All species relations are derived from the latest official phylogeny by Capcom (shown in "Haunting of the Sun") and embellished by me. You can find this semi-canon phylogeny for the series here: tinyurl.com/OceanPhylo - All books and authors mentioned in the narrated parts are made up by me. The real books that were used for this film can be found in the sources section above. - All relative locations on the World Map from Gen 1-2 are taken directly from Hunter's Encyclopedia 1&2, but anything past that is mostly speculation. Many statements are based on the semi-canon World Map of the Monster Hunter Universe that I made a while ago. You can find it here: tinyurl.com/OceanMHMap - At numerous points in the documentary I speak about Dundorma as if it is the de-facto capital of the Hunter's Guild. While it is established that the city holds considerable authority within the network of Monster Hunting, it is never directly stated to be THE authority; that is an assumption on my part. *Part 1* - The name "Ornate Rath" is made up by me, the game simply calls them "Azure & Pink Raths" - The difference in Venom Gland location between Old and New World Rathians is only noticeable in-game, and is never explicitly mentioned in writing. - The mutation to the Metal Raths Flame Sac is an assumption by me. While something is clearly different about it, no book has thus far described how and why their fire is different. - Dreadking/Dreadqueen Gene Hypothesis is not a canon fact, but a theory borrowed from Monster Hunter Stories 2's post-game, where NPC dialogue muses on that maybe Rath Deviants are part of a royal lineage. Just as the video says, this is only a hypothesis and not accepted as true (canon) by the Guild (Capcom). - Raths having low Juvenile Mortality is a guess on my part based on a) the large and healthy population of the species and b) the canon fact that Raths only lay 10 eggs at a time. Small clutches + high child mortality would make establishing and maintaining a large population rather difficult, so I went ahead and assumed that most Rath babies survive their youth. *Part 2* - The exact transition from White Velociprey to Giaprey is only a theory, even in universe. White Velociprey were a rare variation that could be found in the hot seasons in MH2 (and G and Freedom 1! Thanks @mh-united) exclusively. When seasons were removed in MHFU, it was repurposed into the Giaprey. So any biological explanation is inherently just a justification for a change that was mechanically motivated first and foremost. - The Old World Raptors have some of the worst cases of "Lore Only" Ecology. For example, Giaprey packs forming into mega packs, or Ioprey dispersing if the Drome dies are mentioned numerous times, but never seen as in-game behaviors (as far as I am aware). - The exact defining features that differentiate Old and New World Raptors are purely observational - the books say nothing of them. *Part 3* - The Incubation time for Khezu Whelps is never mentioned in any texts I found. - The Red Khezu Hypothesis is made up by me. All we get in the lore is "we call Red Khezu a subspecies, but who knows maybe the whites are just albinos? hohohoho how mysterious :3" - White Khezu being sensitive to sunlight is unclear. I needed to somehow justify as to HOW the Guild ever even conceived the idea of albinism in the White Khezu, and photosensitivity is the easiest symptom to observe. *Part 4* - The exact details of the Dark Kut-Ku Incident are embellished, all we know is that hunting Kut-Kus sucked for a while - Eastern Kut-Ku being easier to track since they leave fewer holes is made up. I think it makes sense, but no source ever says this. - "Kukku-Sensei" is never used in-universe as far as I know and is a nickname sometimes used by japanese players, especially in the older generations. *Part 5* - The timeline of discoveries surrounding the Cephalos and the Plesioth is not nearly as clear as this documentary presents it as. As Gen 1 Monsters, they are both implied to have been discovered very early on in the Guild's history, but which one was discovered earlier and how is made up for this film. - The Plesioths intelligence is never mentioned canonically, I'm just mean. *Part 6* - The lack of information on juvenile monsters is more of an observation than a canon fact - the series gives us, the players, very little info on baby boys. But there is no specification if that lack of information also affects the Guild in-universe. - The exact location of Gravios' organs isnt specified, we are simply told that they sit all bunched up together for the reasons described in the video. - Black Gravios is, as far as all the games and official materials are concerned, a SUBSPECIES. However, its description as simply a regular Gravios with extra firepower should put it into the category of a VARIANT. There are a few such cases in the franchise, and this video series will generally assume that in-universe, the Guild simply misclassified these creatures early on and that it is now in the process of amending this. If you want to know why the games have been so weird with their definition of Subspecies, check out Luty's thread on the topic: twitter.com/lutyrannus/status/1634118356864212992 *Part 7* - Black Diablos is still considered a subspecies by the games, despite its description being very obviously more in line with being a Variant (so much so that MHW Complete Works pg. 332 even pokes fun at it). *Part 8* - It is not clear if Gypceros was the first monster to be discovered having Dash Extract - its just the only monster where it having it is pointed out specifically. - Gypceros are stated to cause trouble, but the books do not clarify if they are despised or disliked beyond that. - Similarily, Gypceros are said to attack traders, but their effect on trading routes isn't mentioned. *Part 9* - The exact history of how the Kirin was discovered is embellished by me. In canon, it was simply a mysterious creature for a long time until it was properly sighted. - "True Fulminokinesis" is not the actual name of its ability. *Part 10* - The LDPI obviously doesnt exist under that name in-universe. But the Guild is mentioned to be taking precautions against the Dragon. - It is unclear if you would actually be able to see the strata in a Lao's shell, but based on what we know about it, I figured that is a pretty safe assumption.
