When you look back it’s so obvious that his game would translate to the nba. But obviously nobody had ever seen a player with his skill set like that before which is why they weren’t too sure if he could succeed in the next level. Everything he did in college is exactly what he’s doing in the nba

Even today I still think what this man did in college is underrated. To this day he is literally the only player in Davidson's history to make the NBA. He brought a team full of walk-ons and unrecruited guys to the elite 8, and almost made it to the final 4.

Right under everyone's nose is one of the greatest to ever play the game and no one had a clue. Not recruited by duke/ unc or any of the major schools. Shows that hard work and dedication pays off.
He was over looked by every D1 it didn’t matter his dad was a nba player , no one cared , he wasn’t supposed to be this good 6’2 165 pounds .. he is proof to take the opportunity you’ve earned and show them all they made a mistake! He was not a automatic star in the nba he he’s the definition of hard work and talent combined the greats are never suppose to be great, they become great threw adversity and now this kid is the best shooter the nba has ever seen and the face of the nba. Here after his epic Olympics finals and semi-finals. It's funny to remember this tournament and how everyone was rooting so hard for Davidson as "Cinderella," when in reality they had a super weapon and a huge advantage over everybody.

I remember this team making this run with this boyish player just playing amazing basketball. It was freaking great! I have been a Celtics fans my entire life but nobody gets me as pumped as Curry does when he gets it going. Bird is the only comparison I can make for the level of sheer excitement I would get watching him do things nobody else could do. Jordan. That's it. Everyone else at least 1 step down on the thrill meter.

It's amazing that guys like Stehp Curry, Jimmer Fredette, Adam Morrison can light up and dominate college hoops, but some end up not doing anything in the NBA, while others become legends
Curry’s game is built properly, and add in super human shooting. The other guys probably more mid range guys, undersized for nba. Morrison just another post player that can get stopped in nba

Yep. There's always an ingredient to success on the next level that is hard to measure. Some make that breakthrough and others don't. And there's not always a good "reason". Most of the reasons guys come up with in hindsight is just looking at the outcome to try to create a reason. There's been people less talented than Jimmer, smaller and less athletic as well who have made it at the next level. TJ McConnell for example. Jimmer beats him in every measurable and was clearly more talented, but TJ McConnell is a mainstay in the NBA and Jimmer couldn't last and wasn't even able to make a comeback in a 3pt happy era despite several attempts.
Curry’s release is lightning fast - much faster than Morrison or Fredette. His away from the ball movement is also pure artistry - and he never gets tired so can move continuously in patterns that are crazy hard to defend for a full possession.
True that great college scores and only few become legends
I remember watching this game in a pretty packed bar on a Sunday afternoon drinking Heinekens (nostalgic notation as someone now sober) and enjoying a great game with a fun atmosphere. 95% of the bar was rooting for Davidson, and I bet more than half of them couldn't even tell you what state Davidson college is in. That Davidson team not only had the great Curry, but went 20-0 in conference play, won their conference tournament with ease, and was riding a 25 game winning streak coming into the Kansas game. Needless to say, they gave the eventual champs all they wanted, and certainly gave them a better game than another team from North Carolina did in the Final Four that year.
KU blasted 1 seed UNC out of the universe and came back from 9 down in the last 2 minutes to take the title from 1 seed Memphis. Curry could have won Davidson the title if they'd gotten by KU.
His shot was smooth here but his shot sooooo much smoother now.
I watched that Gonzaga game because my cousin had been RAVING about "Dell Curry's son" all season. I thought "He can't be that good; he's on Davidson." All I could say after the game was "Oh".

I've been watching the NCAA Tournament ever since 1990. This is probably the greatest NCAA Tournament performance run by any player that I've seen in the history of the tournament. Steph Curry carried that Davidson team. If Curry didn't play for Davidson, they wouldn't have made it that far in the tournament as they did that year or to be honest not have made it to the tournament at all. I bet top college coaches were beating themselves in the head after watching Curry's tournament performance since there were no top major college basketball programs recruiting Curry out of high school.
Kemba Walker's championship run in 2011 was more impressive.

This was definitely one of the funnest tournaments I've ever watched. Curry, all 4 #1 seeds in the final four. Then the Jay Hawks winning it all. All while living in Lawrence KS!

I am a UNC fan and was at the Gonzaga game with my dad, Early in the year, Davidson almost beat us as a top 5 ranked team. I remember watching that game on TV and finding it incredible that this skinny little dude named Curry didn't seemed to be intimidated by us, Carolina, the historic program. He genuinely looked like he knew he was the best player on the floor and didn't care that he played for a small school like Davidson. Fast forward to March and I got to see him torch Gonzaga in person and everybody else the rest of the tournament. It was a very special moment now with some retrospect of what he has become since.
Imagine being in the crowd watching cos your kid is on the bench for the other team and you think wow that guy they got is really good.Years later you see him on tv and he's world famous as one of the greatest basketballers to ever live.
What’s crazy is he has pretty much the same game just more mature, stronger body, etc with time. Looking back now I’m like “ok, he was coming just not many believed it”. Seriously a Goat!!!

He's an NBA Players son its in his Genes. He went to Davidson & Made them contenders no one could stop him only a triple team. He's just a Smaller Guard so he was always over looked but his hard work and skill always showed.
I remember watching that 2008 tournament and watching Davidson lose that game to the Jayhawks in the elite 8. I couldn't believe he passed up on the last shot. Would've played Derrick Rose and the Memphis Tigers in the Championship if they made it. I knew then the kid would be special but wow, now he's the greatest 3 point shooter of all time!!!

I still remember this run, he was the best player I've ever seen in the NCAA tourney. I was mind blown. I never knew just how great he'd become but there's no way you watch this run and don't think he's special

Obviously I didn't think steph would become what he became in the NBA, but one thing for sure, even back in 2008, he was must see TV. He was by far the most intriguing player to watch in this tournament, and even the next year when he returned to school, every time he was on TV, I was tuning in if I could. I hated that people doubted that he would make it in the NBA, even though I wasn't all the way sure myself.

not a lot of teams can say that they were able to overcome double digit leads against gonzaga and georgetown in the tournament.
If you look up the stats there was a game that a coach made it his perogative to make sure Curry didn't break 10 points. He had him quad teamed all game and he scored 8 points and Davidson won by 50+ points. The next game he went back to his 30 point average.
The crazy part is that even though they only made the elite 8, Kansas demolished every team they faced en route to a championship.... except Davidson, who they barely held on against
It's not that crazy. Who was the best player on Kansas? Was he better than Steph Curry? Basketball is the least team sport of all the team sports. One superstar and you can beat anyone.
