I dont want to live in a shack with no running water or electricity, but I do like learning things from people who lived in that time. One because it puts how wealthy we really are, and 2 reminds me of where we could easily end up in the future (for multiple reasons). Hard work is not bad, working hard to be rich is problematic. Aiming for a decent comfortable lifestyle that insulates yourself and your family is good to aim for...being content along the whole journey is key. I try to have these types of conversations with my folks in DR, and they look at me as if I’m crazy. The first thing we need to do is to break them out of the consumerist culture and keeping up with the Joneses. So essentially, it’s task for the social sciences, not economics.