As someone who only got into the Monster Hunter series with World and then Rise, it's been incredibly interesting to see the monsters I've never fought from earlier generations be described. The ecology and monsters of the Old World are so fascinating and the way you present them is very well done. Thank you for all the effort you put into this compilation and the series before it, I look forward to being able to see more in the future!
Whole lotta props for the mountain of effort that went into this first season. Hopefully with time it starts hitting the numbers that some of your older stuff got cuz I think you’ve really refined your style incredibly well and this is some of your best editing, and scripting. Looking forward to season 2.
My theory with the ruby Basarios is simply that the crystals of the everwood are probably the main food source of any Basarios living there, even later into their growth, to the point where the’ve consumed so much more crystals than any other stones that it becomes the primary stones that build up on its body.
I wouldn’t be suprised if the reason we never see ruby gravious is because they are more cryptic going deeper into the earth to feed and rarely surfacing.
who cares about my actual timetable, this is the best class on campus right here (this comment is gold btw I dunno how it didn't pop up when I first watched this)
oceaniz, thank you so much for doing this series, it sparked a love for documentaries and ecology that was blurred for a while, all your videos are so well written and edited thank you so much for all the work you put in these videos! i wish a happy new year!
"Garugas are in fact known to actively provoke fights that seem to be of no obvious purpose to them...they simply seem to really enjoy violence" plus "and they seems to take special pleasure in killing their own relatives" this whole garuga part make me laugh so hard for how accurately funny it is. They are truly an explosive cocktail of menace
At first, I saw your channel and decided to watch a few vids to pass the time. But with each one I watch, I was absorbed into the deep lore and effort you put into them...making one of the biggest game series and turning it into a nature show had me hooked and I am very eager to see more. I hope to see a season 2 of the Ecology series, along with any more Nature vids (new or remastered) in the future as well. And as I'm currently playing Rise, and later Sunbreak, I hope to see more species added to this collection when they come out as I gaze in awe at the beautiful yet fearsome creatures we face.
Headcanon time- Kirin does not produce lightning storms. Kirins horn acts as an incredibly powerful lighting rod, so strong that Kirin drags thunder over their heads when they travel, as well as seeking out natural storms to use to their advantage.
I love videos of the length of 2+ movies that I can go to work and listen to until break time. Your channel is a blessing to MH fans and workers who are allowed an earbud everywhere, im sure. Your voice is earcatching, and your information is interesting.
This came at the perfect time! I sadly didn't have time to watch these videos so to have it all in one place and just relax and learn makes me so happy. Happy Holidays, Happy New Year and thanks for the incredible videos Oceaniz!
The fact that Capcom actually takes the time out to actually give each individual monster from (small to large) their own unique biological adaptation and how they live their lives, ecology and speculative evolution is one of the many reasons why monster hunter is one my favorite video game franchises! You could tell they love this series and their creations, i hope they never stop. Most game developers wouldn't put in that much effort into their characters. I really in wilds we will have like an in-game animal documentary and biology type of aspect! Where you can see which monster is closely related to, and how they evolved etc!
