Hi Jimmy, thank you. Great to see a review of Photolab4. I too have just bought the upgrade from 3. I`m still finding all the new features so thank you for pointing some things out. Also I find DXO is great for processing Olympus high resolution images from RAW. I have an E-M5 mkII and find I can make full use of the 64MP RAW images without having to shrink the resolution similar to the JPEG file. DXO seems to get the best out of the larger files for me at least. I recommend also the DXO Viewpoint to add to Photolab as it is essential if you want to straighten verticals etc and Filmpack can be added but now DXO Nik filters also incorporates Viewpoint into the Nik package. It would be nice though if DXO had ViewPoint built in as standard. Thank you again take care and stay safe.
You should state at the beginning that you're using the Elite version of PL4. Many of the tools you mention are not available in the Essential version, e.g., Prime and Deep Prime noise reduction.
An interesting review and I've recently installed the free trial. Quite liking the program. My only complaint is that you need to pay extra for a plugin to get perspective corrections.
Jimmy, thanks for great review. I too am a amazed at the new DXO PL4 and have adopted for main editor and plan to drop Adobe. I teach photography at University of Virginia.
Great review - I just upgraded from PL3 and thought it would be a minor upgrade but it really is great. Thanks for a very clear, well organized review.
Thanks for the interesting review. Software looks promising for sure. Question, have you had a chance to run some high-res RAW files through this (either 80mp or 50mp hand held high-res)? I know Olympus workspace is preferred but wondering what the results may be with DXO. Other software I've tried with high-res images has been disappointing, and would be nice to have a one solution software option. Thanks again.
Jimmy- thanks for your insightful videos. I’ve been watching for about a year...I’ve improved with your guidance! I was very interested in your PhotoLab 4 video but found the background music a real distraction from your great commentary. I’m a lifelong professional musician (trumpet/synthesizers) and personally feel if there is music in a video...it should have purpose and enhance the moment. In this case the opposite was the result. Love your stuff and hope for your financial success thru these unprecedented challenging times.
First thank you for watching my videos and glad they are helpful. I shall take note in music and it seems that this particular video received a few similar comments. Thank for letting met know. Yes I am looking forward to new year and hope things get better for everyone
Couldn't find it to be better than Topaz, while some raw files were processed cleaner even in Lightroom, and there is no room for much customization. On top of that, software "recognized" my kit lens M.Zuiko 14-42 as Panasonic Vario lens, and there is no way to correct that manually, so those files are assumably not optimized. More on, this package doesn't even have split toning, you need to pay some Elite film pack, additional 70-100 EUR, to get it together with film simulation you might not need. If you want some filters, Nik Collection costs another 150 EUR, so the total package is around 450 EUR to get approximately what is offered in Luminar. The offer is on 30% discount currently, and that is still at least 300 EUR. For that money you can get 3 Topaz apps plus Luminar.
Most people are reporting colour cast problems with Topaz, that and a serious smoothing of detail. I trialled 4 "de-noise" standalone products. None of them touched DxO DeepPrime.
@@doghouseriley4732 using Topaz for long and never saw any colour cast issue, while smoothing of detail can take place if you push sliders to the limit. Topaz offers you AI recommendation of settings, but it is you to assess them, and adjust as needed, which is imho the only reasonable approach. DeepPrime is trying to do everything for you, and in my case, after through testing, I gave it up entirely, I could not process a single image to satisfactory results. Sliders are rough and useless, seem to be put only to comply with formality, while their idea is to do all work for you. If that works for you, that's fine. I myself think I spent enough time trying, any other software I use work better for me.
Thanks Jimmy, mmm I've downloaded the trial last week and I'm considering it. I've been looking for something cheaper than Capture One for my EM5 Mkii's RAW files. I shoot RAW + JPEG, and I'm just so blown away by the quality of the JPEGs , that I use that as cross reference for my RAW edits... Many times the JPEGs are basically perfect to start with! I can't get my RAWs to look as good as the original JPEGs using Lightroom...
