    • EV Hill Climb EP 4: Ma...
    Electric two-wheeler sales have been growing every month and their popularity among the Indian masses has grown exponentially. This has to do with the introduction of many premium EV two-wheelers that not only offer good performance, but usable range and come loaded with features. We have done many real-world EV two-wheeler tests on ZigWheels, both individually and as a comparison. However, there has always been one key question - are EVs useful on hilly areas or mountain roads.
    This got us curious and for this very reason we are here today. What we have with us are the most popular and most premium EV scooters on sale in India - Ola S1 Pro, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak and the Ather 450X. The EV hill climb test is simple, which electric scooter among these can go up and down the hill and clock the highest range. The results are very surprising!

    DTE for iQube was accurate after the descent because it adjusts to the current conditions, it's dynamic. If the scooter was going further down with the same slope, it'd have increased further because not a lot of battery was getting used. :)

    @zigwheels when going downhill in ola it's recommended to apply cruise control at 30 , range will increase once you go down...in mysore on top of nandi temple my range was 87Km 13 kms later after coming downill...my range was 91 km...so ya cruise control in downhill is the best way to extract awesome regen...but again now in the new update you also have variable regen settings..for better regen

    I felt in ola, eco mode is useful only on inch by inch moving traffic. Once can switch to eco mode from normal mode after reaching some speed. Pickup is nonsense but cruisability is good. After 30 kmph speed the pick up is good in eco mode .
    I heard in Move OS 3.0 update speed is increased to 45 kmph and slightly better torque in eco mode. Also regen kicks from 90% battery than 75% in the current version.

    Not everyone use regen the same way. Some use it lot more efficiently than others. Ola regen is actually very good, it doesn't even consume 1% battery in such downhills. In fact, it's common to see the battery increase. Maybe switch the riders between chetak and ola, test again. And this time entirely in normal mode.

      @Arun Nadar Even my s1 pro gains battery while i am on a downhill run. I haven't been on hills after move OS 3 beta(Now you get 3 modes of regen) but the regen has been improved a lot.

    • @kamathln
      @kamathln ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Havent used electeic vehicles much, but repeating tests multiple times with different riders is a common practice during serious performance tests.
      Also, rather than only finding which scooter is the best, I think it is equally or more important to find out the best combination of
      riding style + scooter + riding mode.
      Maybe even find the best way to extract the best mileage from each scooter..
      I saw in another video where a Tata Nexon EV gave better mileage in Drive mode than eco mode when a certain person drove it.

    It’s kinda dumb to compare Eco Mode of Ola to the ones of TVS, Ather and Bajaj.
    The Ola S1 Pro easily climbs hills in Normal Mode without overheating whatsoever. We Ola Mumbai Owners did Bhor Ghat without any heating issues at all.
    Was myself stunned about the crap circulating online about heating issues. Normal Mode is the Default mode I’d say !
    JUST USE NORMAL MODE ON THE OLA S1 PRO ON HILLS

    imo, TVS iQube perform the very best.
    Also in uphill ride TVS showed low range because of heavy usage of power but in downhill road it showed the perfect range. So maybe the ECU or whatever the chip inside the TVS iQube performs better than other company EVs as it can do perfect calculations of range.
    I think other EVs just calculate range according to the battery percentage.
    Meanwhile iQube calculations are better than others

  • @quraish786
    @quraish786 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    For any EV the more you twist the throttle the higher the battery consumption. Even though the Ather shows more range on the dash in Eco it generally gives higher range in ride or sports mode when riding sedately. So suppose you are using 80% throttle to achieve 35kmph in eco and 40% throttle to achieve the same speed in Sports mode, the sports mode will return a higher range despite whatever figure is shown on the dash. Try the test in Sports mode and keeping speeds between 30 to 35kmph and you may see completely different results for both range and drivability. Cheers!!

    Well my brother booked the Ather 450 in mid 2018 and when it was delivered it was all good as he was in Bangalore and electric scooty is good for plains. But as Corona started he had to work from home and by the way we live in Bijanbari (Darjeeling), well he came home as IT's started implementing work from home and he brought his scooty too (packers and movers). Well that scooty was a show case out here! But really after a month or so it started heating a lot. At first from bijanbari to darjeeling seemed OK that is almost 24kms up hill. We had to carry the charger which was to heavy and bulky (well smaller one was available but my brother didn't buy it) and here there are no charging docks, we literally had to stop by shops asking them if they could lend us their points for us to charge, but ppl out here is generous they say okay everytime, we usually gave them 100 rs , but after 7 to 8 trips it really started heating and usually stopped multiple times in mid-way and that too on our 1 way trip that is 12 to 15 kms from starting point not the whole return round trip. We usually make 2 trips max from bijanbari to darjeeling a month so that scooty didn't last long and totally stopped riding long roads well 24 kms is not enough but in hills that battery doesn't last long, it has that power but the batter and I guess the motor too need 10x improvement. And by the way only one seater in up hill if two people sits it won't last long it heats up bad and totally stops and doesn't pull at all, even one seater is too is risky, my brother had to leave the scooty multiple times mid way as it started overheating and stopped multiple times that too on one way trip up hill not both return trip and the battery consumption would be at least 60 to 65% for 12 to 15 kms can you imagine? Lol but my bike saved the day everytime. We left the scooty on spot as usual spot were we had tea and some snacks and my brother would ride with me and when we returned he had to turn off the scooty down hill to save the battery as sometimes there are up hills again when you go back to bijanbari. Well bijanbari is a valley so there are many ups and downs! So the moral of this story : DON'T BUY ELECTRIC SCOOTY IF YOU LIVE IN HILLS AND THAT TOO STEEP HILLS! YOU WILL REGRET IT! Electric scooty is only good for plains and hills that are not too steep.

    I live in a hilly area. I have a 45oX Gen2. And I have been satisfied with the experience so far. The best thing about the ather is it's ability to get up steep hills with ease, even with a pillion rider. The gradeability numbers officially released by these companies indicate Ather to be good at tackling steep hills, and it shows. But I don't know what the limit is, and I don't know how the other scooters fare. So, it'll be great to have a proper check on the gradeability of the vehicles also during hill climb challenges. It's quite insightful to people living in hilly areas because some rural roads have inclines that seem stupidly impossible to cross over, but petrol 2 wheelers seem to be able tackle it. So, for people living in such places considering to buy an electric 2 wheeler, it'll be a very important factor for consideration.

    Hypermiling best done on higher modes, lower speeds. So less stress on motor and BMS temperature will be managed. Reason for this is, lower modes have a speed limit eg: 51km/h in eco mode for Ather 450X, so when nearing that speed it uses more electrical resistance to keep the speed limited which results in more heat snd more battery energy consumption.

    • @palpankajpal
      @palpankajpal ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I totally agree with this. It really hurts my shoulder to pull the throttle to max-ish. So I started driving Ola S1 Pro in Sports Mode only, this helps with same speeds at less pull of the throttle. And to my surprise Sports Mode is using 2-3% less battery than Normal mode. If I use Sports Mode and I'm driving under 80 kmph (Normal Mode's) max speed I still get the same/better range. Reviewers should test this theory as well. Why not drive on best ride Modes while maintaining the speed of 40 kmph and then report the results?
