I'm a Dane that was born and raised on a small island in the Baltic Sea. Night walks alone in the forest in winter. Following animal tracks and ABSOLUTE silence were truly magical. The snow dampened all sounds and you felt like you were cut off from everything else in the world. Wardruna has truly touched me for years. Few bands speak to the "Scandinavian melancholy" that I carry inside of me. But they do. Happy you got to experience this song. It is truly a masterpiece. And the Wardruna band, Kvitrafn and Aurora are artists in every sense of the word.

I am not a Dane, neither I am Nordic, but I lived in Norway and experienced a bit of this... The lone walks on forest, at winter time. The absolute slience, nothing moved, no sound was made (except for my boots pressing the snow), it was if the world suddenly just stopped, as if time itself was stopped, and the only thing still moving/living was me. And the only other signs of life were indeed the animal tracks.
Never have I felt freer than those lone nights at one of the many Bergen's forests and mountains.
May Freyja and Odin keep me in their good graces. May Tyr never get upset with me, because I do my absolute best to be honest, true and straight as an arrow.
I am American but my great grandfather came here in the late 1800s from Denmark. My life goal is too travel back to our place of origin and experience the wonderful land it is. May the gods guide you my friend. I hope your hearth is always warm.

If you decide to go down the Aurora rabbit hole I highly recommend Aurora - Murder Song The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. I think about that performance almost daily and it's another haunting and beautiful performance of hers.

This song is amazing. The meaning is that Odin has taught him the songs to guide people to the afterlife, but that when he is gone no one will be left to sing to him. So it's both about physical death, but also the death of the traditional Norse culture as well.

This artist was a huge part in the show Vikings on history channel. He created most of the original music, and this song in particular was used several times in pivotal scenes. His music in general is so soothing. I get chronic migraines and listening to it on low just helps me relax just enough to get through them til the meds kick in.

Watched Wardruna live tonight in Vancouver. Utterly astounding. They stressed the importance of Helvegen as song for the dead. Powerful stuff.

Aurora is not only a phenomenal artist, but an amazing human being as well. Saw her live earlier this year, and the whole show brought tears to my eyes. I hope you continue on down the Aurora rabbit hole; it will be well worth your time.

Weird everyone talks so much about Aurora but when Einar comes in is when you get the goosebumps in this song, I think he makes it what it is, his passion when he sings is awesome

Apparently TH-cam didn't notify me this video dropped so I'm over a week late to my nerd essay, so that sucks. Great reaction! I love to see you appreciate all kinds of music! Now I'm going to explode with context. This song, of course, is about death and passing on, but more specifically it's about the old tradition in Scandinavia of families gathering and singing to their family on their death bed to ease their passing. More so, it's about the loss of that tradition, "Who will sing me, into the death-sleep sling me, when I walk the path to Hel, and the tracks I tread are cold, so cold?" Who will sing to us when we die? The tradition itself is mostly gone, but even further, the songs themselves are lost, and with them the vast majority of Scandinavian history (which was almost entirely an oral history) is lost as well. It's as if we promised to remember our ancestors, and we let them be forgotten.
For further context, Hel in Norse mythology isn't a place of torture for sinners, rather it's simply the afterlife people go to where they simply fade away and are forgotten, and almost everyone goes there, with Valhalla and Folkvangr being exceptions. Even in the afterlife, there was no immortality or eternity, even the Gods themselves would someday die. Instead of living your life to earn an eternity, the Norse philosophy centered more around living your life in defiance of fear and apathy, knowing that while everyone will someday die, the best we can do is make our lives worth living, and by extension worth remembering, to which our memory would be passed on in our tales through family, and if it was worthy enough, society itself, for ages to come. This is a big reason that poetry was so important to the culture. The end quote comes from the Havamal, a collection of poems thousands of years old that was passed down orally and eventually written down in the 13th century, with the quote coming from the perspective of Odin himself, it's pretty much translated to; "Cattle die, friends and family die, so too must you die, but one thing that never dies is (the impact of a life well lived)".
In making this song, Wardruna has produced something between a love letter to those who pathed the way for us to be here today, and a mission statement to honor and rediscover the wisdom and lessons we've lost along the way, that we may use them to lighten our future.
As a person who's very empathic, I can't stop myself from tearing up when I hear this song, no matter how many times I hear it, it will always stir something in me.

Great reaction!😊👍 You should definetly check out more Wardruna, I recomend Kvitravn(white raven) . But I also recomend that you dip in to some of Auroras music as well. Aurora as you said is an artist on her own. She found an old electric piano in the attic when she was just a child. When she was 6 she made melodies, and when she was 9 she added lyrics.(all in secret from everybody, even her family) One of the songs she made at age 9 was on her debut album, it's called "Lucky". Her biggest song Runaway she wrote at age 11, and the music video to that song inspired Billie Eilish to pursue music, as a career and not just a hobby. I dont know if you're into Disney movies mutch, but Aurora was "the voice" calling out to Elsa in Frozen 2. Both in the song Into the unknown, and the movie.

