Good lathe, had one for 2 years, plenty of capacity, i found the best way protection lubricant is WD40 Specialist Silicone lubricant or Lanox. Way oil wasn't so good. Otherwise turns true, runs well. The saftey guard can be removed and used without it. Lead screw appears imperial, which isn't much of an issue just need to mindful if you need to chase threads. Great machine.

Note the chuck holding system not only has the three chuck key release screws holding the chuck but also needs the hex head locking screws are needed to be release before undoing the chuck . these need to be tightened after installing teh chuck/securing bolts.

Also don't forget that they're shipped from the factory dry, youll need to put oil in the 3 gearboxes, at 13:01 we can see the sight glass for the threading gearbox has no oil in it. there is also one for the spindle head and the last one is on the saddle. :)

Hi Henry, if you watch "CUTTING EDGE ENGINEERING" (for example) you'll see that even lathes that are 5m between centres (and on other channels) over 5m are 'belt-driven'. More engineering machines are driven this way than gear/direct drive. Keep in mind that it's better to have a 'belt-drive' failure than a 'gear/direct-drive' failure. I've been around these things for about 65 years, so mate, believe me, shit does happen! When a 'belt-drive' fails you replace said belt/s. When a 'gear/direct-drive' fails you usually replace the whole bloody machine! (Unless you're lucky). I hope you get your lathe mate and as I always drum into people Henry, "NO GLOVES; NO RINGS; NO LONG SLEEVES; NO WRIST WATCHES, NO BRACELETS; NO NECKLACES; NO 'LOOSE' LONG HAIR and NEVER REACH ACCROSS OR OVER YOUR MACHINE UNTIL IT STOPS!!! Happy and safe machining for many years Henry.

So I have been to H&F here in WA, but still haven’t bought my lathe yet.
Getting stock out of China seems to be a big problem at the moment making choice limited to whatever is left in stock.
No idea when new stocks will arrive.
Any chance you could do a review on the AL356V please?
That seems to be the one I want.
But even when I visited, I never got to see or hear it run. At least on a video like this I can get an idea how loud it might be.
If the Designation CL stands for “Centre Lathe” what does the AL of AL 356V stand for please?
The D stands for Deluxe & the V stands for Variable speed , but your guy at H&F couldn’t tell me what the AL stood for?
Why I’m interested in a review with the variable speed lathe, is what effect does that adjustability have on selecting speeds and gears when thread cutting etc.
You sell nice equipment, but I think you just assume everyone knows about how such stuff works.
I’ve had over $10k tucked away in the safe for over 3 months now earmarked for my new lathe but even after visiting in person, I didn’t end up coming away having bought my new lathe.
Getting the right answers, to questions, non availability of stock with the Covid hard border shut downs & no ships out of China & now some sort of trade war blossoming with China, it seems like getting warranty parts etc out of China - ie ongoing support in future, is all pretty much “guesswork” - it doesn’t really inspire a $10k purchase in the hope things get better in the future.
I’d actually prefer a Taiwanese built lathe if I’m honest.
Stories of the Chinese ones having the gear box and saddle castings all still full of casting sand mixed with the lubricating oil doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in the Chinese product is all.
The more I try and get info about buying a lathe, the less impressed I have become with H&F if I am to be honest.

@@Machineryhouse1930 So no video on the AL 356 V I guess?
And you wonder why H&F are getting a shockingly bad reputation. 🙄

Time to find another machinery supplier by the looks. 👎

    • @lathejack
      @lathejack 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I bought a new Chinese made Warco 13x30 geared head lathe in 2004 here in the UK, I would also have prefered a Taiwanese made lathe but the equivalent was twice the price even years before I bought my Chinese version.
And yes, the stories are true, my new Chinese lathe had large amounts of casting sand as well as metal swarf left in the apron and particularly in the headstock, but to a lesser extent in the screwcutting gearbox. The headstock internals were also rusty, including all bearings. I had two of these Warco 13x30 lathes and they both had these faults, but the first one I was given was much worse than the second, and even the second was really bad.
But the Chinese lathes of this type and price range are inconsistent, some examples are perfectly alright, some are not too bad and some are just dreadful, you just don't know what you are going to get until it turns up, whatever the claims of quality made by the supplier. This is not directed at H&F in any way, just my experiences with some lathes and other machinery made in China that use an enclosed oil filled gearbox.
You must not simply run these machines "straight out of the box" like some owners proudly do, without at least first removing the headstock cover and taking a look at the state of the internal condition. This could prevent what may be very well made components from being prematurely damaged and ruined by any rubbish that might have been left inside by the manufacturer and the factory that sometimes carelessly and crudely assembles them.
I still have my Chinese 1330 lathe, with all the casting sand, swarf and rust removed and all headstock bearings replaced right from the start, as well as many other faults corrected. It performs very well but would not have lasted much more than a year with regular use if it had been left in the state it was supplied in.

