Thank you very much. This is terrific because I don't see any videos explaining the efficacy of HDD's specifically for video editing. Everyone is advocating SSD's, but I'm currently not working off of one right now and need to know if I'm okay with what I'm using.

Good info my brother, I have max out an 5T HDD drive storing all my 360 files, so I bought an WD 8T HDD drive to store my files, and transferring those files over takes forever. But I will get me an SSD drive to put my editing programs on there like DaVinci, IMovie etc. thank you.

Hey, man, amazing video. I have three Seagate external hard drives I use to edit off of. I am using Resolve editing with BRAW footage. Would you recommend the T5 or T7 Samsung for only editing?

Hey what’s up boss, thanks for watching. I would go with the T5. I had a T7 first but I kept having an issue where it would overheat and disconnect. I am not sure if it’s something that had been fixed as this was years ago but I k ow the T7’s are known for that.

I have a question for you. If I record footage on my PC with OBS with SSD and store those raw files on HDD, will the quality go down while editing? All my applications like games, photo editing, and more run on my SSD, but while recording in high quality my SSD gets full quickly. Can I save room by storing that raw footage on my 5TB HDD while editing? Or will that be a problem??

Do be honest with you, I don’t know anything about OBS. Editing off of an SSD or HDD will have the same quality but an SSD will be much faster. If you have other things running off the SSD however, there may be a drop in performance. Hope this helps

This gentlemen has good intentions but I am sorry to say, he is absolutely 100% wrong. I'm an IT tech and i can assure you, If you do a lot of video editing or music production, you do not want to do it on an SSD drive. If you have a desktop computer, get yourself a 16tb HDD drive to edit on and use your SSD drive to transfer and sae your files. What this gentlemen and a lot of people do not understand is SSD drives have a limited life span. With normal use they are only good for about 5 or 6 years. That is because they have a limited and set amount of writing capability before they wear out and just die. IT's like being a smoker. Each cigarette you smoke takes a day or two of your lifespan away. Even more so with an SSD drive. Once an SSD drive dies. That's a wrap.
There is no retreiving any file that was on there. They are lost forever.
Video editing, you are constantly writing and deleting data and that will wear that SSD drive out QUICK.
If you dont mind replacing that drive in a year or two and are willing to lose your data...go ahead. lol.
Use an SSD drive for your operating system and to store completed files. Do not use them to edit at all.install your editing software on the ssd, but go into your settings and dedicate the actual writing processes to your HDD drive.
WIth a good HDD drive like a WD black series your speeds will be just fine . The only time you would lose speed is if you installed the software on the HDD drive.
You always want to use two hard drives regardless. Even if you have no SSD and jsut an HDD drive in your computer. You always want one drive dedicated to the software and another drive to be the workhorse so your software doesnt bog out and your editing session will be as smooth as possible.
Installing the software and editing all on one drive will strain your drive AND your system.... No offense to the man who made this video. But what i just explained will save you a LOT of trouble. Also, if you dont have at least 32gb of ram you are already starting off on the wrong foot.
That is the most important piece of the puzzle. If you dont have at least 32gb of ram in your machine and you are a video editor or are planning to. The first thing you need to do is go shopping.
If you are serious about video editing and are wanting to go all in. Invest in a good desktop computer that has a high end video card with ray tracing capabilities like the Nvidia RTX 4080 super. A higher end Intel or an AMD x3d cpu that has 16 threads and put 64gb of ram in it. I dont care how powerful your laptop is. If you are contantly video editing on a laptop you are going to kill it.there isnt enough air flow in a laptop and it's internal organs will eventually succumb to the constant stress and heat that it is being put through. Ask any gamer what eventually happened to their " Gaming laptop" after constant use, they will tell you their horror story about wasting a few grand on what is now a paper weight and how they went back to their desktop... They might be powerful adn they might be branded a gaming laptop, but wht they dont put in the details is the fact that they are only meant for the casual gamer, not a die hard. Same scenerio for a video editor. Photo editing. no problem with a laptop. Video editing? no way. Notice how hot your laptop is after a nice long video editing session? Thats because you had basically been holding it over a fire and cooking it.
I feel bad for theb people who ran right out and bought an SSD after seeing this video. Shame....

I seriously hate the fact that you did not read the title of this video before leaving this long ass dissertation that there was no point of anyone reading. The title of my video reads reads best EXTERNAL hard drive to edit from. So all the points up try to bring up about editing in a desktop and why everyone should be doing that is irrelevant lmao. Like seriously wtf. Were you bored? This video was intended for people like me who edit on the go on a laptop. Can I bring a desktop in the go??
The best part of the comment was how you tried to refer to me as a gentleman to seem polite but then you fucked it up at the end by saying it’s a shame for whoever watched this video.
While you are at it, you should have looked at every other comment for the people who found value and what they were looking for in this video
Next time you try to come on any piece of content in the internet and comment long ass thesis, make sure your comment is appropriate to what you are trying to criticize. Because you made yourself look like an idiot here buddy 🤦🏾‍♂️