I discovered her in Covid times and her music, her whole cheerful, honest personality is just psychologically healing.

She has been making music since she was 6 years old. That's when she played the piano for the first time. The lyrics came at 9. She writes her own songs. Important songs. She composes, produces, writes and sings. She is what one called a genius. Highly intelligent. She never wanted to be an artist, just write songs. She was discovered because a classmate posted a video of her without her knowledge. A record company approached her and her answer was no. Her mother then convinced her that she should do it. You don't keep music to yourself if you can help others with it. That convinced her.
You realy have to broaden your music horizons if Floor is the only down to earth musician you know.

I just sang this sing at a celebration of life for a dear friend. I was holding back my own tears.
This song was played at my mother in law's funeral, so not only is it moving in its own right but it also holds a very special place in my heart; bittersweet, it brings happy memories of her but it also brings back that sadness.

As far as Wardruna, I would suggest a song called "Lyfjaberg". On the Aurora side, a VERY powerful song called "The Seed", also maybe "The River".
I’ve been into Wardruna for about a year now. You’re right about it being almost meditation and centering. It’s helped me deal with some PTSD, and anxiety.

During the winter when when there is a frosty but dry morning, I sit in my back garden listening to dark folk music with headphones for about 20 to 30 mins in just a t-shirt and shorts and it just makes me feel in touch with myself and the Earth. I just love it. Oh and I'd defo recommend listening to some songs by Aurora. She is incredible.

Longtime Wardruna fan here. Einar is an incredibly talented musician and storyteller, and has such a powerful voice to match. Aurora was such a great match for his music - her voice works so well paired with his.
It's really moving to watch your reaction to the music. You clearly feel it deeply. I've heard this song many times, but watching you watch it makes it feel like the first time.
I got to see this live in October. Aurora wasn't there but holy shit the entire show was amazing. They came to the Majestic Theater in Dallas and I couldn't pass it up. Had my tickets for 3 years, kept getting called of because covid. Got a bad ass hoodie after the show as well. If you ever get the chance to see Wardruna take it, it's like a healing experience.
Great songs. Love her beginning and incredible harmonies between Aurora and Wardruna singer (also there were powerful transition between her solo beginning and when she started to sing too). Also love the ending lyrics (like sum of of the song :) ).
Aurora is a great on herself. It is my favorite artist after I "discovered" her by a chance in 1Q2021 :). She has a lot of great music (like her whole discography ;) ). Hope you will check some songs from her too. Too much great songs from her but i would recommend f.e. Lucky live from Nidarosdomen :). But generally you can not go wrong with any her songs and even covers:).
The beauty in this song. For me, at least. Is the acceptance of an impending death. Finding the peace in it. "I know my life is coming to an end. I am not scared. I am at peace with this path."

Wardruna is a truly amazing band. They did work on Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The raid music is one of the more noticeable parts you can really hear Einar's vocals in. They have so many beautiful songs. This being one of my favorites. "Solringen" and "Lyfjaberg" being others.

Aurora (the voice of the North Wind in Frozen II) became one of my favorite singers when I first heard her back in 2015 she is just so incredibly unique, you will love her work it's worth a dive into, you will not be disappointed

I got goosebumps all over. What a power this old funeral song still has. In a way, the old germanic people who sang this still live on in the power of their song. This is not just a song, its our heritage.
This is one of my favourite concert memories of all times. Experiencing Wardruna at the old fortress in Bergen was, simply put, magical.

For me by far the best Live Version of this Wardruna Song! I've seen Aurora & also Wardruna Live several Times... unfortunately I wasn't there at this Concert. I'm always amazed at how clear and strong Einar's & Aurora's singing comes across Live!

YESSSS! I adore Wardruna. The obly band where I really can get my head completely free. I really enjoy them in absolute solitude. They have an outstanding magic in their music. My recommendation for you would be their songs Raido (the build up is out of this world) and Kvitravn, a song that means pretty much for me personaly. Highly enjoyable.

Wardruna's song Lyfjaberg is one of my favorites. If you are interested in other collaborations I would highly recommend one from Wardruna's lead singer Einar Selvik and Ivar Bjørnson called "Um Heilage Fjell"
Aurora is not just a singer she is magic. Her voice takes you to a different place, This song is old Norse viking all the instuments are are from the viking era. Aurora is dressed as the white Raven, Ravens were white until they flew through the black souls of man.
