Solo Camping and Fly Fishing in the Iconic Snowy Mountains High Country

- A 3 day solo adventure of hiking, camping and fly fishing in the Snowy Mountains High Country. It was a personal goal of mine to film a vlog style fly fishing adventure in 2022 and this trip was the perfect opportunity to capture stunning scenery and some great fishing in one of my favourite locations.
It was a real learning experience to shoot this style of video as it's something I'm not familiar with or particularly comfortable doing. I didn't fully appreciate all the effort that goes into shooting this kind of video. Carrying the extra weight of the camera gear and factoring in the time it takes to set up each shot. There are several things I would do differently if I could have the time over but overall it was a great experience.
I don't know if it is the type of format that I would make again, and I'm not sure how it will be received, but it's something that I wanted to do for myself first and foremost.

very nice production mate, loved the videography combo of rivers and the general location - good that it's a solid walk in so it discourages the yobbo's that leave their garbage and toilet paper, one fish for the pot would have been nice to do over the fire with your beer too mate - we all love to watch a bit of that. Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it mate. Personally I don’t eat a lot of trout, mainly because I’ve seen these fisheries in tougher times and I don’t really think everybody killing a 2lb brown every time they come to this particular river is sustainable.
In rivers with a bigger population of fish I wouldn’t have any issue doing it, I just don’t really want to be part of promoting that. A lot of people have a blanket “taking one for a feed won’t hurt” mentality and that unfortunately just isn’t true for some rivers.
Please keep making these! Great job, I look forward to having adventures similar to yours one day.

Josh what a terrific job you've done here. I fished the Snowy a few years back with my eldest son and we had such a wonderful time. You've captured the experience beautifully here with an elegant combination of scenery, commentary, fly fishing and sound...I don't think I stopped smiling all the way through. Keep these coming mate. We never tire of seeing the beautiful high country of Oz, its beautiful rivers meandering through the valleys and really hope to return soon when we can get back across from WA. This time me and all my boys will come so they can experience this wonderful countryside.

A trip like this is something I one day aspire to do, with the minimal trout fishing down in SA though, looks like I have a big drive to look forward to.

Looks like a lovely place to camp and fish! Are there any native fish in there or have trout fully taken over? Do the regs allow you to keep a fish or two for a streamside lunch/dinner? Not too much wood around for a fire-looks like the Scottish highlands.
Thanks Brian, I imagine trout have fully taken over like most of the rivers in the area. You are allowed to keep fish from this river, I just chose not to on this particular trip.

Why would you go fishing, catch a fish but eat spaghetti bolognese??
Because I’ve fished this river in past years where you might only see 1-2 fish over an entire trip. I’d like for it to continue to be a sustainable fishery so I’m happy to release the fish I catch there.
@@Joshtreds I’m all for sustainable, and there are ways to achieve that through restocking, bag limits etc. BUT 9 out of 10 fly fishing channels are showing this catch release business, and there are 100s of them. Challenge would be going there with some salt and oil (ok coffee, beer) and catch and eat. Forage for some edibles/bush tucker vegg. and Bob’s your uncle! No catch, no eat…would perhaps help you grow your channel
@@nikzbiljic I appreciate your feedback mate, but I have no real interest in growing my channel. This video was just a personal goal and challenge that I wanted to tick off this style of videography. I have been on several trips since then but have not filmed them because it’s more important for me to just enjoy being there. Sure I might make another one again at some point, but I’m not thinking about what will appeal to others, it’s just documenting my experience. I personally get more satisfaction out of catching and releasing trout, especially in rivers that I have seen in much bleaker times, so I don’t feel the need to change that because it might earn me some extra views.

Josh, I don’t understand this new fashion / trend where people now are fishing with a 200 kilo backpack strapped on. In your case you already pitched the tent and accessories left in the tent so why the big pack, pissy little raincoat, first aid kit maybe? What happened to the days of wearing the good old fishing vest?
I don’t know about trend/fashion. It’s the convenience of being able to store my camera gear when it rains/river crossings, hold my 1L water bottle + water filter kit, my first aid kit, lunch and snacks, different camera lenses to switch to etc
The reason I like this hyperlite bag is because it rolls down to a smaller size pack, suited to when I’ve removed the tent/camping gear. Previously I’d take an additional stash-able bag with me and leave the hiking bag at camp.
At this point, wearing a vest would be for fashion in my case, because it certainly wouldn’t be practical…
