll change your minds that much 🫰
aot horses can reach top speeds of 80 km/h and they can run an average speed for 12 hours straight. They are made like that in the show. Fiction is not real life.
The same creator also published a video later called "Attack on Titan is incredible now" where he basically admitted being wrong in his first impression, also he didn't dislike at all the second part of the season but he did have some complaints like yours. Although, said video is full of spoilers from season 3 so better avoid it for now.
We knew you'd enjoy it :) I think the fact that this video is so loved by AoT fans shows that they (should I say we?) have a healthy sense of humor about the show, even if we disagree with some of his characterizations (e.g. Mikasa's scarf). It's SNL-level parody, so it's not taken seriously. And again, despite being disappointed in S1, Gigguk came back after watching later seasons with a video titled "Attack on Titan is incredible now" (and even later "Attack on Titan is still incredible"), so keep that in mind. There may be people trying to spoil you because YOU "hate" the show, but I'm sure there are other people doing it because THEY hate the show (or they hate the ending, which retroactively makes them hate the show I guess). It's a common thing, unfortunately. So don't take it personally. Does the AOT TH-cam fandom suck? Oh yes, absolutely. Particularly the spoilers, and the people who expect you to notice and remember every single detail after the first watch. I haven't seen the sort of comments you mention ("You have to like it", "You cannot form an opinion until..."), but I agree that those comments would suck. This is partly a long-term mystery show, so yeah, it will be a while before certain things make complete sense. But I agree with you that if you're not enjoying the show on other levels in the meantime -- or if you can't figure out the "point" of half of the season because the show isn't communicating it well enough -- then that is a valid opinion, and that's on the show. Or maybe the show is just not for you. (I mean, if you can't enjoy the tension and double-reveal of Ep 23, then I don't know what to tell you!) So, let's all be nice to each other and agree to disagree. Particularly about Erwin (I'm on Team Erwin!).
I don't think there should be any sort of filter on how you percieve characters in the show at all. Your content is refreashing because it's a critical perspective on the show. Just always remember that the AoT fanbase is very passionate abot this show. You'll see why eventually, but for now just think of AoT as a modern day 'Star Trek' in terms of the fanbase. If somebody ever said "Spock sucks" you know what the reaction is going to be lol.
15:49 Ummm... I guess that's the problem you're having. Every show doesn't need a bad guy... In fact, that's how it is in reality, there are no bad guys, there are no good guys, it's the mixture. The world isn't black and white but gray!
If you are seeing a lot of comments on your liking and disliking of your opinions, that is because you guys inherently want to stay ahead of story and wanna guess fwd and you were too quick to judge things. Also AOT is a full 4 season story, it was not like normal shows that are created for one season and based on response extended further. One non hurting spoiler for you is that next season you won't see Levi, as his ankle broke, because season 2 is immediate continuation of season 1.
No spoilers It was hard for me to get the show at first too - and now 4th AoT season is my favourite season of TV. But it needs all the emotional baggage to be collected and set up in the first seasons. Treat this all as a big prologue to the main story - Eren story. This show takes reeeeally long to uncover stuff, so if you enjoy constant mystery it's great for you. There is also a point of being on board with the main crew of the show - you know the same amount of info. But if you already wanna know more, you just can't, you need to watch, to push forward, like in an old detective story - only Holmes explains stuff, not Watson. You are the Watson here. And the lack of info even gets worse because of sequences when they do action 1st and explanation 2nd only as a flashback. What I'm telling, is that if you are curious and looking forward to every next chunk of info - your curiosity will get rewarded, they will explain everything, even if it seems nonsense atm. Whether you will like it or not - your call, but AoT is worth a full picture opinion. Worth getting through the longest fucking prologue in history.
I apologize on behalf of all the toxicity in this fandom lol. I totally understand disagreement so long as it stays civil, but people took it way too far with personal insults, spoilers, etc. Hope it doesn't ruin the experience for y'all, but you don't seem like the type of people to care what others say lmao Keep doin you, I'd take brutal honesty over sugarcoated or performative lies any day! I promise you'll love season 2, the show is an uphill climb from this point onwards. S1's second half is the lowest point for sure