Unfortunately, PhotoLab is not so much cheaper than Capture One, because you need the "Elite" version plus ViewPoint to be able to apply geometric corrections. That's around 200 $/€ then. But it's worth it!
@@hauke3644 I see I was checking Capture One price in AUD. But CO still more more expensive than Photolab, albeit not by the margin I was thinking. As someone else commented. I'll be checking everyone's Black Friday prices. hope they have further discounts!
Just purchased tonight Jimmy it's sure v capable for a great price but some strange quirks. If I open a jpeg & change something (eg add metadata for pic libraries), there is no File/Save option to simply resave, I have to export again creating another JPEG??? Seems v odd??
The reason there's no save is that everything is non-destructive, there's a 'sidecars' file next to your image file in the folder, you can actually see it. If you want the changes to be 'permanently burned' into the file, you will need to export it again, this is the same as any non-destructive program, including Lightroom.
@@Red35Photography thanks Jimmy, I use PS Elements normally which has the File/Save option hence my confusion. Hopefully I'll get used to it, including the new terminology (sidecar!), either way I appreciate your feedback as always.
Usefull review, thank you ! What about colors ? Early versions of the software (DXO Optics Pro) which I tried, produced redish colours, very far away of what Olympus engine produces. Is the reason I never considered DXO products as an real editing option. What about DXO PhotoLab4? How are the colours? Did you tried to compare original Olympus jpeg with DXO output ?
Hi, Is DeepPrime Denoising in Dxo Photolab 4 carefull not apply the noise reduction evenly across the image, so you don't end up smearing or distroying fine detail?
Oh it's far more than normal stuff you've seen or used so far. The best way to see it is to try it. free download link is in the description. This video isn't sponsored, so I am only saying it after trying it after a few weeks.
@@Red35Photography Thanks for your reply. Before I download the program, I would like to hear your opinion. As a professional photographer using M4/3 system you should have an opinion about it than just saying that it is more than normal stuff or used so far. The fact that the video is not sponsored gives you more credence.
Thanks Jimmy, I think I'll definitely upgrade from PL3 then. But this time I'll wait a little, because two times now I've been burned by taking DxO's initial upgrade at 30% when just a few weeks later they offered everything at 50% for Black Friday.
Be sure to check if your camera is supported. After downloading the trial version, I was saddened to find out my cameras were not supported. The cameras are multiple months old, so I was very surprised DXO does not yet support them. BTW, Topaz DeNoiseAi supports their raw files. Just be sure your camera is supported before spending your hard earned money.
There is a bug in the Windows version simple fix change rendering to just one image at a time. Also if you change to CPU only will work but that's slow. I changed my version to OpenGL also but I don't think that really matters. Also I closed all AMD and ATI software in Task Manager running in the back ground. But I think you just need to go to preferences and change render one image at a time. Default is two images at time.
Thanks also Jimmy. I saw your earlier video and downloaded the trial as a result and after a few examples I bought the full version. Now your latest video has convinced me that I can finally ditch being tied to Adobe LR. I just have to convince myself that I can retain access to my LR library without compromising my 30000 photos. For example will this mean re-editing large numbers of files?
I don't t think you need to but I am not entirely sure just yet but LR does allow you to export XML files with all the settings that can be used in other programs or at a later stage. Something perhaps worth sending DxO an email about it. They probably knows better than me technically. I am going to start using DxO for future works as it gives me much better looking and higher quality high ISO files, this is particularly useful for weddings and portraits in low lights. Great stuff.
