  • You can’t go wrong with the high quality of the 100% Swiss-made watch tools from Bergeon. I also will be comparing them to a cheap set of tools from Amazon and show you the main differences between them and why you should never go cheap on a tool kit for watch repairs/service/adjustments.

    I came to your video with high expectations of a proper comparison between cheap and expensive tools, but just found out that you just received the Bergeons and are assuming that they will be better without a single use just because they are more expensive? Ideally you should spend a few weeks using them, and then do a side by side comparison.
    Please allow me to do some constructive criticism. And BTW, I use both Bergeon and cheap tools as well. Like many real watchmakers.
    For example, I have a pair of #2 Dumont tweezers (which are better than Bergeon BTW), and will eventually magnetize, but I also use a pair of brass tweezers that will never get magnetize, but I went to the cheap option. Is very soft brass, so it can get bent and skewed, but that is why sharpening stones are one of the most important tools of a watchmaker. Not only for sharpening tweezers, but screwdriver blades as well.
    And speaking of tweezers: to change a strap? Why? How?
    Another very important tool is a demagnetizer, as all your steel tools will get magnetized. Even the Bergeon ones. You can get away with the cheap option here as well.
    The bracelet fitting block is made of plastic. Your watch bracelet is stainless steel, there is no way that it can scratch it. Go cheap.
    For spring bar tools, I have two Bergeon 6767, one in my toolkit and one at my desk. The cheap ones can do scratch your watch lugs.
    Screwdrivers: if you only want to change batteries, or even light watch repairs (emphasis on light) you can get away with cheap screwdrivers. You won't be applying too much torque anyway, and while the metal is softer, you can always resharpen the blades. BTW they are called blades, and not tips or heads.
    Loupe: I use a Horotec 5.75X which I love. Cheaper loupes are made of plastic, but on the good ones the lens is made out of glass, and is removable for cleaning and replacement. I also use other cheaper options for modifications, but a loupe is a must if you are seriously working on a movement.
    You also showed the presto tool to remove watch hands, but you didn't show any tool to put them back on. For removing hands I use Horotec levers. There are also Bergeons, and here you should go with the good quality, since you are dealing with very delicate parts, like dials and hands. You can bend and ruin them if you mistreat them, like you did on your fake Explorer II video. If that is what you are doing with your expensive tools, I guess you better stay with the cheap ones, as you literally ruined the movement. You can do that with $300 or $15 tools. At the end of the day is your money, not mine.
    There are several other tools that you never mentioned, and that's why I assume that you are not really planning to do serious watch maintenance, like finger cots, a movement holder, cushion, hand setters, a crystal press, ultrasonic cleaner, etc. There is a universe of tools which you never mentioned.
    I'm just trying to guide people from spending a lot of money when they don't need to. Cheap tools are not that bad if you know how to use them.
    Finally, I strongly suggest you check this video from Marshal from Wristwatch Revival: th-cam.com/video/4tl7xNPvmyM/w-d-xo.html

      You reccomend watching Marshall's video? Then whats the beef here? Other than throwing out differing opinions for the sake of it. Marshall also recommends going with Bergeon drivers for anyone past an experimental phase. So whats the deal with crying about them here? In fact most of the tools he recommends in that video are the higer end sort except for very few things like a barrel closer. Also, tweezers remove spring bars just fine. Its not rocket science.

    You could have left it at the plastic watch holder. For the price of the Bergeron holder, you can get the entire Amazon kit…
    Sounds like the Amazon kit is a good deal for an enthusiast (who can then upgrade as needed).

      The amazon tool kit is okay but certainly not that good and although there are so many kits, I personally have had a bad experience with one of the cheap tool kits and thats why I recommend Bergeon over them.

      Most people would only change a battery every couple of years. Nobody is going to drop fricking $300 on a battery change
      I know you said that in the beginning (repair, service etc) but $300 is practically the price or half the price of a new watch for most people

      @@chicagotypewriter2094 It depends what you want to do. I would buy cheap tools to start until you decide you want to be a watchmaker/hobbyist or not. If yes, buy the best once and you will never be disappointed. For the sake of not breaking the bank buy good tools only when you need them. It helps to be an introvert!

    Great video. Just wondering, I'm considering to buy either the Bergeon 6767-f or the Bergeon 7825 spring bar tweezers for changing the strap of my watch. There is quite a big price difference, do you think the Bergeon 6767-f does the job good enough? ps. my watch does not have the drilled lugs..

    • @LocalWatchGuy
      @LocalWatchGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are right, the Bergeon 7825 is way more expensive than the 6767-F but from what I have seen, the build quality and function is worth every penny. I would have bought it but I only found out about it after I received my order from esslinger. The 6767-f does its job very well but its not as good as the 7825 tweezers when it comes to non-drilled lugs. Thanks for watching!

    The temperature handling capability of the tweezers is pointless. And a photographer's air blower works just as well as the Bergeon one. And probably cheaper.

      @LocalWatchGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In regards to the photographers air blower, I have both and the bergeon air blower has a flat bottom base so it could stand on the table and is more convenient if someone is repairing the watch so it doesn't keep rolling away

      I take issue with your statement that the swiss tools "won't bend or break".
      At this size, any tools will bend or break if misused. In fact, for the tiniest tools, you can kill them just by knocking them off a workbench. I've killed $400 Vannas scissors like that!
      Fine tools are great, but they're a far cry from indestructible.

      I don't agree, if you own watches, there are some tools that just need to be Bergeon.
      You can start with $60 screw drivers, there blower doesn't matter. The mat doesn't matter, the case back opener can be a Boley, same with tweezers, the watch band yellow tool thingy, doesn't matter. My screwdrivers have a spinny tool and this guy picked a crap Amazon tool set. Even if you decide to go with cheaper options, source each tool one by one and know that there are other brands like Boley, Horotec, etc that have great tools that aren't Chinese crap tools

    sorry im checking out your watch tool comparison at such a later date than from when you posted it. what struck me, iis the lack of proof you have to back up what your comparing. we are not stupid, we already know that the 300 swiss made set is going to obviously be better then the 15 dollar set from amazon. that being said ill bet the house that any watch maker with the cheap amazon set will out perform you with your swiss made set , all day, any day, and every day!! you said the pry tool bent and broke up in your hands while trying to remove a bezel from the skx 007. where is that pry tool at? thats not it in your hand there is it, of course it isnt, i dont believe you broke a pry tool, wouldnt you at least have that to prove how much better the swiss made tool is? that amazon pry tool will deface any bezel from any watch a hundred times before it breaks. i think you posted this video just to set your mind at ease after spending 300 dollars on tools you could gotten on amazon for 15 dollars. look, you cant make a comparison video on one item that completely destroys a similar item because you say so.. thanks for the video

    You sound like your typical Amazon affiliate link scammer. You talk way too much and the reasons you give why the Swiss tools are better would probably upset the Swiss tool makers if they could hear you. The Swiss tweezers come with a vinyl case and magically the Swiss screwdrivers can’t scratch a watch. Take the entirety of your watch tools and cram them up your fourth point of contact.
