Just want to point out something that you might not have noticed: On a Fender Jazzmaster, the guitar has 2 circuits, a rhythm and lead. On the lead one, you can switch between the neck and bridge pickup but you can’t do this on the rhythm circuit. During the first solo, the guitar is pretty low and muted. This is because he didn’t switch to the lead circuit. Gene leans in at 0:48, trying to switch Jerry to the bridge pickup but this doesn’t work since he is on the rhythm circuit. During the second solo, he switches and that is why the sound is a lot louder and clearer. This is all assumption of course, but I’ve made the mistake of not switching. Still, Jerry does a great job on guitar!
Jerry Lee Merritt was the lead guitarist, I think Gene's last. When Gene left Japan a day early Jerry took his place and played as Gene and no one knew. He always laughed about that. I met and worked with Jerry in his Ghost Town Recording Studio in Yakima, Wa a few years back. If you do a search for him you can see him in later years doing a show in England. He passed away a few years back. He wrot 'SheShe Little Sheila' for Gene and I think he has it here on youtube.
Totally agree. This was thought to be pretty far 'out there', but in reality it was harmless, even virtuous by todays standards. It was an innocent, fun time! I miss these times--I was just a kid but still remember it fondly.
Johnny Meeks on guitar? The "Town Hall Party", CA's largest country barndance, held at the Town Hall in Compton. It drew over 2,800 paid admissions Fri/Sats--room for 1,200 dancers. On 8:30-9:30pm on NBC network. Gene was on Oct. 25, '58, July 25 & Nov. 7, '59. Played: Be-Bop-A-Lula, High Blood Pressure, Rip It Up, Dance To The Bop, You Win Again, For Your Precious Love, Rocky Road Blues, Pretty Pearly, High School Confidential, Over The Rainbow, Roll Over Beethoven & She She Little Sheila.
I had the distinct honor of growing up with that music. I saw Buddy Holly in Milwaukee just before his plane crash. Three friends all taken before their time, Gene, Buddy & Eddie Cochran.
Man I can`t get enough of this vid, I must have watched it a million times already, it`s just incredible... there`s no other way to describe it. The band setup is so simple yet they get this amazing groove going. It`s true rock and roll in every sense of the word played as good as it can get. Maybe the Rock and Roll hall of fame should study this and good before they elect one more idiot who has absolutely nothing to do with R&R like Madonna.
my grandma is the one in the pretty dress in the back ground she, my dad and my grandpa were close friends w/ Gene she was a REALLY tallented singer to
favourited! loving his expressions throughout the vid. He loved this song and he really loves that guitar/ist. This is the second or third time I've watched a video of him turning to watch the guitarist when he's not busy singing. So lovely
Gene is great singer like all the other great siger like eddie cochran, marty wilde, jeff fury, joe brown, elvis presley, duane eddy, and eddy cochran, Vince Taylor and so many others great singers .Thank you for posting gene vincents music and video,s
WOW! "She, She Little Sheila" is a damn great song. Wish I had a uncle who played w/Vincent or any else of the great originators. The real cool thing about Merrit is that he doesn't look like a flashy rockn'roller BUT he IS!
hey yeah. i am twenty... and found this kind of music this year again. I really love it more then every other music i listen to. As Snickers said... it is on a far higher level than today's music! Twist on everybody!
genial tanto la música como el temazo del brujo negro. super5 points. great both music and picutes of the black sorcerer.. 5 super ponts. best regards from Eddie Catman and the Howlin' Boppers
Yeah that's a real sad story. I say Gone but not forgotten. I kinda grew up with this music too, my father just couldn't listen to anything else when I was young. So I got infected with the rock 'n roll virus at young age.
.62 oui c'est l'année ,ou j'ai vu Gégène à Nantes , j'avais 15,piges...là j'ai compris ce que "enter en transe" signifiait , on ne snifait pas en ce milieu du xxème siècle ...lol
Hmm...Merrit the last. Looking at my sources it says last Blue Caps # 6 was Johnny Meeks at gtr, Cliff Simmons pno, Grady Owen bs, Clyde Pennington dms and Jackie Kelso sax. Sometime in mid November '58 Gene did a bunk (owing 3 weeks of pay to the group), leaving them stranded in L.A. without transport, instruments or money. The MU withdrew Gene's card and membership and he allegedly fled to Alaska. Meeks later played with the Champs. In '72, bs w/Michael Nesmith and later w/Merle Haggard.
