    I think what makes this game so mediocre is that it is basically a mini game collection, with only 6 mini games. Wii sports only had a few games too, but each game had a few different ways to play it, making the overall experience feel so full. It’s this difference that makes switch sports feel so lacking in charm and variety, in my opinion (also RIP Miis as the dominant avatar.)

    • @Commander6444
      @Commander6444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      And also, Wii Sports was a) free, b) incredibly unique for the time, and (in my opinion) completely outdone by Wii Sports Resort. Wii Sports isn't lightning in a bottle that can just be captured again 16 years later. Or at least, not without evolving the formula.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Also Wii Sports was “free”. There’s a reason why Wii Sports Resort had LOTS of mini games, because you had to actually pay money for it. Plus it had new hardware bundled with it. This game just seems barebones.

    The main problem is that Wii Sports was sold as a pack-in tech-demo for many people's first video game console of their life. It was one of, if not the, best-selling consoles of their time. A sequel to Wii Sports on a different console would need to be just as valid of a tech demo, and just as accessible for new players. A game like this, releasing at full price, _five_ *_years_* after the Switch's launch... it has absolutely zero of the advantages the Wii game benefitted from. This would be much better suited as a free NSO game, if anything.

    • @MoiMagnus1er
      @MoiMagnus1er 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      In some way this problem is why Miyamoto strongly opposed the released of Wii Sport as a bundle with the Wii (and in the end still vetoed it in Japan, which is the only country in which Wii Sport was not included in the Wii).
      He was convinced that peoples would not understand that Wii Sport was much more than a tech demo, and was a full game that demanded enormous amount of work to produce. He was against "giving away for free" a game that in his opinion should have been full price (as much as new entries in the Zelda and Mario franchises).
      We can argue whether or not he underestimated how much bundling up Wii Sport would help the Wii to gain the success it had. But given the quality of the Switch Sport games, I think it's clear he wasn't understating the amount of work that was required to create Wii Sport.

    • @NuiYabuko

    • @chlochlo742
      @chlochlo742 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I do agree, it is only £30, which is half the price of a regular switch game and WELL worth it. Same with people complaining about £35 for the expansion pack for NSO, that's a lot less than a single game, and it comes with loads of free DLC, games and good (for nintendo) online connectivity!

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chlochlo742 Those games are too ancient to rightfully profit from and have issues with how they're being officially emulated, and Nintendo isn't offering a way to permanently own them. And people can do their own portability with the Steam Deck and their own online multiplayer with Parsec. Sure, it's less convenient to do so, but that's on the Steam Deck and emulator makers, not the concepts of Switchlike PCs and emulation themselves, and convenience isn't right to charge for. Nintendo's only charging money for the old games because they want you to perpetually earn the "privilege" of having fun like they're a well-meaning-but-untrusting parent. The online itself is being charged for mainly to make up for the increased cost of physical Switch games compared to physical disc and even physical dedicated portable games, and the new games being somewhat overpriced as a whole is what REALLY funds the online. Nintendo's online isn't exactly going to be the fastest thing to improve, especially with how piracy-paranoid they are.

    As a Wii sports successor, it's great... But it's not just about Wii sports, it's the legacy of Wii sport resort and the 'wii' brand games. The people who were most excited for switch sports wasn't the casual consumer base who bought Wii sports, they've all moved on. It was the dedicated fans, if switch sports had alot of the revamped activities from resorts then I think more people would've been on board with the game.

      Mm, that a little selfish to say. Nintendo is a multibillion dollar corporation, they’re not aiming to old players, but to new ones. A lot of the people who bough the game did it for their children and to play in family. That why they changed the mii’s from main character focus. Nintendo don’t give a flying F about fans, they’re more interested in introducing new players to the consoles 🤷🏻‍♀️

    It needs more. If they DLC the mess outta this, give it old game modes, give it practice game modes, a Pro System like the OG Wii Sports games had where you can feel progress, and then buff the online experience, they could have a classic. This feels like a foundation game that they can build on, and I hope that they do because it can be so much fun if it becomes as expansive as we know it can be.

    I think the game that really suffered the most early on Switch was 1, 2 Switch. That seemed to be like more of a technical demo that should've been a free pack-in, like Wii Sports, but as we've seen recently in Reggie's book, NCL aren't fans of "giving away" their "valuable" software, even if the software isn't as valued by consumers (eg 80%+ critic scores and user ratings across the board, selling millions etc...) as Nintendo think it should be.
    Hopefully they can rescue this through QoL and new sport updates, or with a Switch Sports Deluxe/Club Switch Sports/Switch Sports Resort(?) release :p
    Fingers crossed for Mario Strikers!