No matter what opinion on Attack On Titan You may have, I will keep watching to see how it changes, if at all. 😂Still if You want something more I can suggest watching Attack On Titan OVA Ilse's Notebook and Attack On Titan OVA No Regrets Part 1&2 before Season 2.😉
I have no problem with your criticism. But now It's kinda sad hearing you playing so defensive and disregarding the responses as "uninformed". You are also falling in a really bad place of passive-aggressive behavior. I watched season 1 almost when it was released and yeah it had a lot of mysteries with no answers, It was something to be worried about, but it had also interesting arcs beyond the mysteries, that I liked, it wasn't the best thing I saw but the premise was interesting and yeah "mysteries" that hopefully would be answered (there are shows that failed with this really important part, it's not the case with this one. I guess that's why so many say that you'll get answers. But it's not true that this show it's not cohesive or a doesn't have good arcs). I waited a lot for season 2, and so on. It's ok if you don't like something, it doesn't have to be homework, you create content to have reactions, ban the ones that ruin your enjoyment, but hate watching something doesn't make sense either. I get that you are just disappointed and in it seems that you have faith that it would get better, thats great, but really just don't dismiss people defending the show from some points that you just don't get not for being "qualified" or something, maybe you don't like the disposable logic that an army could have (the show repeats that it's awful for a reason BTW) but it doesn't make it unrealistic, it's exaggerated as a lot of things but there are is a lot of more fantasy stuff in it that many people can go with because of a really good worldbuilding. Whatever, hope it get's better for you, and also I hope you can take criticism (for your logic, we are having a discussion about fictional stuff) better.
I want to be clear that I don’t find all of the criticism uninformed. Just some of the dumber shit that people have been spamming us with. I find the people on the Attack On Titan videos mostly understandable, it’s the ones posting about AoT on other stuff that isn’t related just to harass us about it that haves the worst takes, and are being the most difficult about it
@@NerdyNightly Yeah, well it's youtube comment section. We can all hope for a better community... but yeah, at least this is not twitter. For some reason they are not as aggressive now, but I have no numbers to back it up, maybe statistics can prove that the ratio of assholes is the same.
you saying "it gets better at season X" reminded me of people saying to keep watching Breaking Bad becaue "it ges good at season 4", that's... a lot for a show to get good, so I get your point.
A lot of defense for AoT Season 1 comes from hindsight after all the reveals in the late seasons, giving a renewed perspective of season 1's events. I'd say AoT only gained its "so good I have to defend it on the internet" status at the end of season 3 and season 4. For first time viewers, who wasn't that jazzed by the second half of season 1, expect a rather mediocre and confusing season 2.
really? for me season 2 was a MASSIVE improvement over season 1 (which I had already liked). imo AOT generally gets better and better as it goes along!
@@tx6723 I watched all of AoT weekly upon release. I liked all of it too. But I also understand some of the criticisms too and where they're coming from.
Season 3 is the best season. Season 2 is a slow, confusing burn that raises a lot of questions, and Season 3 is the payoff. Trust me, Season 3 is worth watching the series for.
lil spoiler Erwin is willing to make difficult and ruthless decision. and he believes sacrificing and taking risks is the only way to learn more. and that is his goal. to learn more and to see if his and his father theory was correct.
are you guys thinking of continuing? I think hindsight is 20/20 so a lot of people in the comments might seem preach-y. I don't really like Erwin either. However... in general, people come on youtube to take a break, and usually they want these breaks to be pleasant. When I watch this series I get the same feeling as when I'm stuck babysitting a pre-teen, so it's not very pleasant. I think this is more the case of a lack of filter (saying what you think as soon as you think it) - it is a reaction channel after all, but effectiveness varies on fandom and context. You should try doing a few episodes where you don't voice 30% of the stuff you're thinking, especially if what you have to say is brief enough that you don't have to pause the video. This is more towards the guy, because he tends to lead most conversations.
Mark. My. Words...

It really should have been exposition and not tiny text that is impossible to read in 6 seconds.
If you have a new unknown technology that selectively heats things, you don't need to explain how it works to suspend disbelief in the same way. damn hahahha
@@NerdyNightly yeah gogigk definitely doesn't agree with your takes
nah, I like erwin but this argument doesn't make sense
The grouping of views of an entire comment section to being bumbling idiots, which a lot of comments I’ve seen have been, into one large straw man of points no one is making is what I believe is the issue and the point of pushback
I am planning on continuing watching the reaction series and it sucks that other people try to get their kicks in by spoiling but please, if nothing else, just represent our arguments correctly
Can't wait for Nerdy to turn this funny video into an Erwin hating video ha. ha. ha
That is going to be their downfall.
i actually didn’t know that people hated erwin until i saw this vid
It's a mystery show, that's what makes it special, so u have to be patient with it cuz that's what you signed for. Just enjoy the show and try to figure out the puzzle pieces cuz if u get yourself into such feud for a long time, then u'll miss a lot.
to explain the survey corps / recon corps / scouting regiment / scouting legion joke:
the english translation of the name of that military branch is different on basically every single streaming service out there. if you read the manga online it also has different translations depending on what website you read it on. this used to be a bit of a meme back in the day when no one really knew how to call the survey corps.
Oh that explains why I really remember it being scouting legion, and not survey corp. I also remember Levi being called Revaille in the manga. 🤣
But he doesnt know so...
I love how Nerdy doesn't understand how satire works. Imagine someone felt Hannes was a dick for running away with Mikasa and Eren, and feeling validated by this video
I know right? Dude thinks funny satire is legitimate criticism of the show
Only nerdy would take a satire about erwin seriously lol
Not me lipsyncing to all of the words 💀
This proves Nerdy is 100% unfit to make decisions in anything worthwhile, don't even know what's comedy and what's criticism.
Criticizing Erwin is genuinely mind-blowing to me
Criticizing him is fine, but their criticism being "why didn't he just know more or run away" is the baffling part. The first episode shows the previous commander literally having a mental breakdown due to the stress of carrying all of his men's deaths and injuries without getting any closer to knowing a single thing about the titans... Erwin may not be taking flawless victories, but he's sure as hell making more progress than any of the commanders before him.
@@ayotrippin "Criticism him is fine but not their criticism" and then you mischaracterize our criticism. Fine work done there.
They are because his actions make more sense and will actually save more people than the suggestions you are making
they dont read yt comments as they said in the video. if you want to reach them you have to post this in the discord.
@@raylenerobin for that i would need to join their Patreon and then get the link from there. Normally i wouldn't mind but seriously it is off putting the way Nerdy has reacted till now.
Minor Spoiler
Only 1 of the titans we've seen have a short time limit.
Didn't expect a Garnt crossover on this channel lmao
edit: Oh and you are now legally obliged to watch his "Why I Actually Preferred Attack On Titan S2 Over S1" when you are done with S2, and "Attack on Titan is Incredible Now." after S3
And with that, I am now done watching your reactions to AoT. This is just gross.
I disagree with the idea that a show must make sense very soon, since that is part the mystery element to see the forshadowing and clues which will make you make the right conclusion before the reveal.

