A total waste of money as a sporting venue. Capacity 55,000. Very rarely reaches a 10th of that for sporting events, unless Premier League football teams come to visit.

@@andreamorganti6628 me too. I think it's because we live in Florence. Living in Florence, and seeing the dome everyday, you get so used to it that going to visit it feels useless. All other things are so close to you, that you don't feel the urgent need to visit them, as you can visit them any time you want, while when you are abroad you feel like you have to visit as much as you can, since it is the only opportunity. As a result, I almost know more about other cities than my city, Florence xD

The University of Illinois Assembly hall was the first edge supported concrete folded plate structure athletic stadium in the world. It clear spans 400 feet (120m) with the edge made of miles of stressed steel cable creating a tension ring. The ring replaces columns and arches used to support conventional domes. The dome weighs an estimated twelve million tons.

How could you have a video about domes and not mention the Astrodome, which was a modern architectural marvel when it opened in 1965??? For bettor or worse, it ushered in a new age of architecture when it came to stadiums. It also made it to where you could have sports in very hot places as air conditioning became available. It also ushered in the invention of artificial turf like Astroturf. It had a pretty big impact.