I recently did the same (a month ago) and felt incensed when Adobe told me I would not be able to open my catalog. I desperately started exporting full size jpegs. As it happens, I can still open all my catalogs. What I can't do, is use the develop module, nor softproof my images. I can still import, export and keyword. I made sure that my catalogs wrote sidecar files, but I suspect you could do this after ending your subscription. I tended to work on virtual copies. If you have edited an original then you won't be able to see the before state (But you can always do that in some other software). At the very worst you could restart your subscription, but I felt a sense of freedom leaving Adobe behind :)
Since Photolab 3, you could Command+Shift+C and Command+Shift+V to apply changes from one photo to one or many of them (same kind of shortcut as many text editor when you paste either text or style). With PL4, you could Command+Shift+Alt+V to open the "which settings to apply" modal dialog and paste then. (so often, I edit one, copy result, select all and paste it to all of them : Command+Shift+C => Command + A => Command+Shift+V. Obviously, now that I can make choices, I'll let the crop out of this paste with Command+Shift+Alt+V) For selection, x to reject, p to keep, u to reset, same with shift to go on next image with same keys to process and go on. (all these shortcut are in the Help > shortcut menu, found selection shortcuts there). Main complain is "creative vignetting" which is not PL4 feature but FilmPack feature which is the only feature I really look for in filmpack.
Thanks Julien!! Much appreciated the lesson. They never list them in the 'Help' section and when I Google, there seems to be no information. I like this community, so informative. Now I learn a few more things. For the copy and paste, yes, I realised that you can do that before, just not with the flexibility to select what you want to paste :)
In a way, but on a flip side, DxO allows you to manage your own library, i.e. the location of your files. You can still do metadata and filters with it so not too much of a problem.
@@Red35Photography Yeah, unlike LR, PL4 doesn't keep catalog file(s) that must be updated when you move files/folders around. If I were a big LR Collections or Smart Collections user, I'd have to round-trip with PL4 (squarepixel has a good workflow post for this). I've been using demo mode of PL3, then PL4 now for 2 months, and haven't bothered with LR since. The (very adjustable) automatic processing in PL4, and the noise reduction has improved my baseline shots so much, it's like I got a much better camera.
ISO 2000 is child's play... With "normal" Prime denoise, for my liking you are already good up to ISO 6400, with Deep Prime you can go beyond that. Recently I could rescue a picture, that I had accidentally taken with ISO 25000! (turned the wheel one stop beyond auto...). Still not perfect, but ok for my personal use. Last year, I had chosen PhotoLab 2 over Lightroom, because the results of some difficult test images without much effort where clearly better. PhotoLab's default settings are already good for many pictures, even with difficult light situations. Some thousand images later and now on version 4, I have only minor complaints: The color balance sometimes is difficult, just making the tone warmer or colder seldom works. Usually I have to use the second slider as well to remove a green or purple tint. Some of the lens profiles are not perfect, they over-correct distortions (Panasonic Leica 15mm and Olympus 17/1.8) and for some lenses (Panasonic Leica 15mm) I need to reduce the sharpening. The basic camera curve should be chosen automatically. Even worse, not all Olympus models are covered. But all that is minor...
Great video Cheng ! I've been using DxO for many years and this new version is far better than its predecessors. However, there is still one thing were DxO is not so good, that is sharpening. And good sharpening is very important for an Olympus user, because of high resolution : RAW files of high resolution images need heavy sharpening. I use Topaz Denoise for that, because Denoise has also a very good sharpening tool. Speaking of noise reduction, I would say that DxO deep prime is very near Topaz denoise, sometimes better. Again with high res images, DxO is not the best tool when you have to use Photoshop layers for masking artefacts of moving objects. So I use DxO for every single shots, but for high res shots, the workflow of Lightroom, Photoshop, and Topaz plugin is better. Another thing is that Lightroom offers integrated HDR and Panorama fusion which work well.
Cheers mate for your words. I love DxO now and it's definitely the best M43 editor out there, I still use Lightroom for management but I think I will slowly migrate to DxO for all processing needs, once I get the colours to my liking (setting up presets).
Hi Frederic, have you tried to first convert Hi Res Raw with Olympus Workspace with its sharpening tool? I am a fan of DxO and have been happy for Hi Res files through OWS, then DxO. I only applied +1 sharpening through OWS then tweak Lens Sharpness later on with DxO. Works really well for me.
