    Yes, the old Olympic archery format was 90 meters, 70 meters using a 120 centimeter target and 50 meters, 30 meters using a 80 centimeter target. If you were fortunate enough to be selected for the U.S. Olympic archery program you would be participating in an intensive program both physical and mental. The archer may be shooting 300 to 400 arrows a day, 6 days a week. By the way South Korea dominates in Olympic archery. It is their national sport. The South Korean woman broke the world record at the 2024 Olympics shooting 694 points out of a possible 720 points at 70 meters, out scoring ALL the men.

    In the’96 Olympics, the S.Korean women had a sudden death shoot for the gold against the Japanese. The 70m target had a button camera in the very center. I was watching the live feed in the broadcast center as the event happened. The S.Korean archer released the arrow that you could see rise and and then approaching the target, then began dropping, and hit the camera breaking it!
    NBC never broadcast it, and only passingly mentioned the 2hour long shoot off. I’ve never watched or kept up with the olympics since. I own a bow used in the ‘68 Olympics, took first place in the BSA jr. Olympics in h.s….

    The biggest problem i the weight of the arows. 700gr on 70 meters is crazy. From my experience I know. That was one time I took my hunting set up (arows 600 gr) to the 3D competition. There was plenty of targets att 25 to 35 yards and my poit on distance is 20. I had to aim over the targets the whole time and that wasnt good. Next time I took my 40 # bow and 350 gr. Arrows and I won first place. Only becouse of my poit on was now 30 yards. What I want to say is that the pro olympic shooters have very light arrows and extreme flat trajectory which makes it all different. They are still good, no doubt on that. I used to coach target archery- the key is "repeatability of your action" with the equipment you use. You know the distance, you can measure the wind and you get sighter arrows to adjust your sights at the start. That's when the mental game comes in to precicely repeat your the six dozen arrows you are going to send to the target, where you have to maintain your concentration.

    Don't forget, my friend, that Olympic archers are using sights and stabilizer bars that keep the bow steady. I've been practicing with a longbow, and I'm not very good, but when I used my cousin's compound bow; I was hitting bullseyes left and right.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Maybe you shouldn't jump to rash conclusions. You weren't consistently hitting bullseyes from 230 feet away. The sights are there so they can actually see where their shots are landing and make tiny adjustments... fractions of an inch can separate 1st and last places. Unlike you, to be selected, they have to be able to repeatedly hit it many dozens of times in a row, day in, day out. The Stabilisation is just a tool that helps them to keep the incredible consistency over long periods and many shots. Just like carpenters and engineers use tools to keep things consistent.

    Olympic archers dont shoot from 90m anymore.
    70 m is the distance now.
    They shoot their whole life from youth classes from this one known distance. With a sight. And a low anchor, that enables them to look through riser and not point over the target.
    Every Olympic archer that tried trad shooting said that it is much harder.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Rubbish. No, they don't all train from a young age, at just one distance and with sights etc. That may happen in certain countries, but most are simply people who showed talent in general archery, and chose to train in the Olympic style, whatever age they were. They gain recognition through organised competitions, and a committee will choose the best ones they can find for each discipline. Many countries don't have state sponsored training schemes for most sports. There are generally no age restrictions on Olympic athletes... one of the Turkish duo that took silver in 10m target pistol was 51 years old.

    The real question is could they hang with the hunters they shoot in a perfect environment. We shoot elevated with branches in our sight. did your target move and now it’s a quarter away shot? Is it snowing? Making distance adjustments. Low light. I can keep going. It is clear who is better. I don’t look down on them. It’s just completely different your hunting an animal. Love to a them be accurate when buck fever hits them.

    • @another3997
      @another3997 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      People love to think they're skills are better and harder to master than everyone else's. 🤣 But their targets are small, and very far away. 70M is 229.66 feet. They use tools to help with consistency, just like most people use the best equipment they can afford for the task at hand. But the tools don't give them the talent. And they don't just shoot two or three times a day and hope to hit a target. To be selected, they have to be able to hit that tiny target consistently, many, many times in succession no matter what, day in day out. It's extremely unlikely that most archers or bow hunters would be good enough to qualify for the Olympics no matter how much they practiced. Olympic archers are just excellent archers, and given the same amount of practice as you have in bow hunting, they would be excellent at that too... assuming they don't mind hunting animals for fun etc.

    As many others said these are 2 different types of shooting.
    The olympic bow is set up to be as accurate as possible at that 70m distance.
    But try taking that bow setup in the woods for hunting and you will see how unwieldy it is. It is fine for stationary shooting on even ground in a known distance.
    Try getting it up to target in confined space where you have to guess the range and have more or less snapshot and it will fail miserably.
    A friend of mine once wanted to join me on a 3D round but insisted on carrying his olympic setup.
    He was not really happy after 3 or 4 targets carrying all that weight and constantly adjusting his sight, and finding spots to stand where is stabilizers would not brush at branches.

