I've finally heard the answers I've been looking for right from the mouth of a more professional person than the usual tailors at alteration shops! Thanks a lot. For anyone who is attracted to quality bespoke tailoring, it's really worth it visiting (at least) their website - their pricing has a competitive advantage!
Hi, what do you guys charge for making functioning buttonholes on a suit? Also hand-stitching the edges of the lapel, pick-stitching? Thank you, kindly!
+Mh93Rs sorry delay in.reply.....fairly new to TH-cam posts..... Yes i think for price point they are decent well made suits. On there sale prices are very good buys :) regards
You talked about the shoulders (which is discouraged as an altercation online due to its high expense and basic rebuilding of the suit's body) but how about the chest?
How are lapels pressed? I ask because I find the crease position makes the jacket look too wide when unbuttoned. Thanks for any suggestions and a great video.
You mentioned some different fits from various retailers like Zara etc. How would you describe the fit from an old school shop like Cordings? Traditional? Generous? I'm considering purchasing maybe one of their country sport suits. Thank you.
lifenz1 hi if you mean it's too tight on the body then you can get a tailor to let it out on the side seams. Should be 1 inch to let it out. Also you can move the button over a touch to help with it if pinching on the front part. Regards
Mostly I find tapering best, but if it’s an extensive over haul with the sleeves being narrowed as well and you effectively taking the garment to pieces and starting again you can go straight up to the armhole.
Quick question: Can a tailor move the positioning of the buttons on a double-breasted overcoat? For instance, you see a lot of overcoats that are double-breasted having linear buttons but you can also have the two top buttons wider like in a typical double-breasted suit-jacket, can a tailor make this alteration ?
as an up and becoming Tailor, I was wondering if there were any specific tailor alteration knowledge you would expect a person to know if they were to be just starting up as a tailor in your business? maybe an off the peg alteration baseline?
Hi, best is to buy an old charity shop suit or cheap off the peg suit, strip it down and have a look inside at what seams can be taken in and generally have a play around it on the sewing machine. No harm done if you mess it up. Some good videos on youtube to help. Keep practicing :)
Nice video. I have a pair of size 30" suit trousers but my size is 35", I would like to know if it can be altered to make the waist wider? If not, what's the widest it can be altered to? I'd really like some professional opinion and I hope you take take a moment of your time to reply me please. Thanks.
+saar zoor hi in my opinion this is too much to shorten from sleeve head....max 1 inch I would recommend....arm pit may get tight If you did 2 or 3 inches..... best do combo of both from bottom sleeve and top sleeve points. Regards
i have ask few simstes and all have say is not worth bring in on sides , or shorten the shoulders , am tall and slim , to find jacket that will be long enough mean that the shoulder will be bit biger ,by1-3 cm or the sides ad chest will be to big , so shoud i on next jacket take the smaller and lengthy the sleeves or the bottom ,
Hi, just a quick question , I have a 100% melton wool navy issued peacoat. Its really boxy its a 44L and I buy a 44 short blazer the peacoat is 33inches long and my blazer is 29.5 inches so can I have it hemmed up to 29.5 or would that theow off the perportions
Brandon Patterson hi it really depends on how low the pockets are in ratio to the bottom really. You wouldnt want it too look altered so best leave a reasonable distance from pocket to bottom of jacket ratio. Regards
Ch Santos hi normally you can lengthen the sleeve length by just under 1 inch. the tailor may have to put some extra lining on the inside but it is do able. so expect anywhere from 0.5 to 1 inch. Regards
i would like to understand what tailoring is and ive searched for about a half hour now and havent gotten very far. Im guessing "taking it in" means like cutting it with scissors or something?
bodom11716 I know you asked this a year ago but I thought I'd answer anyways. "Taking it in" means to reduce dimension, say you bought trousers that are a 34" waist but your actual waist measures 32" then a tailor can reduce the trouser or take it in to the smaller measurement. Often this would involve scissors removing material. Conversely, "Let it out" refers to increasing dimensions. Hopefully I got that right and answered your question.
Hi my chest is a 31" but it's extremely hard to find 32R suits and I can rarely ever buy a 34R which fits me fine but most stores only go down to a 36R, is it reasonable for me to buy a 36R and to get it tailored to my size? Will it fit correctly?
Hi Micheal, realistically not its not possible to go down so much and it look decent, i would say you could get it wearable standard but not perfect. Your best bet would to get a made to measure or bespoke suit made for you, but understand this can be an expensive option. Regards
Hi option man, yes it can be done. Most the time its a case of tapering the jacket body down and then on the trousers bringing the waist in and poss tapering the leg width down as well. The odd time maybe the shoulders might need bringing in, but you should be fine with the above areas i mentioned. Regards
James Personal Tailor & Son thanks for all the helpful advice. I kept looking online and by "coincidence" I was able to find the jacket in a size 40. In the future I will keep your words of wisdom in mind just in case I cannot find the size I need and have to have alterations done. Keep up the good work and may you be blessed in all your endeavors
this is brandon patterson again, I just took a measurement , and, from the bottom if the pocket to the bottom of the hem is 9/1/4 inches but, if I had the 3.5 inch alteration it would be 5/3/4 inches so, do you think I should stick with may 2.5 inches instead of 3.5
To me, his voice in relation to his appearance does not prompt any curiosity at all! Having watched him in one or two other clips, he seems to be very friendly - of course regardless of both his voice and/or appearance.
I don't think this video a good example to educate the public about the alteration on suits, needs to be moor in details for the people. I gave your video from 1 to 10 # 1
Can that place be any more British?

