Dude Recess was like one of the best cartoons to watch after I just got home from school. It used to always come on right at 4pm on Toon Disney! Good times...
"Every adult you've ever known was a kid at sometime in his life, you think we don't remember summer vacation? Riding bikes down by the creek? Catching polliwogs in a jar, camping out under the stars? Well you're wrong." RIP Dabney Coleman, you helped change how I view adulthood so early.
After that movie I love the entire dynamic changed for TJ. The fact they had a special welcome to the sixth grade where after coming back the BOE made major changes to the school. In protest TJ decided that he would not go to school as an act of rebellion. No pranks, no one got hurt, but just a simple protest. With Principle Prickly coming up having a heart to heart conversation and in the end Prickly stood by TJ. Because he agreed with him, and didn't care for the new changes. In the end we grew up just like Prickly Said.

This was an incredible show. We all know every single kid on that playground and it so perfectly captures the timeless feel of childhood. You could be born in the 50s or in modern day and still totally relate to this cartoon...

I remember watching this show as a kid. Now, in my 4th year being a teacher myself, I want to rewatch it to remember how it feels to be a kid. Hopefully reminding myself of their perspective. Maybe even show some of my students an episode or two.
I loved Recess, I remember watching it every Saturday morning. Personally, I don't want to see a reboot or continuation. The show was great, but we all know that anything produced today would not live up to our hopes. Let's keep the wonderful memories and let the show remain as it was.
YES! Growing up, I always favored more slice-of-life comedic shows with little to no sci-fi/fantasy elements like Hey Arnold, The Weekenders, As Told By Ginger, etc. Recess was probably the most outrageous and out-there show of the bunch, but it was also one of the smartest in a way. What you said about how episodes could serve as allegories to societal issues in adult life is so true. My favorite was the trading card episode that was an allegory for labor under capitalism (wild episode) and another about King Bob wanting to build pyramids in his honor, which reflected power tripping and dictatorship. This show is fantastic. Thanks for another great video!
Recess was one of those cartoons that you can never fully forget. Just watching the scenes in this video brought back VIVID memories. It taught you something ever episode. It would be cool if a reboot or sequel were created but it would never have the same weight or "natural feeling" for lack of a better term as the original. It would be trying to do call backs, references or try to be current instead of just being fun with good messages
Can't believe it took this long for you to do an episode on Recess. Great job as usual! I think that if they were to reboot Recess, not to split focus between a new cast and the original cast. They should do an hour to hour and a half special that focuses on the main cast as adults that leads into the series that focuses on a new cast of kids, passing the torch to the next generation. An example might be that the government is going to shut down the school to divert funding to some state of the art facility. And TJ and the gang get back together to save the school from being demolished in a more adult way (protesting, suing, petitioning, etc.) where we can see each of them shine as adults. Perhaps TJ or Mikey becomes the new principle and we get introduced to our new main cast by the end of it which the series would focus on, with nothing more than small cameos from old characters. Let it be one final message to the older generation (millennials/early gen z) and then shift focus to the new generation (late gen z/ gen alpha)
Rewatched the theatrical movie less then a week before this upload. That movie holds up so well, and is easily in my top 10 favorite movies of all time
The one episode that is burned into my memory is the one where they climb a tree to protest against it getting cut down and the whole school singing "we shall not be moved."
I think Recess along with Gargoyles, Randy Cunningham, Kim Possible, and W.I.T.C.H are one of the few Disney animated series that needs a continuation (like the new Phineas & Ferb season) or a reboot (like the 2017 DuckTales series). Granted I don’t know if _Recess_ will get a sequel series or a reboot animated series considering it was made for its time during 1990’s to early 2000’s and along with the fact some of the young actors (particularly TJ) had their voices changed or the original actors have passed away (Mikey Blumberg and Principal Prickly’s voice actors) but hey a guy can dream.
my favourite show. I rewatched it recently and didn't realise how much it echoed real life in a lot of ways, a lot of life lessons and whatever. Power corrupts
I don’t think I ever watched the show, but one of the people on the show went on to help make Pound Puppies (the 2010 version), which has always been a cartoon I love.
I think one of the major things I loved about the show was how very human all characters were. While the principle and miss Finster usually were antagonists, the reasoning behind their actions always had a core that you can relate to as an adult and, of course, they were not perfect human beings that made no error either. This always came out the most when an actually evil character would enter and the usual antagonists (even Randal had his moment, I think) took on the role of a hero instead.
Early on it does set that tone, Like the episode where Micky does volunteer work at a senior citizen center. Every one wanted to leave to go watch a movie, but one by one they found someone they connected with. Getting inspired by the lives they lived. Like how Spinelli was bored to having to sit with some old lady while she was knitting, but then Spinelli realized that she was knitting a pair of boxing gloves. Learning that the lady she was hanging out with use to be a pro boxer.
I absolutely loved this growing up. It really felt like what life was like on the playground. I have had my kids watch, and they love it just as much as I did. They relate to everything still. Kids just being kids.