Btw this compliation is honestly some of my favorite stuff from this channel. Your craft has definitely gotten better and I can’t wait for next season (I assuming we are beginning with one of the foot wyverns)
I could not keep a straight face while you spoke of the Khezu. "stubby and short at first but glance, but can open the tip to reveal another gaping hole"
Not the video I wanted to watch but the video I didn't know I NEEDED to watch. What a superb investigation mate. Now I'm eager to watch 2nd Generation newcomers in another full (5 hours maybe?) documentary. 2nd Gen brought a lot of new monsters tho.
Idk how i havent stumbled onto your channel sooner. This video is an awesome in depth inspection of the monsters. Its always satisfying how well thought out the anatomy is. Great vid, man. keep it up 😎👍
I love watching this video and learning more and more about monsters! Youre a freaking hero! I look forward to seeing the ecology for the 2nd generation!😁
you are an absolute treasure to the youtube MH community. please keep it up. cant wait to see you reap the rewards once you're making Wilds ecology vids.
I appreciate Lao Shan a lot. We got all kinds of monsters who attack if attacked, aggressive or outwardly vindictive…and he is just a big man with a place to be
I do wish you had shown the first gen models. The Raths gained almost completely different leg anatomy at some point.(I believe during first gen.) I love your videos so much though!
This covers the monsters from the first generation of games. He covered World and Rise due to the additional information provided in-game and supplemental books for the returning monsters. He has five seasons planned to cover the new additions each generation, not per game.
finally finishing up on this video (already watched second gen) and after playing the mhwi beta I am safe to say EXCITED to see what you'll be able to do and create with the ecosystems shown there ! Thank you for making these, they're such a blessing to exist
i noticed on the metal raths that you can slightly see their underlying color, they are ornate raths with this additional mutation on the wingspikes of silver rath, you can see some blue underneath
the idea with thers Yian-garuga in the New world while thers no Yian-kut-ku can also simply be that yian Garuga outside theyr breeding time jsut travel around many animals do that especially birds take the white stork they breed in europe but after that spend most of theyr time in africa where they do not breed
Love the effort and time put in to produce this amazing series. Truly a statement of your commitment to this franchise and its inhabitants. A documentary i would love to see is one on the Caverns of El Dorado, i know Kulve Taroth is the only large monster in there but it would be cool to hear you talk about its formation and native inhabitants such as Kulve Taroth herself, tsuchinoko, copper calapa and the native gajalaka tribe
What would happen if you were to plant a Cephalos Egg in, say, a lake full of fish? Would a Blue Cephalos be born and adapt back to its primordial aquatic lifestyle?
this is absolutely amazing ! I've only finished wathcing the Rath part, but I'm a little sad that you didn't include the Black Rathian, as always thought it was the most beautiful of color variation and would have loved to learn some more about it. But still, these documentaries are amazing !
The black rathian or unknown, it's not a rathian it's a completely different monster, also it's from frontier so it's not canon to the main line games which are the ones that he's covering in this videos.
A MH game that takes place before the guild where humanity really had to fight to survive the monsters with whatever they had would make for a great game
Let it be known that I always make sure I've watched every part all the way through. Whether it's a repeat or going back the next day. Love the content bro 🙌

“The Plesioth intelligence is never mentioned canonically, I’m just mean” _wheeze_
Thank you, now I don’t have to keep looking at your playlist every time I want to binge a nature documentary

There he is, showing up when you needed him the most. What a hero
Tñu😢
Everytime you make these long compilations they go right into my offline downloads for stuff like flights or work. It's very nice to listen to.
Precisely what i do too
i love how the documentary is actually formatted as if it's an in-universe analysis; very immersive while i work on my projects
POV: you accidentally entered Wyvern Ecology 352 taught by professor Oceaniz
who cares about my actual timetable, this is the best class on campus right here (this comment is gold btw I dunno how it didn't pop up when I first watched this)
TH-cam sent me here and I have np regrets as I've been smashing out MHW
Can I request he does a guest lecture at Speculative Biology 301 with professor UNC? I think that'll be a hoot
Accidentally?
