A very instrumental art tutor of mine once told me that our brush strokes should be as unique as our handwriting. I think artists often underestimate the importance of having an arsenal of brush strokes from which to draw from. Your “drill” just reiterates how important this is. Thanks again for sharing your talent and time. You are an absolute breath of fresh air! Blessings!
I have this collection of dagger brushes from just about every brush company, started because of a Terry Harrison tutorial for the brushes he designed where he whipped that dagger brush all over and around the paper making the coolest marks I think I’ve ever seen, including these “marsh grasses” and I just had to be able to make those marks with watercolor paint! Terry passed away a few years ago, suddenly at a not that old age (to me at least, because I’m, uh, middle aged myself) and I remember thinking what a loss to the art world. But Kristy is a lot like Terry because she’s fun and funny and inspiring and she makes painting and learning so much fun. Thank you Kristy for working so hard to help other people learn to paint. 😊
I’m old. I am half blind. I have so many things wrong with me…I’m trying out things such as a bad stroke, rotator cuff problems (3 surges on them). A bulging disc. RA,OA, fibro myalgia. Compromised immune system, etc!! You see, I try out these conditions and then tell my friends which ones to be sure and avoid!! When I found watercolor lessons on-line, I was so excited! I don’t see depths and can’t discern many colors…but I am trying and having so much JOY! You are a PRECIOUS teacher and I look forward to seeing you each day! Thank you for sharing your talent and making me continue to move my hand and arm! I love you and your talent🥰
Makes me want to paint again, to let go of my fear and become confident enough that I STOP calling myself a beginner. Of course that means I have to stick with it, I have to paint every day (or every other day, as time permits!). I have to put pigment to paper for the JOY of it! Kristy, you inspire me!
I’m so glad I’m inspiring you!! But I have some unsolicited words of advice for you: Pht that brush to paper absolutely but don’t feel like you have to paint a certain number of days a week. Sure in the beginning pushing past the fear of the blank page a bunch of times is a good idea but motivation begets momentum so let it happen when it happens and then you won’t even have to plan it eventually, you’ll just be drawn to the brush!!
HOLY COW! As my dad used to say, the right tool for the right job. I had been frustrated following you with a 1/2 inch Dagger. I invested in a 1/4 in and right off the bat; I AM PAINTING LEAVES!! *lol*. I can definitely see why this is your go-to brush. I think it is mine now too!
I am a musician by training and this video is the closet to scales and arpeggios I have seen for painting! I am a practice fan by nature, and have been playing with my dagger brush making strokes for the last few days before seeing this one. I like that you remind me to use the tip and the flat edge! I tend to just be using the curved edge. Love all of your videos, thank you! My OCD loves filling a page with nothing but strokes. You should see the number of pages of single stroke leaves I have done since I started using watercolor!
I went to pick up a few random art supplies today because I’m teaching my granddaughter to watercolor, so I was practicing with my new dagger brushes and when I finished this video I added some tiny deep red splashes, the I picked up the black India ink and then the gold Daler Rowney watercolor ink and when I finished I had the coolest abstract piece of art!😊 just from brush strokes and ink and a little gold ink. Joy. 🤩
Love this video. I got you "Art For Joy's Sake from the library (for the 2nd time, I may have to buy one) and I just wasn't understanding what you meant by the long edge of the brush. This video is so helpful. You make watercolor look super accessible. I just turned 61, I love learning new things, and I'm super excited about watercolor now! Thanks so much for sharing.
Just received your brush set. Love the dagger brush. These drills were so helpful, but when you demonstrated how to use strokes in a painting I got lost when you speeded the video up. Please do a really slow version of the painting part. Ty
Under the video, there is a settings symbol. If you click on it you can choose the playback speed you want, and slow the video wherever you want to see it in slow motion.
Glad I rediscovered my dagger and found your drills. It’ll take time and develop my muscle memory so here goes!!! 😍…oh and I think the Canson XL has less or no cotton content. Arches is 100% cotton so it absorbs the water quickly. On Canson it sits on top because it’s pulp not cotton.
When you started the tutorial you said to use any quality watercolor and indicating in my opinion, that your own handmade watercolor paint wasn’t a good quality or the best. However, I have your Making Art for Joys Sake pallet of watercolor and I absolutely love them! I think that your paint is wonderful and I use it as my go to pallet for painting every day,( along with a few specialty colors by Daniel Smith )and couldn’t be happier. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just received this brush in the mail and had a bad painting session. This practice with the brush is exactly what I needed and what I should have done before attempting to dive right in and paint a floral page . I love the way you explain what we should be doing and the reasons for each of the drills. Excellent tutorial!!!