@@narinthip3058 Hi ! I tried that, but I still think that Topaz sharpening tool is better. It also nice to have in the same preview the effect of sharpening and noise reduction. But the workflow is somewhat cumbersome between LR, PS and Topaz. So, if DxO can do the job all by itself, as it can for almost every normal (not highres) single shot, it's the way to go.
To Pick a photo press p and to reject press x - I tend just to press p for the ones I want to edit then in the filter untick Untagged Images :) Haven't looked back since replacing Adobe with DXO Lab PL3, especially with Olympus Raw's :)
Really? I couldn't find it in the instruction, under the menu, they didn't say anything about keyboard shortcuts either, perhaps they forgot to add it in. So it's pretty much like Lightroom for Pick :)
@@Red35Photography in PL3 I just click on Help (top menu) (don't type anything) and 4th item in the list is Photolab Shortcuts, click on that an there is the full list of keyboards shortcuts
@@JohnGrindles In my PL3 that help screen only shows the shortcuts for ratings, not for picking and rejecting. And P and X do not work for me. P just jumps to the first image. Maybe that's new in PL4? But other than P and X, you can also use CTRL+7 to Pick, 8 to Untag and 9 to Reject. If you're already using the number keys for ratings, that might be easier than P and X.
I've been using dxo software since DxO Optics Pro early releases alongside with Lightroom. Then Adobe wanted me to accept TO PAY MONTHLY/SUBSCRIBE and I refused. Since that moment I have been using only Dxo software and I'm much satisfied. I own 'elite3' edition and the only thing that puts me off to upgrade is...my laptop which doesn't want to answer my question if it can handle with '4'😳😉 I might as well download and check which is probable to happen even today . You might be the one that makes me do it😜 . cheers, mate ❕
I get you mate. All software, each update requires more powerful computers to run faster. Latest lightrook is ridiculously slow, and I have the latest top spec mac!! I just think things could be a whole lot easier
My images always come out better when processed in PL3 than lightroom. So I'd imagine that would be improved upon with 4 from what I'm hearing. ISO 6400 was as good as ISO400 on a G9 and GX9. I'd go so far as to say there is a conspiracy between adobe and the top camera makers..... but that'd be crazy......until you realize that Capture 1 is noticeably better processing Fuji images than lightroom as well and then a pattern begins to emerge. ;)
I'm a Photolab 2/nik/Affinity user and really wanted to like PL4. BUT, I downloaded the trial and it was sloooowww! I have a 4 year old i5/16GByte PC and it took 5 minutes to load 100 jpeg/tiff images into the Library from my NAS drive over a gigabit network. Renaming 6 files took over a minute. PL2 is much faster (not as fast as Affinity, but then Affinity doesn't have any DAM features, it's just a file browser.) Buying a new PC adds £1000 to the upgrade, not going to happen! I'll try copying the files to my SSD and see if its the network, but evebn if it is thats not going to wor for long term use. Pity, I love the new features. A much bigger upgrade than PL3 was. BTW I'm pretty sure there is a way to hide the right/left columns in PL, I just can't remember how at the moment. Need to search the help... I think that's what you said you wanted?
I've just done more testing and it seems that for some reason my PC was connecting to the NAS via WiFi - so only 50Mb instead of gigabit! Now the load time is down to a couple of minutes and renaming is just a few seconds. Much better! But it does seem PL4 is very network sensitive which might be important if you routinely use WiFi. I've another 2 weeks left on the trial so we'll see if I'm converted by then! PS. You can collapse the side panels or make individual palettes float/collapse etc. What you can't do is change the width, they are either on or off :-(
I said this on your older video, but as far as the best results out of the box as a RAW processor, Photolab is the absolute best, even better than Capture One (which I used to consider the gold standard). Photolab also has the best noise reduction tool on the market, nothing comes close, not even Topaz. Where the downside kicks in is their creative tools just aren't up to snuff, and Capture One kind of runs away with it there. And Luminar has all those fancy tools which are tons of fun creatively (though it's a piece of shit as a RAW processor). If Nik could introduce C1 style layers, luminosity masks, and a proper color grading tool it would be unbeatable.