    • @ianmoone2359
      @ianmoone2359 ปีที่แล้ว

Strangely enough, still no explanation of what AL stands for in the AL356V designation?
Also no H&F video of the AL356V lathe in operation, similar to this one.
As luck would have it, since my comments 2 years ago about the AL356 etc, someone I know had to return their AL346V to H&F under warranty because it couldn’t meet the published specs by the manufacturer.
The owner replaced it with an AL356V but bought it from Fiora Machinery because H&F in WA were being d!cks to deal with over the return under warranty. 🙄
So luckily I’ve been able to go around and watch the lathe in operation.
It’s quiet and turns really accurate results. So I’m reasonably impressed with it so far from the little that I have seen.
I’ve been advised that I think the AL356V is a Chinese made lathe rather than Taiwanese, so not quite as good quality.
It’s been suggested to me that if I wanted a Taiwanese built “tool room quality” lathe, that I might be better served with either a AL1000D - 3 phase, or maybe a AL960B
I’ve dealt in the past with H $ F and had good service etc, but also with Fiora and equally had good service from them but sadly Fiora is since closed down - so it’s back to dealing with H & F as my only “option”.
Which is why it would be good if they would actually keep making these videos on each of the lathes that they import & sell.
Maybe Mark here is no longer working with H & F or something, I don’t know, but the videos seem to have stopped being produced.
A lot of products seem to be “out of stock” at the moment, so lead time from ordering might be a bit of an issue perhaps.

Would the AL 346V be a good first lathe?
I half own an old AL280p (combined lathe & mill) with a relative but I’ve never got to use it, so figure I’ll just buy separate larger machines for myself.
Which milling machine would go best with the AL 346 V please?
Is there anywhere in Perth WA I can get lessons to learn how to use it?
Watching a zillion videos is no substitute for doing it hands on with someone watching over & guiding you until you become familiar with it.
I’ve wood turned before but metal machining is a new hobby.
My biggest fear is crashing the compound into the chuck.
Is there a reason there’s not an adjustable carriage travel stop that automatically stops the travel a split second before a crash?
For new chums, it would be nice to know you can’t crash it if you set up an auto stop.
I figure if cars can now brake before hitting the car in front a metal Center lathe ought to be able to do the same.

Could you give details about the coolant system please? Capacity?, Flow rate, best cutting fluid? (Chlor Paraffin?) & whether you sell same?
    Pretty damn good review.
Could you explain please how you zero the DRO? Do you move the cutter in until it’s just touching the work piece & hit zero on the X axis, and move the saddle along until the cutter is just touching the workpiece & zero the Y axis?
Then work on dimensions from those X & Y co ordinates?
If I wanted to buy my first Lathe & have all the features of this Lathe plus VFD, would my best choice be the AL 346 V or the AL 356V? I have 240 V single phase or 415 x3 phase power available to me.

I’ve been to H&F here in Perth a couple of times now & left “underwhelmed” on both occasions unfortunately.
What’s the point if you don’t have the machine I’m interested in buying “in stock”?
Even the machines on the floor aren’t able to be powered up to hear them running.
I see vids where some premium brands start up and are really quiet, yet all the Chinese H & Fs are noisy as anything.
Noise is an issue for me, I’m not parting with $10k for something I can’t see & hear running!
A simple solution would be for you to film a similar video to this one with the AL 356V please?
I’ve asked now a few times over more than a year and zero response.
Do you not want to promote & sell the AL356 V lathes? Is there something inherently wrong with them where you don’t want to promote them?
I’ve found a guy locally has a AL346V that he bought from you guys whose agreed to let me go around and run my eyes (& ears) over it, so see if I think it’s slightly bigger brother would be the lathe for me, or not, but really I shouldn’t have to & neither should he - that is after all what H & F should be doing, it is your job after all, to promote your products.
Continually avoiding answering questions and sending me to see the staff at my local store isn’t achieving the results I’m seeking.
Maybe you guys should just do your damned jobs and get the videos out there to help sell your lathes?
I’m pretty much beyond p!ssed off by now to be honest - because if after sales service as as abysmal as before sales service, I’m not sure H & F is a company I want to be beholden to AFTER I’ve parted with my cash.

