THIS is what killed Star Wars Outlaws

- Star Wars Outlaws was not the cash cow Ubisoft hoped it would be. In this video, I break down every aspect of the game's mechanics to reveal a gorgeous open-world that offers shallow gameplay, lacking many basic mechanics that even older game had. All this, while providing sparse innovations that would enable a player to truly play the game their own way.
I've been waiting for a deeper sale on this one, while also hoping that the recent updates fixed most of the glaring issues... but damn!
You've done an incredible job documenting how flawed the core game's design and mechanics are, while also providing good constructive feedback as to how the game could be way better than it is, had better decisions been made during development. The visual editing is top notch as well. 👌
Thank you, sir. I worked on this for 3 months. Glad you liked it.
Damn. I didn't realize it was this bad. Poor game needed longer to cook.
Keep up the good work my friend 🎉. Very well presented. Some of these aspects of the game quest design have been thoroughly normalized, and general mantling is difficult to find in most open world games.. until people are able to be awakened out of their apathy by a game that does all the genuine improvements discussed in the video in a superlative way that simply makes other games FEEL like downgrades, I'm afraid they'll still be here to stay.
I honestly have the feeling that on rail climing was created to hide loading screens on console games, yet devs didn´t get the memo and though it was an actual gameplay mechanich people were craving for. And thus every triple A third person has to try to chog it into our thoaths, cause that´s how out of touch the top devs and CEOs ordering them around actually are from their costumers.
LOL - I love the idea that we’re in a universe where a crutch to hide asset loading became a “feature” due to a misunderstanding.
Every minute of this video is worth it. I...can... not.. believe the design decisions Ubisoft CHOSE for this game. I heard it was bad, but MediaKit really lets me know just HOW bad this game design is. Unbelievable!
i usually get bored of this sort videos but this is different, well done video you point out the good (which is not much) and you point out the bad and then you gave them more then one idea to fix it.
everything explain well and the video editing with all the animation was the cherry on the top.
there is one thing i think every game that use it should do it better not just Star Wars Outlaws (the grappling hook) even a good game like Ghost of Tsushima use it the same way you explain it in the video, i hope it well better in AC shadows and ghost of yotei.
I love your videos, I hope you continue until you become famous
Wow! Excellent review! Well done! Excellent narration! Great graphics! You've got a great radio voice! As I watched I found myself repeatedly saying, "Yes! That's exactly what I thought." Numerous times the restricted boundaries of a mission nearly got me killed. Early on in the game I stumbled upon an Imperial facility and decided to have some fun. No mission! I just snuck through stealing credits, hacking computers, gathering resources, and stealth attacking random stormtroopers. When I got a contract to the same base, I thought, "Easy peasy, I've already cased the joint. No problemo!" I needed to sneak past a guard station, so I tried crossing the road to stay out of their eyesight. Suddenly everything went gray, and a flashing red message warned me to return to the game. Damn! They virtually forced me into the line of fire! So, I just ran like a nocturnal flying mammal out of the infernal nether regions! Thankfully, I was able to make it to cover before the little yellow question marks and eyeballs showed up. But in space how do I even know where the mission area is when all I see are stars? One of the things I so enjoyed in Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West was the ability to enter a rebel base from so many different angles and the ability to flee when overpowered and outgunned. Dittos on space exploration and battles. I too turned down the space contracts. Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed infiltrating Imp bases. Very gratifying. And, like you, I did NOT enjoy the speeder bike. Just ended up using fast travel as much as possible. I also wish there were more worlds, and that the existing ones were more expansive. As a Starwars fan I geeked out on Tatooine. Thankfully, Tatooine was fairly expansive. I did like earning the different syndicate outfits. Overall, I did enjoy myself and the game gave me a great Starwars vibe. The worlds had their quaint beauty, but again, not nearly as breathtaking as the Horizon games. Sadly, the blaster was so weak, that I found it more advantageous to stealth drop the enemies; one to two pops on the head and they were out for good. But I had to blast enemies numerous times to kill them. So, my blaster became my "if all else fails" go to. My game was a gift, so no complaints about the price. And I am glad that I experienced it. Thanks again! I thoroughly enjoyed your review.
