    I saw this is the theater with my brother back in 1986 and we saw it in one of those old theaters that had the huge screen and this loud as F sound system. It was so incredibly intense I remember it to this day me and my brother looking at each other just in disbelief, the outside of the ship going through the clouds and the scream of the jets just so loud as hell I couldnt believe it, as if a real jet engine was going off in the theater. 1:14 This movie is so engrained in me that Ferro's bad-ass line has become part of the ethos of the voice in my head. On a rare occasion, every long once in a while, I'll be driving my car or riding my bike, and a single lane in traffic will open up between lines of multiple cars. At just the right moment I'll downshift and take off, just hauling ass for a few seconds though the corridor of vehicles on either side; Ferro's badass confident voice comes to me and I think to myself - "We're in the pipe, 5 X 5..."

    Now, I loved Aliens...but, the one thing that always bugged me was that they don't even leave one person aboard the _Sulaco_ . Literally the entire human complement (and 1 android) are put in one dropship and the _Sulaco_ is left empty. There must be a lot of cost-cutting going on in the future if they can't even send along a few Navy personnel to crew the ship.

    • @Tristan3D
      @Tristan3D 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The AI probably runs the ship. When they're down there it might be considered unnecessary to have someone aboard the ship. I would prefer at least one human overseer on such a ship, but nothing that a human can do couldn't be done by a strong AI, like Mother or Father.

    • @arkwill14
      @arkwill14 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Tristan3D But even if AI ran the ship it didn't do them any good on this mission. It couldn't send down another dropship on its own or offer help in any other way. Bishop still had to remotely pilot a ship down _after_ he made that long crawl through the pipe. It would have been far more useful if a human or android on the ship could have been monitoring the situation and helped them out without the team on the ground having to do everything for themselves with only the resources they brought with them.

      I know I love this movie but it didn't make any sense to leave the sulaco without a back up crew. If you think about it, Ripley really didn't need to go down with them. She could have monitored everything from the body cans and just stayed out of the action. Still an awesome movie though!

      @Invictus1293 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s known in the movies lore that Weyland-Yutani knew of the aliens presence in this movie and basically sent the marines there to be guinea pigs in a test. Same as the 1st movie. They didn’t want any witnesses and wanted the alien as a bio-weapon. It was a kill two birds with one stone situation because it also provided a way to get rid of Ripley before she could inform the public. Sending any crew on the ship would foil the whole plan

    Still a classic scene that modern movie makers seem not able to remake today. As for the explosive drop of the ship and the frigate? Either the drop ship was kicked out by explosive bolts for a rapid deploy or the Sulaco had to drop from deep orbit to skimming the upper ionosphere to allow the drop ship to well drop that fast (like a combat drop) to minimised being profiled on the trip down. It would not surprise me if the Sulaco did have to come down to the upper atmosphere to allow for the drop as it would be in a better position to protect the drop craft until last moment.

      They are in low orbit, but I believe much of what looks like them dropping down, is more like the Sulaco is flying up, or forward, orbitally. Essentially the dropship 'tucks and rolls' as the troopship skitters at high speed at low orbit. The loss of artificial gravity, combined with that lurch from being flung away is what makes them sick. Then Ferro kicks in the engines to maneuver them into their insertion arc and all the normal air physics kick in.
      least thats my take

      Listen to the drop sequence again, it's loud. They're either already in the upper atmosphere or there's a top-mounted thruster we don't see. Either way, after they put the crew into hypersleep (which we can't do) for the FTL trip to another star system (which is probably never going to happen) I'm not gonna worry too much about the Sulacco's exact orbital profile.

    As great as this scene is, something has bothered me since the very first time I saw it the day it premiered in '86.
    Namely, the drop ship would not 'drop' like that. The main ship is in orbit, and so is the drop ship. They would separate like the shuttle leaving the ISS.
    I wish they had put some thrusters on the top of the drop ship to signify its powered separation. I'll bet Cameron wanted to do this, he was well aware of the scene's physics, but figured it was one detail too many.
    Still bothers me every time I see it though. That and the slight 'string wobble' the drop ship does as it passes the planet's terminator..

    When I saw this scene as a teenager, I was totally thrilled.
    When I see it today, stupid "adult questions" come to my mind. For example: How exactly is the dropship supposed to fly in the atmosphere if it has no wings? It also has no recognisable rotors with which it could hover. That it is supposed to be able to fly can be seen from the fact that it has a tail unit at the rear.
    All in all, this dropship has the flight characteristics of a stone. And would also hit the ground like one.
    Well, I guess that it looks cool and has as many weapon arms as possible was more important than the question of how exactly it is supposed to fly. - Or in short: Style over Substance.