Hi Kristy, I have watched many of your videos, do you have one that just covers the dagger brush with drills on different flower petals. I have seen flowers and tried to copy what you do, but you paint pretty fast and I have slowed the videos way down to follow. I can paint a single petal like a leaf (you have great videos on leaves) but having a drill to develop my skills on fluffy petals would be great. Thank you for caring about us, it completely comes through in your videos. Hugs my friend!
I have had 2 dagger brushes from Michael's that I will practice this with. When you sped up I slowed it down so I could really see your hand move the brush. Always love your vids. Biggest Fan!!!
I just discovered this video & it was just in time too! I bought my first dagger brush this week & am SO EXCITED to dive into the paints with it! Thank you Kristy for your encouragement & JOY that you bring to me through your channel! 😍🎨
Kristy, I love your videos, even though I am a beginner. They are highly motivated. I liked this one because it was so helpful with drills for using a dagger.
I am a committed round brush user but falling in love with these brushes in the very mad of you some and just filling up page after page of strokes and color and not too worried about the process thank you for your videos!
I can tell you right now you’ll never have it all figured out 😂 I’ve been painting for 30 years… and everyday I see something online that blows my mind and proves I have a lot to learn. Ah well! Learning is fun.
I just got your 1/4 in dagger brush. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I can’t even make a one stroked lead much less a two stroked leaf. The petals look tadpoles.I want to like this brush so much. I know I’m just beginning but the round brush is easier for me to make leaves. You make it look so easy. I’m just really getting blobs. 😩
Okay we got this… press, drag, slowly for about 1/2 inch or a bit more and as you drag gradually lighten your pressure (lift). The slower your gradually lift, the more fine of a pointed leaf shape you’ll get. If you drag and lift quickly you’ll get a more blunt ended leaf :) Try that and let me know how it goes!
Oh my, I'm having a rough day with this one but I refuse to give up! I think I'm too much in my head about mine not looking like yours... I've always been far too critical of myself. Maybe today is just a "have fun making marks with colors" kind of day. 😕 But I still absolutely love your teaching style and fun personality! 💖
I'm just starting and on a whim decided to get the set. I like that the pouch and colors on the brushes are nice too. I will get the cheaper pad for drills. I will try out the drills. I will have to get more brushes but cant decide lol. I want to paint deep sea scenes eventually and cards combining stamps and watercolors and other mediums. Thanks for the video.

Had to get the mini Majestic and a Prin Select dagger to come back to this tutorial. Perfect sized. My Prin Aqua 1/4 & BV Silv 1/4 are too soft & too long … no clue why they’re making them this way??? Now , to the practice with you … and some fun time.
Thank you so much for the video. I have found that it has helped. I think for me I need to loosen up, go with the flow and stop over thinking. Will definitely go through this again
Oh my goodness my brushes just arrived today and hen I see you are doing these awesome brush tutorials WHOOP WHOOP! I adore them Kristy! Thanks so much
This video was super helpful! Your brushes are on their way to me now, and I can't wait to practice using them! I love the idea of working intuitively as I can tend to over think everything-which takes alot of the fun out of painting.😊❤
One of the best video you have made for us, Kristy! I just got your brushes and am so happy that you are giving us drills to learn how to use them. Cannot believe how loose I am painting so I want to thank you for giving us your experience and enthusiasm!
Heck yeah! I felt like I was in an aerobics workout class. I told you earlier today I was going out and buy a dagger, and I bought two! Just went through these drills and know these brushes will improve my art and help me develop the style I was looking for. Thanks so much!!! I plan to buy your brushes if they are still available.
I just recently found you. You're amazing! I can't wait to start using my watercolor supplies .. with better results, no doubt, because of you. 💕 Subscribed!
Just bought my first dagger 1/4" brush. My bristles look longer than yours but did get a great beginners push and instruction on its multiple uses! Thanks
I'm used to Sumi brushes of all sizes and hairs, but after watching your channel i had to try these mysterious dagger brushes. I ripped them out their packages and started... Then got a wee frustrated that I couldn't make the flowers like you. Ah then found this video so there is hope again.
Just bought your brushes and the Art of Joy book… excited to start my journey into watercolors !! Love your videos … Have them saved in my gmail … But now I will start learning technique with your book 😄❤️
Kristy I have been trying for weeks using your 1/4 in dagger. it doesn't look as rounded and leaves are impossible. they start out pointed and way long. what am I doing wrong?
