    This chapter from our 2004 DVD captures powerful hurricane Ivan as we observed it in Gulf Shores, Alabama. The back story is that we had taken our Green Isuzu Rodeo, the first "chase vehicle" of ours, and turned it in to a bright yellow un-manned drone. The idea was to put it in a big hurricane, loaded with weather instruments and cameras, and allow it to record the worst while we went somewhere far safer. The Isuszu has been through many hurricanes and tropical storms in its six years of use but Ivan would be its last mission. The project was a success and led to our work in subsquent years in hurricanes such as Katrina, Rita, Wilma and Ike.

    I'm a power lineman from N.C. i was in gulf shores Ala.the day after to help put power back on.We were there for 2 months because ivan took all poles and lines and threw them in the ocean.Plus the storm surge was so high it wiped out a substation completely was nothin left but a big square fence.But after 2 months we got all power on and the people of gulf shores treated us very good

      @jtstacey83 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it took near a year to get all the power issues resolved. We were without power for two weeks and like I said before the power would come and go for nearly a year anytime we had a moderate storm in the area.

    It’s been 16 years since Ivan hit now. I was in the 3rd grade and we stayed with my grandparents. We lived about an hour away from Mobile. We went I think 2 weeks without power. My cousins and I would make “forts” in the woods by cleaning out small patches. I remember it being hot. I remember them rationing MREs at our local school before the storm. Praying for those in the path of Hurricane Laura tonight.

    You mentioned in the video that the zoo, had lost several animals. To correct this, the zoo under direction of Patti and David Hall had been completely evacuated, all but Chuckie the Alligator. The zoo, which was Animal Planet, The Little Zoo that Could, was evacuated 2 mores after this due to 2 more hurricanes.

    I remember going on a trip to gulf shores for a weekend camping trip about a year after Ivan, and everything up and down the coast was still pretty messed up. We ended up all the way down in Pensacola before we found a suitable place, which ended up just being sleeping on the old bridge pier while fishing.

    In PC, we knew it was coming. We just don't freak out about it.
    Ivan was a great storm for PC though ... we had at least 12 hours of sustained gale force winds, which we didn't get in some other notable storms such as Eloise and Opal. Ivan was a huge storm, a memorable storm ... even though PC wasn't in its direct landfall. I enjoyed the heck out of it! :-) But, it did a number on Pensacola.

    • @TombstoneChris
      @TombstoneChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah you are telling me cuz I am in Pensacola and it pretty much destroyed this city. Every single roof had damage. The power was out anywhere from 2 weeks to two months depending on where you were were. There was no gasoline for your vehicle if you didn't stock up because they couldn't get here to deliver it. and when they did have gas the lines were so long you would sit in them for hours on end in the incredible heat. Grocery stores could not get shipments in. You had to rely on MRE. I mean it was like an apocalypse. At night you literally had to have some type of weapon near cuz it was pitch-black and people were looting. It was insane.

  • @TombstoneChris
    @TombstoneChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Right here in Pensacola. The storm was supposed to make landfall I believe in Mobileb and it took that turn and came and made a direct landfall here in Pensacola. I'll never forget that night as long as I live. The sound of that wind the sheer horror in the howl, and watching a huge oak tree swaying back and forth not knowing if it's going to snap and come through your house. I was 22. And you know I was highly inebriated because what else are you going to do no power nothing but candles and flashlights and a battery-powered radio. But even though was in that state I still won't forget. 15 year anniversary is coming up in 12 days. I can't believe it's been that long.

    Crazy. Out of the 4 hurricanes that hit the Florida in 2004, Ivan doesn't seem as bad as Charley,Frances,or Jeanne. However, I know this is Alabama so in total of the 2004 hurricanes in the US, Ivan seems to be pretty tied with Charley but it might look even worse. I don't know but it seems that the Northern gulf belt tends to actually get hit a bit worse than down here in the Florida Pennisula.

The RM Young anemometer is sitting on the orange pole next to the house, I just don't have the money to replace the wiring and buy a hook up for it. My family was living on Hwy 98 in Navarre Florida at the time Ivan happened.
    The fire Department and Police department order everyone that was within a mile from the beach to manualary evacuate we went to Milton Florida to stay with some friends we put the cats in a building with the washer and dryer and water heater a tree took the buildings roof out so we put the 5 cats in the room that we were going to stay in that was better for them.
    My 2 Young boys at the time were in intermediate school.
    The school had to be relocated due to Ivan taking the walls of the school and destroying the building.
    It was like a bomb went off trees power lines poles houses gone yes it was almost 3 months till we got power.
    Don't never underestimate the power of a hurricane or storm

    Mobile area? I think it was a high cat 3 when it came on land.

    • @TombstoneChris
      @TombstoneChris 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was a category 4 and does it was nearing landfall which was supposed to happen in Mobile it took a turn and made a direct hit in Pensacola as a category three. But it was a high-end category 3. Not really much difference between that and a four. I'll never forget walking outside in the dead of night no power pitch black when the eye wall was over Pensacola. You could see all the stars so perfectly and the Moon. And then boom. the sky fell out again and it was just amazing the sound of that wind something you just can't forget.

      because that part of the country is populated by millionaires.

    • @Vector_Ze
      @Vector_Ze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They're not all millionaires. I'm not. But, you have to be stinking Trump rich to own beach front property. And the pitiful thing is, those rich bastards just collect insurance which everyone in the state pays for, and rebuild. It's no big deal for them, but everyone else in the state shoulders the cost for the rich ass bastards.

      Kyle - I do not think I ever posted my Jeanne segment on TH-cam. I will digitize it soon and put it up. Thanks for asking - I was in that one as well at the end of the string of landfalls of the 2004 season. I will work on this over the next few days. Thanks for asking.
