I'm 75, it's 2024. Ry has directly and indirectly always been part of my musical life; I consider myself blessed to have lived in these musical times. Mine is the 1st generation to grow up on rock and roll. I loved it in the 50s and love it today. Every day of my life I've been able to find great music to enjoy. I get annoyed by people claiming there's no great music anymore or the 'best' was in the past.
Musician's musician, amazing musicologist and humanitarian. Ry and his music have gotten me through more hard scrapes than I can count. He has always stood for the pure and eternal-people music--in his lifetime. I sing this song all the time and it is totally because Ry sang it and presented it so well.
I am so jealous of anyone who has been to a live ry cooder show....I share the compelling attraction of this guy's uncanny story telling, slide playing, mandolin picking, instrument hot-rodding way of life. Theres alot of us influenced by his stylings.......if he is a dying breed, I am convinced there are a few of you out there who have the key to keeping the ry cooder legacy thriving.
I love Ryland. Been listenin' to him since the vinyl LP, Into the Purple Valley. Not just coz his playin' done showed me stuff how to play plucked musics, but coz he's taught me lotsa things about LA -- Chavez Ravine, the racey fast cars in the California desertlands, riots on Bunker Hill, the lady dressed in white with a white handbag playing a tenor guitar to the cigarette-dangling-from-a-lips loitering unemployeds around Pershing Square. Ry's not just one of the most interesting guitar players, he's a downtown, street & session musicologist and historian. His sense of history informs his sense of the present-day; if that's political, I'll let him channel Jesus any time.
I'm glad I saw Ry with various bands in the early 70's through the 80's. He had such power then. Everyone gets diminished when they are much older and frail. Thanks Ry.
A real man of real music in a world of musical bullshit and worthless plastic veneers of nothingness........a real warm soul in a arrid desert..........my hero since his very first album.
I've listened to and admired Ry since "Safe As Milk". He brought a freshness and a timelessness to Americana songs and World music. I thought he "got" what music was about much more than many of his hit seeking seers. And I have always been fascinated by his seemingly endless focus on unearthing past musical works and the way he finds new ways to present them. I'm afraid Ry is a dying breed, but maybe great organic music can keep on keeping on. Every bit of slide guitar that I do now is 100% derived from Ry's great albums. .
YES Ry Cooder, this is wath is all about, Jesus is on the mainline, GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND !!!!!!! THIS IS JUST AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dream came true when we saw him at massey hall in Toronto just before covid hit ....front row seats and a little pricey but it was magical and well worth it ....got the set list from a cool stage hand ....he doesn't tour often so I feel fortunate
perkinscrane, " Into the Purple Valley" is another really good one. For what it's worth, somebody else here mentioned the "Jazz" recording, which Ry himself really did not like and wasn't happy with.