Recess was the most popular Saturday morning cartoon that aired on ABC during that time! I used to watch it with my cousins at sleepovers and we used to compare Mrs Finster to our wicked school principal! Even though the school cliques in Recess are kind of dated and it’s not relevant anymore, the cartoon still has the charm of poking fun at schools being a bureaucracy with kids not having enough freedom in school!
Heck yeah I remember recess! It’s one of the best cartoon ever made! I love it growing up and still do now. I watch their Halloween, thanksgiving and Christmas specials every year. I liked how the show portrayed its characters. So often in kids shows teachers are comically portrayed as uncaring. Here while principal prickly and miss Finster often serve s antagonists they aren’t villains or anything, and as the show went on their role were expanded and they were shown to be good people who have good relationships with the kids and who are just doing their jobs. The kids know this. perhaps this is best shown in the episode “prickly is leaving” where principal pricky is leaving 3rd street to be the principal at the middle school a job that the show has repeatedly made clear is something he wants. The gang is happy at first but when the met Dr Slicer(who is much worse than Prickly could ever be…and voice by TIM CURRY) their soon to be principal they try to get him to stay. But they Fail. When Prickly is leaving the school TJ tells him that he’s going to miss him and that he’s been a good principal. This leave prickly visible touched but Slicer mock him for it. the next day the kids are set to have Slicer as their principal but prickly walks in as their principal and though he says it’s because superintendent skinner would pay him enough its clear that the REAL reason he stayed was cause he wanted to protect the kids. it goes in revise too. In the episode “the biggest trouble ever” the recess gang accidently brakes a statue of Thaddeus the Third (the namesake of their school) and get punished for it. Miss Finster has them do stuff like cut the grass with scissors and clean the hallways with toothbrushes. While all of this is bad the mayor of the town comes and tell them to get ready for their REAL punishment- being separated from each other by being place in different schools. This HORRFIES Miss Finster and Prickly feels like its over kill but the may donest care. Miss Finster asks TJ if he has a plan for this and prickly even tries to defend the kids in court saying that they are good kids. It doesn’t work but still it took courage to do. This show was funny, clever, heartwarming and just all around amazing!
This was a very good series. I hope that, if they do reboot, it keeps the same fun reinterpretations of grown up scenarios in a kid setting that the original series had. My favorite episode was the Picture Day episode, where Gus willingly blocked a muddy ball to make sure that TJ looked good for picture. His dad said that Gus looked great in the picture because of how proud he looked standing up for his friend, drawing parallels to a soldier earning a Purple Heart for taking a shot that was meant for an ally and saving his life.
I remember as a kid sitting down to do my homework and turning on the tv to find Recess playing a marathon. Needless to say my homework didn’t get done.
I’ve always felt that Recess has a soft nostalgic spot for some many as it was one of the last true Saturday morning cartoons. Kids WB may have survived the longest, but Cartoon Network was already running 24/7 and Saturday morning cartoons didn’t mean as much by then. I was hoping when the Recess video arrived from Jordan that it would have been a 2 hour break down, but this was nice.
This was one of the major landing spots for the staff of Rugrats after the original 65. It makes holding it to the standard of Hey Arnold! (The other spot) all the more valid
That’s what I did like about Recess, and Hey Arnold Arnold was the fact it would be relatable yet complex at the same time! Things that would be exaggerated, but real at the same time! It really did show the world through the eyes of a kid. That’s how I saw the world even when I was a teenager so I liked shows like that. As far as a reboot would go I’m not so sure because I don’t know where that would go because I think it would focus maybe on their kids to be honest and see how the gang lost their way as they grow up too. A common theme these days when we see kid characters grown-up you know. What do you think?
I went to Recess Schools Out for my 10th birthday with all my friends. I got to go in early and pick out a row for us to sit in and it got roped off it was so cool. I’ll always remember that birthday
I wish you covered the voice cast a little more. The voice actress for Finster is the daughter of legendary actor Paul Winchell (Tigger) And the voice of Gus is the same kid who was in The Shining "Red Rum!... Red Rum!" They even had James 'Hades' Wood as the antagonist for the movie!
One of my favorite disney shows of all time. They succeed in making it a timeless classic because Im still able to show younger kids this and it is still relevant
i am from the UK so the term recess isnt really a thing, so whenever i hear it i think of the show. i thought it was great, despite things not being the same over here and the movie was GREAT

Pfft you got my subscription, Recess was one of my FAVORITE shows to watch as a kid, and I am cruising on Memory Lane now 💜 I look forward to more content from you, and I am definitely gonna surf your video lists after this, see what other cool shite ya got.
Recess was so awesome. I loved that show. I think a reboot with new kids would be the best way to go. Maybe have the old cast show up as background characters. Nothing more. Here and there, one offs. Not as any sort of main focus.
I loved Recess back when I was in school, around 2004 to 2006, it was super relatable even if I wasn't exactly like any of the kids of the group, somehow their adventures were always realistic enough to see myself in those situations in my own school. I still love that show, it's so good even as an adult, but about a reboot, I think the balance between showing the kids being adults and new kids would have to be done extremely carefully for it to work.
I never grew up with recess. My older sibling said that this was one of the best cartoons, along with hey Arnold, pepper ran, etc. I started watching the show and I loved it, it really captured how kids see the world differently. It’s so crazy to think that TJ had 3 different voice actors.
