The thing about doing Snape’s voice is both clenching the tongue and pulling it back at only such a slight degree is probably difficult to control. I think it takes enough time to get sharp control over that. Tongue clench can be very cruicial for a lot of voices. Even though Snape doesn’t require this the false vocal cords are also cruicial for a lot of character voices. Especially for the ones that break into that distorted voice where the true vocal cords aren’t used at all but the false vocal cords cover that up so it doesn’t sound like a whisper. Without the false vocal cord distortion it would be nothing more than a whisper. Distorted voices like this that involve the false vocal cords or the epiglottis can’t really sing or have any emotional or melodic patterns to the voice because the true vocal cords are required for that and when you add a false vocal cord or epiglottic distortion and minus absolutely all use of the true vocal cords you get a dark and empty voice. This here might completely defy voice breakdown and defeat the vocal education more thing I kinda wanted to comment for my own fun is that not only do animators train to manipulate their voices but they also sometimes have character voices that are electronically modified. Basically this is when someone records their voice and makes adjustments to the recording on a computer or a certain device with an app or filter to manipulate the recording and distort the sound. There are many electronic modifications probably. Maybe that can make the voice higher or lower pitched, brighter or darker, or maybe both of those but it’s so much different from manipulating your voice with the vocal body parts. Sometimes absolutely all adjustments to the vocal body parts are neglected because the true source of certain character voices is electronic modification. Even if the first four components are neglected for an impression you still gotta follow articulation and prosody. Actually for voices that defy or neglect the vocal cords, larynx, tongue, soft palate, and all those body parts due to electronic modification articulation and prosody may be even more cruicial since you wanna have a good impression or act like you still have to follow the characters pronunciation and personality. Like there’s so many tools voice actors and animation companies use. Sometimes there could be a voice that uses electronic modification instead of professional voice manipulation and no one sees it because the electronic modification is so accurate. Sorry, this is one long descriptive comment
Personally I don’t think many voice actors today use any electronic modification unless it’s a crazy voice type like synthetic or robotic sounding. Everything else is genuine human voice with the talent the companies have.
@@AtomizedSound yeah these modifiers don’t have the best quality. Sometimes when you lose a low pitch filter the recording becomes dark and distorted. So really these technology filters lack the separation of timbre and pitch. With enough practice you can get great control over the vocal cords but the challenge that might be possible is having every character in an animation or voice voiced by just one voice actor. I sometimes wish I could make an entire movie all by myself but that would take a lot of work and cost a lot of money

Some people who are fans of the harry potter franchise even claimed that professor Snape might even be a vampire although that claim has not been confirmed or denied by j.k.rowling and remains one of the most interesting theories out there on that remains unsolved to this day I mean hey one of harry potter father friends hid the fact that he was a werewolf for a long time from his friends outta of fear that they would leave him if they found about his condition but when they did they wouldn't leave his side they would find for the 4 of them to hang out with him he was happy for friends for finding out how to find a way to turn in another animal so that srirus peter and James can hangout with remus without the fear of accidentally killing his friends
Wow, earlier than the expected Hogwarts Day, I hope we can pay homage to Rick May for voicing the TF2 Soldier soon, he's the perfect Soldier voice for any military cartoons or films.
@@shiradaniel Sure, feel free to make more. We have a list we're taking note of for future videos. And yes, from The Little Mermaid and The Little Mermaid 2 :) -NYSC
You know I actually have a bit of a thought in my head. So we all know that a significant number of characters on voice breakdown involve tongue clench but not all of them share the exact same tongue clench sound. Like if you pair Stitch’s voice with Gollums then they have strikingly similar tongue clench sounds. But if you pair either one of those two up with maybe Fozzie Bear or Ray Romano then you’re gonna notice there’s absolutely no correlation or similarities to that sort of pair. For Ray Romano and Fozzie bear you gotta not only clench the tongue but also pull it back enough. When the tongue is pulled back enough while being clenched, the tongue clench sound is shifted and an entirely different sound is produced. Severus Snapes tongue is clenched and pulled back a little bit but not enough to break into this big shift. This of course affects the reasonance by changing the shape of the oral cavity like the tongue is typically used for. But there’s gotta something behind this tongue clench shift when it’s clenched and pulled back enough. There could possibly be body parts in your jaw at the back of the mouth that the tongue interacts with when clenched but has to be pulled back to reach them in order to do so in which that interaction changes the sound of the tongue clench. The epiglottis is the leaf shaped body part behind your tongue. When the tongue is clenched and pulled back far enough it hits the epiglottis clogging the airway causing a vibration which produces vocal distortion. Any character with epiglottic distortion you can possibly think of can literally be used as an example of the tongue being both clenched and pulled back since both of those two things have to be done to vibrate the epiglottis. Think Miss Piggy, Yoda, Animal, the Cave of wonders. They all have epiglottic distortion. If you’re familiar with epiglottic distortion and know how to perform it then maybe you could keep the tongue clenched and carefully slide it forward to where it no longer hits the epiglottis but not back to its regular position and that could probably help you find that distinct tongue clench sound that you’re gonna need for voices similar to Fozzie Bear and Ray Romano. This is what I had to do to get familiar with that tongue positioning and that sound because before I messed up horribly with Fozzie Bears voice until I managed to find the epiglottic distortion and carefully slide the tongue out of the distortion while still being clenched. My theory specifically is that whenever the tongue is pulled back enough while being clenched disregarding how small or large the tongue clench degree is that there could be something in the back area of your mouth that the tongue interacts with when it is clenched and pulled back far enough to reach. Which of course shifts the resonance of the voice and makes the sound of clenching the tongue a whole lot different. I may be wrong but I feel like this comment may seem a bit logical because Brendan Houdekk did say Snapes voice involved the tongue being slightly pulled back and slightly clenched but the clenched sound of the voice doesn’t make that big shift I mentioned. The bubble sound in Snapes voice is more similar to the sound present in the voices of Stitch and Gollum despite the small tongue retraction.
This series is brilliant! I'm curious, will there be any voices that use a completely different form of speech production? I'd like to learn to imitate Donald Duck, but I struggle making any form of intelligible buccal speech beyond the basic quacking sound.