I went to see Cooder live in Glasgow in the early 80's it was Ry Cooder and the Moulah Banda Rythm Aces (legends) He played 2 concerts Fri and Sat and tickets were sold out before the phone lines for tickets opened. I had no chance. However the ticket company contacted me and told me he was doing an extra concert on the Sunday due to demand (sold out the SECC the biggest venue in Scotland) They gave me 2 tickets. When I got there I couldn't find my seat. The venue was enormous. I kept getting waved down towards the front by stewards until I got to the FRONT ROW MIDDLE 2 SEATS. I dont know to this day why they gave me these seats. We made eye contact all the way through the show and it was filmed , the entire show was filmed and I will be in it with my gf but I have never been able to find any of the film footage. If you watch the Sant Cruz concert on here, it was the exact same show and band as that apart from 2 things. At the interval he did not go off stage he pulled up a chair and sat right at the edge of the stage and played acoustic singing Jesus on the Mainline etc. Then the band came back on. The other thing that happened was that he had a guest artist...the guest was 'Harry Dean Stanton' who came on and sang Across the Borderline. I never went to another concert ever after that..........what would be the point. I saw the best guitarist that has ever existed playing the best show ever. Anything else after that would be a crushing let down.
Grew up on this man ,, on a Tape !!!! never saw him and never knew how he looked . Several albums later including " Thew long riders" CONVERTED What a man !!
A musical sage, a guru, a master, a visionary whose talent and humanity enriches the culture of all nations. As a species we should all be proud that our civilisation produced someone like Ry Cooder.
Turning? I guess so. His artistry got my attention so long ago that to me he's been a legend for awhile now. He's more a legend in the musician industry than with the masses. It's a shame. Best slide guitarist alive today and one of the best ever for sure.
? Where have you been the past 40 yrs ? Ry Cooder was a legend in the Music industry before he had even recorded an album playing all the stuff the Rolling Stones COULDNT on their albums for them amongst many others...got something the band cant play ? Call Ry Cooder, recording studios are expensive and he only needs one take.He was a blues legend over 40 yrs ago.He has transcended that now.
Peter Young Peter Young Ry has had that one since 1970 I think it is. He talks about it on a video on here. He has hundreds of string instruments at his home arranged by type with a shelf labelled "WEIRD STUFF". Jesus on the main...line...
Gordon M, Ry's buddy David Lindley has even more string instruments then why does, and a much weirder collection. wonderfully so, wonderfully weird that is.
Gordon M. Great simple tone too. www.rycooder.nl is a great resource btw. Pictures of Ry's infinite collection of string instruments! One shelf is labelled "WEIRD STUFF". LOL!
Crystal Longdon Thanks Crystal. I love Ry. His style is the greatest. I love the old Blues players. I remember playing Into the Purple Valley and bring blown away. Just impossible playing. I love all music. Ray Charles. Django Reinhardt. Bob Dylan spewing pure truth. Electronic music like Klaus Schultze or Kraftwerk. It's all beautiful to me. Proves that life is not an error ...
Brendan Tovey. Ry would be the first to admit he learned a great deal from the old blues artists and folk artists that he watched as a teenager. But he is certainly not just some old bloke copying his style. Ry has enriched, preserved, and built on the musicality of many types of music. He has 6 Grammy Awards to prove it and a lifetime, nearly 50 years of music behind him. He is one of the most respected guitarists in the world. I doubt you did any research before you made that silly comment.
Ry has occasionally been called a minstrel minus the blackface. In the words of Cab Calloway...."it ain't what you do, it's the way how you do it"...and he does it....
All over what Dave Chapman said, absolutely, entirely, correct it, Sir. What goes round if you get on board, comes around again and again, the circle unbroken, commitments to something and becoming what you studied. It's cool.