@Vaqu it's also in a down time after people were split. You gotta look objectively, not as a super fan.
Please keep watching and critiquing and ignore the toxic in the fan base, but also, this story won't be told the way you might usually expect a story to be told so try to roll with it ✌️
Perfectly explained.
Gigguk aka Garnt has been doing anime videos on youtube for more than a decade. He is very entertaining as well as informative about upcoming stuff.
The fact that Nerdy thinks Mikasa is the greatest character tells me everything I need to know about his opinion on the show LMAO
It hurts cuz I also value her highly as a character, granted not quite S tier but still, and yet he has all his other comments on the show that makes me think he's watching the show with rapid onset amnesia and a proportional attention span, it makes it harder to defend Mikasa as a character without just lookin like a simp.
Simp detected.
Mmm Idk maybe is just cuz is the season 1 but while the story progresses he realized her development is stuck
@@gj810 I really wanted the other ship.
Enjoying the reactions! Keep it up! :D
Once you get to see Erwin's backstory you will even feel bad for hating on him
Spoiler
will they? Erwin makes his choices because he desperately wants to find out what's in the basement, no matter the cost. He even says that this is more important to him than humanity's victory. How will that positively change Nerdy's opinion?
Bold of you to think he will register half of that. Honestly she'd have more fun watching this without him.
I felt threatened by the existence of such a royal government."
It is because of this premise that we support Erwin's decision.
"Horses are not cars" 👍
Concise and to the point hahaha 😄
not in real world sure. but in aot they run faster, and they could run for 12 hours. Aot is not real world like any other fiction.

You should also react to the No-Regrets ova's as well since it's pretty important to Levi's character. Anyways, great reaction.
We're going to! and the other one. "Lost Girl" I think?

"Just another day at the survey core!" cue Seinfeld theme.
"It's not about a fucking thing"って? Wow... it's literally the most important plot point of the entire show. "Who is the real enemy?"
Erwin designed that whole expedition to find out who had been fucking with the scouts and why they were so interested in Erin.
Also, season 1 part 2 is the section of the show with the slowest pacing and generally the least interesting section of the series. So hopefully you will enjoy the rest of it.

(I mean, if you can't enjoy the tension and double-reveal of Ep 23, then I don't know what to tell you!)
So, let's all be nice to each other and agree to disagree. Particularly about Erwin (I'm on Team Erwin!).
My favourite line is It's all part of Erwin's failsafe plan

No spoilers
It was hard for me to get the show at first too - and now 4th AoT season is my favourite season of TV.
Hope it doesn't ruin the experience for y'all, but you don't seem like the type of people to care what others say lmao

I find the people on the Attack On Titan videos mostly understandable, it’s the ones posting about AoT on other stuff that isn’t related just to harass us about it that haves the worst takes, and are being the most difficult about it

you saying "it gets better at season X" reminded me of people saying to keep watching Breaking Bad becaue "it ges good at season 4", that's... a lot for a show to get good, so I get your point.
The thing with AOT is that first few seasons aren't bad. They are actually brilliant, but mostly in retrospective.
I still wouldn’t be reading comments, or like watching videos about it. It’s a huge show. I had a lot spoiled for me before I caught up
Erwin is in fact one of the best characters in this show.... Season 1 part 2 is the weakest part of this show, but it is very important to the story.
That part is my favorite of season 1
Ha ha 😂 my soldiers scream🗿
A lot of defense for AoT Season 1 comes from hindsight after all the reveals in the late seasons, giving a renewed perspective of season 1's events. I'd say AoT only gained its "so good I have to defend it on the internet" status at the end of season 3 and season 4. For first time viewers, who wasn't that jazzed by the second half of season 1, expect a rather mediocre and confusing season 2.
really? for me season 2 was a MASSIVE improvement over season 1 (which I had already liked). imo AOT generally gets better and better as it goes along!

Erwin is willing to make difficult and ruthless decision. and he believes sacrificing and taking risks is the only way to learn more. and that is his goal. to learn more and to see if his and his father theory was correct.

are you guys thinking of continuing?
Commenting for the algo, screw fascism and I'm glad you're watching and enjoying OP so far.
