  • This was fun. More relaxed, just talking about the differing aspects of HeroQuest and its lack of what we'd consider the norm for Class and Race based character customization.
And that one Zargon phrase that is beginning to bug me when I see it out in the wild...

In the first edition of "Basic D&D" (1977) had Elf and Dwarf as a class. Class and Race was split later in "Advanced D&D". I think the early convention came from the designers reading LoTR, the only class/profession mentioned in the books was Wizard and Burglar. "Basic D&D" had Fighting-Man, Thief, Wizard, Elf, and Dwarf. "Advanced D&D" was not popular until 2nd edition came out in 1989, so I would not be surprised if the designers of Hero Quest was influenced by the Basic Ed.

The black screen adds a mystical quality to Ash's voice. And makes me contemplate my own mortality.

Lije you said, at the end of the day it’s all about having fun. It’s only within the last year I’ve gotten back into the things I loved as a kid. Things like HeroQuest, d&d and card games like marvel overpower. Want to branch off into things like pathfinder

The game encourages to be creative, everything that is not written is what makes HQ even greater. Any mod made by Zargon should be embraced as part of the experience and every Zargon does things slightly different.

    Oh, don't forget the characters
all have a proper name before the game starts. While it doesn't affect the mechanics, it is the only way to uh... win, lol

I have to say, I really haven't seen or experienced too much gatekeeping in the HQ community. Certainly not compared to many other fandoms. There's been some very passionate complaints and praise, both in equal measure, about the relaunch. Most of it has been rooted more in preference than in objective criticism. A lot of people seem to prefer the aesthetics and character design of the MB/GW HQ, and I myself feel that way, but at the same time I am over the moon that HQ is back again and that all these expansions I grew up knowing about, but could never get ahold of are now so available/accessible. It's great. So, my experience for the most part has been very positive.
BUT... I have seen some typical stuff like people complaining about new hero types or gender variants (female versions of existing characters, dislike of the Orc Bard or the Druid, etc.). Lots of that. The translucent minis was also highly contentious. None of these things have been deal-breakers for me by any means. There's also been some complaining from backers of the HasLab campaign whenever anyone brings up making the exclusive content available in its original form for retail, especially the minis, which I am all for. The more people who have access to all of the content, the richer the gaming experience, and the more the community can grow.
All that said, the biggest thing I've noticed is that when contents get leaked, especially with "Jungles of Delthrak", people were far more distrusting and cynical than I would have expected. So many were vocal and adamant that the game was fake and that anyone who thought otherwise was a fool... even if they knew that the game was actually coming. I've been playing HQ since about 1991 and had some people try to tell me I was a newb because I knew that expansion was in the works from an official source. That was unexpected and did kind of leave a sour taste in my mouth, because if someone who has been a fan for over thirty years and who has collected multiple copies of the original base game over decades isn't viewed as being a legitimate fan, then who "qualifies"?

I wouldn't consider this a "downer" episode. I think inclusivity is something that many people don't consciously think about enough -- including myself. Self-awareness of when I'm doing it is half the battle of fixing it and creating more inclusive communities.
