It's amazing how the BYU center kept challenging him as if somehow something was going to change. They needed to start looking for other avenues to score.
It's his timing, just like a fighter, reach is worthless if your timing is off or reactions are slow. Shaq was the perfect combo of size reflex and athleticism
Yet his last college game was a loss against my Indiana Hoosiers. I've always been proud that Shaq and Michael Jordan both lost in their last game against the Hoosiers.
Some people ragging on the BYU guys here but I guarantee that if most of us ever played pick up against them they would dominate you and any one of them would probably be the best player you've ever seen in real life.
NEVER GONNA HAPPEN. have you seen this guy's distance shooting? it's awful. no way his game can translate to the modern nba. maybe 25 years ago, but not anymore
This guy can't hit a free throw. Can't make it in the nba if you can't shoot free throws. They'll just keep hacking him again and again. It'll be a hack-a-shaq.
It's a trip watching this and back then I thought Shaq was humongous! If Shaq stayed this weight for most of his NBA career no telling what would've happened. He was still the most dominant player in the league.
Curtis Otaa, Fun Fact: ironically a year earlier, BYUs Shawn Bradley had set the single game tourney record for blocks against Virginia (I was at that game). Bradley went on a church mission to Australia, and then Shaq broke his record in this game.
His reaction time and speed were the key. Yeah - he's huge. Yeah, naturally strong (HE'S HUGE) - but he was underestimated regarding his speed and agility. And his sense of humor :)
Shaq would LET their post guys get it in the paint just so he could swat it. He was baiting them into it. After 5-6 you’d think BYU would learn the lesson. Never been a more physically impressive athlete.
@NolaVerse TV Nah, not 8 straight. 7 max cuz Shaq was not what he used to be, unless they became best buds and motivated each other on or off the court. Cuz Shaq was low-key like Dennis Rodman, he knew he didn't have to work as hard to dominate but Kobe was the opposite
@@kevinseveneleven didnt the Spurs win the championship in '99 before the Lakers 3 peated. They did win the Finals in 2003 as well so I'm going to assume the beat the Lakers that year in the playoffs as well
Kobe was too selfish a player for that to happen. The loss to the Pistons in 04 proved it because they really should have won. He wanted to be the leading scorer & MVP and the biggest star even though the blueprint for the previous 3 titles was let Shaq dominate. Check out the very low assist totals he had, especially to Shaq in that series.
He got so big later on. He was probably a hundred pounds plus heavier than this in his later playing years, especially at the beginnings of seasons when he would still need to play his way into shape.
Don’t feel bad for #32 from BYU. A few years later he met the woman he loved who turned down marriage proposals from him 11 times before she eventually said “yes”! Shaquille taught this man how to accept rejection!
I have a couple of other suggestions for videos. 1) Cole Aldrich gets a triple-double with points, rebounds and blocks against Dayton in the second round of 2009 NCAA tournament. He also did it in his home state of Minnesota. The first triple-double since Dwayne Wade's and the first to do it with blocks since Shaq did it in this game. 2) Jeff Withey sets record for number of blocked shots in one NCAA tournament with 31 in 2012.
Funny how LSU never really did much in that era. Dale Brown was a really good coach but seemed at his best when the expectations were low like in 1986 and 1987. The team he had in 1981 was a really good team that happened to run into Isiah Thomas and Indiana in the Final Four. I recall when LSU had Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts and Shaq thinking they would dominate but they just never seemed to gel. I recall when Chris Jackson was almost Maravich like in his freshman season in some games.
Just imagine if Shaq focused 100% on basketball and stayed in shape. He's already an all time great but if he actually worked out and practiced as a pro legitimately could have been the best of all time
Baba nah I’m in Orlando he dropped weight but became more cut in LA he became undisciplined cause his dad passed(his step dad was super strict & a vet)
God who would of guessed this dominate force not being drafted and going on to do great things in the insurance, food, and electronic business!! Everyone at this time thought he would be the most dominate player in NBA but to never reach the nba and take that dominance to entrepreneurship and tv😮. Salute!
He was so massive. Who would've thought he'd be such a polarizing figure in the entertainment industry too? Af first he seemed to be a try hard but people eventually came around.
Yes, BYU should have made adjustments. Watching Shaq in this short video, I noticed a lot of his blocks are with his right hand and very few with the left. BYU should have rotated to his left side. If that still doesn’t work, then don’t challenge him, kick it out as the defense collapses inside.
If Shaq has stayed at 280 and had been more focused, he would have been the most explosive Big Man of all time! He underachieved and he had to go find and play with greats to get his rings.
26/13/11 and he got the win in Boise. I was only 3 when this game was played, so idk how the NCAA chose game sites but it seems the underseed got an advantageous location...right?
Shaq was a handful in college I played him I was 6’9 playing center I had 22 points on him.. but he had 30 on me all dunks lol I never made nba I played overseas .. but enjoyed my games against shaq nice guy too
It's been reported Shaq weighed about 250 lbs as a rookie in Orlando and when he retired in Boston I have reliable sources that he actually weighed about 420 to 440lbs. Conversely Ray Allen weighed 204 as a rookie and retired at 205. Shaq ideally should not have exceeded 270-275 lbs and he likely would not have had foot and hip injuries. Kobe was dedicated and disciplined, Shaq was the exact opposite. No wonder Kobe had no respect for him...
You figured after 6 blocks in the first half you’d stop going inside!
Guess not🤣
I know right?
I thought so too
Well, the game plan against shaq back then was get him into foul trouble.
Why? He just get smacking it out of bounds giving it right back to BYU.
It's amazing how the BYU center kept challenging him as if somehow something was going to change. They needed to start looking for other avenues to score.
Bruh he was obviously trying to foul shaq out that's all byu was worried about
That was the strategy back then while he was in the College. Get him into foul trouble so we can get him out of the game.
"but but but.. I did a pump fake like coach told me to."
@Adrian Gamos we're well past that brother, Shaq made the dude look like he couldn't post up Isaiah Thomas
I'm sure they tried other avenues, this is a SHAQ highlight so naturally only shows his blocks and not the other team shooting mid-range jumpers.
The impressive part is that the blocks are majorly due to his athleticism and skill not just size. He’s swatting fairly open jump shooters in iso
He has perfect timing
access Absolutely
Its really just due to his length and reaction time dude and the skill of blocking shots precisely
It's his timing, just like a fighter, reach is worthless if your timing is off or reactions are slow. Shaq was the perfect combo of size reflex and athleticism
Nah, alot is due to height.
Shaq looks like he's playing against children lol

This should be the most time a single player gets his shot blocked in a basketball game.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
That BYU coach was losing his mind, not realizing his center was playing against Shaq lolol
Curtis Otaa,

What? Shaq was already. Celebrity in college lol
triple double with blocks is insane. remember that year no if or buts who was going to be the #1 lottery pick.

I remember that game. BYU had a couple 7 footers and Shaquille stuffed them all. It was an incredible performance.
When O'Neal weighed less and had speed and agility. That all changed in the pros, where he backed up toward the basket like a dump truck.
The extra weight might’ve helped him offensively but definitely slowed him down on d.

Shaq with his Patrick Ewing knee pads lol.
shaq said he wore them to be like Charles Shackleford, whom he stole the Shaq nickname from
