Song was written by Einor Selvik, the male singer and leader of Wardruna. Singing you into the afterlife.
    His music is amazing.

Wardruna and Heilung are among the most prominent in this genre.
Though it sounds old, it also sounds so fresh.
I just saw Wardruna was added to the Wacken-festival, so though it's not metal, it kind of have an appeal to the metal community.

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT ปีที่แล้ว +3

The fact that their male singer Einar Selvik used to be part of the black metal band Gorgoroth and plenty of other metal bands is probably helping with that. Wardruna is also one of the few non-metal bands that have an exception to be allowed on the metal-archives website as well. An other great one (imo) with an exception is the Finish Neofolk/Ambient group Nest. I actually discovered both of those bands by accident 10 to 15 years ago (maybe closer to 20 years for Nest) through that site and have loved their sound ever since.

I'm not sure if you have heard/reacted to the track "Anoana" by Heilung, but it is definitely worth checking it out. It is such a powerful song and music video. You should watch it again for yourself with CC (English Subtitles) on.
Helvegen means "road to Hel", and it is a funeral song about moving on to "Hel" the afterlife in Norse mythology (not only for the bad people like the Christian "Hell").
    Lyrics from Genius (not mine):
    Who will sing me
    Into the death-sleep sling me
When I walk the road to Hel
    And the tracks I tread
    Are cold, so cold
    I sought the songs
    I sent the songs
    When the deepest well
    Offered drops so mighty
    Of Valfather’s pledge
    I know it all, Odin
    Where you hid your eye
    Early or in fading day
Still the raven knows if I fall
When you stand by the gate of Hel
And when you must tear loose
    Follow you I shall
    Across the bridge of Gjöll
    With my song
You will be free from the bonds that bind you
You are free from the bonds that bound you
    Cattle die, kinsmen die
    You yourself will also die
But the word about you will never die
If you win a good reputation
    Cattle die, kinsmen die
    You yourself will also die
I know one thing that never dies
The reputation of those who died

Regarding jokes as a reactor, that's a minefield. It's not nessecarily that people don't understand that you make a joke, and that it is a joke. It's more about how we percieve you when you find what we feel a lot about is only worth being worthy of cheap ass jokes. It makes us feel that "you don't get it" and such. I don't think you should get any flack for it though, your channel, your take on the reaction genre, freedom of speech etc.
I saw a reaction to one of my favourite bands (Heilung), and the three reactors (men of course) didn't bother to listen, but kept making jokes about their costumes and their impression of vikings. I didn't bother sulking in their commentary field, however, I simply left, and know that their reaction channel isn't for me :)

Helvegen is the road we travel when we pass.....remember our ancestors....the song is about "singing" the departed along the journey to the Viking afterlife ( "Hel" - NOT the Christian "Hell" ) and recalling all the people and events that preceded our lives........all things must die, but our reputations live on.......I think the horn is an ancient "Lur"......Einar Selvik (the male vocalist) is indeed a member of Wardruna......

You did a great reaction then, and a great reaction now. I would even take it in another direction when it comes to the German wanna-be Northern Mythology brand. Good musician and music, but I didn't get any vibes. Because I didn't find it authentic. When it comes to Wardruna it's another story, but I don't want to compare music, lyrics, language, instruments, outfit, or brand in general. It wouldn't be fair.
At the same time, it's flattering but also respectful that such good artists try to create an identity within a more or less foreign culture. However, for me, it becomes too theatrical compared to Wardruna.
With that being said, there's a high probability that the people who lived in Norway more than a thousand years ago would have had many of the same thoughts about Wardruna.
    Cheers from Norway.

Come to Sweden, stand in our ancient forests, and you will feel the heartbeat of tens of thousand of years, of millions upon millions of lives, all the way back to when the inland ice shaped this part of the world. It is beautiful and breathtaking in a way I have felt nowhere else. Listening to music by Wardruna or Heilung comes close, but it still pales in comparison to the pulse of the forest, the wind through the pines, or the smell of dirt and moss.

