Rororo is not a common animal to begin with: he's a hydra, that makes him a magical animal, and as such he's intelligent. Not being able to speak intelligent, but being self-conscious and able to make decisions intelligent, and that part of the story is from his prospective, with his background. Rororo is a hydra, but it's deformed: he only has 4 heads, instead of 9, and so he's abandoned by his parents, left to die alone. That's when Zaryusu finds him, and adopts him. Zaryusu becomes his father-brother. During the charge we have a recount of Rororo's thoughts, we have the description of every searing pain moment with every fireball hit, we see that his scales are charred and peel off, and still he goes on, when his istincts are screaming at him to flee, when the pain is so unbearable he's losing the sense of self, he still goes on, for his brother, for his family, even when he's convinced he'll die with the next spell, he still goes on to protect those he loves. And in the end of the march there's only one thing: void.