    • @johnmickey5017

      Nintendo was kinda smart to focus on Zelda/Odyssey and avoid veering too close to Wii / Wii U with a focus on 1 2 Switch, but they should have just pre-installed it on the consoles, made it a free download, or sold it physical for like $10. I’d say bundle it with Joycons like Wii Play but the whole point of that game was that you didn’t need more controllers…

    • @CarbonRollerCaco
      @CarbonRollerCaco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You think maybe 1-2-Switch would've been a pack-in or even a free preinstall if Iwata were still alive? I had been arguing that it's not about making bank with Nintendo's persistent monetization of old things, but simply making sure people don't have any fun they hadn't "rightfully earned", believing it to be part of their traditional Japanese moral responsibility, and that's why they continue to be staunchly anti-piracy despite that aspect of them being so hated. They do NOT trust others to behave themselves even though they absolutely should be more lenient. And that's also why they're so scared of online: it's really the whole idea of platform openness they fear. So if Reggie made such a claim about Nintendo, I have no reason to doubt him there regardless of his own motives. But piracy is a bogeyman. If people think you're worth supporting, and they can if you explain things, they'll support you if they can and want. They're not all selfish barbarians who need to be policed during the whole of their mortal existence in order to be cleansed, and Nintendo, let alone the whole world, isn't going to shatter because a bunch of nerds "stole" Super Mario Bros. or whatever. People can know how far is too far, and can still support you later.

The fact that you don't have to let go of the button really kind of simplifies the bowling a little bit too much for me. The game is good, no matter what expectations everyone had. This is a wii sport remaster, not a wii sport resort. The controls are not bad, I tested all my joycons and the ones white drift where the only ones where I had problems with accuracy. The online mode is impressive to be.. well, Nintendo. The games have more of a strategy, and you don’t need friends to play it. I loved wii sports, but one of the things I didn’t like was that if my sisters wasn’t with me, it wasn’t gonna be fun unless it was bowling and golf. The rank online system is fine, wish there was a way to completely turn off the special bowling games when playing pro. I love games where there are constant updates and weekly rewards, and it reminds me of animal crossing, specially if they’re gonna make special outfits and accessories for events or holidays.
    I wish the online system let you have friends and make teams for soccer, there seems to be hints of a free roaming that was never implemented and I don’t think it’ll ever will, the local play is almost the same as the online, but less fun, and I don’t like that the items are random. Overall, if you’re gonna play with friends, and it’s something that would interest you in the future when they add more content, it’s a good game. Not the best, not great, but good. 7/10 that’ll probably go up as they start to add more and more content. Soon enough, people are gonna forget and stop complaint about it 🤷🏻‍♀️

    As for the "finish it later" type games, I think the only one that ever did it well was Splatoon 2, at least on the switch. It was a new weapon every single week for I think around a year, new maps every month for like two years, and even after they stopped doing a weapon every week, they moved to 4 weapons every month. It was a constant stream of updates that always kept people coming back because they never left. No other sort of "finish it later" game on switch has really had that level of consistency to keep things interesting.

    Thank you for giving your honest take on the game, I was excited when I saw NSS on the Nintendo Direct live stream, but was on the fence about actually buying it on release because of the whole "drip-feeding of content" concept that Nintendo is so fond of nowadays.
    That concept in and of itself became most apparent to me with Animal Crossing New Horizon. So many things that were integral to previous releases weren't implemented for months (swimming, villagers visiting your house, etc), and if it wasn't for the hype of finally getting a main-line AC console release after seven years, then I reckon reviewers would've been harsher with their scoring. There are still game aspects to ACNH that are missing entirely compared to older releases, and we may never get them at all (like more shop upgrades).

    I'd say it's alright, but comparing it to the other Sport titles in the series I'd say it's the 3rd best as of right now.
    *Pros:*
    - Fun way to play with friends, family, or just strangers online or locally.
    - Almost all the sports are fun to play.
    - The game feels fluid and looks nice.
    *Pro/Con:*
    - We know that they are planning to add more to the game; either by weekly (accessories) or monthly (new game mode).
    *Con:*
    - The game feels like a reset; considering their isn't more sports (like boxing) and characters (like Matt) from past series have been left out.
    - The game is catered to the online rather than local/single player. Climbing the ranks to play a hard cpu in single player was always fun but challenging to do.
    - Playing online sometimes has it's hiccups.
    - Every sports doesn't have an extra mode for every sport like battle yourself in tennis, chambra (sword play) showdown or sword play speed slice, and etc.
    - You need to equip the Sportsmate, have an account on the switch, and the account needs to have switch online to have the full customization of the character. Guess characters in the game gets nothing but the basics.
    At the end, it honestly depends on how one plays and who do they play with.

    • @PhilUP
      @PhilUP 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@WednesdayMan Again it depends how and who do you play with. Other than that I feel like this game doesn't have the uniqueness of Wii sports games.
      *Some examples are:*
      - No cool intro like when it's your first time booting Wii Sport Restort you parachute to Wuhu Island
      - No unique menu like zooming on your person in Spocco Square like in Wii Sport Resort on Wuhu Island
      - Blowing the ball backwards
      - Secret 100 pin strike when blowing the ball onto the rail
      - Slicing a fruit
      - No secret input code to get a unique gear or court like in tennis
      - Viewers gets crowded/cheerier when the player is a high rank
      - Daytime doesn't change: Night, Morning, Sunset, Noon
      There's are a lot more examples but it can be used as a customization option for Switch Sports. Of course this isn't that important, but it's those little details that can make a game more enjoyable, which is why many people say Wii Sports games are amazing.