I'm glad you liked Star Wars Outlaws, as did I, but it also frustrated me so much. Thanks for your positive and thorough feedback.
I place the Horizon games in my personal top 5 of all time. I did a video on the combat of Horizon Zero Dawn.

I'm 100% with you man. I remember first playing, standing over a 74Z and sighing.
I was watching this game for a year leading up to its release… I waited for evidence of drivable vehicles. Why aren't they flexing the drivable vehicles?
all of these points would be awesome for a sequel, which we will probably never get
3:35 same as assassin focus in ac mirage, i don't love it or hate because you can still do everything without.
33:40 same problem with ghost of tsushima quest which i hate because it ruins a lot of good idea to finish the quest.
One more thing i love the video ❤
3 months is a lot and deserve much more viewe
In Mirage (which I have but haven't installed yet), does the ability work in the open or do you have to start in cover. I got the impression that it only worked on unaware enemies. The problem with Star Wars Outlaws is the adrenaline is the only way to fire from the speeder and, on foot, only works during combat.
So Ghost of Tsushima also has bordered quest areas?! I was thinking of getting Ghost soon.
Thanks for the ❤
@MediaKitGaming the assassin focus is stealth ability so it's only work if you out of conflict but you need at least one bar of focus (adrenaline) to work.
I love how Kay keeps saying "that worked" as if adrenaline was some kind of tool and not her doing it 😂
Totes!
Thanks for saving me money. I was just about to buy the game when I decided to look for reviews. Made my decision within like 5 minutes into your video and kept watching just to see how bad it was. You've got a new fan!
It's worth pointing out... part of my script, I ended up editing out, was a part where I pointed out that there is a large collection of Outlaws fans on Reddit who basically start their posts with “glad I didn't listen to the reviews”, all claiming that they love the game.
Your videos are REALLY well produced!
The 'find the thing in the zone' mechanic could be cool if there were clues and could ask around. A quest to speak to Plaqu the droid dealer could send you to a small village with a variety of shops, one of has lots of dismantled droids and a sign reading 'Plaqu's Repair' if you get lost in town some way to ask others "Hey, do you know where this person is?" and get pointed in the right direction.
💯% - Make it a puzzle, or a mystery, or any kind of game out of it! Something I can solve and feel smart about because I figured it out. I yearn for the game where, if I'm lost, I can just ask ANY NPC questions about their neighborhood or region and get answers because they would know things about their home.
@@MediaKitGaming For immersive experiences have you played the ioi hitman reboot games? Play on master with little hud and turn off the quest assist stuff. Then go in and stumble across conversations and make observations.
@@checkmate058 I played a little HM Absolution a few years ago. Never finished it. I didn't like the checklist style of progression... you did the hit, now do it 5 more times in different ways. Not criticizing it. Just not my thing.
@@MediaKitGaming yeah, i don't really do the checklist stuff in the newer World Of Assassination trilogy games. I like to go in blind and with all the helper stuff off, use observations, deduction, listening, exploration to figure stuff out. Instead of leading with the checklist, I let the checklist follow my gameplay as little achievements for figuring stuff out.
This only works if you go into settings and HIDE the checklist BEFORE playing the level. The checklists spoil the discovery be telling you that you can kill the target with a falling car before you even try.
@@checkmate058 That seems like a great way to play. Very immersive. I'll keep that in mind if I ever get the chance.
Well done video covering the aspects of the game. And its glaring flaws holding it back. I recently finished the game myself. Its not terrible, Just average overall. Could of been great with more fleshed out mechanics and time.
I'm right there with you. Didn't hate it. But it didn't innovate much and lacks features older Ubisoft games have had.
40:46 yes developers are dumbing down games for kids. It sucks cuz there's no challenge
I doubt it, the majority of gamers are in their 30s and 40s now. They're probably dumbing it down for us old fucks.
This was such a high quality video, not sure why your views are quite so low. I was expected many 100k's...Great effort hope it picks up!
Thanks. Views has a lot more to do with popularity than quality. And the Outlaws iron was hot 6 months ago. Wa'da'ya' gonna do? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It's the video I wanted to make.