Imma pass this class with flying colours
oceaniz, thank you so much for doing this series, it sparked a love for documentaries and ecology that was blurred for a while, all your videos are so well written and edited
thank you so much for all the work you put in these videos! i wish a happy new year!
These are so well made, I can't even imagine how long it must've taken you to compile and make sense of all this information. Amazing stuff.
Are you gonna compile all generations into a MASSIVE video when this is all over? That would be sick

Finally a video made for the retirement home veteran hunters. Now theyre distracted from complaining on reddit!!.
Spending the last days of the year watching some high quality content is a sign of a year well spent. Thank you so so much for this oceaniz!!!
Headcanon time-
Kirin does not produce lightning storms. Kirins horn acts as an incredibly powerful lighting rod, so strong that Kirin drags thunder over their heads when they travel, as well as seeking out natural storms to use to their advantage.
this is a goddamn movie!
I can only imagine how wild your documentaries will become for MH: Wilds! Keep keeping it up, Oceaniz
Merry Christmas Oceaniz!
Amazing work this 1st season for MHE.
Looking forward for everything in the future!
This series is great, the gypceros episode was my favourite.
Excited to see what you got in store for us with S2.
The fact that Capcom actually takes the time out to actually give each individual monster from (small to large) their own unique biological adaptation and how they live their lives, ecology and speculative evolution is one of the many reasons why monster hunter is one my favorite video game franchises! I loved this series. Absolutely hyped for Season 2
Ah the first generation, the generation that my hunter (Sukaruhakkā) was from lore wise. Looking back at it, my hunter has come a long way since then.
3 + hours of oceaniz content?! YES PLEASE 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
THAT FIRST BACKGROUNR MUSIC!!! THATS TORCHLIGHT 1 VILLAGE I DIDNT EXPECT TO HEAR IT HERE. Bro ydk how HAPPY that made me 😭
This man is truly dedicated to bringing the ecology of the world we love right to us, I admire his patience and dedication.
Not only the lore but the things this man teaches us about the world, cycle of life and how we should use it is truly beautiful
Btw this compliation is honestly some of my favorite stuff from this channel. Your craft has definitely gotten better and I can’t wait for next season (I assuming we are beginning with one of the foot wyverns)
Damn! Thanks for making all of this, I can't wait for the whole thing.

Currently at work glad this hit my notifications to make work bare able always coming in clutch!!!!
Not the video I wanted to watch but the video I didn't know I NEEDED to watch.
What a superb investigation mate.
Now I'm eager to watch 2nd Generation newcomers in another full (5 hours maybe?) documentary. 2nd Gen brought a lot of new monsters tho.
2:06:31 DID I HEAR A ROCK AND STONE?
ROCK AND STONE BROTHER !
I cannot believe I stumbled upon this channel by chance and found ehat might be my favorite kind of content, biology/MH
Please make more of these, they are legitimately so entertaining
I don't even play MH and found this video freaking awesome. Nice work!
I literally love these videos so much
Idk how i havent stumbled onto your channel sooner. This video is an awesome in depth inspection of the monsters. Its always satisfying how well thought out the anatomy is. Great vid, man. keep it up 😎👍
Always love these collections you do of your content! Keep up the great work and have a happy new year
I just got into monster hunter a few weeks ago and have been watching all of your monster ecology videos. Thanks for making such great content!
I love watching this video and learning more and more about monsters! Youre a freaking hero! I look forward to seeing the ecology for the 2nd generation!😁
This is the best late Christmas gift ever
I may have already watched all the others, but I'm still gonna watch this. Its worth it.
Here's to more of these after a well-deserved break~
4:53 damn this vespoid got recked. Nice vid tho love your channel
Very nice my friend, question for a future video. In the future could you make a video that shows all all items & their raritys in the hunter chest?
Please don't ever stop making these, thank you 🙏
Great work as always. Watched the second one a while ago, and now I'm listening to this one while doing some chores.
you are an absolute treasure to the youtube MH community. please keep it up. cant wait to see you reap the rewards once you're making Wilds ecology vids.
I love how u make thouse vids man they look like something i would see on national geographics
This is better than some of the documentaries I've watched created by whole teams of professionals 😔 very well done... Bloody well done..