Its like they made a new Mario game but literally everything is different except for the fact that Mario is an optional playable character. It doesn’t really expand on past games at all since it has very few options for all the sports, there are no stamps and less sports overall. Not only that the Mii’s are obviously not the main focus as they have less customizability options and unlockable costumes seem to be the main reason why people would want to keep playing the game.

    My thoughts on Switch Sports
    I enjoy it but I can see that there is a lack in the amount of sports & even the lack of options for each sports like picking the score limit & or removing it & just have it so u can only win if u score x amount of goals ect
    I do think $40 ($50 with leg strap & box which btw is insanely high quality) is kinda pushing it a tiny bit as I think $30 would have been better (then $40 for leg strap)
    But this game does get me to come back as I like to unlock most if not all the customizations & if you have been keeping up or heard about some of the customizations that have been datamined/leaked they have done themselves pretty good on this particular part of the game
    Overall I think once Golf is added & the potential of Dogeball & Basketball it will make the game for those who have yet to pick it up feel alot more worth it
    I also hope that when we get Golf that it isn't just a update that adds in 1 sport as I'd like for them to add in challenge modes like how Wii sports had the 100 bowling pins or baseball with the homerun stuff ect
    & As for sports I'd like to see get added in the main sport I'd really want is baseball (as I cross my fingers for the next Mario sports game after strikers is a new sluggers🤞🏻) then the only other sports I'd care about would be basketball & boxing anything after would just be bonuses to me
    Either way there is fun to be had with this game & we know we will be getting more sports down the road & with summer around the corner where we will be getting lots of gaming news like every summer I'm sure Nintendo will (hopefully) give us more info on what's to come sports wise to this game

    The reason Wii Sports was so good was because you made a Mii of yourself and then got to play as yourself in a variety of different sports. They had enough depth to make it fun too. It was the fact that it was simple but had depth if you took the time to practice. Golf was easily the best game, but for me bowling was the most fun. I loved playing the 100 pin version. I am kind of sad that they made the characters generic and they don't base it off your Mii should you have one in your profile. The reason Miis worked was because it didn't matter what race or gender you are because they were just cartoon enough to work for everybody's body shape.

    I have been enjoying the game a lot, and I love the Wii Sports games. I could not agree more about the lack of variety with the games, so hopefully Nintendo will add more modes in future updates. This game and Ring Fit Adventure have kept me moving, and I’m enjoying that aspect of things.

    As long as you like multiplayer games it's great and for less than 30 pounds a bargain, as for bowling i usually get a decent long game.

    You don't need the leg strap, get it digital and get it for $40 in the US. For that price and as someone who doesn't have access to a Wii or Wii U it's more than worth it! One more experience to add to the Switch's portfolio, and I am having a ton of fun so far. The controls all feel great to me, especially compared to the Wii and 51CG, and it'll be a blast with the family and friends. Don't let reviews scare you away, if it looks fun it will more than suffice at $40!

      I think the complaint is the fact that there isn't a way to get a physical copy without the leg strap (as far as I can tell)

    I don't care what score you slap on it. I love it. It's exactly what I wanted- Wii Sports, in HD, on Switch with tabletop mode play. I wouldn't miss this for the world.

    Aside from the score you guys gave it, I thought the game was bad from the first trailer I saw from it, the lone fact that the first game was a free launch game (clearly with budget graphics, but it was free) and had boxing was what made it's success imo.

    It's not bad, it's just really underwhelming. It lacks most of the charm that made the wii sports series so fun and instead it feels like any other 3rd party sports title (except that its more well made in a technical way). One of my favorite parts was how the world of wii sports and resort felt like a community since all the miis you made and some of the built in ones would show up in the world or background. I just would rather play resort or the original one instead

      Not really sure how to word it but a big thing to me was, the island wasn't just a place for the sports. With the Island Flyby, not only could you see locations of the other sports, but the island itself really felt like an actual community, a real lived-in place. If it was real it'd be a place I'd want to visit.

    I am enjoying the new Nintendo switch sports. I wish they would have the love wing up system offline and I wish there was boxing and some meat mini games within the games they already have. And I wish it was more options to select when you're playing online by yourself. Besides that I'm still having fun with it. But I always will love the original Wii sports, Wii sports resort and Wii sports club on the Wii U.

    I agree there need to be more online options. I came home the other night from a particularly hard day at work and I just wanted to bowl online, and it kept giving me the trick bowling 4 times in a row, I just shut it off after I saw the fifth setup and went to bed slightly angrier. I know I could just play alone, but I wanted to bowl online and just play actual bowling, and I couldn’t. I think that is a mistake.

    My main issue with the game is simply that they should’ve added more! The six games are quite fun, but I really feel like they should have 10-12. Now, they will probably update it with new games (golf coming in summer), but clubhouse games has 50 games from the start.. that’s the only disappointing thing.