I still think the first open-world Star Wars game should have been a bounty hunter game. In my opinion, it would have opened up so much character customization, upgrades, story paths, consequences, and places to explore. I'll play this game once it is on a deep-deep sale.
A bounty hunter game would rock! But, IMO, the concept isn't what failed this game… bounty hunter vs scoundrel… doesn't actually matter. It was their approach to gameplay. If this team had made a bounty hunter game instead, we'd just have a disappointing bounty hunter game. No concept is so good that it can't be sunk by poor execution. No concept is so bland that it can't be saved with creative gameplay.
The reason for one speeder is the no doubt upcoming speeder dlc that you will have to pay for
As a new game dev... i need more of your videos 😂😂
Fantastic video breakdown. Did you like Jedi survivor?
I didn't like Fallen Order so I passed on Survivor. Now, not liking a game is not the same as thinking it's bad. I just didn't jive with it. IMO, no game has ever made lightsaber combat work. The lightsaber is kinda OP. It melts through flesh and steel, yet in games it just subtracts HP like every other weapon. I don't like Souls mechanics, where resting respawns the world. It feels artificial and gamey. It breaks immersion. I didn't like traversal in Fallen Order. Returning to old places and navigating the labyrinthine levels was a chore. Climbing on the AT-AT was the same linear climbing garbage I called Outlaws out for. And there were a lot of pointless crates doling out ponchos and colored saber cosmetics. I didn't like the undead or resurrected or witches… but I'm told they are part of some extended universe… still don't like it. It doesn't feel Star Wars to me. I thought the Vader appearance at the end was cheesy. Open worlds are much more my thing.
This is the game that broke me, both for Star Wars and Ubisoft. Neither will get launch day money from me ever again.
For me it was Cyberpunk 2077. But it affected all games. Never preorder. Always check reviews.
@@MediaKitGaming i never played Cyberpunk 2077 but i thought it was a good game.
great video by the way.
Finally started the game a few days ago, about 12 hours in and i gotta say I like it 👌. I guess all the trash talk on this game has lower the expectations for me. My only few gripes so far are the speeder being janky to drive, especially when crashing into a boulder or other speeder. Sometimes I randomly get arrested when i am in a mission or running from empire. And Kay is a BORING character.
I wish she were more confident. Maybe a little more competent. She comes across as someone who mostly stumbles to success. Her personality doesn't match the badassery of her actions. I think they tried to make her too much like a normal person. I hate how she stammers through all her lies - like it's some joke between the writers and players… “Get it? She's lying. And she's bad at it. And they're still falling for it.” SMH. Yeah, I got arrested a few times when I thought I was entering a firefight. Not a fan of that. As I said toward the end of my video, it's not a bad game. And I'm happy for anyone who finds a game they like. Love to hear your final thoughts when you're done. I'm doing a second playthrough now where the factions can F- off. When given a choice I'll always favor the Crimson Dawn. I've already bottomed out with the Pykes, and I refuse to do any of the reputation-building jobs/gigs.
I don’t know how this guy can say that horizon has revolutionary combat and then shit on this game 😂
It's on sale for 42usd. Is it worth this price lol
Day 1 gameplay dlc was too far for me. Hopefully it will come to ps+ because they will get no more money from me.
"overused jedi" - yeah, 4 series in like 30 years is soooo overused. I don't think I need to watch further.
Excellent VIDEO FACTS! Oh, and a *female with the power of a Mike Tyson Knockout Punch LMAO!!
Through a helmet, no less. Whaaaaa? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. If they'd just given her a melee weapon like a taser, or sleep drug injector, or brass knuckles, maybe put that grapple to more creative use or heck... some self-defense training. Make her badass in some way. It would have made the combat so much more interesting.
you should stop buying triple A games
I think we are up to quadruple A games now, also according to Ubisoft.
I bought Star Wars Outlaws precisely because I wanted to make a video about it. Without this channel, it would probably still be on my waitlist. I knew from the reviews that it didn't have drivable vehicles, that it dropped guns, and you couldn't shoot from the speeder. Other issues, like the bordered mission areas, were a complete surprise to me after I started playing it. But as indicated at the beginning of this video, I've enjoyed many past Ubisoft games.
@@MediaKitGaming buying a game just to make a negative video is always a bad idea
What makes you say that?