      @@beforetheecho No harm done. It was a funny video.
      Just wanted to add a bit to the video.
      There are different bows for different roles and ways of shooting.
      It is why in traditional archery contests where long ranges are shot with simple bows, like in Buthan or Korea, it is normally enough to hit the target and not hit the bullseye. Shootign 100m+ without any sights and stabilizers is a challenge in itself (in Korean traditional archery you have to hit a 2mx2.5m target that is 145m away) so no need to add additional difficulty to it.
      Have fun at what you are doing is the important part.

    good try, but the Olympic archers use super light bows in a similar draw weight, (I think its 48 for men and 33 for women) they are finely tuned with massive stabilizers, extended sights that probably weigh half of what the average re curve hunting bow weighs, the arrows super are super thin and only weigh about 10 grains or less without the tip, maybe 400-500 grains with the tip. they practice on average 8 plus hours a day 6-7 days a week for months and years on end. I shot in a local archery league 40 years ago. it was mostly hunters with compound bows in an indoor 20 yard range with 10 ring paper targets. it was 2 man teams but we still competed against each other. one year there was a couple guys that joined the league, one had actually been to the 1984 olympics that year and won a bronze, the other was training for the 88 olympics with the fist guy as his coach. they decided they would join the league for fun to break the monotony of their normal practice routine. the leagues only lasted 8 weeks one night a week. they were nice guys but a little cocky and even told several people "this will be easy"
    at the end of the league the bronze medalist finished 4th and the one training who was being coached by the first guy finished 5th, yours truly won 1st and my partner finished 2nd another bow hunter finished 3rd.
    Have that olympic archer come and pick up a hunters re curve without stabilizers and extended sights and heavier arrows and he wouldnt do any better than you. if you shot that same bow you used here even 3-4 hours a day 3-4 times a week for 6-8 weeks I bet you would be consistently hitting the 10 ring

You’re not using a clicker (draw length check) and you’re gripping the bow rather then just pushing it these are the critical accuracy factors. Sights are irrelevant given in Olympic archery magnification and electronics are banned also no front sights. Apparently one gold medal winner was legally blind.
    It’s a sport of execution not aiming.

Hand an Olympian a hunting bow, stick him a tree for five hours in cold weather, limit his motion to what a deer will let him get away with, and add some buck fever. He is going to screw up some 20 yard shots. Likewise, give an experienced bow hunter a target rig, a target at range, and an audience watching, and he won't be much better than a newbie.

    As an avid archery Hunter, really what's the point of recurve archery Olympics?? You want to be the best at a sport that is so antique it serves no function in the real world?
    Kind of like I can light the most candles in an hour, after all, that's how I lit their homes 1,000 years ago......
    Recurve archery will be the exact same thing as muzzleloading with a smoothbore flintlock for a shooting competition. -- don't think I've seen that one.

    ah... but can an Olympic recurve archer kill a deer in the forest with one shot from a non-predetermined distance? Love to see them try to drag on of those tricked out bows through the woods and sneak up on a deer. Anyone else think 3D barebow would be an awesome Olympic event? Time it and make the course a few kms long hiking over terrain.

    The only fair comparison would be to go to an Olympic range with an Olympic shooter and each shoot the others' equipment. I bet your abilities with superior equipment meant for that purpose you would do well. It would also humble the Olympic shooter with more primitive equipment.

    What is up with your stance? I have only seen horse archers depicted firing that way in movies and historical media. It seems to me that the way you were shooting would work well for short range accuracy, but a more traditional stance would be better for long range. I'm no expert though, self taught archer, started shooting before the internet was big. I have learned more technical info since, but live in town so I haven't shot in years 😢

    what a stupdi camparison, it isn't even a real comparison ... so... yeah you don't miss a 30 inch target at 70/90m... olympic archers don't miss an area off 3-5 inches most time at that distance.
    great achievement to hit that targets, yeah, but nothing to do with "keep up" .. and also bowhunting is shit... has nothing to do with hunting principles/huntsmanship.... even a perfect shot does not kill the deer at once, compared to a bullet... onyl because you're allowed to do it, doesn't make it great ...

    You are an “archer”. Bare basic bow and some arrows. Those Olympic shooters are ….. well I’m not sure. But I know they use a hell of a lot more junk than just a bow. Sights, stabilizers, on and on and on.
    I’d like to see one of those rigs taken whitetail hunting in the woods. It wouldn’t be pretty.
    I respect “your” ability. And their observation of ballistics.
    When I bow hunt I don’t look for anything beyond 50 yards, and that’s with a crossbow. Back when I could still hold a bow with my left hand it wasn’t a lot different other than I was looking to be inside of that 50 yard range. Shots outside of fifty yards the clean kill isn’t realistic so shouldn’t even be considered.
    To me Olympic archery is at best nothing more than a display. It’s not practical, certainly not ethical (for hunting). So really pointless.

    • @danabean4408

      It’s an Olympic Competition. Pole Vaulting is also pointless, but it is an example of maximizing a very particular form of human endeavor . Just because you find it “pointless“ doesn’t mean that it isn’t an amazing thing to see and amazing that people can get so good at it. Just as it is amazing that people can be good at bow hunting. Some would argue that is a pointless exercise in a world with supermarkets. We are free to disagree, but that doesn’t make their point of view invalid, just different than our own. Tolerance and respect. . .