Kristy! I have done this drill four times. My control and understanding of the dagger brush is so much better. I actually can make thin lines, beautiful swirly leaves, and passable (!) flowers. I'm using Ohuhu mix media paper. It's inexpensive so great for practice. I did not get the pretty bleeds that I love. But I know that is the paper. My sincere thanks! I was getting really down about my progress. Thanks again!
A few years ago my bf gifted me 5 silver black velvet brushes after i had mentioned i was wanting a few. He had no idea what he was grabbing which ended up being a happy surprise because he got me their sword brush. I havent practiced withit as much as i should but i love it and my poor rigger brush hasnt been touched since lol. I dont know that it will ever replace my trusty #10 round as my workhorse, but it is such a wonderful multipurpose brush!
I’m having a love-fest with a squirrel hair quill… going to try this, thanks. Ah, the eighteen and have it all figured out feeling. That was something, I can’t believe I thought that. But I did, too.
I believe canson xl has sizing in it. Thank you for doing these tutorials of your brushes. Do you have a video introducing your watercolors you sell? I did save the video to go back and use to practice...thank you again.
just ordered the brushes, can't wait to try them all out, especially the dagger....thank you for this tutorial, I think it will definitely help. I will let you know :)
Kirsty may I say you look 20 years young!!!! I love your enthusiasm and methods. Wish I discovered you earlier, but only found you last week, March 2022!! But rather late than never. I tought myself to paint, but your videos are soooo good and your paintings excellent. Learning a lot from you. Thank you for the joy you bring!! 🌺🌺🌺🌺
Thank you so much for this video. Finally, Amazon has your brushes in stock. I will not receive until February. In the meantime, I purchased a Silver Black Velvet 1/4 inch dagger. The point and the brush hairs are sooo long. It has been challenging. I am a beginner and sure this is a lovely brush. I am fine with leaves. But cannot get those lovely short petal strokes like yours. Any suggestions on using this brush??
I have this exact brush and it is more difficult to control for sure. The bristles are longer and softer and don’t have the snap back that mine do. Not a bad thing, just different. Hold the brush out more towards the end opposite the bristles. You’ll actually have more of a feeling of control that way.
@@virginiabusch139 Oh the black velvet, yesss very hard to control. But once you master a stiffer/shorter dagger you'll be able to go back to the black velvet with ease and make magic :)
I just got a dagger brush and a sword brush(I got them from Princeton and Derwent). I think these drills are so useful to get to know all types of brushes. Thank you for these videos, you inspire us to create and practice.
Hi Kristy, This video was just what I needed, I spent my evening trying to get to know the quarter inch dagger and I was frustrated and really needed some instruction. Your video popped up this morning and gave me the motivation and interest to try again. I love the drills and how you ended with a composition. Thank you, last night I was ready to throw everything away, paint brushes paper and everything but I heard your voice in my head saying don’t do it just keep trying and I will try again ! Thank you!🌸☺️

I dont know that it will ever replace my trusty #10 round as my workhorse, but it is such a wonderful multipurpose brush!
really lovely tutorial- thank you!
Glad you like it! :)
I’m having a love-fest with a squirrel hair quill… going to try this, thanks.
Ah, the eighteen and have it all figured out feeling. That was something, I can’t believe I thought that. But I did, too.
That was indeed something, lol!!
Very helpful video! I love your brush set. I was using only rounds for so long, your dagger and cats tongue brushes are now my faves! 🌸🎨
Wonderful!!!
I believe canson xl has sizing in it. Thank you for doing these tutorials of your brushes. Do you have a video introducing your watercolors you sell? I did save the video to go back and use to practice...thank you again.
You’re welcome!! No official palette video yet. Soon!!
just ordered the brushes, can't wait to try them all out, especially the dagger....thank you for this tutorial, I think it will definitely help. I will let you know :)
Yes keep me posted!!!
Love it! Can’t wait to do these drills. Thank you!
You’re welcome!!
You may you may, lol!!!! So glad you’re here and thank you very much for the sweet words!!!
So hard to control. Thanks for the help and suggestion.
I ordered yours. Returning this one. I just don’t like it.
@@virginiabusch139 Tell me more about your frustrations, I want to help!
You’re very welcome!
Thank you!🌸☺️
I love it.
I would like to see how you finish the practice painting. Like every time….
Sooo I have a series of lives I did a few weeks back where I did just that!!!
In this playlist you’re looking for any thumbnail that talks about finishing your art!
