  • Casey Putsch checks out his DeLorean buddy's 1978 Pontiac Grand Safari and drives on the Algorithm of life! This car sits 8 people and is so incredibly ridiculous, it is truly awesome! Classic American woody wagon lives on with fake wood in the grandest of eccentric National Lampoon's Vacation wonderment! Enjoy the ride!

Seriously man, that thing would be a roller with no floors if I found it near me. So brutally impossible to find old stuff these days that doesn't require weeks of welding before the mechanicals even get looked at.
And if they run & drive, they want stupid $...even before all the current madness. I'll never get it.

Used to run those as taxis in a college town. My biggest load was 20. The only thing I can come up with to do with that is hit the drive through at rush hour fully loaded and just let everyone in the car yell out huge orders all at once, then change your mind.

    • @DjJtown

Did that, but you'll get away with it today; which would make for an Awesome vid! When we did it back in '83, a few construction guys weren't laughing along and "Helped" me move my car out of line. Yes, one of them yanked me out & thru me on my roof while the other drove it over 2 parking blocks into the other part of the lot. If it was anything other than an AMC, it probably wouldn't have been driveable after that.

Growing up all the dad's in our neighborhood had a station wagon rivalry between all the different brands and sizes. My dad being an Oldsmobile guy had the Cutlass Cruiser, but we had Caprices, Elektras, Roadmasters, Celebrities, Centurys, Safaris and even a Grand Squire on the block! Those were the days, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Oh my. In 1986 I worked for a strugging computer store in Frederick MD. One of the owners had the local VW, Audi and Honda dealers. We needed a car to deliver computers but had no money and ended up with a 1978 Pontiac Safari Wagon for $1000 coutesy of Shockley VW/Audi. Same color, same features, same faux wood, same wheel covers. We flogged the crap out of that thing for years then sold it to an employee for beer money. Thanks for the video!

There have been a few youtubers to do vids pointing out "the quirks & features" of these malaise era wagons but none; I mean that honestly; None have had me smiling and remembering so vividly the fun I had in them as a kid. From the minute you started jumping around when he said he'd take you for a ride, til the time he pulled back in and you're planning when/what you're gonna do on the next ride. BTW, my first car was also a wagon; a 1975 AMC Hornet Runabout 258 ci 1bbl with +250K miles on it; in lemon yellow. As Bob Hope used to say: Thanks for the memories...now go fishing.

  • @OllamhDrab

Yes! Peak station wagon, just with all the curves shaved off. (OK, a 70's fuselage Newport-based Town and Country was prettier but the weight was absolutely uncalled for) But maximum roofline and maximum openable windows, a delight to sun-sensitive Gen X kiddoes everywhere. :) I guess they were actually cooler before Broughamized and then toned down.
And I spent too much damn time looking at the back of those parts bin GM headrests when I was a kid, dammit! (here's ten year old Olive still wanting to remake all GM interiors, particularly G-bodies that were OK on the outside but Tuppreware on the inside and with wheezy V-6ses that just cycled through idling athsma attacks over... and over.. and over... Slowly I turned... Step by step... )
Anyway, those things were pretty posh, compared to Malibus and stuff that were like, 'If we make everything you touch feel cheap, you'll assume you must be saving money.' I hated those things. My Da made me take my driver's test in it. I was like, 'The Celica's an extension of *me,* this is an appliance.'
Anyway, GM damage. It did work out ok. In any event, land-yachts are now cool cause the kids can't have anything else. And they do have their fun points. Always did. :)

Where I’m from (Costa Rica), these big American wagons have been used as hearses for years, so they are not very popular as personal or family cars. However, I’ve always wanted one of these and from time to time I find examples for sale that don’t cost that much. Last year I found a white 96 roadmaster that looked in pretty good condition and not that expensive. Toyed with the idea of buying it but I was deterred by the difficulty to sale it later on due to their reputation as hearses and the fact that fuel prices will make run away any potential buyer. If I were in the USA, I’d buy one of these right away!

These wood paneled station wagons are so cozy and american. They feel so useful and multipurpose compared to pickup trucks, that I honestly don't understand why americans switched to massive SUVs and pickups. I mean a station wagon is lower, should get better mpg (with today's engines), will keep your cargo dry unlike pickups, and fits a lot more people, too. Top it all up: they take up less space in the city, parking lot and yard. So what gives? The style is there.