The City Tønsberg (1 hour drive form Oslo) is the oldest founded Norwegian city with a lot of old viking-culture in it. A lot of nearby viking-graves and old runes you can visit. And they also make viking-ships the traditional way on the docks, with the same techniques and tools they did back then, worth a trip.

Aurora is a well of pure magnificence. I love her.
If you want some songs that I would say are part of the "Swedish soul", so to speak, I can recommend the following:
    Garmarna - "Herr Mannelig"
I think they've made better songs than this, but I love the folksongy nature of this tale about a knight falling in love with a troll woman.
Imperiet - "Briggen Blue Bird av Hull"
One of the most influential Swedish rock bands, fronted by the best male singer we have, decided to cover a song by Evert Taube, himself one of the most respected Swedish troubadours. It's a heartbreaking song about a ship trapped in a storm.
Imperiet - "Märk hur vår skugga"
Not content with just one landmark cover, they also did their own version of Carl Michael Bellman's "Märk hur vår skugga." Bellman is kind of the national poet and composer of Sweden, I'd say. The combination is magnificent.
Mando Diao - "Strövtåg i hembygden"
These guys did something similar. Instead of doing an interpretation of a Bellman song, they instead chose Gustaf Frödling's "Strövtåg i hembygden". Frödling is another revered Swedish poet and Mando Diao did a fantastic job bringing his poem to life with their music.
    Amanda Bergman - "Vintersaga"
When Volvo (yes, the car manufacturer) wanted to make an ad for the Swedish market, they used a version of "Vintersaga" sung by Amanda Bergman and my god, it's quite possibly the best car commercial in the world. It portrays so many aspects of Sweden incredibly well. It's rather important to view the commercial and not just listen to the song. They complement each other so well. You'd never know it even was an ad if not for the fact that the car that drives all across Sweden just happens to be a Volvo.

First I like to say its sad that you get negative backlash for joking about our culture in earlier videos. As a swede myself I find it hard to belive that those earlier butthurt comments came from scandinavians because laughting at our own expence is kind of our favorite sort of humor, so in general we are not very sensitive to that type of jokes.. But i guess every country has some amount of Karen quota they have to fill so maybe it was those that you angered in your earlier videos. Personally I think you can joke about anything. Glad you discovered Wardruna and Aurora. They are great and this song is beautiful. If you like traditional music from this region you should check out a band call Heilung and especially their song Krigsgaldr (the live version) i think you would enjoy it. Also a kind of forgotten band that you might enjoy is Garmarna. They were popular here in sweden in the 90s but i dont think they succeeded internationally.. But if you are into traditional music from this part of the world its a band that you might like.

There are not many kinds of music that can soothe your soul like this music can. I can very much identify with how this is the sound of our nature and culture here in the north. There are certain songs that can bring you home like no other songs can. Personally, I live close to Stockholm, but I grew up further up north in a region where you could say that the real wilderness of Sweden starts. Standing on a hill looking north, knowing that there is basically just forest for some 200 miles before you reach the next major city/town, does something to you. It's humbling, to say the least.
Speaking of humbling... The verses at the end of the video, in case you haven't heard them or seen them translated before, also does a good job with that.
    Havamal, verse 76
    ===============
    Deyr fé, deyja frændr,
    deyr sjalfr it sama,
    en orðstírr deyr aldregi,
    hveim er sér góðan getr.
    Translated:
    Cattle die,
    kindred die,
    we ourselves also die;
    but the fair fame
    never dies
of him who has earned it.
    Havamal, verse 77
    ===============
    Deyr fé
    deyja frændr
    deyr sjálfr it sama

    Translated:
    Cattle die,
    kindred die,
    we ourselves also die;
    but I know one thing
    that never dies, -
    judgement on each one dead.
I do hope you make it over here some day. You are most welcome. There is so much beauty to experience when it comes to nature, especially in the northern parts. Oh, and do keep on joking. I'm sure most of us appreciate it.