Merry Christmas Oceaniz and a happy new year.
Watching this series while working on my Odogaron cosplay. Perfect.
Absolutely amazing man, I love how you're doing it all as an in universe researcher. Really adds a whole new level of love to it I really appreciate.
I appreciate Lao Shan a lot. We got all kinds of monsters who attack if attacked, aggressive or outwardly vindictive…and he is just a big man with a place to be
Making this video is the real proof of a hero.
I do wish you had shown the first gen models.
The Raths gained almost completely different leg anatomy at some point.(I believe during first gen.)
I love your videos so much though!
Merry Christmas oceaniz
And thanks for the present
You've been doing great man! Love all the work you do!
Keep up the amazing work ❤Can't wait to see generation 2
What have we got so far? World, Rise, and 1st gen? 3 more generations and we could get the Monster Hunter Ecology Supercut (until Wilds comes out)
This covers the monsters from the first generation of games. He covered World and Rise due to the additional information provided in-game and supplemental books for the returning monsters. He has five seasons planned to cover the new additions each generation, not per game.
Does anyone think that Oceaniz should write a Monster Hunter novel adaptation? It would be a kickass book. I wonder if Capcom would allow it?
I wish I could like this more than once. I started on Monster Hunter World but this makes me want to go back and play all of the previous games.
finally finishing up on this video (already watched second gen) and after playing the mhwi beta I am safe to say EXCITED to see what you'll be able to do and create with the ecosystems shown there ! Thank you for making these, they're such a blessing to exist
i noticed on the metal raths that you can slightly see their underlying color, they are ornate raths with this additional mutation
on the wingspikes of silver rath, you can see some blue underneath
It would be cool to see this on a streaming service
Just discovered your channel and work, what a treat!!
Hope You had an amazing Christmas man! Love your work🎁🎁🎁🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
This is wonderfully put together and a joy to watch! And it has really ignited my interest in the Monster Hunter world and its creatures~
the idea with thers Yian-garuga in the New world while thers no Yian-kut-ku
can also simply be that yian Garuga outside theyr breeding time jsut travel around
many animals do that especially birds
take the white stork
they breed in europe
but after that spend most of theyr time in africa where they do not breed
Love you oceaniz!
Great documentary, i've never played any Monster Hunter game but the monsters always seemed quite interesting, looking forward to season 2.
How does a Plesioth sleep? Perhaps they roll gradually on the surface as they do, keeping a wet surface to the air.
Best MH biology documentaries! 😆
Thank you oceaniz! i love listening to your videos while doing work!
Hoo Boi. Time to sit back and relax
the 2 baby raths are cute, I want to hug them
This has been a awesome series and can’t wait for the next season ❤
ohhhh thank you for that background music, torchlight.. ahh childhood
I love this. I hope to see more in the future.
amazing video as usual
Khezu is an affront to not only the senses but decency itself. It has no reason to exist but does so anyway to spite both man and god.
Rewatching this after finishing the Second Generation one
This is an amazing video man. You earned my sub and wish i found you sooner. See you in WILDS!
These videos are so fun and entertaining to watch
This documentary is amazing! I'm learning so much!
What would happen if you were to plant a Cephalos Egg in, say, a lake full of fish? Would a Blue Cephalos be born and adapt back to its primordial aquatic lifestyle?
Man, it'd be a really curveball if we ever found a Kirin that controls fire.
i love how in universe this is, absolutely fabulous
this is absolutely amazing !
I really hope you cover the seregios. Really enjoyed this!
Some people like the sound of the ocean when they sleep. I prefer the sound of Oceaniz ❤
Let it be known that I always make sure I've watched every part all the way through. Whether it's a repeat or going back the next day. Love the content bro 🙌
Great job, very well made and entertaining 👌🏼
I now feel really bad for the full set of black diablos armor I have sitting in my chest
Hear me out 1:00:44
Wait so the Gravios' firecloud actually IS a fart?! That is fantastic!
In the middle of watching. Khezu are the scariest monsters I've seen in the games. Ive only played World and a bit of Rise, though
thank you for this now I can sound smart in front of my friends new to monster hunter