You've given me more to consider when it comes to having a suit jacket altered. Thanks for the information.
I need a navy suit, preferably for war.
We need to establish your size first
4exgold first we need to establish your size and it should be established that there has to be 1/2 an inch of space
The Fashion Archive And you’re going to be a 36 inch jacket sir.

Can jeans be altered? I would like to get the legs more tighter, less baggy. I`m in the U.S though.
+VWGTI yes the legs can be tapered in. There are few places to try in the USA just have a Google sure you will find somewhere 👍
VWGTI it's get the legs tighter not get the legs more tighter.
These are answers to many questions I've had for a while. I'm glad I discovered your channel. I'm very interested in your bespoke suits.

Is it possible to make sleeves tighter?
Yea Alex a decent tailor should be able to do this for you :)
Can you make the armseye smaller when tapering the body at the sides?
Very informative, thanks so much
Can you talk about taking the shoulders in with a bit more description, please?
You talked about the shoulders (which is discouraged as an altercation online due to its high expense and basic rebuilding of the suit's body) but how about the chest?
Yea terrific vid. Thanks for taking the time
Is it possible to let out the shoulders? And if it is, by how much is it recommended to do so?
Hi, how much would it cost to have trouser tapered and narrowed, and shortened?
Hi to taper and shorten them its £24.95 with us. regards
More or less how much would it cost to slim a bit the jacket?
Can a jacket be lengthened though?
How are lapels pressed? I ask because I find the crease position makes the jacket look too wide when unbuttoned.
Thanks for any suggestions and a great video.
British men are so classy ❣️
You mentioned some different fits from various retailers like Zara etc. How would you describe the fit from an old school shop like Cordings? Traditional? Generous? I'm considering purchasing maybe one of their country sport suits. Thank you.
Very helpful, thank you
Great video. Thx for sharing your knowledge :)
Do you more technical vids on specific areas rather than overall, apprentice tailor asking. Thanks.
Thank you
very informative.. Thanks for the info.
Hello,
i have a slim fit suit but not the jacket is tight from the front, how can that be adjusted ?
thx
lifenz1 hi if you mean it's too tight on the body then you can get a tailor to let it out on the side seams. Should be 1 inch to let it out. Also you can move the button over a touch to help with it if pinching on the front part. Regards
Great video.
If you take the jacket in at the sides do you go straight up to the arm hole? or just taper it in at the waist?
Mostly I find tapering best, but if it’s an extensive over haul with the sleeves being narrowed as well and you effectively taking the garment to pieces and starting again you can go straight up to the armhole.
How long does it take to get a suit tailored??

Can you take in more than 4 inches from the side seams?
Hi, you would have to take side seams in and the centre seam as well really to make it balanced out 👍
as an up and becoming Tailor, I was wondering if there were any specific tailor alteration knowledge you would expect a person to know if they were to be just starting up as a tailor in your business? maybe an off the peg alteration baseline?

What if you have a horizontal crease along the lower back (just above the start of the buttocks)? Can the body be let out?

Ch Santos hi normally you can lengthen the sleeve length by just under 1 inch. the tailor may have to put some extra lining on the inside but it is do able. so expect anywhere from 0.5 to 1 inch. Regards
Ch Santos what is the meaning of arm sleeves? It's sleeves.

if I buy a jacket in a size 42 can I have it altered for a size 40
Hi, yes thats fine to carry out. Prob taper body on rear side seams would make it fit fine. Poss shoulders bringing in a touch as well ?
why dont you just buy a size 40 ? :)
Hi option man, yes it can be done. Most the time its a case of tapering the jacket body down and then on the trousers bringing the waist in and poss tapering the leg width down as well.

can you alter a suit jacket from 48r to 42r?
I always thought that the shoulders couldn't be altered...
They can be altered to a degree, but it isn't something most dry cleaners or even a lot of just typical tailors can or be willing to do.
Your voice does not match you appearance...in a good way!