how about you guys inform the factory that they are machining the tailstocks backwards?
if i had looked at that when i bought it, i would have demanded a replacement that has some overhang where its needed so you can actually turn between centers. or gotten a different model. the 346 has a "standard" tailstock with the overhang facing in the direction its required... maybe theyll fit? but if i head to the showroom, do you reckon theyll even let me try? nope.
even the line drawing in the parts diagram shows it oriented the correct, standard way, rather than being backwards with a flush front so it has no overhang and always gets in the way.
but then again, H&F has a reputation for excellent customer service, so i dont expect anything to change anytime soon. how long have they been making and selling this model with its backwards machined tailstock? bit late now, huh?
i definitely wouldnt expect them to say... supply a correctly machined tailstock that can actually be used, to all customers that have purchased one of these, if they wanted one. much the same reason im making that new shaft inside the hm46, that when i showed up to the northmead showroom with the shaft with manufacturing defect, the thing has a crack running down the length of it, obviously from the factory as its been ground AFTERWARDS, but "brian", or maybe it was "bruce", simply looked at me and stated "what do you expect us to do about it?"
you are expected to REPLACE DEFECTIVE TIMES AS PER AUSTRALIAN CONSUMER LAWS, thats what i expect you to do about it. i seriously contemplate going back, recording the conversation and approaching the ombudsman over this. i can handle a bandsaw blade breaking, thats normal. but a critical internal part of a machine, that it RELIES upon, and is DEFECTIVE... havent been back to H&F since then, and i wont be returning anytime soon. your impeccable record of customer service has lost me. and well, i dont seem to be the only person with my experience, from what i hear in the mens sheds, in lunch rooms, down at hornsby model engineers shop... i am yet to meet ANYONE with a positive thing to say about H&F and their customer support.
    anyway.
every other lathe in your line has it done properly from what i see. just the 336 stands apart with this nonsensical tailstock design.
surprised the place is even in business. maybe they have a better rep in other cities, but northmead has a long upheld tradition of employing arseholes that have absolutely no interest in assisting anyone, whether it be advice, help, or simply honouring australian consumer laws regarding faulty products and manufacturing defects.

two options... hack it up and turcite the base back to alignment, or hack it up and make it into a slotter/lever type. not a fan of hand wheels on deep holes. got enough meat for some slideways if i slice about midway through the spindle bore.. base needs skimming anyway so it actually contacts the bed properly. i think they machined it with an oxy torch, by the look of it. so it will all shift down a bit and give me some room up top.

Most of the milling machines have a drill depth stop and it is a really useful thing to have and I wish they would add it to the lathes. It would make them a "manual cnc machine" since you couldn´t miss your mark.

It has every thing the little mini lathes don't have. I'm in love. How much? $ 5225.00 on website as of Oct 2018. Finance available. Unfortunately I still can't afford one!

I own one of these and want to cut a19 TPI imperial thread There are four columns for the indicator "C3" How do I know which column I'm currently using?

    • @Machineryhouse1930
      @Machineryhouse1930  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Firstly you need to have the gearing set up as per left table that the 19tpi falls within, (48,127, Z=(38) which is shown directly under C3. secondly the left gearbox dials are to be put into 'C3' and the other dials 'MI'. You look vertical from the thread size you are doing to get Z gear and 2 off the dials for gearbox, then look across left from th 19tpi to get letter & no. for the other 2 dials of the gearbox. going another step further the indicator table for 19tpi located on thread chasing dial right of the saddle shows you to use 16 gear in bottom, which is most likely already set up in it, (check) and also shows you you can only engage/disengage the lever on the number 8 mark seen on top of thread chasing dial rotating when machine is running. hope this helps, if you require more details we offer phone assistance as well, please contact your nearest Hare & Forbes office.

Thank you for clearing that up.

    • @moltenaluminium
      @moltenaluminium 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It turns out my machine was mislabeled. My left gear table was not marked as 48,127,Z. It is labeled 48,127,24 and vise versa. So I was a bit confused.

By the language this guy is using he must be a salesman and not a machinist. As a machinist he is painful to listen to. It’s like he is selling to someone who has never touched a lathe. Like someone wanting to buy a table saw at Home Depot and is thinking about buying it to do home Reno’s 🤣
