i met Beverly Sills backstage at the Ohio Theater here in Columbus when she was on her Farewell Tour in 1979. I've never met an opera star who was more cordial and lovely and willing to take 5 minutes to talk with my date and myself. She was a fantastically talented singer with a voice that only comes around once in 100 years. She was a warm and incredibly gracious human being, who is VERY much missed in the opera world of today!
I heard all the great sopranos in person in my lifetime--Tebaldi, Callas, Nilsson, Sutherland, Caballe--to name a few. Stupendous voices, but opera is theater, and opera requires acting. Sills was the best singing actress. Not only did her voice caress the words, but she also used her body to express the inner world of the character. No one in the opera came close to her as an actress. Great interview. It captures her intelligence, wit, and warmth, but somehow, I can't picture her in a boat fishing.
@@jowr2000 People have different eyes and different ears. I found Callas's acting old-fashioned and corny, and I did not like her use of space. I come to opera with a strong background in theater.
Yes, I saw her many times in concert and opera also, and talked with her and she sent me a great picture signed of her on the postcard in costume. Now her children are deceased also sadly. RIP.
Listen to the way she goes into the top at #340 to #348 I must say I have "Never heard EVER" from anyone a sound that great from any other Coloratura in my life, yes it is my opinion only, and for me my opinion is the most important one of all. If you go to U tube there is so much there for everyone.
I met Sills a few times backstage. She was always gracious, lovely, and eager to laugh! I met her mother and husband too.

Never seen this. Thanks for sharing.

THE BEST ladies and gentleman. Our Bubbles.
There will never be another one like her, ever! She is the QUEEN and always will be forever and ever.
She was so much more interesting as an actress than Sutherland or Caballe
Love Sills, her voice, her beautiful red hair, her joy in singing, her amazing vocal talent and technique.
Wonderful lady
