UN-PAINTING A VINTAGE CHEST - AMAZING FURNITURE RESTORATION -no words- Surprising wood grain!

  • This dresser was drenched in multiple layers of very, very thick paint! I think they used exterior latex house paint on it! I was absolutely SHOCKED to see what was under all that paint!
    I used traditional paint remover AND a heat gun to remove the paint in this complete furniture restoration. Watch the video to see which method I found to work the best.
    I got this used and abused dresser at an auction for only $5. Unfortunately, I did not realize that is was so stinky until the ride home when I had to open all my car windows due to the malodorous fumes coming from my back seat! Gasp! Gasp! Fortunately, I was able to rid this abused little dresser not only of it's heavy coat of paint but also it bad odor!
    I hope you enjoy the video and this AMAZING TRANSFORMATION! This one really surprised me!

    My mom had a beautiful 5 bedroom house, built around the civil war, 10 ft high ceilings. Chestnut hard wood working throughout the house, mop boards, arches for big doorways, stair cases with a turn. Hardwood floors. Guess what they did with all this magnificent wood. You got it . White paint. Over the years, we took some of it off the stair case and some others small areas. Crazy. Beautiful home!

  • @kimkimba1131

    I liked how this turned out. The wood grain was amazing. The only issue I have is the staining inside the drawers. I don’t believe I have ever seen that until I started watching you. I just worry that the stain would rub off on any cloths you put in there. I think you put something on top of the stain…will that prevent the stain from bleeding on cloths? Most dressers I’ve seen leave the inside stain free. Anyway, it still looked pretty. Thanks for sharing.

    • @gailstinson4641
      @gailstinson4641 ปีที่แล้ว

      She sealed with a polyurethane and then a wax on top of that so that there would be no danger of any bleed through onto clothes.

    • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit
      @FurnitureFlippingForProfit  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you watch the video closely, I put 2 coats of polyurethane on the inside and outside of the drawers. I put 5 coats of poly on the drawer fronts and outside of the dresser. This chest of drawers had a terrible smell so the staining and poly certainly got rid of any possible lingering smell. However, I find my clients really are impressed when I stain the drawers. I have gotten splinters from the inside of drawers and snagged clothing/hose (yes some women still wear hose). It also cleaned up all the paint they had left on the drawers sides, etc.

I also see quite a few people cutting off any curvef features along the bottom of furniture thinking it looks more modern w/ angular lines. I was so happy you left the soft curving design along the bottom edge of the sides and front of your chest. ines along the bottom of your piece.

It has this wicker-like texture which looked great on the cabinets, but not the fridge. The Krud Cutter helped me get 3 layers of wallpaper off (40 years old) in one of the bedrooms in our house too. Good stuff, that! 👍🏼

    Some years ago at our Local Library branch there as a children's table about 4ft in Diameter. I was asked to refinish it by the librarian. Covered in several layers, paint. When I stripped it was a solid Maple table. I was able to get the distressed marks out and refinished it with several coats of poly. The table turned out to be from a high end producer. It even had a label. It came out so nice that the Head of the Library made a special trip 20 miles just to see refinished table. I left about 3 years later and still look in great shape.

If you haven't seen Tom's channel, you are missing out on one of the best restoration artists have seen or met. His videos are like this one, well organized and very informative, but he talks. I have never seen anyone with such an understanding of wood! His father was a woodworker and so is his brother. He works on pieces as old as the 1600s. Was expecting some inlaid work under all that paint 😅 . Nevertheless, did not disappoint...what a spectacular display of the woodgrain highlighted by your choice of stain. Lovely piece.