It's funny that I stumbled across this video. A few days ago, i was watching an episodes of recess, and two subtle scenes made me laugh, and the story plot was good, and i couldn't help but think, "Now i remember why this show is great!" Grim adventures of Billy and mandy is goated too.

I was hoping when the Recess video arrived from Jordan that it would have been a 2 hour break down, but this was nice.
This was one of the major landing spots for the staff of Rugrats after the original 65. It makes holding it to the standard of Hey Arnold! (The other spot) all the more valid
Not surprising, considering a lot of the staff worked on all three shows.
@ That’s what I’m saying
I remember watching "Recess" on Toon Disney when i was a kid!
Good old days of TV for 90s or 2000s kids 😊
See I knew you'd come in clutch 👌🏾. In all seriousness im excited to see what you have in store for December. Please don't work too hard 😊
Yes
That’s what I did like about Recess, and Hey Arnold Arnold was the fact it would be relatable yet complex at the same time! Things that would be exaggerated, but real at the same time! It really did show the world through the eyes of a kid. That’s how I saw the world even when I was a teenager so I liked shows like that. As far as a reboot would go I’m not so sure because I don’t know where that would go because I think it would focus maybe on their kids to be honest and see how the gang lost their way as they grow up too. A common theme these days when we see kid characters grown-up you know. What do you think?
I was always so excited to catch Recess after school growing up, it helped me navigate my transfer from one school to another.
Do i remember recess? Are you kidding me, i watch the movie every summer
I went to Recess Schools Out for my 10th birthday with all my friends. I got to go in early and pick out a row for us to sit in and it got roped off it was so cool. I’ll always remember that birthday
Another show I swear you might have covered but am shocked to see a video on now! Nice.
I would love to see the original pilot of Recess over a Recess Reboot
I'm glad the rebooted series didn't get made. That would have ruined this like Joker 2 did.
Also 400th comment.
Big time comfort show for me.
You've covered SO MANY of our childhood cartoons, that the fact you haven't covered Recess honestly baffles me 😳
Grew up watching this back when it was out. Loved it... Miss those days 😢😢😢of 😢
recess and pepper ann were peak saturday morning cartoons
I wish you covered the voice cast a little more.
The voice actress for Finster is the daughter of legendary actor Paul Winchell (Tigger)
And the voice of Gus is the same kid who was in The Shining "Red Rum!... Red Rum!"
They even had James 'Hades' Wood as the antagonist for the movie!
Fun fact: In the Norwegian dubs, it's also the same guy doing Hades and the movie villain (and Jafar for good measure)
@@stigkennethlimmesand7443 Same with Finnish dub too (but he's Iago and Razoul instead Jafar) !
I liked the animation style
There’s a cake mix I saw at a grocery store one time called deliciously moist should have had Randel as he mascot lol
One of my favorite disney shows of all time. They succeed in making it a timeless classic because Im still able to show younger kids this and it is still relevant
i am from the UK so the term recess isnt really a thing, so whenever i hear it i think of the show.
i thought it was great, despite things not being the same over here
and the movie was GREAT
Everyday after school i always watched this show. I swear even until I was high school. I love this show
I remembered recess, the reson I remembered recess is becuse my Elementary school looks like the school in the show
Spinelli is my all time favorite character voice by Pamela Adlon
Thanks to the death of Dale Earnhardt I rember the day of seeing recess schools out in theaters
i've been waiting for this
Dude, I've been debating on subbing to your channel for a couple days now, I saw your videos on Megas XLR, Loonatics Unleashed, and S.R.M.T.H.F.G. (the robot monkey team) and you resurfaced what few good childhood memories I have. But with this?
Oh I remember that show like it debuted yesterday, it was one of my all-time favourite TV shows growing up.
One of my favorite episodes is the one where every student wanted to know how was/what was insde the teacher's room.
I used to watch recess religously with my cousins in mexico. We all had the same childhood in north america.
It's funny that I stumbled across this video. A few days ago, i was watching an episodes of recess, and two subtle scenes made me laugh, and the story plot was good, and i couldn't help but think, "Now i remember why this show is great!" Grim adventures of Billy and mandy is goated too.
Twas 2 weeks before fringmas and before the marathon
Not a meme was stirring
Not even Hugh Neutron
As we wait for 25 more classics this holiday year
The fringe will bring us another wonderful cheer
Man I was a navy brat and we moved a lot, so pretty much everything I watched for a long time was on dvds, I had two for this show, one with some of the epiosdes and the other with the first movie, love this show.
My childhood show, Recess, is the best 90s Disney cartoon. I especially like T.J., the leader of Third Street Elementary School.
I think that the design for the young version of Dr. Vegapunk from the One Piece Anime looks like Principal Prickley redrawn in an anime style
Yes I do remember it is one of my Top 3 favorite cartoons of all time.
The characters in this show were so well-written! Truly a classic every kid should watch!
Recess and the Weekenders were this perfect little duo of what we wanted as kids
My favorite episode was the dodgeball one... Seeing Gus get to shine for once was really special!