Jimmy Preston,Big Joe Turner,Cochran,E.V.Craddock,Holley,Presley,Berry,J.L.Lewis,Richard it was all fantastic and will never die! The Beatles heard this and wanted to be just like all the other rockers. Yeah they took it to another level but that was also the technolgy and the drugs got better! My all time fav was always Ray Charles. But even if you listen to the earliest Hank Williams or the Delta blues. It's all just 12bar rythm&blues. I read once Lennon kissed J.L.Lewis foot when they met?R&R
Totally unique both in music and style. If Putin had found this genius maybe he might have thought "Hey! This rocknroll business is better than me being an asshole"" To late pal, good music and guys with style will always blow away creeps. RIP Mr Vincent.
Lead guitarist was my friend Jerry Lee Merritt. I think he was Gene's last lead guitarist. Punch up Jerry Lee Merrit and he has a show he performed in England in later years on youtube. He wrote 'She She little Sheila' for Gene and I think you can find Gene singing it here somewhere with Jerry playing lead guitar. Jerry lived in Yakima, Wa. for several years and had Ghost Town Recording studio's outside of Yakima for several years where I met and worked with him. He passed away a few years ago.
its good cause they sounded the same live as they did on record. unlike the shit of today that enhance there music so much they cant do live shows for shiiiit
To me the best version of "Roll Over Beethoven" I have ever heard (and I have heard quite a few)....is the Beatles version with George Harrison doing the double tracked lead vocals....the vocal energy just seemed very high on that recording. Although George's lead guitar playing was not that refined yet....there is something really uplifting about the whole recording.....makes ya want to get up and dance
@@theyrekrnations8990 Berry's is good, and it should, he wrote it, but I like the energy of the George Harrison/Beatles version. The voice is strong due to double tracking and the edge of reverb is just right. Also recording technology had gotten a little better by then.
@@inkey2 I was tryin to be funny but hey I love George Harrison and the Beatles version . In fact they do a great job on Rock and Roll Music by Berry. Then they do Carl Perkins up real good on Honey Dont and Matchbox. But is kinda cool to listen to the original writers do the songs
bellgardens53, you may be right.I just thought Jerry was his last lead guitarist. Not sure if Jerry ever said. Jerrys son is in Nashville the last I heard, hit search for Larry Merritt on youtube and I think you will find him. This is definately Jerry Merritt playing lead guitar on Roll over Beethoven. The last electric I saw him playing was a Fender Strat, not sure what year. Paul
Any emerging art shows its intrinsic form worth it first appears --later developments will amplify and distort the original -- Chuck Berry / Gene Vincent sprove that in this iconic performance. YT has done some good and some harm to the culture---bringing clip to this "public" is on the good side of the their ledger.
Chuck Berry wrote this song but in the USA of the time it was not clean to mention that a black rock artist wrote This killer Rock song and many other. John Lennon Said You could call rock and roll Chuck Berry, I agree.
Gene Vincent : You are simply superb as a Rock and Roll singer. We will always remember you Gene !
Hell yeah this music lives forever.
I'm am only twenty three years old but I think this music is way better than today's music.
A true classic from another vastly underated artist
God Bless this legend and underrated singer and musician!
J'adore le rock n' roll des années 60
I can appreciate their unique take on that Berry classic . Really cool solos .
God bless him in rock n' roll heaven ,,,,, !!!! our dear Gene !!!

That makes perfect sense. The tonal differences on the first and second solo are distinct.

Damn right my friend. Quality always shines through the years.
That`s the best version I ever heard of that song, it`s like a jet at cruising altitude.
Well, it brought memories of my Dad singing it in the late 50s through the 60s. It certainly helped me to learn new licks on the guitar.
Never really liked this song too much before but I'd never heard Gene singing until now! Wow, what a great feel. He made it his own there....
indeed!
This Jungle Music is a Menace to today's youth! Still! Cool, daddyoh!

They’re doing the rythem correct. Chucks songs all have different break neck rythem.,,.. the chord switching in Beethoven .,,.makes it easier to get.
