It's fun seeing Archie Duncan playing several roles in addition to Inspector Lstrade such as Malcolm MacGregan here and Lestrade's cousin Insp. MacDougal in the episode of the Jolly Hangman. Many of the ensemble cast of extras played several characters in different episodes.
One fellow plays in at least 7 episodes and others in four or five, they are such good actors you don’t mind, it makes it fun, it was the 50’s after all 70 years ago. I love the relationship between Watson and Holmes. They are both superb actors.
The series was filmed in Paris, France. THey had to recycle a lot of actors because the number of good English speaking actors in Paris was extremely small.
This episode, with the Lady Beryl episode, is my favorite one. I find Archie Duncan superb, a very fine actor, along with Ronald Howard and H. Marion Crawford. Excellent actors. Thank you, PizzaFlix.

That was decent of Holmes to still be concerned for her health after she fainted, and Mr. McGregor to let her rest in one of his rooms after what she did.
Yes, Nigel Bruce (Basil Rathbone's Watson) was far too much of a bumbling buffoon to be an ex-Army surgeon. Crawford is more resembling of Doyle's Watson.
My grandma does that. Asks obvious questions with already clear answers. I think it's just a way of old speech to encourage the conversation recipient to speak. It's actually respectful of their perspective in inquiring elaboration. Stating curiosity in the obvious is a method of showing interest.

@@jessicabarber4495 it just seems to me that in a lot of those old Sherlock Holmes television shows that if they were American they always had a strong Texan accent
Some of these episodes are a little too "Scooby-doo" for my taste. I was half expecting the guy to say at the end, "And I would've gotten away with it, if it wasn't for those meddling kids!"
SPOILER ALERT: . . The ending was not well done. Were she the ghost, she'd have enabled MacGregor to find the "treasure" that the castle portrait would have no need of sale. The "ghost" would most certainly have known the location of the treasure. But in that case there would be no story. So the ending intended to be mysterious and/or cute, was not well done. I wonder why did they made the actor playing Lestrade play several different characters in the series ...did they seriously believe that the audience wont notice ? The entire series is top notch and the budget spent on this must be very high compared to TV shows of that time period so they could had easily got someone else to play these characters ....The thing is Archie Duncan plays Lestrade so well and like with every well played character the audience begins to associate the actor with the character and its a great shock to the audience's suspension of disbelief when things like this happen .