@@MediaKitGaming stop spreading negativity and start spreading positivity.
star wars and Ubisoft care more about profits than quality, not worth their time
Basically all the criticism is fair but the space combat if you are gonna say it's bad you need to unlock the mechanics and try it that before saying it bad, the space combat gets better once you unlock the mechanics, look I'm not saying it's great and you aren't far off, but if you are gonna say to the devs "it's parts of the job" then you need to be held to the same standard, to review and ACCURATELY describe the problems of this game you need to use the mechanics it's "PART OF THE JOB" double standard my guy, and I'm inclined to agree with you on a lot of what you have to say BUT you need to be held to the same standards you hold others to.
No, “my guy”. I unlocked all ship mechanics except for the 2 I mentioned. 1) a dodge that dodges wider than the default & 2) a “top roll maneuver” that positions the trailblazer behind pursuers. None of my criticisms were about not being able to dodge wider or about difficulty trading places with enemies at the rear. That second one BTW, would only hurt the game's case, as it does not need yet another mechanic that does the work for the player. A free “press-this-button to place targets directly in front of your forward-locked guns.”
My complaints were about basic maneuverability, strafing, reverse, move up & down on the Y axis. Also a player-amiable turret, and scenarios that made sense for a small freighter: hiding in capital ship blind spots, weaving space obstacles to lose attackers, and flying inside capital ships. But go ahead, make the case that those 2 upgrades fix those issues.
I mentioned the 2 locked maneuvers in my script precisely so viewers would have all the information. If a viewer of my video agrees that space combat sucks but, “Wow, those 2 roll maneuvers would make all the difference” then I've provided them the information to reach that conclusion.
@MediaKitGaming I went back and checked your video to be sure, you basically said you can unlock a roll mechanic and "loop dee loop" but you didn't because "fuck your flight simulator" or something like that, still proves my point you didn't bother to unlock the mechanics and use them. Doing that is "part of the job" instead of getting defensive with me just do your job. If you are going to put that expectation on others you need to do it as well, because I have played the game and unlocked those, it's not anything to write home about but it does change combat and that's why it's worth it and I feel can change the results if even a little, regardless if you hold others to your standard of "it's part of the job" I'm just holding you to your standard and if you don't like that, well you have yourself to blame. Also "my guy" 😂 bro calm down 😂😂 your defensiveness is showing 🎉
Great review otherwise and I really like a lot of the suggestions you had to make the game better and I wish Ubisoft would have done something else besides what it did. Thanks for getting back to me
Cheers 🎉
@@matthewwebster3143 Well, you kinda took the wind out of my sails with your last paragraph. Funny how being kind can redirect an exchange. So now I have to rewrite everything I just wrote… with a different tone. Your compliment is kindly received.
To your point: Your thesis is: I cannot have an opinion on the game unless I've unlocked and used every feature. Respectfully, I reject this assertion. Few if any reviewers 100% a game before opining on it. We don't expect them to, and I don't hold myself to that standard either. I well and truly played most of the game. I passed on multiple sidequests and completed many others. I didn't unearth every hidden crate but found quite a few. Do those also invalidate my position?
I maintain that my criticisms of the space combat are legit, and by not sampling 2 flight features, which the game explained how they worked, does not invalidate my arguments. I judged that they would not change combat enough to sway my conclusions. At no point did I claim I would review every feature. Adding to my defense, is your own experience with those features which you described as “not anything to write home about.” If, as you say, they “change the results [of space combat] if even a little” well, it just reinforces my position that unlocking them was not an important part of judging the space combat.
Yes, I was being defensive. That's what follows an accusation. I can accept the accusation, ignore it, or defend. I could have been gentler about it, but I didn't feel like your accusation was gentle in nature. I might have misread you. Thank you for sharing your POV and again for your complementary words at the end.
All the best…
I will still play it but no way buying lol
As I stated in my video, it's not a bad game. Just falls short in a lot of ways. It has its fans (see Reddit) who absolutely love it. Who knows, you may end up as one of them.
Hot take: Star Wars outlaws > Jedi Fallen Order
I love a good hot take. I think each game does different things well. But I'm not a big fan of Fallen Order so I think we're agreed.