That's the real thing. Ry Cooder is an authentic American music treasure.

teh best there ever was.
A genuine GIFT FROM GOD!
Dare to go one step further. A worldwide treasure. Kudos to you.
Thanks Ryland for the last 50+ years. Oh, gotta go make the call. Bless you!

One of the greatest’s of all time.
So simple yet so nuanced.
Sheer genius
Love this man so much 38 years ago I named my son after him 💖
Ethan, is that you?
Ry Cooder is a national and international treasure.
The Master at work, what a legend and still doing brilliantly after all these years...when will we see his like again
One of my favourites played with Ry's unique flair.
Ry Cooder has always a great presence on stage...
If I could play guitar like that, I'd just sit on my front porch and play till I died. Happily.
Anthony Pecora me too...
No Fooling!
Anthony Pecora so have you learned to play yet!??
Musician's musician, amazing musicologist and humanitarian. Ry and his music have gotten me through more hard scrapes than I can count. He has always stood for the pure and eternal-people music--in his lifetime. I sing this song all the time and it is totally because Ry sang it and presented it so well.
Feel exactly the same way my brother. One of kind. So grateful .
Ryland, you are a National Value... God Bless you .
Love this guy.His music speaks to everyone.

I saw him live 3 times many years ago! Won't forget it either,
He was incredible live. Just one man sitting on a stool, but he had the little club on fire, singing along
Check out Blake Mills. He’s carrying the Ry style torch now.
Utterly unique, utterly irreplaceable. Top of the mountain.
I WANT more Ry Cooder music....
I love Ryland. Been listenin' to him since the vinyl LP, Into the Purple Valley. You feel he's diminished?
Oceans of respect for this man.
I’ve started playing this tune at my local bluegrass jam. I’m going to steal his tuning and chords! This is fantastic.
A real man of real music in a world of musical bullshit and worthless plastic veneers of nothingness........a real warm soul in a arrid desert..........my hero since his very first album.
He is too cool
Yes
Spot on well said!
Bubbacat54 I’m. 72 yr old Aussie who still has his first album , vinyl of course. Agree with your appraisal of contemporary junk.
This man's for real. An artist and a musical historian. A national treasure. Pity to hear the voice deteriorating.
Listen to "The prodigal Son" live in studio, his voice has changed a little but is not deteriorating.
If you wanna call it deteriorating you are missing the point my dear brother.
Hey I was at this show! Waited all night for Ry, and only one song...but it was a good one!
I've listened to and admired Ry since "Safe As Milk". He brought a freshness and a timelessness to Americana songs and World music. I thought he "got" what music was about much more than many of his hit seeking seers. safe as milk still on my regular play list
What a talent!What stellar tone!
Cooder used to have a t-shirt with Tone Is God. His is certainly heavenly.
It's a melody you can fool around with. Ry is loving his old years. He's music incarnate.
Saw him around 2019 in Albuquerque with his son, great show, but he is getting older. Had to take some oxygen breaks (we are a mile high city though).
Ry always bringing it real. Saw him open for Littke Feat in the 60's. Jesus wa on the mainline, just call him up....tell him....
Little Feat? 1970's, not 60's.
Just an inspired new version. Thank you, Ry. Your songs have always brought joy into my being.
'The Slide Man' ... Gold never rusts and Cooder's slide guitar will always sound great.
noobi core
No ferrous metals in Ry's soul - it's pure silver and gold like the bust of Charlemagne!
@@gordonm.7387 Quelle comparaison ! Ha ha !
Just like a fine wine, gets better with age.......brilliant
I second it,the greatest solo artist ever lived or appeared on a stage..sensational..and a great solo singer.a musician that has no end..r u with me?
YES Ry Cooder, this is wath is all about, Jesus is on the mainline, GOD BLESS YOU MY FRIEND !!!!!!! THIS IS JUST AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is a LONG NECKED Telecaster. And the inimitable Ry Cooder.
Hmm only an Australian yokel that has appreciated Ry since the early 70s I take the long neck was suitable to his slide expertise 😊
Einer der größten und genialsten Musiker, weit weg vom Mainstream.😊
Beautiful playing. Rock on Ry...
Dream came true when we saw him at massey hall in Toronto just before covid hit ....front row seats and a little pricey but it was magical and well worth it ....got the set list from a cool stage hand ....he doesn't tour often so I feel fortunate
We had the great thrill of seeing ry in Belfast some years ago, where we aquired a signed copy of his book, Los Angeles stories.
Ry Cooder is legend in the world music...Buena Vista Social Club forever in my mind and my heart!!!
Professor Daniel
Amen Prof! Ry is music itself. It's Jesus on the mainline...
Everything he does is genius.
Jazz is one of my favorite albums.
Paradise and Lunch surely
perkinscrane, " Into the Purple Valley" is another really good one. For what it's worth, somebody else here mentioned the "Jazz" recording, which Ry himself really did not like and wasn't happy with.
@@Garret00074 Jazz is not Ry's favorite...It doesn't matter for us.
Since Southern Comfort , that sound track is mind blowing....been a fan ever since.....brilliant music 🆒🎵

Saw him in Glasgow twice back in the day. Mocha rhythm aces, special guest, Harry Dean stanton. Oh boy. Goodnight Irene.x😊
Mr. Cooder is turning into a blues legend like the ones he learned from.
Dave Chapman
Washington Philips. The Lemons. Lead Belly. Most people don't know these guys. They listen to Mikey Gaga or some bad singer!
LOL....you don't need dancers and choreography if you have depth?
