How to Propagate Runners & Put Monstera Obliqua 'Peru' on a Moss Pole

  • Today, I chuck my Monstera obliqua 'Peru' plants on a moss pole and propagate their runners with a sphagnum moss propagation box. Check out my eBay store - www.ebay.com.a...
    Connect with me on Instagram - / petevsplant
    If you aren't sure what to do when your Monstera obliqua peru or any other aroid vining plant runs (sends out a runner), today I give you the down low. I use the same method for plants like Monstera esqueleto / epipremnoides.

    I prop in water or perlite. The first time I tried propagating runners I did not pay attention to which end should grow up and had to guess if the cuttings were right side up in my prop box. Now I make sure to cut the leafless stems shorter at the substrate end. Thanks for the videos!

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice one! I think the trick is it's the way those sheathes are facing on the vine. They point upwards. same thing for the growth points if they've popped.

      I put cuttings in water, over the first node. That should work fine, right? Thanks 😁

    Nice one Pete 👍 you got a few wet sticks there that’s for sure lol.
    I learnt from Jan SPG to fill the bottom of the pole with your soil and then put in pot. I’ve done it with plastic back ones and they don’t come out when you hold it up by the pole. I’m sure I’ve seen you put soil in pole with the round poles you have. 😝🌱💚

    I love the lazy pole design from unplantparenthood and gang, I use the same plastic as your potting mat which is drawer liners and put strips of some clear plastic tablecloth around, it's great because I don't have to water more moss than the plant needs, the moistire stays in way longer, getting the plant out is easy as hell, putting it together couldn't be more simple, I can reuse it endlessly and I can easily fill the pole with whatever the fuck I can think of.
    The best part is that omce my plant hits the top I can take the whole thing out, cut it up, repot the top and get it to size up more as I can sell or gift the bottom right away since it's rooted already

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah very clever! I like their design too, i need to try it at some point. Are you in Aus and getting these materials from Bunnings?

    • @single_use_planet_
      @single_use_planet_ ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petevsplants7516 I'm in germany 😅 took me a bit to find sturdy enough plastic for the backing which is why I had to start using thr liners, I looked through multiple hardware stores to find something I could use that was entirely clear but haven't had any luck yet... Maybe bunnings has the right stuff! Everytime you go there they seem to have a bajillion things, our stores just got the extremely rare philodendron prince of orange lmao so bunnings seems like a wonderland
      Really pumped for you to try it! Propping the plant is sooo easy with that method I just love it so much!!

    • @petevsplants7516
      @petevsplants7516  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@single_use_planet_ Yeah it's the same thing here, really hard to find any decent plastic. I've gone to Bunnings and found some thicker sturdier shower curtain plastics can work. Then I've also gone to Officeworks (office supply store) and found some plastic used to A3 documents which can be cut into sheets and used as the lazy pole that Charmaine uses. It's tough though. I probably need to visit a place called Clark Rubber which deals with everything rubber, plastic, etc. for your house, vehicle, etc.

    • @single_use_planet_
      @single_use_planet_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petevsplants7516 that sounds promising! I looked through ikea online but not irl and found the liners in a house supply store in the kitchen area
      I was thinking of using shower curtain but none were the right material and the clear tablecloths are too flimsy to hold up, office supply sounds promising! Excited to see what you can find locally!
