*CHRISTOCENTRIC MEAL* *DR ABEL DAMINA* *SUNDAY APRIL 10, 2022* *GIFTS IN THE SPIRIT* We have since seen that the indwelling of the spirit happens at the instant that a man is born again. We have also looked at certain concepts that describe activities that are a consequence of this such as receiving the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost coming upon, being baptized with the Holy Ghost which all imply supernatural utterances. Also, we identified how that being filled with the spirit has to do with speaking and that it can happen over and over again. Now, the things of the spirit, particularly the gifts in the spirit have their detailed explanations in the epistles. The book of Acts presented a historical account of the church in its early stages and thus should not be the basis upon which doctrine is built. Let’s observe from the epistles how the gifts in the spirit were taught. 1st Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. Vs 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. Vs 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. Vs 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. Vs 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; Vs 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; Vs 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: In discussing things of and that pertain to the spirit, Paul in verse 4 refers to: -diversities of gifts -differences of administrations -diversities of operations Thus he pointed to three different concepts (gifts, ministries and operations) all of which he referred to as “gifts.” Observe that he explains in verse 7 that the manifestation of the spirit has been given to every man. This is explained in the receiving of the spirit at the new birth. Observe that this relates to every man (every believer). From verse 8, Paul mentions what we can refer to as the “gifts” in the spirit, 9 of them. The word “gifts” used here refers to endowments, what is part of the person being described. With close observation, these gifs can be classified as: 1) UTTERANCE gifts (the gifts that SAY something). These include: A. tongues, B. interpretation of tongues C. prophecy (tongues and the interpretation of tongues) 2) The REVELATION gifts (the gifts that REVEAL facts) These include: D. Word of wisdom (a fragment of information of things in the future) E. Word of knowledge (a fragment of information of things in the past or present) F. Discerning of spirits (to decipher or be aware of spirit beings and their activities) 3) The POWER gifts (the gifts that do something) These include: G. The gift of faith H. Gifts of healing I. working of miracles Hence, all these are the gifts in the spirit. The believer has all these gifts in the spirit by the virtue of the manifestation of the spirit given to him. Thus, the believer ought to be well aware of these abilities and much more desire to function in the gifts in the spirit. 1st Corinthians 12:31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. 1st Corinthians 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. 1st Corinthians 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church. Paul’s exhaustive explanation in 1st Corinthians 14 on the utterance gifts explain how that the believer ought not only endeavour to edify himself in tongues in corporate gatherings, but also seek to excel to edify others and this is via the interpretation of tongues in which we have prophecy. CONFESSION: “The spirit lives in me, I have received the manifestation of the spirit. Therefore, I have all the gifts in the spirit, all nine of them, and I can walk in all the 9 gifts in the spirit”
