      16mm always seemed like a great choice because it's smaller yet still looks great, and thus a more accessible way to do a bunch of tests
      I was particularly interested in the guy mentioning that special telecine session, I wonder what that entails
      But there is a literal infinite number of possibilities to do. Bleach bypass. A photochemical grade, sure why not. See what happens to grain when you over- or under-rate the sensitivity.
      Also WatchingtheAerial's video on the color of The Ring was particularly cool too!

    Blaine how does the focus puller get a video signal from film?

    • @jonathangogoi
      @jonathangogoi 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      A videotap (a tiny camera recording the ground glass) is used for live monitoring on set.
      For a focus puller, relying on a videotap feed to check for sharps is not ideal so using additional tools such as rangefinders (Cine RT Focusbug or Preston LR2 to name a few) is usually preferred to maintain the focus in accordance to the depth of field.

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep. What Jonathan said. The video signal is quite different than what we see on digital cameras as it is a camera inside the camera getting a feed through a beam splitter. Useful for framing things, but you still can’t judge exposure from it. And yes focus puller will either make marks, and rehearse the moves, or use a rangefinder. On this shoot we did use a laser rangefinder that you can see mounted to the top of the camera!

    can anyone explain how film looks sharp but soft? you can punch in like at 6:08, and it still has the same quality . Im not really talking about the resolution per se, theres something about the grain that allows the image to stay consistent

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      its a combo of magic and the 1st AC Arjun :) I think grain does help an image to feel sharp, despite it kind of softening the image too. I have some stuff ive zoomed in like 500% and it still looks and feels good.

    • @t3chnicolor
      @t3chnicolor 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s the magic of film and why people love its look so much. Also has to do with something called halation I think, which may or may not have to do with the silver halide crystals inside the actual celluloid and how it reacts to light…

    Oh Blaine, had a question. Perhaps an idea for your endless list! You mentioned you crossprocessed Ektrachrome as a negative... have you considered crosspro of color negative stock in E6 chemicals? Actually, I wonder if you can with a regular lab. Ektrachrome has no remjet iirc, so I hope they'd be able to remove it if you wanted to push color negative through the process. Uh, maybe you should ask them about it first so you don't ruin their chemicals...

    • @BlaineWestropp1
      @BlaineWestropp1  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I could ask the lab about this. I do love how vision3 looks processed in ecn2 so I’d be hesitant to develop a whole role of it in e6 just bc of the overall cost. But if the lab tells me it’ll be cool, I’m down for it! I don’t even know if it is a possibility but I can look into it. 😎

      I kind of treat it similar to digital.. but just less moves. I push to towards the look I want. I don’t try and preserve any grain or halation at all, I also don’t preserve the white and black levels. I will balance the color (white balance), add contrast, maybe a little saturation (sometimes) and sometimes use a print film LUT and adjust below that. That being said… apart from adding contrast I don’t do much at all. Very minor moves. So I guess in a way it is preserved.