City mouse/Country mouse. Neither are wrong. Both are right. Both are valid and meaningful. And both, part of one.
We know our family history back to the early 17th century in Sweden. Yet I was born in Chicago, and grew up an absolute rocker in the 60s and 70s. Then I set out to travel, and hoped to learn the old stories. In the Americas, and Europe, and Africa, and Asia...
Have traveled and experienced and, hopefully, learned from those decades.
Nice, and I think, sincere react. These things are timeless, and Universal. Even though that sounds more than a bit corny...to some it may resonate.
    Cheers

Also, if you have not checked out Aurora by herself, I would highly recommend doing so. "Runaway" live at 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Awards Concert is a good place to start. If you want to see something more recent, "Everything Matters" with Pomme is also quite nice.

To me it's about life and death. Also about the legacy you leave behind. It always puts a tear in my eye as well. I think about family, friends and myself throughout the whole song. When we get to the poem I'm balling already! Id recommend watching watch the cover done by Kalandra. It hits me as hard as this song and very well done. "Wardruna - Helvegen (Kalandra cover)"

    Nice reaction👍
    They make their own instruments
“Helvegen” (path/road to Hel) amongst other songs from Einar Selvik (vocalist/songwriter) and Wardruna are played in the Vikings series, in one episode you can see Einar standing on land singing “Helvegen” while the vikings set off to England😊
In Norse mythology, Hel is an underground realm of the dead where it was believed that most people ended up when they died. In Norse cosmology, north is the direction towards cold and death. It is therefore understandable that Hel is cold and intractable, and that the road there leads "north and down".
Hel is also the name of the ruler of the underworld. She is motherly and terrifying, and her skin is part blue-black like that of a corpse and part human-colored. She is very greedy and does not easily give up the dead who end up with her.
Could you please react to Aurora?🙏😍
Aurora herself says a great place to start is with her breakthrough song “Runaway”.
She wrote this song when she was only 11 years old, and at that age she didn’t quite understand the meaning of the song, but as she grew older she knew that home meant home to her parents💕
    So please react to:
“Runaway” live at the Nobel peace prize concert 2015👍😍
    Love from Norway🥰

It´s an interesting take you have on the feeling when you hear the music. You´ve never been here (I´m swede) yet still you manage to express a feeling that is a hundred percent right. Not only is the music setting the forests, the darkness and the cold, but also at least I feel like I´m being thrown back in time, to my ancestors and heritage. It feels like an invitation to a ritual. I was on this concert (and I´ve seen them a few times more) and it was exactly like you said. I felt something deep inside me that´s hard to explain if you haven´t experienced it for yourself.
Dude, you should get over here and live it by yourself.
Now, react to Heilung - In Madijan. THAT is a completely unique way to get in touch with that ancient part of your soul :)

    THE PATH TO HELL
    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
When I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
    I sought the songs,
    I sent the songs.
    Then the deepest well
    Gave me tears so harsh
    From the Slain-father's1 pledge.
    I know everything, Odin,
To whom you gave your eye.
    Who shall sing me,
    Into deathsleep sling me,
Whence I on the path to Hel go,
    And this track I tread
Is cold, so cold, so cold.
Early or in the day's end,
The raven still knows if I fall.
Once you stand at the gate to Hel
And when you have to tear free,
    I shall follow you
    Over Gjallarbrú2 with my song.
You will be free from the bonds that bind you,
You are free from the bonds that bound you!
    "Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    Though one thing
    Never dies;
The fair fame one has earned.
    Cattle die,
    Friends die,
    So, too, must you die.
    I know one,
    That never dies;
    Judgement of a dead man's life."3
    1.
    "Father of the slain"
    2.
Gjallarbrú (literally "Gjöll Bridge") is a bridge spanning the river Gjöll ("Resounding") in the underworld, which must be crossed in order to reach Hel.
    3.
    Verses from Hávamál, 76-77.

You were a bit overwhelmed at the beginning of the song. That was pretty much my initial response to this video. So powerful! Oh, I wish the person had sent you the video with the song lyrics subtitled in English. It really helps to know what they are singing and gesturing so passionately about in the moment. Granted, I didn't discover the 'lyrics' one until later. Didn't detract from having my socks blown off. (And, when Einar first started singing, did I see you silently calculating how long it would take to grow your beard to braiding length?) 😁