Next time you do a tutorial TURN OFF THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!! It is very distracting!! Very difficult to follow what you are saying!! Turned it off halfway because of it
Funny thing. I like your delivery, I think you are pretty personable, you deliver a thorough review, so why run over the whole video which must be the most annoying "muzak" that anyone can find on the internet. Seriously? I'd really like you to post this video without the music, then I could watch it the whole way through.
That channel is so boring... Probably one of the reason Olympus died : VERY boring “ambassadors". Same thing with that peter guy ( another Olympus ambassador)
Olympus ambassadors are boring boomers, so their channels maybe not for you 🙂 but i still prefer them over most young but loudsy immatured sony ambassadors..lol
Nobody, and I mean nobody, can replace Adobe. Why not? Because Adobe is the only company that looks further than the computer 😉 That's why I gladly pay for 1tb Adobe cloud with full access to lightroom and photoshop 😊 even though I only use lightroom 😊
More Abode crap. God it bores me when they get staff to come on here. Why rent old Adobe when there are new kids on the block who are so much cheaper? Adobe went down the rental approach, because they wanted to rinse even more money out of their customers. And that created a market for loads of companies to rise, creating new innovative software solutions for photography, leaving old Adobe spluttering around. 99% of photgraphers are not professionals, they don't want an expensive, never ending contract. I want to buy my software like my house, not rent it forever.
Perhaps it is just me, but I find the continuing background music very distracting and not helpful for following the dialogue. Each to his own taste.

Now I learn a few more things. For the copy and paste, yes, I realised that you can do that before, just not with the flexibility to select what you want to paste :)
What do you think? where is the rendering quality better ... DxO or C1?
C1 is very good, but if you are looking at noise reduction feature alone, at present, I don't think anything is close to what DxO has to offer.
Are you going to miss the Lightroom Library module? PL4 Photo Library seems very basic compared to LR.
You could actually still use this as it doesn't disappear when the subscription ends.
Good review. Thanks
@@Red35Photography click on help, there is a keyboard shortcut list, well there is on pl3. 👍
@@JohnGrindles I did, when I typed in ‘Pick’ they show me what’s under the menu but no short cuts
Agreed! Turn down the muzac Jimmy.
I'd go so far as to say there is a conspiracy between adobe and the top camera makers..... but that'd be crazy......until you realize that Capture 1 is noticeably better processing Fuji images than lightroom as well and then a pattern begins to emerge. ;)
brilliant
If you want to take a picture, make the sun black and stick Mount Everest in the background, use Luminar. For photography, use DxO
Next time you do a tutorial TURN OFF THE BACKGROUND MUSIC!!! It is very distracting!! Very difficult to follow what you are saying!! Turned it off halfway because of it
Sorry Jimmy - the background music makes this practically unwatchable. The message is lost.
Thanks, noted.
God alive; please make the background music quieter
Thanks mate noted
Funny thing. I like your delivery, I think you are pretty personable, you deliver a thorough review, so why run over the whole video which must be the most annoying "muzak" that anyone can find on the internet. Seriously? I'd really like you to post this video without the music, then I could watch it the whole way through.
Terrible distraction having music in the background - have more confidence in your content - the music adds nothing but annoyance!
Sorry, it was almost unbearable to watch because of the horrible music.
@@StaffViet2009 yeah you're right too.. Can we find something in between lol?
Nobody, and I mean nobody, can replace Adobe. Why not? Because Adobe is the only company that looks further than the computer 😉
That's why I gladly pay for 1tb Adobe cloud with full access to lightroom and photoshop 😊 even though I only use lightroom 😊
:)
