I have a 2003 Mountaineer and the gas gauge reads empty, a ford tech. has informed me that the sensing element in the fuel tank builds up carbon and the only way to fix it is to replace it, meaning that they have to drop the fuel tank. Any others having this problem and if so how did you correct this problem. We also have a problem with the driver's seat heater, I can not get it to go off!
Hi, Sarah.... Have you put any additives in the fuel tank.... if not maybe try some seafoam... this stuff works great.... and as for the heated seat, maybe try looking at the realy in the fuse pannel or u could un plug it but its cold outside...
I had that same problem. I dropped the tank and tested the gauge sending unit. You can find the proper way to drop the tank and test the sending unit here on youtube. When I realized the sending unit was okay, I kept searching for the problem. With my multimeter I found where the connection was breaking down. Along the wire harness there is a small blackish grey box. (approx 3/4" thick by 2" wide by maybe 3 - 3 1/2" long) You may have to cut back the tape and remove some of the plastic wire covering on the wires. Once you have determined which which wires are the right ones for the gauge, use temp. jumper wires to reconnect these wires by bypassing this little box. (I believe there is a yellow and a black...maybe a red one too I can't remember it was a few months ago when I did this) Once you have tested and determined which ones they are you can cut these wires and splice them together. Once done splicing, turn the ignition on and be sure the gauge is registering on the dash.....(by the way, the ignition has to be on during all these testing procedures) When all is working you can reinstall the tank and "EVERYTHING" else you took off to make the "BACKYARD" repair. My wife's car had this issue and once we were done it worked perfectly and has for the last 4 months or so. Good luck if you try this. I can however tell you that a repair shop is going to change the gauge sending unit and it won't work once they do. It is this little box I speak of that is causing the problem.
Your are right my friend. With out God you could not completed your task. Thank you for sharing my friend.

Shannon Hall
Also, while you are in there.....it's a GREAT time to change the fuel filter. It is a B**** to get to and easier with the tank out.
Well great job to you Shannon Hall, glad u were able to DIY!! Saving big bucks$$$
